As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Monroe Chamber of Commerce, we present you with our 2016-2017 Commemorative Keepsake Annual Directory. The Chamber Board of Directors works diligently to bring programs and events that create opportunity for businesses to get out of the office and network. We encourage anyone in the Monroe community to attend any of our Business After Hours, Lunch and Learn Educational Segments, and Morning Networking Meetings. We are also pleased to announce a unique series of educational events centered around the larger businesses coming to and surrounding the Monroe area called, “Surviving the Big Box”. This will be a three part series hosted by SCORE at the Edith Wheeler Memorial Library starting in September. About the ChamberThe Monroe Chamber of Commerce is a dynamic group of business leaders dedicated to improving the economic environment and quality of life for our community.

Founded in 1966, the Monroe Chamber of Commerce has nearly 125 members and represents a wide variety of businesses from one-person home businesses to large manufacturing companies with hundreds of employees. Our mission is to promote the well being of the business and professional community in our town. We hold regular meetings and events in support of our membership.

For the last seven years, I am proud to say that the Town of Monroe has worked side by side with the Monroe Chamber of Commerce to develop a Monroe team approach with our new and expanding businesses. With the Town’s involvement in the Bridgeport Regional Business Council (BRBC) and the BRBC Economic Development Committee, we have seen a recent spike of both new businesses and equally as important, the expansion of existing businesses. Our Monroe Economic Development Commission is actively communicating with our Chamber of Commerce. These groups work in collaboration with our Planning and Zoning Commission to ensure our Plan of Conservation and Development will continue to cultivate a thriving business sector that complements our distinct suburban charm. Our Land Use Group provides a means for combining existing independent departments into one large cohesive group. Through the oversight of a Land Use Director, the group has come together to function more efficiently with the common goal of processing regulatory requirements and coordinating the use and development of land throughout the Town. Monroe is desirable for its many unique economic opportunities for business creation, expansion and relocation. We are strategically located in between Interstates 95, 84 and Route 15. Our location lends us

a strong and diverse labor force fully equipped with the necessary skills to get the job done! Monroe’s close proximity to major universities helps attract the finest and brightest skilled workers. One of the best kept secrets in Monroe is our growing variety of Restaurants and Delicatessens. With the large selection of culinary styles, great food is only minutes away from any area of Town. Local businesses also benefit from the attractive quality of life that Monroe offers. The Monroe school system has recently received numerous accolades being ranked among the top districts in the state and country. In addition, our public services as well as recreational areas are of the highest quality. Community events and picturesque attractions make Monroe a great place to live and an even better place to do business. We have a great sense of community to accompany our rich New England culture.

The date was late into February of 1966 when a group of business men in Monroe, CT announced there would be a Charter Meeting tonight to formally form, what would be called the Monroe Chamber of Commerce and to announce that tonight would be the final chance to become a Charter Member of said organization.

The group would have the charge to adopt bylaws, elect a board of directors and a President. The meeting was to be held in the Vitramon cafeteria on Main Street, Route 25, at 9:00 o’clock P.M. William Boyce, was elected temporary Chairman of the group and said, “The Memebers ellected as temporary Board of Directors have been conducting a membership campaign and many local businessmen have signed up with the new group,” he continued, “In addition to the names proposed by the temporary officers, nominations will be accepted from the floor for the Board of Directors at tonight’s meeting.”
