One of the miraculous things that happened during previ-ous FLIPs is that some of the many ideas floating around thestreets of Parati like wind-blown seeds lodged in the minds ofvisitors, authors, editors, publishers, journalists and readers.Some of these seeds have already taken root and are flower-ing in faraway places.

Ideas propagated in the FLIP hothouse can flourish anywhere,given the right conditions. Editors will meet authors, read theirbooks and want to publish them. Publishers will meet trans-lators and start working with them. Readers will hear writerstalk and go out and buy their books. Or write their own. Someauthors have already found new publishers as a result of FLIPsI and II. Authors visiting Brazil for the first time go home and telltheir friends about Brazil's riches. “Parati,” says the LondonSunday Times, “is the party hot spot.”

FLIP 2005 will be another heady brew, with writers frommany countries, and from many parts of Brazil, all set to convergeon the “hot spot” from July 6th to 10th. Of course, authors are theheart and soul of FLIP. But we are also indebted to the whole-hearted support of our sponsors. And to the people of Parati weoffer our thanks for making FLIP sparkle like no other literaryfestival anywhere else in the world.

Finally, I would like to welcome all visitors to our third FLIP.These days in Parati will bring stimulation of many kinds. Youcan attend one event or all of them. Or you can simply sit at atable in the square and watch the world go by and, who knows,another seed may take root right there. Uma das coisas milagrosas que aconteceram durante asFLIPs anteriores é que algumas das muitas idéias que flutuavampelas ruas de Parati, como sementes levadas pelo vento, aloja-ram-se nas mentes dos visitantes,autores,editores, jornalistas eleitores. Algumas dessas sementes já criaram raízes e brotaramem terras distantes.

As idéias semeadas na estufa da FLIP podem desabrocharem qualquer lugar,desde que haja as condições necessárias.Edi-tores encontrarão seus autores, lerão seus livros e desejarãopublicá-los – ou encontrarão tradutores e começarão a trabalharjuntos. Leitores assistirão às palestras dos autores e comprarãoseus livros. Ou escreverão seus próprios livros. Alguns autoresconheceram seus novos editores graças às FLIPs I e II. Autoresque vêm ao Brasil pela primeira vez contarão aos amigos sobreas riquezas daqui. “Parati,” como diz o jornal Sunday Times, “é amais badalada das festas.”

A FLIP 2005 será mais uma poção poderosa,que inclui escri-tores de vários países, e, claro, de vários estados do Brasil, todosprontos para embarcar para o “local mais badalado” entre 6 e 10de julho. Os autores, obviamente, são a alma da festa literária,mas nada aconteceria sem a ajuda generosa de nossos patroci-nadores. Agradeço também à população de Parati por ter feito aFLIP brilhar mais do que qualquer outra festa literária do mundo.

A tribute toClarice Lispector

In 2004,the Parati International Literary Festival paid tribute toJoão Guimarães Rosa, one of the most influential innovators of20th century Brazilian prose. This year FLIP’s annual homage tokey Brazilian writers is to another great literary innovator, ClariceLispector (1920-1977). Born in Ukraine, Lispector chose Braziland the Brazilian Portuguese language as her literary homeland.But in her case, homeland certainly did not mean haven: her workopposed safety and satisfaction with the status quo.Following herdebut with Near to the Wild Heart (1943), she sought a singularpath,and a highly personal and idiosyncratic style that has attrac-ted vast numbers of admirers from all walks of life and has madeher one of the most popular voices in Brazilian literature abroad.

To celebrate the legacy of this great author, we have invitedNaum Alves de Souza to direct the opening ceremony at FLIP2005: a multimedia show which includes testimonies and tri-butes, readings, poems and songs inspired by Lispector’s work.De Souza is also a writer, set designer, costume designer andplaywright. He has received several awards, including theMolière, Mambembe and APCA, and his plays have been transla-ted into several languages and staged abroad.

This year's programme also features a lecture by threeexperts on Clarice’s work, the writer Marina Colasanti and thecritics Vilma Arêas and Benedito Nunes, who will explore Lispec-tor's creative path and her lasting legacy.

Em sua edição de 2004,a Festa Literária Internacional de Pa-rati prestou tributo a João Guimarães Rosa,um dos grandes reno-vadores da prosa brasileira no século XX. Em 2005, é a hora e avez de fazer as honras da casa a Clarice Lispector (1920-1977), anarradora que, nascida na Ucrânia, escolheu o Brasil e o portu-guês do Brasil como pátria literária.Mas,no caso,quem diz pátrianão diz porto seguro:a literatura de Lispector é avessa à seguran-ça, ao comodismo do já sabido e já aceito. Desde a estréia comPerto do coração selvagem (1943), Lispector trilhou um caminhosingular, em que a matéria muito pessoal só tinha par na inova-ção formal de seus livros; não bastasse isso, conquistou umpúblico leitor dos mais amplos e fiéis, e tornou-se uma das vozesda literatura brasileira mais conhecidas no exterior.

Para comemorar o legado da autora, convidamos o diretorcênico Naum Alves de Souza para conceber a abertura da FLIP2005:um espetáculo multimídia,conjugando depoimentos, leitu-ras, poemas e canções inspiradas na obra de Lispector. Naum étambém escritor, cenógrafo, figurinista e roteirista. Foi premiadocom os troféus Molière, Mambembe, APCA, entre outros, e teveseus textos teatrais traduzidos para diversos idiomas.

Na Tenda dos Autores,como não podia deixar de ser,uma me-sa será dedicada a discutir os caminhos criativos de Lispector e suaatualidade sempre candente – tudo isso na voz de três profundosconhecedores de Clarice:a escritora Marina Colasanti e os críticosVilma Arêas e Benedito Nunes.No Cine Tela Brasil você poderá as-sistir a uma excelente adaptação de A hora da estrela,dirigido porSuzana Amaral. Por sua atuação como Macabéa, Marcélia Car-taxo recebeu o Urso de Prata no Festival de Cinema de Berlim em1990. E no episódio da série Cena Aberta, da TV Globo, você veráuma adaptação diferente de Guel Arraes e Jorge Furtado para omesmo romance de Clarice, que mistura ficção com realidade.

FLIP is not only a platform for established writers, but alsosees as its responsibility promoting the careers of promisingnew writers. The 2005 FLIP Creative Writing Workshop willenable 50 budding Brazilian writers to take part in classes givenby the novelist Raimundo Carrero, who featured among theguest authors at FLIP 2004. In his series of three classes “TheSecrets of Fiction”, Carrero will discuss key elements of the artof writing fiction, using texts by Flaubert, Kerouac and VargasLlosa as examples.

In the first class, “The Narrative Voice”, Carrero introducesdifferent types of narrators and the relationship between narra-tor,character and reader. In “The Creative Process”,he discussesthe issues that afflict any aspiring writer: intuition, technique andcomposition. In the third,he examines “The Construction of Char-acters”.

The 2004 Creative Writing Workshop was extremely suc-cessful and culminated in the award of two scholarships, to Anto-nio Dutra and Christiane Tassis, to enable them to write their ownbooks. On 7th July, the two will talk to the class of 2005 about thenovels they are writing.

Raimundo Carrero was born in 1947 in Salgueiro, in the stateof Pernambuco, in the northeast of Brazil.He won the Jabuti Prizefor As sombrias ruínas da alma and the APCA and Machado deAssis prizes for Somos pedras que se consomem. Mais uma vez a FLIP abre espaço para jovens talentos dasletras brasileiras. Nesta edição da oficina literária da FLIP,cinqüenta escritores iniciantes participam de três aulas comRaimundo Carrero, ficcionista que foi um dos destaques da FLIP2004. A partir do mote “Os segredos da ficção”, o escritor per-nambucano discute os elementos básicos dessa arte a partir detextos de autores como Flaubert, Kerouac e Vargas Llosa.

Na primeira aula, “A voz narrativa”, Carrero trata das váriasmodalidades de narrador e da relação entre este, a personageme o leitor.A segunda,“O processo criador”,versa sobre temas queafligem qualquer aspirante: intuição, técnica e composição. Naterceira aula é a vez de examinar “A construção da personagem”.

A oficina literária teve grande sucesso em 2004 e premiouAntonio Dutra e Christiane Tassis com bolsas para completar seuspróprios livros; no dia 7 de julho, os dois falarão aos colegas de2005 sobre os romances que estão escrevendo.

Educational Programme Pro

FLIP’s Educational Programme has new features for 2005.Since the beginning of the year, more than 200 teachers in Paratistate schools have added to their knowledge and experience ofhow to take advantage of reading in the classroom. Around fivethousand state school students, associations and independentgroups have been developing projects focusing on literary classics.Works by Clarice Lispector, to whom homage is paid in this year’sopening event,as well as by guest writers in FLIP’s 2005 programme,are the starting point for these projects, which teachers have beendeveloping with their students.

As part of the Educational Programme, Parati’s first readinggroup was set up this year.Once a week, the Reading Circle (Ciran-da da Leitura) gathers a group of people interested in reading anddiscussing literature.

The other novelty is a Puppet and Mask Group (Ciranda deMáscaras e Bonecos),which aims to recognize the value of Parati’scultural heritage, and to use the Literary Festival as an inspirationfor its activities.

The children’s library, situated in the Blue Marquee, will receivebooks donated by publishers and readers.At the end of FLIP, this col-lection will be sent to Guiomar Schimitt School,on Ilha das Cobras,apart of Parati town.

During FLIP, as well as enjoying masks and puppets basedon literary sources, listening to stories or reading books near thetown’s main square, you are also invited to visit an exhibition ofthe works carried out by the town’s young readers.

The Educational Programme is an ongoing activity that in-volves teachers, tutors and students in Parati. In this way FLIPhopes to bring continuing year-round benefits to the children ofParati.

O Programa Educativo da FLIP preparou uma agenda espe-cial para 2005. Desde o começo do ano, mais de 200 professo-res da rede de ensino de Parati aprimoram conhecimentos e dis-cutem como aproveitar melhor a leitura em sala de aula. Todasas escolas do município, além de associações e grupos inde-pendentes,desenvolveram trabalhos com cerca de 5 mil alunosa partir de clássicos da literatura. O ponto de partida dos proje-tos foi a obra dos autores convidados e da escritora ClariceLispector.

Sob a coordenação do Programa Educativo, iniciou-se, esteano, o primeiro grupo de leitura em Parati. Uma vez por semana,aCiranda da Leitura reúne um grupo de interessados em ler,discu-tir e fazer da literatura a estrela desse encontro.

Outra novidade é a Ciranda de Máscaras e Bonecos,cuja pro-posta é valorizar o patrimônio cultural e as manifestações folcló-ricas da cidade servindo-se da Festa Literária como fonte inspi-radora desses trabalhos.

Na Tenda Azul uma biblioteca infanto-juvenil recebe doa-ções de editoras e leitores, cujo acervo será encaminhado paraa Escola Municipal Guiomar Schimitt, na Ilha das Cobras.

Durante a FLIP, além de apreciar e brincar com as máscaras eos bonecos, ouvir histórias e ler um livro nos arredores da praça,você poderá assistir às apresentações dos trabalhos realizadospelos jovens leitores paratienses.

O Programa Educativo é uma ação contínua que envolve pro-fessores,educadores e estudantes de Parati.É assim que cada vezmais a FLIP faz parte da cidade e a cidade participa da FLIP.
