SÃO PAULOSão Paulo, maior cidade do Brasil e um dos quatro maiores aglo-

merados populacionais do mundo, está localizada na região su-

deste do Brasil. É a capital do Estado de São Paulo.

A região onde hoje está a cidade era conhecida, pelos povos indí-

genas que a habitavam, como Piratininga (peixe seco).

Com a chegada dos jesuítas, em 25 de janeiro de 1554, foi rezada

uma missa, hoje considerada o marco de fundação da cidade.

Como na doutrina católica esse é o dia de São Paulo, a povoação

recebeu o nome de São Paulo de Piratininga. Com o passar do

tempo e o domínio da cultura européia sobre a indígena o nome

da cidade se resumiu a São Paulo.

São Paulo, the largest Brazilian city and one of the four largest

populational hubs in the world, is located in the Southeastern region of

Brazil. It is the capital of the State of São Paulo. The region where the

city is located was known as Piratininga (dried fish) by the indigenous

peoples who inhabited it.

With the arrival of the Jesuits, on January 25, 1554 a mass was

celebrated, and nowadays the date is considered that of the foundation

of the city. According to the Catholic Doctrine, this day is the day of

Saint Paul, so the settlement was named São Paulo de Piratininga.

With the passing of time and the domination of European culture over

the natives, the name of the city was reduced to São Paulo.
