The Loire is a strong element of Nantes’s identity. The city has to deal with flood risks becoming more and more frequent and in-tense. To find solutions for urba-nised flood area, the city needs a new research center on flood risks. The project, which takes place on a flood area, considers the water constraints as the first design step. To protect the living spaces from

water, the structure is composed of concrete vertical elements holding the main slab. The program offers a large workspace (laboratory, of-fices) as well as public functions (water museum, library) and pri-vate spaces (dwellings for resear-chers).

The project, based on a partial demolition and reconstruc-tion, has to deal with existing footprint constraints. The dialog between the construc-tions phases gives the project its own specificity. Its topo-logy is characterised by two

main volumes and a central junction; composing an uni-fied body. The facade is com-posed by perforated alumi-nium panels. Its movement is defined by the light intensity, and the views axes for each program.

The project uses the material identity of the aban-doned industrial site. The concept is based on a central void divided in two parts : one closed and introverted, the main theater, one opened and ex-traverted, which is the entrance backyard and can be transformed as a second theater.

Lobby, functional, technical rooms, circulation areas and living spaces for actors are disposed around the two voids. The project is half enburried to be integrated in the site and to control the natural light in the main theater.
