This course is a native-level study of English language and literature, made up of 2 parts of language and 2 parts of literature, 4 parts total. Part 1 studies "language in the cultural context," specifically how language is affected by both author and reader, and how culture and context impact language and meaning. Part 2 studies "language and mass communication," specifically how language is used and affected by various forms of media, and how media is used to affect the readers. Part 3 studies the "texts and contexts" of literature, specifically how broad socio-historical factors affect authors and readers as well as the form of texts, and how values appear and act in texts. Part 4 is an in-depth "critical study" of literary texts, specifically how authors communicate with readers using devices and detailed choices.

Assessment: Paper 1 (Language) This recorded lesson is part of preparation for Paper 1, for which students receive two
unseen texts and have 2 hours to complete the task below. "Analyse, compare and contrast the following two texts. Include comments on the
similarities and differences between the texts and the significance of context, audience, purpose and formal and stylistic features."
In order to deepen their experience in analyzing, comparing, and contrasting multiple texts, our students were given the following tasks, with a focus on understanding different responses from different readers.

Text 2: "I love My Body" (Victoria's Secret ad) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJgw-Q54slE
1. First, students analyzed and discussed the content, structure, purpose, values, and cultural contexts of the ads, marking their similarities and differences.
2. Then students created 8 characters (name, age, race, occupation, family composition, some personal history, values, etc.) to be placed in a given scenario (a town hall meeting regarding a complaint about the second ad).
3. Finally, each student impersonated one of the characters and responded to the ads in an improvised discussion. This what you see in the video.
