    1 GENERAL

    1.1 Scope

This part of IEC 61603 gives methods for measuring and specifying those charac-teristics of wide band audio IR transmission systems not covered by part 1 of thisstandard (see also 3.1). It allows systems which make different economic use ofthe available bandwidth to be described in order that conclusions regarding in-terference and compatibility can be drawn. Interface (matching) values and othersystem characteristics are also covered. This part of IEC 61603 replaces chapter 1of IEC 764, which covers only two carrier frequencies for analogue audio signals, and which does not cover digital audio.

    1.2 Normative references

The following normative documents contain provisions which, through referencein this text, constitute provisions of this part of IEC 61603. At the time of publica-tion, the editions indicated were valid. All normative documents are subject to re-

vision, and parties to agreements based on this part of IEC 61603 are encouragedto investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the norma-tive documents indicated below(1). Members of IEC and ISO maintain registers ofcurrently valid International Standards.

    1.3 Definitions

For the purpose of this part of IEC 1603, the definitions given in part 1 of thisstandard apply, together with the following.

    Audio wide band

Audio signal whose bandwidth is sufficient for the reproduction to resemble a

    natural sound.

Note The definition includes the high fidelity specification given in IEC 581, requiring a minimumupper frequency of 12,5 kHz (system response loss 5 dB see IEC 581-8). It further includesaudio signals of digital origin with upper limit frequencies of about 20 kHz.

2 EXPLANATION OF TERMS AND GENERAL INFORMATION

    2.1 Transmitter

A transmitter (link A-B in figure 1) has an audio signal input (analogue or digit-al), and a special form of electrical output to feed a radiator.

    2.2 Combined transmitter and radiator

A combined transmitter and radiator (link A-C in figure 1) does not have an elec-trical output, and interface values therefore apply only at the input.

    (1) Editors Note: For the list of Publications, see Annex ZA.

    2.3 Radiator

A radiator (link B-C in figure 1) may be combined with other functions, such as atransmitter. At present, radiators normally consist of a number of IREDs employ-ing different technologies. These devices have peak emissions in the wavelengthrange 830 nm to 950 nm, and an IR bandwidth of about 100 nm.

    2.4 Receiver

Besides the general characteristics given in part 1 of this standard, others mayneed to be specified if a receiver (link C-D in figure 1) is combined with otherfunctions, such as earphones, to form an IR headphone.

To eliminate interference from other modulated IR sources, the receiver shallprovide enough selectivity with regard to the modulated subcarrier in addition toselectivity in the IR band. Normally this selectivity shall correspond to the spec-tral bandwidth of the modulated subcarrier signal, with some margin for instabil-ities and possible extra features.

Definitions and methods of measurement for selectivity in relation to analogueFM signals are given in the standards dealing with FM broadcast systems, such as

    IEC 315-4 and ITU-R Recommendations 412, 641 and 704.

Note For digital audio transmission, the subject of receiver selectivity is under consideration.

    2.5 Ancillary equipment

Ancillary equipment, such as power supplies or battery chargers, may be re-quired for the operation of a system. The manufacturer should specify all thedata necessary for correct operation and maintenance.

    2.6 Transmission of audio signals

2.6.1 Analogue audio signalsSeveral different modulation techniques may be used for audio wide band sig-nals in systems using infra-red as a carrier. Intersystem interference within thelimited subcarrier frequency range shall be avoided. The applications includeheadphones, loudspeaker systems, wireless microphones and audio links be-tween distributed audio equipment.

Due to its technical performance and bandwidth economy, FM multiplex modu-lation is mainly used for multichannel operation in audio wide band systems, andis at present the only technique for which compatible equipment is availablefrom different manufacturers.

With this modulation technique, the transmitter output signal consists of one ormore modulated subcarriers; this frequency-division multiplex makes economicuse of the available bandwidth.

Pulse modulation may be used for the transmission of analogue signals, usuallyemploying pulses of duration less than 1 ms. At present, equipment supplied bydifferent manufacturers is seldom compatible.

    2.6.2 Digital audio signals

General information is given in part 1 of this standard. For use in audio wideband and for similar systems, the requirements in this part are mainly concerned

with ensuring that the risk of interference is as low as possible.

At present, equipment supplied by different manufacturers is seldom compatible.

    2.7 Electromagnetic compatibility

General information is given in part 1 of this standard. Extensive information onintersystem interference and interference from other sources of IR is given inIEC 1147.

For electromagnetic compatibility, the requirements of CISPR 13 and CISPR 20shall be fulfilled.

    2.8 Safety aspects

Safety is dealt with in part 1 of this standard.

    3 SYSTEM CONSIDERATIONS

    3.1 Area of application

This part of IEC 1603 covers single or multichannel, infra-red (IR) audio (speech

or music) transmission systems in one direction, such as systems for listening tohigh fidelity audio signals in the home. It also applies where the high audio qual-ity is needed for another purpose, such as for musical playback during record-ings, for language or speech training, for audio distribution to a large audience intheatres or opera houses, or, in some countries, for bilingual systems in publicbuildings.

    3.2 Operating environment

The environmental conditions for the equipment are defined in the relevantstandards for the individual units. Unless otherwise specified, the equipmentshould operate at least within the temperature range 5C to 40C and in a relative

    humidity range up to 85%.

Notes: 1 Many systems are specified for operation in relative humidities of up to 95% without con-densation.

2 For test methods, see IEC 68-2.

    3.3 Household and professional-use equipment

Systems and equipment covered by this part of IEC 1603 are primarily used in-doors, and they have the advantage that they operate without interfering withsystems in adjacent rooms.

Household equipment is usually treated with considerable care, and cost is a

prime consideration. Professional-use equipment, however, installed in publicbuildings, is often carelessly treated and, for adequate reliability, requires to berobust. This applies, for example, to connectors.

    3.4 System planning and installation

Household applications are relatively inexpensive, so the risk of wasting a largeexpenditure on an incorrect installation is low, but applications for large audienc-es can be very costly. Therefore, it is essential that the manufacturers planningand installation instructions, such as the correct arrangement of radiators or ofscreening against direct sunlight, should be observed. Special caution is advisedconcerning disturbances caused by artificial light sources, especially HF driven

    fluorescent lamps with dimming capability.

3.5 Partition of functions between elements of the system

    3.5.1 General

As IR transmission equipment is used in rooms of very different sizes, it is availa-ble in various combinations of the functional elements. Household applicationsusually need only a few elements of small size which are easily installed, where-as for an installation in a large auditorium, it is necessary to consider the func-

tional elements separately with regard to cost and to the effort needed to installthem.

    3.5.2 Household applications

For household applications, the three elements of the transmission chain (seefigure 1) are usually combined into two. The transmitter and radiator form asmall unit, sometimes further combined with a microphone to form a single unit. The receiver can also be combined with transducers for sound reproduction, such as one or two earphones to form an IR headphone.

    3.5.3 Application in large rooms

In systems intended for use in large rooms, economic and technical considera-tions indicate that it may be better to implement each function by means of aseparate element of the system, as shown in figure 1.

    4 GENERAL CONDITIONS FOR MEASUREMENTS

4.1 Electrical input to the transmitter

If the manufacturer claims that the electrical input conforms to an IEC standard(such as IEC 933), the values specified in that standard shall be used. In othercases, the manufacturer shall specify the rated source voltage (or current) and therated source and load impedances.

6.8 Channel allocations and modulation characteristics

6.8.1 Analogue transmission by frequency modulation

6.8.1.1 Channel allocations: requirements for new designs

New designs of audio wide band systems for analogue transmission by frequencymodulation shall use the subcarrier frequency ranges 0 MHz (formally) to 1 MHz

and 2 MHz to 6 MHz. The channels use the 100 kHz grid D in accordance withpart 1 of this standard, and two adjacent slots are combined into one transmis-sion channel of 200 kHz bandwidth. The numbering of the channels on the re-ceivers shall be in accordance with table 1, which shows the relations betweenchannel code, channel number and frequency. Carrier frequencies are located inthe centre of each slot: an offset within the tolerance of the carrier frequency andthe selectivity of the receiver may be used to minimize intermodulation effects.

For stereo transmission, the pairs of channels numbered 2 and 6, 4 and 8, 22 and26, 24 and 28, 30 and 34, 32 and 36, etc. shall be used, and the left channel shallbe that with the lower carrier frequency.

Notes: 1 The pair 4 and 8 can be used only if no interference at the IF of AM broadcast or some IR

receivers is likely to occur.2 For the high band 2 MHz to 6 MHz, a channel bandwidth of 200 kHz is anticipated.

3 The combination of these high band channels to form stereo pairs is under consideration. This combination depends on selectivity aspects. The most obvious procedure of combiningtwo adjacent 200 kHz slots to form one stereo channel demands high selectivity even whenonly one stereo signal is used. A combination of two channels 2 MHz apart avoids this, butmay have other disadvantages.

6.8.1.2 Channel allocations: accommodation of existing designs

Existing products in the D-band do not make full use of this band in the mosteconomic way, which gives a maximum of 20 channels, but locate only eight car-riers in this range. They use frequency offsets of 50 kHz with respect to carriersin the D-band. However, with regard to the potential availability of low-cost com-ponents, it was accepted to include these allocations in this standard, so that ex-isting systems can continue to conform to this standard, at least until better use of

the band is implemented. To distinguish this allocation from that of table 1, the channel identification codeincludes the letter H (for high band) followed by a carrier number 1 to 8 in ac-cordance with table 2. Table 2 also shows the reference to the allocation in ac-cordance with table 1, indicating a shift of 50 kHz by a dash(-) after the channelidentification number.

In this allocation, the left channels for stereo signals are those with odd numbers(H1, H3, H5, H7) and the right channels are those with even numbers (H2, H4,H6, H8), every two adjacent channels forming one stereo pair.

    6.8.3 Digital audio transmission

6.8.3.1 Channel allocation: recommendations for new designs

Digital IR audio transmission should use the frequency range 2 MHz to 6 MHz,corresponding to grid slots F2 to F5. It shares this range with analogue audio ap-plications, so that care shall taken to avoid interference with any such applica-tions being used simultaneously.

Depending on the bit rate of the digital signal, two different channel bandwidthsare possible. At full bit-rate with 16 bit resolution the channel bandwidth is3 MHz, whereas for bit-rate reduced stereo signals the channels are 1 MHz wide.Table 3 shows the carrier allocation, band code and channel identification codefor both types of signal.

    6.8.3.2 Modulation characteristics

The recommended modulation characteristics are as follows:

6.9 Interface values for audio signalsThe interface values shall conform to IEC 268-15 or other applicable IEC stand-ards.

6.10 Overall audio frequency performance requirements
