Student Success: Recruitment, Retention and Graduation

• The School of Sport Science and Wellness Education (SSWE) has the highest enrollment and credit hours generated in the College of Health Professions among the seven schools. Additionally, SSWE is ranked fourth highest among the schools at The University of Akron in credit hours produced.

• Student Appreciation Day Celebration: University of Akron-wide event (September 6, 2006, September 10, 2007). Initiated, planned and organized student engagement events. In 2006, a total of 5000 students were catered for with free t-shirts, hot dogs, Pepsi, M & M’s and other free give-a-ways. Interactive activities were designed to provide an opportunity to interact with the university community (faculty, staff and administrators) outside of the classroom setting. Four hundred members of the university community volunteered and participated in the event. In 2007 a total of 10,000 students and 850 administrators, faculty and staff participated. This major event was institutionalized in 2008.

• Evening Student Appreciation Day Celebration: University of Akron-wide event (November 15, 2006). Initiated, planned and organized student engagement events. A total of 2000 students were catered for with free “Fear the Roo” t-shirts, hot chocolate, coffee and cookies. Ninety-five members of the university community volunteered and participated in the event.’

• Study Break I: Free Coffee: Initiated, planned and organized fall event at the University of Akron. Free coffee was provided for students during finals week of December 10-13, 2006 from 9:00 p.m. – 12:00 midnight to facilitate and enhance student studying. A total of 3500 students were catered to in Bierce Library and the Science Libraries.

• Study Break II: Free Coffee: Initiated, planned and organized spring event. Free coffee will be provided for students during finals week of May 6-9, 2007 from 9:00 p.m. – 12:00 midnight to facilitate and enhance student studying.

• Student Visitation Days: Organized, managed and provided leadership for all student visitation days at the University of Akron for potential students to learn more about the department programs; provide marketing strategies, recruitment and program planning to attract students.

• Organized Majors Mosaic: University of Akron-wide event for prospective students seeking information on possible majors. 2005-present

• Design for Our Future Student Planning Committee (2005): Jointly appointed by the University of Akron, Office of the Provost and Faculty Senate Executive Committee.

requirements WORK EXPERIENCE School Director of Sport Science and Wellness Education. Transformational changes were brought about using teamwork, effective managerial and leadership skills to provide new vision. Promoted faculty collaborations and student success with service and operational excellence in the School. From 2005 to 2009 served as the Department Chair of Sport Science and Wellness Education, when it was housed in the College of Education, The University of Akron, Akron, Ohio. 2010-present appointed as the School Director of Sport Science and Wellness Education, when it was housed in the College of Health Professions, The University of Akron, Akron, Ohio. Provided leadership to successfully transfer the School from the College of Education to the newly created Inaugural College of Health Professions with the following schools: Audiology, Nursing, Social Work, Nutrition, Counseling, Allied Health, and Sport Science. Directed interdisciplinary initiatives related to sport, health and wellness in the university, community (Summit County), and disadvantaged/underserved population. Oversaw the planning, design and development of a $8.0 M capital project for building the new School of Sport Science and Wellness Education with state-of-the-art six clinical laboratories, classrooms, and offices for undergraduate and graduate degrees in Athletic Training Education, Sport Studies, Physical and Health Education, Exercise Science, in the newly constructed InfoCision Stadium. One of the labs houses the Hydro Worx pool with immersed treadmill and video to analyze biomechanics of gait/running and also used for rehabilitation protocols. The Program Coordinators are directly supervised along with eighty-five full and part-time faculty. Facilitated development, organization, faculty/staff hiring and operations of the School with a budget of $1.5 M. Initiated and facilitated inter-professional collaboration initiatives within programs in the school, programs in College of Health Professions and with other university schools. Mentored faculty in research and grant activities which generated many refereed publications and obtained competitive grant funding of $2.0 M. Responsible for enhancing and increasing the school’s enrollment and student

credit production which is the highest in the College of Health Professions and the fourth highest in the university overall. There has been a tremendous steady enrollment growth which is continuing. 2015- Present Interim Director, School of Allied Health Technology (College of Health

Professions) Interim School Director of the School of Allied Health Technology. Provided leadership, both administrative and managerial to the following Associate and Bachelor Degree Programs: Respiratory Therapy, Medical Assisting Technology, Surgical Technology, Radiologic Technology and Health Simulation Technology with a total budget of $1.0 M. Facilitated development, organization, faculty hiring for clinical experiences and classroom teaching on line and face-to-face. Program directors, assistant program directors/clinical coordinators were mentored and assisted in running their respective units effectively. All five directors, assistant directors/clinical coordinators and twenty full and part-time faculty members were directly or indirectly supervised. Promoted and assisted in forging new partnerships and collaboration with various community partners in and around Summit County. The School’s main office was reorganized to operate effectively and efficiently by empowering the Administrative Assistant to make decisions to run the office. Provided leadership to successfully transfer the Radiologic Technology program from the Akron Children Hospital to The University of Akron. Oversaw the design and development of a $300,000 Radiologic Technology classroom/laboratory with the state-of- the-art Quantum DS-4 Radiographic System. 2004 – 2005 Assistant Department Chair Responsibilities:

Grants ranging from $500 to $1000 per classroom or building were awarded.
