NEWS & HIGHLIGHTSSTREET DATE: DECEMBER 10, 2013

2013 closes out with a superb selection of recordings that will excite both gift-givers and critics alike. Canadian superstar Angela Hewitt returns with a fourth volume in her ongoing Beethoven Piano Sonata series (p.9). Hewitt sheds new light on sonatas from three different periods in the composer’s life. Also new from Hyperion, Stephen Hough is featured in a specially-priced set of the two Brahms Piano Concertos (p.10). Testament offers one of the most important releases of the Britten centenary year – a recording from May 1962 of the first-ever performance of the War Requiem, recorded live in Coventry Cathedral by the BBC (p.17). There’s still more Britten from LSO Live, with a powerful rendition of the composer’s opera The Turn of The Screw led by Opera North conductor Richard Farnes (p.14) and from Delphian with a two disc set of choral works featuring the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain (p.5). Iván Fischer’s Mahler cycle for Channel marches on with a searing account of the Symphony No.5 (p.3). Pendentif, one of France’s most interesting new pop bands, leads off our non-classical releases with their first full-length album, entitled Mafia Douce (p.30). Jazz trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf’s Illusions offers a dynamic followup to his previous, highly acclaimed album Wind (p.21) and world music stars Bijan Chemirani and Kevin Siddiki team up for a colorful album of improvisations entitled Imaginarium. (p.27).Accords-Croisés

“Rarely has there been such a successful fusion of traditional classical music and big band jazz.”

—WHOLE NOTE MAGAZINE

“It is superb and ahead of its time; being special in every musical department—melodically, harmonically and rhythmically.”

—JAZZ DA GAMA

“Curiously, this music manages to be both intense and insouciant at the same time, and Hewitt finds the perfect balance between the two.”

—CBC MUSIC

Richard Egarr plays HandelPrinted in 1720, the 8 ‘Great’ Suites HWV 426-433 were the first set of keyboard pieces that Handel chose to present to the London public. Performed here by Richard Egarr, this magnificent collection demonstrates Handel’s unique ‘orchestral’ keyboard style and grand sweep, combining Italian virtuosity and the French ‘style brisé.’

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDFollowing up on his highly acclaimed recordings of Mahler’s first, second, fourth and sixth symphonies for Channel Classics, Iván Fischer and his Budapest Festival Orchestra offer a new vision of the Symphony No.5. Its famous Adagietto is one of the most intimate pieces that Mahler ever wrote for orchestra. According to Fischer, the fifth is “the most Jewish of all Mahler’s symphonies. The first movement takes us to the unmistakable mood of Jewish lamentation, the finale to the childlike vision of messianic joy.”

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD“Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” is part of a traditional English bridal rhyme. It refers to gifts of little things given to the bride to bring good

luck. Its message is not to marry on the spur of the moment. However, some choose to throw caution to the wind and still succeed. The “marriage” between Holland Baroque Society and trumpeter Eric Vloeimans exemplifies both approaches. The ensemble represents traditional thought and preparation. The trumpet, constantly improvising, represents the mercurial element. On Old New & Blue, trumpet, bandonéon and historical instruments combine to create a colorful present for all listeners, like the icing on a wedding cake.

IMPORTIn 2014, Merton College in Oxford celebrates its 750th year. For this disc, Benjamin Nicholas and Peter Phillips have created a program that journeys through three quarters of a millennium of choral repertoire. Not just a demonstration

of this accomplished ensemble’s versatility, the recording also provides a bird’s-eye view of some important moments in musical history, and features two composers – John Dunstaple and Lennox Berkeley – associated with the college as well as three works specially commissioned for the anniversary celebrations. The choir, a relatively recent addition to this illustrious college’s complement of treasures, gives stylish and committed performances in the famous acoustic of Merton’s chapel.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDIn the thirty years since the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain were born, they have continued to blossom and flourish. New director Ben Parry was quick to notice they share their birthday in 2013 with Britten’s centenary, and the result is this celebratory double album. Over the course of a year, Delphian has followed the various choirs on their courses, and for the first time all eight groups appear on disc: 600 singers and eight conductors in three different venues. The vast range of Britten’s choral output encompasses work to match the character of each of the different choirs, from the fresh-faced eagerness of the Training Choirs to the maturity and sophistication of the elite National Youth Chamber Choir.

IMPORTThis album contains Hindemith’s most popular orchestral works, including the Balanchine-choreographed Symphonic Metamorphosis, performed with lapidary precision and great empathy by Hyperion regulars the BBC Scottish

Symphony Orchestra and Martyn Brabbins, who have proved themselves consummate interpreters of this composer. Countermanding his reputation as a composer of grim, gritty music, this is Hindemith at his most genuinely enjoyable – as Gavin Plumley writes in his informative booklet notes, “Hindemith’s music is both intelligible and intellectual, as entertaining as it is finely wrought.”

IMPORTHyperion presents a second volume of music from the Conductus repertory – the least-known genre of medieval music – performed by tenors John Potter, Christopher O’Gorman, Rogers Covey-Crump, three singers who combine

expert knowledge of the music with voices of unearthly beauty. This album contains poems set to music from thirteenth-century England and France. The subjects range from straightforward exhortations to the Virgin Mary to criticisms of the Papal Curia and a depiction of the student riots in Orléans in 1236.

IMPORTAngela Hewitt’s acclaimed series of Beethoven sonatas has delighted her fans worldwide, and undoubtedly increased their ranks. Volume four features the little-known Piano Sonata No.11, Op.22 (the last of Beethoven’s ‘early’ sonatas), the Piano Sonata No.18, Op.31 No.3 (nicknamed ‘The Hunt’) and the Piano Sonata No.28, Op.101, the first of the series of Beethoven’s ‘late’ sonatas, when his music became more personal, more intimate, and exploring a new realm of freedom and fantasy.

IMPORTOn this stunning recording of the two piano concertos of Johannes Brahms, Stephen Hough is joined by the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg and conductor Mark Wigglesworth in their Hyperion debut. These works are among the greatest in the genre. Separated by twenty-two years and widely differing in their reception (the first was scorned and the second a huge success), they are monumental in scale, impassioned and truly romantic, forward-looking in form and requiring both great virtuosity and intimacy from the pianist. After performing them in concert for many years (to ecstatic acclaim), Hough’s deep connection to these beloved works can now be appreciated and enjoyed by a much wider audience.

IMPORTCouperin’s Trois Leçons de Ténèbres are amongst the small amount of the composer’s sacred music that was published during his lifetime. They are intensely personal, depicting the prophet Jeremiah’s bitter anguish in settings that

are quite unique. Also included on this mid-priced reissue are Couperin’s joyful motets Laetentur caeli and Venite, exsultemus Domino, and a remarkable Magnificat. Countertenors James Bowman and Michael Chance are celebrated not only as great soloists but matchless duettists.

IMPORTThe songs of Jean Sibelius are a treasure trove and one of music’s best-kept secrets. The composer wrote a surprisingly large number of songs throughout his life, and anybody who responds to the Nordic spirit and subject-matter

of the symphonies and other orchestral music will find much to please them here. They are tuneful, passionate and evocative of the northern latitudes. On this mid-priced reissue, the delightful Swedish soprano Katarina Karnéus, winner of the Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, captures the spirit of these works perfectly.

IMPORTOn this remarkable disc, after a 33-year haitus, pianist Jean-Philippe Collard returns to the music of Chopin. Over the years, he has developed and refined the perfect balance of interpretative options. He sees this disc as both a

break from the past and a renewal. A change of labels and repertory has enabled him to escape a certain routine, to put himself on the line. There are countless benchmark versions on this repertory, but the French pianist has not sought to measure himself against them. Collard’s approach to the composer is honest and totally sincere. Recording Chopin represented a genuine challenge, which he has conquered in a style that is his alone.

IMPORTThe waltz has inspired many composers. Featuring works ranging from the Romantic era to the twentieth century, this collection from pianist Aldo Ciccolini offers a fascinating survey of the genre. Of course, he reserves a special place

for music of French composers, both famous and less well known, a repertoire that has been both a specialty and a passion since the start of his career. With thirteen works by thirteen composers, this recital is organized around two pillars, the most extended pieces on the program: Fauré’s third Valse-Caprice Op.59 and Gabriel Pierné’s suite Viennoise. Ciccolini says of the collection, “It amused me to mix and match all these different pieces, some of them serious, others very tuneful and even popular.”

IMPORTMenahem Pressler is a living legend of the piano. A founding member of the famed Beaux Arts Trio, Pressler’s career was launched in 1946 when he won first prize at the Debussy International Piano Competition. After working as a soloist for a decade, he then became one of the world’s most famous chamber musicians, playing with the Beaux Arts Trio for 53 years. This solo album celebrates Pressler’s 90th birthday with a collection of music from the Viennese Classical tradition. It pairs Schubert’s Piano Sonata No.18 with Beethoven’s Bagatelles and a remarkably poignant A minor Rondo by Mozart. The music here encompasses the full range of emotions, and Pressler has honed his sonority to the point where it resembles a vocal timbre. His sound is infinitely warm, pure and tender, like a fine vintage wine. This disc is a true event, giving listeners the sensation of being transported back to a lost era.

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDIn celebration of the Britten anniversary year, Richard Farnes, Music Director of Opera North, conducts an all-English cast in Britten’s The Turn of the Screw – his most ingeniously crafted opera. Soloists include Andrew Kennedy, Sally Matthews, and 11-year old Michael Clayton-Jolly in the role of Miles. Originally scheduled to be conducted by Sir Colin Davis, Farnes was the natural replacement, having been mentored by the late conductor. Premiered in 1954, Britten’s opera sets Henry James’s remarkable ghost story about a governess and a housekeeper who vow to protect two children from the strange happenings that occur in the grounds of their home.

IMPORTJust in time for Christmas, Philippe Pierlot and the Ricercar Consort present a collection of Cantatas for the season by Johann Sebastian Bach. In these evergreen holiday favorites, flutes, oboes, trumpets, timpani and voices are used to

express the comfort and joy inspired by the Nativity. The result is nothing short of magical. The Ricercar Consort was founded in 1980 by harpsichordist and director Philippe Pierlot. They have made a significant discography, especially on the Mirare label, where their recordings have met with consistent acclaim and respect, in particular for their exceptional Bach Magnificat.

IMPORTSchubert’s last great chamber work, his String Quartet in C of 1828, remained unperformed and unpublished for at least twenty years after his death. It is now regarded as one of the pinnacles of chamber music, and seen by performers as

one of the great challenges to their artistry. Its writing shows the composer in a light-hearted mood, successfully combining weight, profundity, melodic charm with breathtaking technical assurance. On this recording the Kuss Quartet are joined by cellist Miklós Perényi.

IMPORTFlorian Boesch and Malcolm Martineau continue their journey through the Schubert song cycles with Die Schöne Müllerin, composed in 1823 to poetry by Wilhelm Müller. The words are simple but depict powerful human emotions and vivid images of nature. Schubert’s imagination was seized by the opportunities the poems offered, and his music captures the dramatic conflicts and character portraits in a way he never achieved in his operatic works. The same team’s recording of Winterreise was warmly received by critics, with The Guardian calling it, “unquestionably superb,” and Gramophone Magazine hailing it as, “inspired and quite unforgettable.”

IMPORTTestament presents what will undoubtedly be hailed as one of the most important releases of the Britten centenary – the première performance of the War Requiem, recorded live in Coventry Cathedral in May of 1962. The performance is shattering, the sound, surprisingly clear and dynamic. The deep emotion of Wilfred Owen’s poetry is portrayed here with a power and sincerity that has rarely – if ever – been matched in modern recordings. For the opening performance, it was intended that the soloists should be Galina Vishnevskaya (a Russian), Peter Pears (an Englishman) and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (a German), to demonstrate a spirit of unity. However, in an ironic twist, the USSR did not permit Vishnevskaya to travel to Coventry for the event. With only ten days’ notice, Heather Harper stepped in and performed the soprano role brilliantly. Fischer-Dieskau wrote in his autobiography, “The first performance created an atmosphere of such intensity that by the end I was completely undone; I did not know where to hide my face. Dead friends and past suffering arose in my mind.”

IMPORTEarly in 1920, the brash young American composer George Antheil decided to leave his home country and conquer the concert halls of Europe as a pianist. Born in Trenton, New Jersey as a son of German immigrants, Antheil spoke German at home. At ease with the language and the culture, he arrived in Germany in 1922 well-prepared to dazzle Europe with his daring compositions and bold pianism. Most of his experimental piano music was composed in Berlin. Thanks to new discoveries and scholarly research, many of these works can be heard together for the first time on this recording performed by Guy Livingston. Livingston is one of the world’s foremost exponents of Antheil’s music.

IMPORTIn the 1950s, John Cage tried to make the genesis of his compositions dependent on random processes. Several years later this randomness of the compositional process was reflected in the indeterminacy of the performance, with the

aim of separating the compositional design from the interpretive result. Solo for Piano comprises 63 pages with 84 different types of graphical structures, which, due to their shape, are reminiscent of musical notation, but on the other hand, represent no clearly reproducible notes. Here, the notation is modified into a kind of “proposal” for the performer; thus, all kinds of implementation of the score are infinitely possible. On this disc from Wergo, pianist Sabine Liebner presents her own unique interpretation of Cage’s musical proposal.

IMPORTStockhausen’s Amour is a series of five pieces for clarinet based on short poems written as gifts for women whom the composer was deeply connected to. The most complex and hypnotic of these is Die Schmetterlinge spielen (The Butterflies

Playing). Der kleine Harlekin (The Little Harlequin) is probably the best known of Stockhausen’s theatrical works. The clarinetist faces a musically demanding score while wearing a costume and performing a range of dance movements precisely indicated in the score. Wochenkreis (Circle of the Week) describes an initiatory journey from birth to ascension to God, accompanied by the electronic sounds produced by the synthesizer player who has the role of the antagonist Lucifer.

File in: BluesAn American harmonica player, singer and songwriter from Mississippi, Sonny Boy Williamson was one of the greatest bluesmen ever. All his records are classics, but this one is truly unique – it is the cream of two rare, acoustic albums cut in Denmark in 1963. Gentle, personal blues with brilliant harmonica, accompanied by only Matt Guitar Murphy and Memphis Slim on piano. The original LP was listed on Stereophile’s Record 2 Die 4 list. Analogue Productions’ SACD transfer presents these recordings in the best possible audio quality.

IMPORTAfter his remarkably successful acoustic album Wind, Ibrahim Maalouf returns with a more electric sound on Illusions. It is an album born out of, and designed for, performance on stage. It not only features the members of his regular band, Frank Woeste on the keyboard, François Delporte on the guitar, Xavier Rogé on the drums and Laurent David on the bass, but also adds three more quarter-tone trumpeters (Youenn Le Cam, Yann Martin and Martin Saccardy) to bring a even higher level of dynamism to the sound. Maalouf says, “I wanted this album to be festive and full of positive energy… it starts with the most tragic view of the world: cynicism. It then gradually evolves towards light and hope.”

File in: JazzOn Young Bloods, an early hard bop date, altoist Phil Woods and trumpeter Donald Byrd are billed as co-leaders. However, Woods contributed four of the six tunes and consistently takes solo honors on the record. Pianist Al Haig, bassist Teddy Kotick and drummer Charlie Persip offering stimulating accompaniment. A perpetual favorite among Jackie McLean’s earlier recordings, Lights Out finds the hard-swinging alto saxophonist still very much under the wing of Charlie Parker. Yet McLean was beginning to find ways out of the seductive artistic security of Bird imitations. For one thing, he was working with Charles Mingus, and Mingus’s genius as a leader included forcing musicians to look deeply into their most cherished stylistic practices. Jackie’s Pal highlights the perennially underrated Bill Hardman, a star of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, where he shared the front line with McLean and Johnny Griffin. All three recordings have been transferred to SACD by Analogue Productions and are offered in unique “mini LP jacket” packages.

IMPORTFile in: World / Middle EastFresh from his success working with Alexandre Desplat on the Oscar-winning film Argo, the versatile and talented Persian musician Bijan Chemirani joins forces with French guitarist and percussionist Kevin Seddiki, whose diverse projects include collaborations with Al Di Meola, Paolo Pandolfo, Dino Saluzzi and Yasmine Hamdan, for an album of acoustic duets entitled Imaginarium. The album’s mesmerizing improvisations transport the listener far from reality and the virtuosic dialogue between Seddiki and Chemirani weaves a colorful musical tapestry that stimulates the imagination.

IMPORTFile in: World / AfricaDebademba is a group formed from the magical encounter of two fellow musicians: guitarist and inventive beat master Abdoulaye Traoré from Burkina Faso and Malian singer Mohamed Diaby,

a charismatic griot. These colorful characters are, like the other members of the group, Parisian Africans who are very prominent on the capital’s cosmopolitan live music scene. The kind of music they make is modern and explosive, drawing from afrobeat, highlife and mbalax styles, with hints of Mandinka music mixed in, all combined with strong blues elements and the occasional nod to rock. Souleymane is a powerful manifesto and an invitation to celebrate.

IMPORTFile in: World / GypsyTo celebrate Bratsch’s fortieth anniversary, World Village has compiled a superb anthology that includes not only the band’s most famous pieces but also many rarities. In addition to the set’s three CDs and fascinating and

comprehensive booklet, there is also a bonus DVD included, filled with unpublished performances and other archival materials. Brut de Bratsch explores two key aspects of the band’s musical vision. They are both pioneers of world fusion and an independent, militant group for whom music and commitment have always been at the center of their art.

IMPORTFile in: World / Middle EastThe 19th century’s fascination with all things Eastern produced a real artistic excitement. This enthusiasm had a deep and permanent influence on the West, especially in its poetic and literary

production. Notably, works by the great Persian poet Hafez inspired Goethe in the creation of one of his last works, the West-Eastern Divan. It is this seemingly unlikely poetic connection that inspired Abed Azrié’s latest musical opus, Hâfez and Goethe / Divân, which explores this surprising artistic bridge between cultures from a decidedly 21st Century perspective.

IMPORTFile in: Pop / Rock Pendentif are one of the most charming newcomers on the French pop scene. This gang of five is bound together by their diverse influences – the brazen freshness of Jacques Rozier’s movies, the exquisite glamour of Chromatics, the unmatched casualness of Pavement and the gazing electronica of Toro Y Moi. Building on the buzz generated by their first EP in 2011, Pendentif offer their first full-length album entitled Mafia Douce (Sweet Mafia), an oxymoron used to describe a group of friends. Their summery single “Embrasse Moi” (Kiss Me) boasts swinging melodies and heart-melting lyrics. Pendentif bring new colours to French Pop. With a rare groove and perfectly crafted song writing, Pendentif are a trans-Atlantic voyage halfway between light-hearted pop and music to dance to.
