• 5G is expected to provide new capabilities to satisfy user demands.

– Over 78% of the world’s mobile data traffic will be video by 2021.

• 5G will bring the means to deliver new immersive audio-visual media.

7

• Suitable to deliver the same content to an unlimited number of users/devices within the covered area, with a defined and stable quality of service

– Without substantially increasing network capacity requirements, energy consumption, costs

• Can offer huge capacity gains and sustainable operation of services, ensuring a cost effective high quality delivery mechanism

– This also allows valuable network resources to be reused for unicast-only applications

The Role of Broadcast in 5G

8

• Innovative 5G-TV use cases require broadcast transmissions!

• Big potential in convergence of fixed and mobile broadband networks for large-scale media delivery.

• Point to multipoint as a delivery optimization tool, rather than a service.

• Broadcasters interest in 3GPP technologies has increased recently.– enTV 4G Rel-14 has incorporated many requirements, but suffers from the eMBMS legacy.

The Role of Broadcast in 5G

Broadcast allows an infinite number of users to receive the same content at the same time, using just a fixed number of resources.

Page 9: El rol de la TV en 5G: desafíos y oportunidades“N MANUEL FUENTES.pdf · 3 5G - Overview Data Rate 20 Gbit/s (user 100 Mbit/s) Mobility 500 km/h Latency 1 ms Connection density

9

• As part of the Rel-16 framework, 3GPP has started the normative work to further develop LTE-based 5G Terrestrial Broadcast.

Study Item

• To perform a gap analysis and compare the capabilities of eMBMS Rel-14 against 5G requirements 5G.

• Main enhancements identified:i. To support integration of HPHT (high-power high-tower) broadcast infrastructures for large SFN coverage.

ii. To enable high speed reception from medium-scale SFN areas.

Work Item

• Solutions to meet the identified gaps:– To specify new numerologies and signaling for fixed and mobile reception in MPMT and HPHT

environments

– Enhance (if required) physical channels and signals.

10

• Hybrid broadcast service:– Users have access to linear or non-linear audio-visual material.

– Content available as they move between different locations or environments in a seamless manner.

– Transmissions over:

– TV station

– 5G Cellular network

– Wi-Fi

11

• VR/AR Broadcast:– Virtual and augmented

reality content sent to many users at once.

Use Cases in 5G TV

• Remote live production:– Professional content is produced

remotely in specific events.

– Reduced cost and more flexibility.

• Broadcast is key in many 5G use cases, but they were not considered in the first phase of 5G (Rel’15-Rel’16)

• The project did not only considered TV and multimedia, but also:

Motivation: lack of broadcast in Rel-15

Themes and Cities• The technical solutions will be validated around three themes:

– The touristic city (Turin, IT): set of use cases for improving the touristic experience at a city with media applications.

– The safe city (Rennes, FR): eHealth use cases that ensure travelers and citizens that, even in case of trouble, they will recover thanks to management of an emergency situation.

– The mobility efficient (Athens, GR): the use cases depict how airport processes can be improved leveraging 5G both from the side of the visitors and of the airport management.

5G Broadcast trials in Turin2 different approaches:

• Mixed unicast/broadcast services in cellular networks– MNO-Centric: The content is transmitted via the cellular 5G network in a mixed mode where

multicast/broadcast and unicast share resources

– Part of the content needs to be personalized. Some information is delivered by the user in the uplink.

• 5G Broadcast delivery to massive audiences– Broadcast-Centric: Receive-only content to all users at once, using High-Power High-Tower (HPHT)

broadcaster’s infrastructure.
