Copy of the passport, with the Brazilian Temporary Visa IV (student visa) or the RNE.
Tuitions and fees at USP
USP is a public state institution that receives exchange students at no cost. Thus, no scholarship

There is not an official term for the visas insurance; however we advise you to apply for it at least 3
weeks in advance, to avoid annoying situations. Check with the Consulate if you need any vaccination.
ATTENTION: Under no circumstance should foreign nationals be accepted as exchange or regular
students to come to Brazil without having obtained one of the mentioned temporary visas. The
university is forbidden to enroll students with a tourist visa, and it is not possible to acquire the correct
visa once you have entered Brazil – in this case you will be obliged to return to your home country and
obtain the proper one.
Budget – Cost of Living in São Paulo
The exchange student must prepare his/her budget in advance according to the cost of living in São Paulo.
To gather information about it, please we recommend you to consult the following websites:
Ranking do Custo de Vida
Custo de vida em São Paulo
Cost of living in São Paulo
Expat Guide São Paulo for Working and Living in São Paulo
Foreign National Register (RNE) at the
Federal Police Office in GRU Airport
There is often confusion between the CIE, RNE and CPF. The CIE is the Foreigners ID card and the RNE
is a Foreigners Registration Number.
You receive your RNE number when you receive your visa, the number also appears on your CIE card.
When the Federal Police stamp your passport with your visa, they will also give you a Protocol (this is
equivalent to a temporary ID card) this will have your RNE number and can be used as proof of ID.
It can take several months between getting your visa and receiving your CIE cards.
The RNE only expires in certain circumstances, for example, if the individual leaves Brazil for a period
of 2 years, the CIE is valid for 10 years and then has to be renewed.
The CPF number (Cadastro de Pessoa Física) is the Individual Taxpayer’s Number and is required for
many everyday transactions in Brazil, including opening a bank account, applying for a job, subscribing
to a mobile phone company, buying a car or property and requesting the Public Transportation Card
with Students Discount (Bilhete Único de Estudante).

Foreign National Register (Registro Nacional de Estrangeiros - RNE)
When landing in Brazil, at the São Paulo International Airport (GRU) in Guarulhos, the student should
go the Federal Police Office at the Terminal 1’s second floor (opening hours from 8am to 5 pm).
With his/her (a) visa, (b) the student/pos-doc researcher/ visitor special form and (c) passport, the
student will be received to ask for this Foreign ID card (CIE) that is guaranteed by the protocol called
RNE.
It is necessary to handle (d) 2 photos 3cmx4cm (passport standard) – if you don’t have it is possible to
take them inside the airport – and (e) pay two taxes (about R$124,23 + R$64,58) at the bank Banco do
Brasil near the Federal Police Office.
If the student still don’t have and (f) address in Brazil, he/she can indicate the Institution address or
his/her Research Director.
This procedure is mandatory to foreigners, who must present themselves to the Federal Police in,
maximum 30 days from their arrivals. If the visitor don’t do it at the Federal Police Office at the GRU
Airport, he/she may do it at the Office located at Lapa – São Paulo (Address: Rua D’Antola, 95 – Lapa de
Baixo – São Paulo – near to the Piqueri Bridge). We recommend though, if it is possible, to take
advantage of the facility in Airport Office, in order to avoid big displacements in the city. This document
(RNE) will be necessary to ask for the Public Transportation Card and others facilities.
Individual Taxpayer’s Number (CPF)
Still inside the GRU Airport, with the (a) RNE protocol, the student may ask for his/her CPF emission.
He/she might go to the Banco do Brasil or a Post Office (Correios), (b) pay the CPF tax (R$5,70) and fill
the (c) CPF form. (d) It is possible that they ask for a document with the student’s mother’s name.
To finalize the CPF emission, the student must (e) go to the Receita Federal Office, with passport, receipt
of the tax payment and the form filled. The Office address is:
SHOPPING LIGHT (2o. andar)
CAC RAMOS DE AZEVEDO
R. Coronel Xavier de Toledo, 23

This procedure is not mandatory, however it will be necessary in case the student wants to open an
