Na trajectória delineada, torna-se, por conseguinte, oportuno registar alguns dados biográficosdos seus cinco membros honorários, por terem dado um contributo significativo ao Curso deMestrado em Cor na Arquitectura, por mim criado e coordenado em 2003 na FA/UTL, a saber,os Professores Byron Mikellides, Jean-Philippe Lenclos, Pancho Miranda Guedes, Frank Mahnkee Luis Badosa.

Ainda para o mesmo efeito, alude-se às conferências e seminários realizados em Portugal,Inglaterra, Espanha e Hong Kong, às actividades profissionais e pedagógicas, bem como àsintervenções da responsabilidade dos Associados no âmbito da cor na arquitectura em Portugale na Holanda. Junta-se a investigação académica sobre temáticas tratadas em mestrados edoutoramentos e outros projectos de investigação realizados em colaboração com o LABCORda FA/UTL, de que se destaca o projecto “Léxico da Cor” – uma empresa de fôlego que sepretende venha a despertar o interesse de todos os Associados para que nela colaborem,independentemente da sua formação e actividade académica ou profissional e que se encontrapublicado no nosso site www.apcor@apcor.com.

A focalização da pesquisa dos Associados fundadores da APCOR tem vindo a alargar-se porinfluência dos novos Associados, desenvolvidas em áreas que cruzam a arquitectura e o designcom a filosofia, a psicologia e a neurociência. Com o advento das novas tecnologias e materialidades,têm-se afirmado as potencialidades do uso da cor na Arquitectura e disciplinas dela afins, e a cortornou-se um campo de experimentação de múltiplas abordagens, independentemente da dimensãoe da escala do objecto em estudo. A luz e a sombra também veiculam significados, símbolos eexpressões que variam segundo o contexto, o tipo de reflexão da luz e a qualidade lumínica,deslocando-se como membranas na superfície do globo terrestre, sob a dependência do contextogeográfico e cultural. Daí, que as actividades desenvolvidas pelos Associados denotem oreconhecimento do valor da multiplicidade de experiências e procurem aprofundar estes camposférteis da cor, na tentativa de se entender a transformação da substância material (lumen) emsubstância espiritual (lux).

The Portuguese Colour Association-Associação Portuguesa da Cor was founded in 2003, officiallyregistered in 2005 and was voted unanimously regular member to the AIC - Association Internationalede la Couleur, by its Executive Committee at the 10th Congress of the AIC that was held inGranada, in May 2005.This Newsletter recalls the landmarks and the most significant drivingagents of the historic unfolding of the Portuguese Colour Association, with references and reportsof activities that were developed by its members during the time period of 2006- 2007.

This also represents an opportunity to record biographic data of our five honorary members-Professors Byron Mikellides, Jean-Philippe Lenclos, Pancho Miranda Guedes, Frank Mahnke andLuis Badosa-who had a significant role in the Master Degree Course in “Colour and Architecture”that I set up and co-ordinated in 2003 at the Faculty of Architecture-The Lisbon Technical University.

Reports include conferences and seminars held in Portugal, England, Spain, and Hong Kong;professional and educational activities as well as colour interventions carried out by the membersin Portugal and Holland. The academic research is highlighted and ranges themes for masterand doctoral degrees that as well as the research projects in partnership with the ColourLab ofthe Faculty of Architecture, in particular “Colour Lexicon” for its far-reaching characteristics. Thesubject relating to the Portuguese colour lexicon is posted on our website www. and provides theopportunity for bringing together members from every disciplinary background, academic orprofessional activity.

Meanwhile, the research focus of the founding members has been expanded through the influenceof the new members to embrace a variety of fields that intersect architecture and design withphilosophy, psychology and the neurosciences. With the new technologies and materials thepotencialities of the use of colour in architecture have been disclosed and enhanced and colourhas become a field of experimentation of multiple approaches whatever the scale of the objectof study may be.

Light and shadow are also vehicles of communication of meanings, symbols, and expressionsthat vary according to context, typology of reflected light and the quality of lighting that dislocate,as membranes, on the surface of the terrestrial globe according to geographic and cultural contexts.The value of the multiplicity of experiences is acknowledged by the members of the PCA whoseactivities cross-fertilize fields of colour, driven by the need to understand the transformation of thematerial substance (lumen) into spiritual substance (lux).

A APCOR foi concebida em 2003 e existe comoorganismo oficial por escritura pública de Abril de 2005,tendo sido vinculada à Associação Internacional da Cor(AIC) no 10º Congresso da AIC, realizado em Granada,em Maio de 2005. Trata-se de um período de existênciajá considerável, e, por esse facto, a presente Newsletterrelembra os marcos e os agentes motores do percursohistórico da Associação, com referências e relatos deactividades e interesses dos seus Associados e dandodestaque ao período de 2006-2007.

It is my honor to inform you that the Portuguese Color Association has been accepted as the newest

regular member to AIC. This occurred by unanimous vote at the AIC Executive Committe meeting

that was held during our 10th Congress in Granada, Spain last May of 2005. We proudly announced

your organization’s acceptance at the AIC General Assembly held on Wednesday, May 11, 2005.

The decision was unanimous due to your diligent efforts to fulfill our membership criteria :

1. Your organization should be open to anyone in your country and should cover all aspects of

color.

2. Your organization should follow the spirit of the AIC objectives as outlined in the AIC Statutes.

3. State the number of meetings you have each year and the number of attendees at each

meeting

4. Please make available to the AIC EC some official statement of your financial position

5. Please obtain a letter of recommendation from other AIC regular members (Verbal

recommendations are acceptable as well.)

6. Show the AIC EC your statutes or constitution if you have such documentation.

Maria, as President of the Portuguese Colour Association, you will be the official representative to

the AIC. We look forward to working with you and your organization in the future. We are happy that

Portugal has been added to our AIC worldwide family. Welcome !

My Presidency will be ending by December 31,2005. Please contact our new President, Professor

José Caivano, beginning in January of 2006. It has been my pleasure to work with you over the past

year. I look forward to seeing you at future AIC meetings. Perhaps one day, your organization can

host an AIC meeting.

O tempo tudo esbate ou de todo apaga, nomeadamente a memória dos acontecimentos derelevo para a cultura e as comunidades, se nada permanecer escrito de forma duradoura.Por essa razão, entendi registar aqui o meu testemunho sobre a história da fundação daAPC e sua afiliação à AIC, enquanto interveniente directa no processo, a fim de que osnovos e os futuros Associados tenham uma informação da génese e do desenvolvimentoda nossa Associação.E, começando pelos factos iniciais, relembro que a Associação Portuguesa da Cor / APCORfoi fundada no contexto da primeira edição do Curso de Mestrado em Cor na Arquitecturada Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, em 2003.

Enquanto autora do curso e sua coordenadora científico-pedagógica, coube-me convidarinvestigadores com obra notória na área da cor, um dos quais é o Professor Byron Mikellides,Director do Colour Research Section, a quem eu já conhecia de anteriores contactos coma Universidade de Oxford Brookes. O entusiasmo com que leccionou a disciplina de Corem Arquitectura e o estímulo que deu à fundação da APCOR foram determinantes de umprocesso que culminou com a encaenia – o momento simbólico da fundação do grupo dacor -, na sua presença, em 7 de Junho de 2003, nas instalações da Faculdade de Arquitecturade Lisboa.Iniciava-se, deste modo, a formação de um grupo de investigadores vinculados ao Mestrado,e por isso detentores da sensibilidade necessária para cultivar e aprofundar o fenómenocomplexo e mágico da cor e suas vertentes teóricas e práticas, que reconheciam como áreado conhecimento múltiplo e transdisciplinar.

Dada esta circunstância da sua génese, o contacto com a comunidade internacional,alcançado através do convite feito a outros Professores – Jean-Philippe Lenclos, FrankMahnke e Luis Badosa, a que se juntou Pancho Miranda Guedes -, a vocação internacionalda APCOR ficou estabelecida em definitivo.

Nesta oportunidade, a APCOR, e em especial a sua Presidente, destaca e agradece, umavez mais, a dedicação com que o Professor Byron Mikellides deu o seu precioso contributo.Uma das suas diligências consistiu em assumir a responsabilidade de dirigir, em Julho de2003, a primeira carta de recomendação à então Presidente da AIC - Association Internationalede la Couleur, Paula Alessi, a “abençoar” a integração da APCOR na AIC, o mesmo fazendocom o Vice-Presidente, Paul Green-Armytage, o qual escreveu a segunda carta exigida pela

AIC.Até Maio de 2005, houve troca de correspondência entre a Presidente da AIC e a Presidente da APCOR,tendo por objectivo caracterizar a organização em termos dos seus objectivos, estatutos, reuniões efilosofia subjacente à sua criação, de modo a aferir-se a concordância entre os dois organismos, parase justificar que a APCOR se tornasse membro regular da AIC.A Presidente ia veiculando com regularidade a informação necessária ao Comité Executivo da AIC.Finalmente, no 10º Congresso Internacional da AIC, realizado entre 8 e 13 de Maio, em Granada, -após a minha apresentação da Associação Portuguesa da Cor e a argumentação em prol dos seusinteresses, enquanto sua Presidente -, o Comité Executivo da AIC, constituído por Paula Alessi,Presidente, José Luís Caivano, à altura Vice-Presidente, Frank Rochow, Secretário e Tesoureiro, e osvogais Paul Green-Armytage, Aran Hansuebsai, Hirohisa Yaguch e Joaquín Campos Acosta, votou porunanimidade a integração da APCOR na AIC.A decisão foi comunicada na assembleia-geral de 11 de Maio e publicada no nº 19 da Newsletter daAIC (pp.1; 3; 12). A nós tem cabido – e sempre cumprirá – honrar o elevado reconhecimento do méritoe da função da APCOR, com frutos da qualidade que todos desejamos, neste espaço de convívio ede colaboração que nos foi dado construir.

Time diminishes everything or totally extinguishes the memory of relevant community and cultural eventsif they are not written in a lasting manner. This understanding framed the need to record my first handtestimony regarding the foundation of the Portuguese Colour Association (APC-Associação Portuguesada Cor), enabled by my direct contact with the entire process. The account ranges the events pertainingto the foundation of the Portuguese Colour Association as well as its membership to the AIC - AssociationInternational de la Couleur, thus providing the new and future members with the full information of thebirth and development of our Association.

In my capacity of author of the Master Course and its scientific co-ordinator I invited researchers withnotorious work in the area of colour, namely Professor Byron Mikellides, Head of the Colour ResearchSection at Oxford Brookes University whom I knew from previous academic contacts established withthe University. The enthusiasm with which he lectured the module of Colour in Architecture and the wayhe stimulated the creation of the PCA were decisive in the process that culminated with the encaenia- the symbolic moment of the foundation of the colour group- in his presence, on the 7th July of 2003at the Faculty of Architecture in Lisbon.The group was launched with researchers that were bound to the Master Course on Colour and therefore,detaining the necessary sensitivity to cultivate and study in depth the complex and magic phenomenonof colour and its theoretical and practical components, and were able to understand its multiple andtransdisciplinary nature.

Due to the contacts with the international community that resulted from the invitation of other Professors

- Jean-Philippe Lenclos, Frank Mahnke and Luis Badosa, later joined by Pancho Miranda Guedes-, the international appeal of the PCA was definitely established. I would like to take this opportunityto thank and point out, once again, Professor Byron Mikellides’ dedication and precious contribution.He also promptly took upon himself the responsibility of addressing the first letter of recommendationin July of 2003 to the president of the AIC, Ms Paula Alessi with his "blessing" for the Group duringits application for the AIC membership, and the other to the Vice-President at the time, Paul Green-Armytage who wrote the second letter required by the AIC.

Until May 2005 there was a continuous exchange of ideas through various means of communicationthat aimed at the clarification and characterization of the PCA in terms of its objectives, regulation,meetings and the underlying philosophy of the group to ascertain whether the two organizationswere aligned and in agreement as to fulfilling the requirements of the AIC membership criteria.The President conveyed the information on a regular basis to the Executive Committee of the AIC.

Finally, at the 10th International Congress of the AIC (8-13 May), that took place in Granada, inmy capacity of President of the Portuguese Colour Association; I presented the PCA to the AICExecutive Committee at their Meeting held during the Congress. The Portuguese Colour Associationwas accepted as regular member to the AIC by unanimous vote of the Executive Committeemembers: Ms Paula Alessi, President, Professor José Luis Caivano, Vice-President, Dipl-Eng.Frank Rochow, Secretary /Treasurer and EC Members Mr. Paul Green-Armytage, Professor AranHansuebsai, Professor Hirohisa Yaguchi and Professor Joaquím Campos Acosta. This decisionwas announced at the General Assembly of the 11th May and published in the AIC Newsletter of2005 (pp.1;3;12).

It is now our duty to fulfil and to honour the recognition of the merit of the Portuguese ColourAssociation with work of quality, within this space of communication and collaboration that wasgiven for us to build in the present and for the future.

Dear Members of the AIC- International Colour Association Executive Committee,

The Portuguese Colour Association is honoured to be member of the International Colour Association.

This membership represents a landmark for our participation in an international forum where the

exchanges of ideas allow for the process of transmutation of the state of knowledge on colour to take

place. At this larger scale of interaction, we hope to contribute positively to the development of

research, educational background and communication of the phenomenon that brought us together.

On behalf of the Portuguese Colour Association I would like to extend my gratitude to all Executive

Committee members for the words with which you welcomed our association as a new member of

the International Colour Association during the Executive Committee meeting held at the AIC05

Congress in Granada.

In the various phases required to join the International Colour Association, President Paula Alessi
