FUTURE PERSPECTIVES FORPROJETO UERÊ EXPANSION
PUTTING INTOPERSPECTIVE
Children that suffer trauma, due to constant physical and
psychological abuse, often have their cognitive and learning
abilities hindered.

WHERE DOESPROJETO UERÊ COME IN
Projeto UERÊ was founded 17 years ago by Yvonne Bezerra de
Mello, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
It is a Social Association that takes care of kids living in
conditions of extreme poverty and violence, that suffer from
cognitive blockages due to the harsh conditions they live in.
It is located inside the slum complex of Maré (Complexo de
Favelas da Maré), one of the biggest and most dangerous slums
in Rio and that as of Sep.2014 has not yet been pacified.
Ultimately, Projeto UERÊ is a non-profitable organization,
which depends on donations from the private sector
(companies, individuals) and has no link to any governmental party.
PROJETO UERÊ AND THEBRAZILIAN REALITY
UERÊ’s target audience is approx. 50% of all children going to
public schools in Brazil.
Employing our own pedagogical methodology - the UERÊ
MELLO Pedagogy - we can cognitively rehabilitate these
children, in up to six to eighteen months, with no modification in
the ministry’s official school curriculum.
Every year we receive about 400 children in these very
conditions, between the ages of 6 and 18. In the past 17 years,
over 7.000 children and youth passed through UERÊ. Children
that were not left to chance in the streets were not involved with
drug traffic inside the community and 84% of them were able to
go to either high school or technical-school.

SHORT TERM VISION(1 to 2 years)
To keep children and youth in the surrounding slums of Projeto
UERÊ out of the streets, safe and to provide them with quality
education.
Projeto UERÊ, as of today, is operating in its full capacity and we
have a waiting list of over 100 children wanting to join us.
Since the participation of the children and youth is exempted from any charges to the parents, our major bottlenecks are financial resources to hire teachers to hold classes, to increase the number of classrooms and the purchase of food and supplies for the children.
SOCIAL IMPACT
Children and youth that participate in Projeto UERÊ have
increased chances to complete middle schools in which they are enrolled and to enter high schools and/or technical schools.
Since 2006, when we started doing more accurate
measurements, we registered:
96% success rate in cognitive rehabilitation;
84% of children and youth that finish middle school
alongside Projeto UERÊ enter high school and/or
technical school.

LONG TERM VISION(5 to 10 years)
To have the UERÊ-MELLO Pedagogy internationally recognized
as a successful methodology in cognitive recovery and
rehabilitation.
Today, with 2 books about the U-M Pedagogy already written
and a whole collection of study books (math, history,
Portuguese, geography, health, ecology, etc.), Yvonne has
worked to enhance and fine tune the methodology into a new
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT SYSTEM.
The method can be employed not only with impoverished
children and youth, but also with children living in countries at
war, refugees, and also middle and upper class students who
show clear signs of learning disabilities.

Additionally, the U-M
Methodology was established in
2006 as official city Public Policy
by the Rio municipal
government, so all teachers
entering public schools have to
be trained in the methodology
prior to giving classes.
THE UNESCOEXPERIENCE
In 2012, UNESCO alongside with
Rio's city government, decided
to apply the UERÊ-MELLO
Pedagogy in the 20 worst
public schools in Rio and
evaluate the resonance of the children and faculty.
The experiment was a huge
success! 71%of teachers foundit very simple toapply

89%of the school

effective
78%of faculty and
principals considermontitoring and
tutoring essential
Since 2008 the methodology is an
official educational public policy of the
Rio government;
The methodology can be structured
and presented as an 80 hour long
extension course, so teachers can
qualify individually.
The UERÊ-MELLO Pedagogy is a new
classroom management system that
can be applied in any classroom where
there are kids with learning disabilities;
FINDING NEW WAYS
Projeto UERÊ has always been a NGO being 100% dependent on donations.
To improve the sustainability of Projeto UERÊ, Yvonne and Luciana (statutory President and Controller of Finances) took a
course, offered by Ashoka McKinsey, on how to pool the existing specific strenghts such as the many successes with
abandoned and traumatised chidren, an established methodology and Yvonne’s long-standing experience.
The key piece of that puzzle was to transform the
methodology into a sellable product.
Private or public schools can empower their faculty in the U-M Pedagogy. The standard
format includes 3 day training, remote monitoring during 3 months and evaluation of
the results obtained by the teachers.
Additional to training individual schools, the U-M Pedagogy can also be sold to municipalities,
for training of all existing and new public workers (teachers and principals). Format and
conditions varies according to city staff size.
e-LEARNING
The U-M Pedagogy was also turned into an 80-hour long course and further on converted to a distance-learning platform, where teachers and pedagogy students can individually, train on the
method.
GOVERNMENTTRAINING
FACULTYTRAINING
UNIVERSITIES
Another goal is to have the e-learning set as an extension class for universities graduating
Pedagogues, Educationalists and Teachers. In this way, every 6 months period the e-learning
would have guaranteed students.
THE GOALS TOMONETIZATION
SUSTAINABILITY OF THEMODEL SCHOOL IN RIO
1 2 3The e-learning is our
main goal now. It´s
already up and
running and was also
translated into
English. It is an easily
scalable model and,
upon reaching 160
new students every
month, already
accounts for half the
total annual budget
of Projeto UERÊ in
gross income.
The e-learning can
also be sold to
universities and
taught in Pedagogy
and Teaching courses,
as an online class - a
model already
employed by many
universities around
the world. Over 190
thousand students
enter pedagogy
graduations in Brazil
every year.
Besides that, the U-M
Pedagogy training
can also be sold as a
classroom course,
where Yvonne would
personally train and
monitor faculty for an
agreed period. That
model can be applied
in individual private
schools or for a whole
municipality's staff, as
it was done in Rio
from 2008 to 2012.
UMBRELLAFOUNDATIONS
We currently have almost 70% of all our donations coming from
abroad.
Our main sponsors are in Europe and, therefore, we established
very important partnerships there, that work as UMBRELLA
FOUNDATIONS for Projeto UERÊ.
They support us in every way they can, especially by not
charging us for administration costs on donations destined to
us, thus considerably lowering our administrative overhead.
They can also issue government aproved tax-deductible receipts
for the donors inside Germany.
