Monitoring of ammonia volatilization losses from irrigated wheat under different temperature and nitrogen regimes

Abstract

The ammonia (NH3) emission causes different environmental issues along with the nutrient loss which eventually translated to loss in crop yield. In recent years, nitrogen management has been commonly used to improve crop productivity thus this is imperative to investigate the effect o elevated temperature on ammonia volatilization. To examine the effects of various nitrogen and temperature levels on NH, volatilization, the wheat cultivar HD 2967 was taken for experimentation under temperature gradient tunnel (TGT). The four different temperatures viz., ambient temperature (T-,) and three elevated temperature over ambient in gradient tunnel temperatures namely T2, 3 and T4 and four doses of nitrogen viz., 0, 90,120 and 150 kg ha"1 in combinations were taken as the experimentation treatments. Our results indicated that NH3 volatilization flux positively increased with nitrogen application rate and temperature level and peaked at 5-6* days after nitrogen application. We also reported that the total loss of NH4+ via volatilization ranges from 3.4 to 12.3 kg ha-1 season-1 which was highest when nitrogen level was N150 (T4). The rate of NH3 volatilization was significantly rises with the rise in temperature and it was observed more in treatments kept in TGT (T To and T4) as compared to the treatments in ambient temperature. Amount of nitrogen depletion in soil followed the similar pattern of NH3 volatilization in the different treatments. We conclude that, the maximum increase in loss percentage (73%) was recorded at N150 as compared to Nn whereas the rate of NH3 volatilization under maximum temperature also increased with the maximum increase (13.6%) in T4 as compared with Tr The quantity of NH3 lost though volatilization after application of nitrogen and temperature; both showed highest range at the panicle initiation stage. With higher rate of nitrogen application resulted with higher wheat production and nitrogen accumulation crop biomass, but nitrogen use efficiency decreased. NH3 volatilization increased remarkably when the nitrogen fertilizer application level exceeded 150 kg ha . Overall, this quantification will help deciding the appropriate nitrogen application so that the environmental hazards associated with excess N fertilizer application can be mitigated.
