Grande Viagem Região do globo atapetada de verde, fendida por vulcões, aplanada em vastas pastagens, em areais visitados pelo sol e em imensas extensões aquáticas, com relevos de serranias, de fiordes e de árvores de densos bosques, a Nova Zelândia é um país onde toda a variedade paisagística se concentra: planícies, planaltos, lagos, praias tropicais, irrupções vulcânicas, florestas húmidas, recifes de corais, cascatas, montanhas cobertas de neve durante todo o ano, géisers, glaciares aqui habitam, numa entusiasta exibição da natureza. Esta vitalidade tem na formação do território a sua explicação: há aproximadamente três milhões de anos, este pedaço de terra irrompeu do oceano, em lava incandescente, e moldou-se em duas ilhas, assentadas em placas tectónicas móveis, estando a Nova Zelândia numa constante viagem, de 26 milímetros por ano, para Norte. Encaixadas entre a Austrália, a Poli-nésia e o Pólo Sul, as duas ilhas que compõem a Nova Zelândia possuem características climatéricas, geológicas e paisagísticas diversas, que convergem na sua multíplice e estonteante beleza. Long Distance A world region carpeted with green, cut in half by volcanoes, smoothed by vast pastures, by sun kissed beaches and by huge expanses of water, with backdrops made up of mountains, fjords and dense forests packed with ancient trees, New Zealand is a country where landscape variety is concentrated into one space. This is home to plains, plateaux, lakes, subtropical beaches, volcanic erup-tions, rainforests, coral reefs, waterfalls, mountains covered with snow all year through, geysers and glaciers, in an enthusiastic exhibition of nature. The explanation for this vitality lies in the formation of the land: about three million years ago, this piece of land erupted from the ocean, in a blaze of lava, moulding into two islands, sat on moving tectonic plates, where New Zealand is on a constant voyage north, 26 millimetres a year. Surrounded by Australia, Polynesia and the South Pole, the two islands that make up New Zea-land possess diverse climatic, geologi-cal and scenic characteristics, coming together in astounding and manifold beauty. On the North Island, with its more temperate climate, we find green pastures, volcanoes and geysers; on the South Island, with its wilder scenery, forests and fjords are joined by snowy peaks reaching up to the sky. Coube a James Cook esse feito, tendo, em 1769, o capitão inglês dado início ao processo de colonização. Após anos de guerra com os maoris, a Coroa Britânica assina em 1840 o tratado de Waitangi, que torna a Nova Zelândia oficialmente numa colónia inglesa, con-fiscando aos nativos as suas melhores terras. Só em 1955 estes conseguem rea-ver algumas das suas propriedades, ten-do sido, nos últimos 30 anos, os direitos da população maori um importante ponto de debate, com reivindicação do uso da sua língua e da preservação da sua cultura e da sua arte.Frugalmente povoada e essencialmente rural, a Nova Zelândia tem nas suas cidades os principais pontos residen-ciais: Wellington, a capital, e Auckland, a mais dinâmica e habitada, são as duas mais importantes urbes da Ilha Nor-te. Também nesta ínsula se encontra Rotorua, a cidade do enxofre, centro da região do povo maori, onde os múlti-plos géisers, fumarolas e nascentes de lama efervescente fazem dela um burgo repleto de termas ao ar livre. The Maori people were only able to reclaim some of their properties in 1955, while in the last 30 years Maori rights have proved an important point of debate, with the assertion of the use of the Maori language and the preservation of their culture and art.Sparsely populated and essentially rural, New Zealand main residential hubs are its cities: Wellington, the capital, and Auckland, more dynamic and popu-lated, are the two largest cities on the North Island. This island is also home to Rotorua, the city of sulphur, centre of the region of the Maori people, where hundreds of geysers, fumaroles and bubbling mud pools turn the town into an open air hot spring. On the South Island Christchurch is the largest city, while Queenstown is considered the world’s greatest extreme sports tour-ist destination. But it is outside the urban centres that we find New Zealand’s major attrac-tions: the volcanic valley of Waimangu, a magical place of lush vegetation and colourful lakes; the stunning turquoise lakes of the Rotorua region, dotted with black swans with their red bills; the vast paradise of abundant forests of the Te Urewera National Park; the glacial land-
