(The Passover Haggadah) This Passover I was blessed to attend three Passover Seders. Two in Wickliffe, Ohio, (near Cleveland) and, of course, our own community Seder. Each one was very different from the other. For those of you who don’t recognize the name Wickliffe, Ohio, it is the home of the Telshe Yeshiva. Perhaps you know the Telshe Yeshiva by the Hanukkah candles and Passover Haroseth they send out to Jews all over the world as a fundraiser? That’s how I knew them before my elder son, Shahri, now called Ezra, went to study there. The first night of Pesach, Ezra and his wife, my daughter-in-law, Adina, warned us that the Seder was all about the kids and not about the food. They were right. The host rabbi has 7 children from 14 years to 19 months, including two twin boys age 6. I learned about the Passover story through their eyes as well as a new way to hide the afikomen. I can’t wait until next year at our children’s service to try it out. Also I learned how good Passover jelly- beans were as a reward for correct answers to trivia questions. One of the most interesting things I learned at both Seders was that they interpret the rule to finish the Passover meal before midnight a bit differently than we do. We interpret midnight at 12:00 PM. They say, ”Sundown is at 9:00 PM and sunrise is at 6:00 AM, therefore MIDNIGHT is at 1:30 AM.” At the first Seder, we just started eating at 1:18 AM and fin- ished just in time. At the second, we started a bit earlier. It wasn’t because there was a Passover feast of food, but on both occasions, but, a Passover feast of ideas and questions and answers. Our children, Ezra and Adina, reminded us over and over again that the Seders were about learning and not about food. I disagreed, but lost. If I have a sad note about my time in Wickliffe, it is because some of the old clichés still seem to be in effect. Some of our orthodox co- religionist see all of Reform and Conservative as monolithic, as we see Orthodoxy. We both need to fully investigate each other to make better judgments, not to change movements, but for better knowledge of our peo- ple. This brings me to the second Seder. The second Seder was led by a Rabbi who is one of the emeritus Talmudic Rabbis at the Yeshiva. His Seder , in addition to my family, was attended by his 7 grandchildren ages 13 to 8 months. His Seder, while involving the children in a peripheral manner, was more like what I grew up in, when my grandfather would lead the Seder. Here there were only sporadic questions from the children to their grandfather, not the other way around.

“The more one tells about the outgoing from Egypt, the more one is to be praised”. (The Passover Haggadah) This Passover I was blessed to attend three Passover Seders. How do you handle conflict with others? Do you yell? Do you walk out? Is the person you have issues with, narcissistic? Is it that the only way is their way? Do egos get in the way? The key is focusing on the positive. Work on the conflict before it gets out of hand. Listen, don’t jump to conclusions. Go in with an open mind. Be respectful of differences. Focus on humility not ego. If you cannot handle a situation, ask a third party. It is not always what you say, it is rather how you say it. Your body language is also key. Are you rolling your eyes? Do you have eye contact? Do you cross your arms? These may be your demeanor. But if a person does not know you that well, it may come across as standoffish. Turn the negatives into positives. Make the hurt into a heal. Change scared feeling into the confident feeling. Don’t feel threatened. Be open to hear the truth. Praising others is the way to go instead of putting down. Be assertive but not aggressive. Focus on communications. Forgive and forget. Be honest. Separate the issue from the person. Hone in on the problem. We are all leaders in our own way. We should lead by example. Leaders do make mistakes. The difference is how they rectify the situation. How could I have handled this in another way? Look for solutions not the problems. The goal is to work for commonality in a peaceful way. B’Shalom Steve Abrams

TBE house of WORSHIP AND OF GATHERING

Here Rabbi Munk, the leader’s name, hid the Afikoman behind his back and dared the children to take it while he sat there. One of the granddaughters did and, truthfully, I never saw her touch it. Throughout the evening, Rabbi Munk went out of his way to learn about us and we learned about him. He is a Holocaust survivor who left Berlin, Germany as a child, after his father, one of the chief Rabbis of Berlin, narrowly escaped capture by the Gestapo. The present Rabbi Munk reminds me immensely of Rabbi Kramer, in knowledge, bearing and humor. The twinkle is in Rabbi Munk’s eyes, too. To Rabbi Munk’s great honor, at his Seder, he made us feel immensely comfortable. Not as students he taught the Seder, but as fellow journeyers out of Egypt. This is what we must all strive for at our Seders. And at our Seder we did just this. We went out of our way to make sure people were journeying with us. It did not matter if the person was four months old or 92 years of age. There was always someone there to help to make sure each of us felt calmed, nurtured and comfortable. It was that type of hamesh occasion. We were doing what our ancestors did on that first Passover. Families were eating together, talking to-gether, helping together and just being together. I heard and saw two young mothers comparing ideas about how to raise two very beautiful baby girls. I saw elders of the congregation sitting with newly met friends and with peo-ple that they have known for at least 30 years. All were conversing together over a myriad of subjects including Passover, matzo, horseradish, freedom and each other. Fran, Ira, Barbara Bolter, Barbara Lux-Smith, Shirley, Yvonne, Melissa, Margaret, Lisa and Steve all saw to it that we ate well too, something I missed at the Seders in Cleveland. But our Seder is unique, not only for the age spread of the attendees, but because of the great variety of people who came together to make Passover. At the Seder, I had just finished the part of Ha Lache Mah Anya, which says “let all who are hungry come in and make Passover”, when a young lady came through the door. This is what the order of the Seder is. You must go through all the steps of the Seder so your family, your clan and your people can feel loved, learned and alive. May we all pray for the liberation of all people, which can only come when all people seek to liberate each other and, further, are willing to do the things that will make such liberation possible? The giving of these three spiritual gifts from one to another is the highest form of Freedom, for you have made others feel free, too. To paraphrase the Zionist song, “Anu Banu Artza Levnot u’lhevanbot ba, (Let us build our Community (land) and therefore ourselves will be built up.” B’ahava, Rabbi Mark
