CONSTRUCTION
The ZF SERVOCOM power steeering systemaccomodates the control valve, power cylinder anda complete manual steering gear.
An engine-driven oil pump supplies the pressureoil for the steering gear.
The steering gear housing (A) - see Fig. 1, isdesigned as the cylinder for piston (B) whichconverts the rotation of the steering spindle (C)into na axial movement and transmits it to therocker shaft (F). The straight teeth of the rockershaft and piston as finished to a high surfacequality, so that it is only necessary to perform aone-time adjustment, free from backlash, by meansof the two eccentric housing covers (bearings).

The piston’s threaded bores is connected to theworm (D) via a row of balls. When the worm isrotated, the spiral groove transports the balls atthe end of the row to the other end, thus forming acontinuous row of balls.
The control valve consists of a rotary valve withsix control grooves on its periphery and the wormhead which also has six control grooves.
The rotary valve is connected to the steeringspindle and rotates together with the worm whenthe steering wheel is turned.
A torsion bar, pinned to the rotary valve and worm, holds the control valve in the neutral position aslong as no effort is applied to the steering wheel.
There is a recuperation valve (H) in the steeringgear housing through which oil can be taken fromthe return line if it is necessary to steer withoutpower assistance.
Furthermore, a pressure limiting valve (G) isinstalled to suit the type of steering system,, Itlimits the oil pump’s feed prssure to presetmaximum value.

FUNCIONAMENTO
OPERATION
When a turning mouvement is transmitted from thesteering spindle to the worm or vice versa, thetorsion bar (E) is deflected within its elastic ran-ge so that the rotary valve twists relative to theworm head, i.e control sleeve. This means that thecontrol grooves of the rotary valve are displacedfrom the neutral position and out of alignment withthe control grooves of the worm head.
When the steering wheel is released, the torsionbar returns the valve to the neutral position.
The valve and oil flow are shown in simplied formin figures 1 and 2 to make the drawings easier tounderstand. The drawings also show a crosssectional view of the valve to enable the connectionfrom the control valve to the cylinder spaces andthe function of the valve to be depictedschematically.

Pressure oil flows into the control sleeve’s center, annular groove. It is fed through threesymmetrically spaced, radial bores to the arc-shaped control grooves of the inner rotary valve.
The position of the control grooves in the rotaryvalve and worm head is such that pressure oil canflow through the inlet ports (J and K) into thearc-shaped axial grooves (N e O) of the worm headwhen the valve is in the neutral position.
From there, the oil can flow freely via radial boresto either end of the power cylinder. As long as thesteering valve is in the neutral position, oil canflow to both ends of the power cylinder as well asthe three return groove (P) in the rotary valve andfrom there to the oil reservoir.
When the steering wheel is turned clockwise, theright-hand threaded piston is displaced to theright. (Fig. 2).
As the mouvement of the piston is asisted bypressure oil, the oil must be fed to the left end ofthe cylinder.
The three control grooves of the rotary valve asdisplaced clockwise and the inlet ports (K) for oilfeed are opened wider.

Inlet ports (J) close and seal off the oil feed to thecontrol sleeves’ axial grooves (O).
When the valve is in the position described in Fig.2, the pressure oil flows through the inlet ports(K) into the axial grooves (N) of the worm headand is fed from there via the worm’s recirculatingball thread to the let cylinder. This ensures powerassistance pf the piston movement. The closed inletports (J) prevent oil returning to the reservoir.
Oil is forced out of the right end of the cylinder. Itflows via the open return ports (M) to the rotaryvalve’s retiurn grooves (P).
When the steering wheel is turned in the oppositedirection, the power cylinder’s piston moves to theleft and this movemnt is assisted bay pressure oilin the right cylinder . The control grooves of therotary valve are displaced anti-clockwise andallow oil to flow through the open inlet ports (J)to the axial grooves (O) and thus make the circuitto the right cylinder.
The oil flows out of the left cylinder via the worm’srecirculating ball thread and the open returnports(L) to the rotary valve’s return grooves (P).
The central oil bore in the rotary valve providesfree passage to the oil reservoir.

FUNCIONAMENTO E AJUSTE DASVÁLVULAS LIMITADORAS DE PRESSÃO(ESTERÇAMENTO)
1. Funcionamento
Fig. 4 - Movimento do êmbolo para a direita.
FUNCTION AND ADJUSTMENT OFHYDRAULIC STEERING LIMITER
1. Function
There two steering limit valves (T and U) withspring-loaded valve pistons on thelongitudinal axis of the piston (B).
The pushrods of the valves project beyondthe right and left piston faces.
The valve piston pushrods are actuated bythe adjusting screws (X and Y) located in thehousing and cylinder cover when the pistonis displaced to the right or left towards theend stop.
Both steering limit valves remain closed untilone of the pushrods butts against gtheadjustoing screws.
When the piston is moved, e.g. to the right(Fig. 4), the right steering limit valve (T) isactuated by the adjusting screw (X) beforethe piston’s end position is reached.
The valve piston (U) is displaced by pressureoil in the process which enables oil to flowfrom the power cylinder space (W) to thecylinder space (V) and into the return line.
The process is reversed when the pistonmoves to the left.
Fig. 4 - Piston movement to the right.Steering limit valve open.Oil pressure is greatly reduced.Once the steering limit valve is opened, the steering can be turned as far as thewheel stop, but with increased effort andgreatly reduced power assistance.

2. Regulagem da limitação hidráulica
2.1 Regulagem manual (Fig. 5)
2. Adjustment of hydraulic steering limiter
2.1 Manual adjustment (Fig. 5)
Initial adjustment of the hydraulic steeringlimiter is always performed at the factory onthe test bench in accordance with the vehiclemanufacturer’s drawings and specifications.
An additional adjustment is necessary afterinstallation of the steering system in the vehicle
It is both carried out with a pressure gaugeand mechanically.
2.2 Automatic Adjustment (Fig. 6)
The automatic valve consists of a conventionalvalve, but with screws and sliding bushessituated in the same places of the manualregulating screws.
During the first steering, the steering pistonabuts against the sliding bush, opens the valveand then displaces the sliding bush until itreaches the front shaft stop.
After installing the steering gear in the vehiclewith its wheels still on the floor, steer to theright and to the left until it abuts the front shaftstop previously adjusted.

MANUTENÇÃO E LUBRIFICANTES

MAINTENANCE AND LUBRICANTS
1. Inspection
All unions and pipework of the stering gear, locks, pumps, valves and power cylinders mustbe checked for leaks during routine servicingof the vehicle. If the steering has beenretoffited, the workshop which installed itshould carry out the above inspection after thefirst 1,000 kilometers.
2. Grade of oil
The use of a suitable hydraulic oil is essentialfor correct operation of the steering and pump.
The oil also lubricates the steering gear andpump, i.e. only one type of oil is required forthe whole system.
ATF fluids are recommended for the steeringgear, acc. to List of lubricants ZF –TE- ML.09.
3. Oil capacity
The power steering system is not filled withoil at the factory, The quantity of oil dependson the steering size and assembly procedure.
4. Filling with oil and Bleeding
4.1 Filling
Important:
Do not re-use oil which has been drained off.
Note:
When filling the steering system with oil makesure that the oil reservoir never gets completelyempty. Otherwise small air bubbles will appearin the steering system. We would also like toemphasize that when replenishing and bleedingthe system start the engine at low speed. A highengine speed or powerful suction would causesmall air bubbles to be sucked in to the pumpand these would be broken down intomicroscopic bubbles as they pass through thepump; this can result in froth and would makethe time required for bleeding unacceptablylong.
When filling the steering gear and pump re-move the oil reservoir cover and top it up.
VIDE I.S. NºSEE S.I. Nº
16
Afterwards, start the engine at low speed andthen let it run at idling speed to fill the entiresystem with oil. As the oil level in thereservoir drops rapidly during this processit is necessary to top it up constantly and thusavoid the pump sucking in air. We recommendthat one man starts the engine and a secondman replenishes the oil as it is drawn off bythe pump.
4.2 Bleeding
Once the steering system has been filled to apoint where the oil level does not drop belowthe uper mark on the dispstick , allow engineto run for a short while at low rpm (i ncaseof drive-independent pump: with gearengaged and drive axle jacked up).
This enables most of the air to be expelledfrom the cylinder spaces. Observe the oillevel during this process and add oilimmediately if the level drops. The bleedingprocess can be accelerated by turning thesteering wheel from lock to lock sevral timeswith the steering axle jacked up. Do not applyany more effort than necessary to turn thesteering wheel in its end positions.
Add oil as necesssary until level remainsconstant at the upper mark on the dipstickand no further air bubbles can be seen in thereservoir when the steeering wheel is turned.
4.3 Steering systems with automatic vent valves
Stering gears with automatic vent valves haveno bleed screw. These systems automaticallyexpel any air that is left in the housing afterthe above bleeding procedure.
Automatic vent valves do not operate underload. For this reason it is essential to avoidany unnecessary build up of pressure.
VIDE I.S. NºSEE S.I. Nº
Desligar o motor e retirar o eixo dianteiro doscavaletes.
17
4.4 Steering system with bleed screw
Remove the dust cap from the bleed screw.Open the bleed screw ½ -1 turn to allow air atthat part of the housing to escape.Close thebleed screw again as soon as bubble-free oilemerges from its bore. Then top up with oil.Turn the steering wheel again from lock to lockseveral times. If the above procedure has beenfollowed, the oil level in the reservoir must notrise more than about 1 or 2 cm – dependingon size of steering system – when the engine isswitched off.
Turn off engine and remove jack from steeringaxle and drive axle.
5. Checking oil level
The oil level control must be performedtogether with the engine oil level checking.
Checking oil level with engine running:
With the engine running and the steeringsystem heated, the oil must be between theupper and lower mark of the dipstick.Otherwise fill up the level with ATF.
When the engine is running the oil level dropsslightly because there are flow resistance andthe oil needs a pressure of 2 to 4 bar to flowthrough the steering gear. Also make sure thatthe oil level difference with the engine stoppeddoes not rise more than 20 mm. If it does, it isna indication that there is still air in the system.
6. Important:
If the system is losing oil, locate the leak andrectify it immediately.
7. Oil change
An oil change is recommend after the steeringgear or pump or both have been overhauledor replaced. The filters in the oil reservoir mustbe changed and the pipework cleaned at thesame time.
VIDE I.S. NºSEE S.I. Nº
8. Ruídos na Direção poderão surgir se:
a) O elemento de filtragem ou filtro estiversujo;
b) As conexões roscadas do lado de sucçãonão estiverem suficientemente apertadas(aspiração de ar);
c) Se houver insuficiência de óleo no siste-ma. Completar o óleo como descrito noitem 4.

8. Noises in the steering can occur for thefollowing reasons:
a) Dirty filter element.
b) Union at intakes side not porperlytightened, i.e. air is sucked in.
c) Insufficient oil in system. Top up as peritem 4.
9. Clearance in power steering when pump isstopped or running
During normal driving i.e. the oil pump isdelivering pressure oil, the torsion bar istwisted and the valve piston displaced whenthe steering wheel is turned or the vehicletravels over a bump. This causes the powerassistance to come on. Only a very sightmovement of the steering wheel or sectorshaft is necessary to trigger this process andthe driver immediately notices the powerassistance come into efffect.
The situation is different if the steering hasto be operated wiht the pump at a standstill,e.g. when the vehicle is towed. The steeringeffort is much higher and it is then necessaryto overcome the whole stroke of the controlvalve, as far as the stop, before the steeringwheel’s movement is transmitted to the sectorshaft. For this reason there is noticeableclearance at the steering wheel when thereis no power assistance.
10. Inspection
The inspection of the steeering system mustbe daily performed, by checking the oilreservoir level.
In case of fault in the steering pump assemblythe pump in question should be sent to theZF dealer which is equipped with test bench, original parts and trained personnel to carryout the necessary repair.
The ZF dealer network is capable to servicetheir customers promptly since it isstrategically placed in the whole country.
