Since being founded at the intersection of two railroads, growth in Atlanta
has been tied to transportation. Today, despite having over 80 local
and regional bus routes and 4 subway lines, there is no downtown hub
or transfer point, forcing passengers to wait on desolate sidewalks and
trudge through the city to make connections. Regional rail hasnt served
downtown since the 60s. A vast area of Atlantas downtown has become an
open pit of parking crossed over only by a few elevated roadways. Known
locally as The Gulch it is a physical and psychological barrier, isolating
neighborhoods, and hindering development.
The Georgia Multi-Modal Passenger Terminal (MMPT) weaves together three
essential threads of urban infrastructure - transportation, the public realm,
and private development to create an integrated nexus of connections
and a catalyst for growth. The project incorporates existing bus networkswith planned commuter rail, high-speed rail, and streetcar networks.
It knits together disconnected transit systems, cut-off neighborhoods,
and disjointed road and open space networks, to create development
opportunities and a vibrant, mixed-use, pedestrian-friendly district.
The main functions are stacked vertically: trains at the lowest level; streets,
plazas, and retail above this; buses above the street level; and a rooftop park
over the buses. The complexs many entrances lead to a light-filled, public
great room. A double-height skylit spine provides clear, legible pedestrian
circulation and transfers. Street retail energizes sidewalks, while above,
an undulating, diaphanous skin surrounds the bus level, offering dynamic
glimpses of bus movements, and allowing natural ventilation. The swooping
form creates an identity and celebrates the energy and excitement of travel.
The innovative elevated park uses transit infrastructures inherent scale
to connect existing open spaces and create a dramatic new Atlanta
destination. The project recognizes the importance of transit investments to
an environmentally and economically sustainable future, and moves beyond
Transit OrientedDevelopment toward Transit IntegratedDevelopment asthe model for sustainable growth.
