BIOGRAFIA

Os Pink Floyd são uma banda inglesa formada na cidade de Cambridge em

1965, inicialmente reconhecida pelo estilo psicodélico e experimental durante a

sua fase inicial e mais tarde pelos seus álbuns conceituais, letras filosóficas e

concertos extremamente elaborados, com combinações muito originais entre

som e imagem em todas as suas fases.

Um dos conjuntos de maior sucesso na história, a banda vendeu 200 milhões

de discos ao redor do mundo, obtendo o recorde de manter por mais tempo um

álbum (Dark Side of The Moon) no Top 200 da Billboard – 741 semanas

consecutivas, ou seja, mais de 14 anos.

Apesar do moderado sucesso nas rádios na fase inicial, os Pink Floyd eram uma

das bandas mais conhecidas e respeitadas no underground londrino, quando

realizavam shows memoráveis pela sua combinação de sons e luzes,

arquitectados pelo então líder Syd Barrett. Algum tempo depois do lançamento

do primeiro álbum, The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, de 1967, o

comportamento imprevisível de Barrett, agravado pelo seu uso abusivo de

drogas, forçou o seu posterior desligamento. Durante algum tempo ele ainda

permaneceu na banda de forma apagada, compondo apenas uma música do

disco A Saucerful of Secrets (1968). Barrett, que sofria de diabetes, teve a sua

situação médica agravada lentamente ao longo dos anos, o que culminou em

sua morte por cancro em 2006.

O próximo disco – já sem a presença de Syd – More, de 1969, trilha sonora

para o filme homónimo, contava com David Gilmour já como guitarrista e

vocalista principal em todas as faixas.

Durante algum tempo a banda permaneceu sem rumo certo em função da

perda do líder e principal letrista. Discos experimentais e longas músicas

instrumentais são exemplos dessa época: Ummagumma, álbum duplo de

1969, Atom Heart Mother (1970) e Meddle (1971). Antes do seu disco de maior

sucesso, Dark Side of The Moon (1973), a banda ainda lançou em

1972 Obscured by Clouds, outra trilha sonora e um dos discos mais singulares

do Pink Floyd.

Foi com Dark Side que a banda se tornou mundialmente conhecida e atingiu

grande nível de popularidade. O disco, aclamado pelo público e pela crítica,

tematizava sobre diversos problemas que afligem o homem moderno, como o

dinheiro, a loucura, a morte e a apatia, dentre outros. Esse sucesso intensificou

a influência do baixista Roger Waters, que criou os conceitos de todos os

demais álbuns dessa época.

São eles: Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), The Wall (1979) e Final

Cut (1983). O primeiro trata basicamente sobre a ausência – tanto a de Syd

quanto a dos membros à época, em parte desmotivados por terem alcançado

tanto sucesso com o disco anterior. Há também severas críticas à indústria

fonográfica em geral, exemplo de Welcome to the Machine e Have a Cigar.

Animals, não tão bem recebido pela crítica quando do seu lançamento, é uma

adaptação do clássico de George Orwell, A Revolução dos Bichos. Apesar disso,

o disco é provavelmente o auge técnico dos integrantes e possui muito boa

avaliação entre os fãs.

Com o próximo disco – The Wall – que muitos concordam ser o ponto alto de

Waters como compositor, a banda novamente alcança o topo das paradas da

Billboard, vendendo mais de 11 milhões de cópias, o que o torna o disco duplo

mais vendido de todos os tempos. Complexo e bastante autobiográfico, o disco

tem como ponto chave o processo de isolamento causado por traumas sofridos

ao longo da vida.

Um deles, a morte do pai na 2ª Guerra Mundial, é mais bem trabalhado no

último disco sob a liderança do baixista: Final Cut, que também contém críticas

à política bélica britânica, comandada na época por Margaret Thatcher.

Waters, que alegava sérias divergências com os demais membros da banda,

declarou o fim da banda em 1985. Insatisfeitos com o desfecho da situação,

David Gilmour, juntamente com o baterista Nick Mason brigaram na justiça com

Waters, ganhando o direito de continuar usando o nome Pink Floyd mesmo sem

a presença do ex-líder.

Após isso foram lançados 2 álbuns sob liderança do guitarrista: A Momentary

Lapse of Reason, de 1987, com fortes influências da década de 80 (e que ainda

não continha a presença de Wright), e The Division Bell, de 1994, com diversas

letras co-escritas pela mulher de Gilmour, Polly Samson.

Em 2 de julho de 2005 e pela primeira vez em 24 anos, a formação mais

clássica do Pink Floyd voltou a tocar, para a sua maior plateia, no Festival Live

8, em Londres. Em 15 de Setembro de 2008 morre o teclista Richard Wright,

pondo um fim no sonho de um possível retorno da formação clássica do Pink

Floyd.
