AN EXPERIENCE OF THE EXCESS

During my study period there was no “Queima das Fitas”. In fact, times were different. This took place in the mid-dle of the revolution, although it had meanwhile been brought under control by the constitutional order, the explo-sion of radical choices was not extinct yet.

Our memory more than ever could be called future memory: it had no substance, its material was what does not yet exist and what it is not.

Past, present and future linked by a double mystery link, two almost contradictory forces, that possibly make up the most important aspect of the revolutionary situation: The linearity of the historical optimism (especially those with ideas on the left more inclined for Marxism) but at the same time a type of immanence of the presence of the whole past and future; a present totally open, a germinating present, the end and the beginning, space and time, unique because the past totally compatible with the future.

Then curiously, (I say today), the “Queima das Fitas” was a thing of the past: not just for political reasons (but also because of it) because it was an event fitting with the past, maybe even better, it was a past event without future.

Then, it reappeared. Slowly it became a fixture in other academic years close to me. During that period I found an-other decline of the joy, the intensity of the ritual, the uniqueness of a city and a university. Our continued militancy for the tradition dating from 1969 had no distractions: nothing had been omitted from the repulsive Praxis or the

feeling of its anachronism, not to say ridiculous, the rituals lost over a period of history maintaining each other in-tact, favouring the symbolic aspect, which implies, the temporality as a mystery to which the existence is subject, reorganising therefore our framework of intelligibility.

An ostensive affirmation of the elite becoming almost a popular festivity while at the same time becoming a visible expression of the university exposing itself to the city and the world. This event is simultaneously able to arouse in-terest, for the anthropological aspect (due to its complex ancestral culture), the sociological aspect (by bringing to-gether struggle and festivity) and the aesthetic-cultural aspect (due to the almost music festival aspect and the vis-ual and sound aspect of the event). It is the periodic resurrection of a community, of a common experience: bodies, voices, chants, sounds, cries, and drunkenness of the excess, where the whole common experience is unpredict-able and is termed to be excessive.

The ancient tradition forever!

The “Queima das Fitas” of Coimbra dates back to the 19th Century, namely to the year 1899. In that year the stu-dents from Coimbra, in a replica of what would be the centenary festivities between 1880 and 1888, decided to com-memorate the Centenary of the “Sebenta” study notebook. But these commemorations were motivated by a satirical approach, based on the study notes and the exploitation of the “sebenteiros”, (the students) A alegoric parade and a “sarau” or musical entertainment in the evening, were organised.

In the subsequent years, the 4th year law students, in the same spirit, organized similar events to the “Sebenta” cen-tenary. They introduced the innovation of “Queima das Fitas”, burning of the ribbons or course colours that they used in the briefcases, as semi-finalist students who aimed to finish their course the following year. Today that tradition is still maintained by finishing the course the following year. Today this tradition is maintained with the burning of the “gre-lo” the ribbon a few hours before the parade of the semi-finalists.

This brings us to 1905 and the “funeral do grau” (funeral of the degree). This celebration resulted from the abolition of the Bachelor diploma. These festivities had some participation from city of Coimbra, anticipating what would lat-er be called the “Queima das Fitas”.

There were some historic developments like the constitution of the first Republic, the 1st World War, that were respon-sible for some interruptions, but in 1919 the festivities took the structure that they still have today. For the first time the name “Queima das Fitas” is suggested, a festival celebrated by the 5th years from all Faculties.

As from this year a new cycle emerges: The festival becomes established and new events alongside the already es-tablished ones emerge.

The first edition of the “Garraiada” (bullfight) was done in the academic year 1929/30. “The bullfight represents the various ancestral traditions of the community with the student reality, integrating in a concrete manner the rituals. A magic moment where Man and Animal face each other and is a simulation of myths, which are an overview of a cer-tain cultural matrix.”

Presently the bullfight takes place at the Coliseum of Figueira da Foz.

The solidarity aspect of the “Queima das Fitas”, whose commitment has been increased by the organisation commit-tees, began in 1932 with the first event of the “Venda da Pasta” (sale of the briefcases). This was the sale of small rep-licas of the Academic Briefcase to raise funds for the “Asilo da Infância Desvalida” a childrens home. Today this home is called “Casa de Infância Doutor Elysio de Moura”, and this sale is still part of the event. Students fill the streets of Coimbra together with the girls of the said institution, providing a different activity for a day. The day ends with the “Verbena”, which is an afternoon party with appropriate entertainment for the participants.

The following year the first Ball of the Faculties is held. An event to introduce the students to the society of Coimbra.

Meanwhile the fame of the “ Queima” grows beyond the borders, but the academic crises of 1969 and the academic mourning, caused a break of eleven years of the “ Queima das Fitas”. Over the next few years there were some at-tempts to make it happen in spite of the mourning, but without great ceremony. Not even after the revolution of the 25th of April did the event take place, there were some radical opinions about this issue within the Academy.

In 1979 the Executive Board of the “Associação Académica de Coimbra” (Academic Association) decided to go ahead with the academic festivities. This event stimulated in 1980 the return of the “Queima das Fitas”, and since then till now it has grown reaching the climax of the academic spirit and the Coimbra Academy.

In the present moulds the week of the Nights at the Park (concerts) begin at the square of the Largo da Sé Velha with the “Serenata Monumental” (Serenade), where groups of “fado” of the “Fado” department of the AAC sing. The events I mentioned earlier continue to take place increasingly earning more fans.

I only need to refer in detail the other five events of unique importance, which are: the parade, the “Sarau” (evening musical event) the Tea time dance, the Recital of the “fitados” (Graduates) the “Récita dos Fitados” (Recital of satirical verses by the finalists and the Blessing of the Briefcases.

The parade of the “Grelados” is one of the oldest tradition of these festivities, dating back to the “Notebook Cente-nary. The parade with the allegorical floats duly decorated, carrying the 4th year students in a spirit of gratitude to the city for their years of study. This parade also has a spirit of satire shown in the various floats.

The “Sarau” (musical entertainment) is a true cultural show of all the departments and organisations of the Associa-ção Academica of Coimbra. These “saraus” were the beginning of what later turned into the “Queima das Fitas”.

The tea time dance is the destruction of the decorations by the finalists. This activity follows the five o’clock tea in the English tradition of tea and cake the dance then follows. The Recital of the finalists shows the artistic, dramatic and satirical spirit of the students. The well-known ballad of 5th year law students of 1988/89 was written to be read at the Recital. Finally the blessing of the Briefcases, shows the religious aspect of the festivities. This is a ceremony presided by the Bishop of Coimbra, blessing the Briefcases with their Ribbons of all the students “fitados”. Presently the ceremony takes place at the “Sé Nova”, but initially it was done at the chapel in the University of Coimbra.

The introduction of the Treaty of Bologna at the University of Coimbra has lead to changes in the setting dates for the traditional events of the “Queima”, because it is necessary to ensure that all traditions are kept for those students who just graduate and do not go on to Master’s. This battle is still going. It should be taken into account that the “Queima das Fitas” of Coimbra is the biggest and most ancient student fes-tivity in the country. Its grandeur and importance involves people from the whole country and even from foreign coun-tries. I even dare say that it is a unique event in the world. But it is important to know that the “Queima das Fitas” is not merely the Nights at the Park and the traditional events. There is a variety of cultural and sports activities, both be-fore and after the week of the “Queima das Fitas” that liven up the city for about three months, reflecting the two ma-jor banners of the AAC which are culture and Sport. For all it has been, and all that it is and will be, the “Queima das Fitas” of Coimbra will always be unique, and will al-ways mean tradition, the ancient old tradition that will always remain.

2008, The best “Queima” ever!

The “Queima das Fitas” of Coimbra is one of the oldest and biggest academic festivals in the country. It involves not only all the student community but also lots of people from all over the country, who come to Coimbra to take part in these festivities such as in the concerts, cultural or sports activities that are part of this event or for all the tradition and mystique that it involves. It should be noted that the “Queima das Fitas” of Coimbra is an event of national and international interest.

This event personifies the spirit and tradition that characterizes this city. It is a unique event a landmark in the Coimbra stu-dent life but also on a national level. It involves a variety of traditional events, as well as cultural and sports activities. The “ Queima das Fitas”, a festivity with centuries of tradition, is the greatest academic festival in the country characterised by a very specific spirit that spreads to everyone.

The 2008 “Queima das Fitas” brought life to the city of Coimbra, not just during the week of Nights at the Park concerts, but also at many more activities over a period of time.

This “Queima” had the best motto ever “The age-old tradition, in a different Queima”. This “Queima” was the best ever in terms of controversy, scope, innovation, challenges and problems. The latter were unique and no other organising commit-tee had ever encountered.

This “Queima das Fitas” had to show events that were polemic, controversial and traditional resulting in the discontentment of the academy and the search for alternatives. It was also the “Queima das Fitas” that will be known for the change in the logos, mascot and range of events and innovation shown over the four months that the “Queima das Fitas” was advertised as well as the park adventure and even the secondary stage.

Many activities took place, starting with the “Queima do Colete” (burning the waist coat) There were also activities such as,

Acting of various choirs, classic Guitar recitals, Harp Recital, the International “Queima das Fitas” Regatta, a rugby tour-nament, swimming competition, traditional games, surf trip, amongst many others making it a great success on all levels.

The “Queima das Fitas” animates the city of Coimbra, together with other national and city entities, such as the University of Coimbra, City Hall, the Chamber of Commerce, the Civil Government, and the Parliament, amongst others.

It is also important to note the charitable aspect of the “Queima das Fitas” raising funds for the needy. In a period when in-creasingly the young people seem not to care about the needy, the “Queima das Fitas” plays a role in encouraging social care for all and a spirit of solidarity with the most needy.

Organizing the “Queima das Fitas” was undoubtedly one of the most enriching experiences, of which everyone in the organ-izing committee is very proud. We hope that similar policies will not only be maintained but possibly improved and pro-mote the Coimbra “Queima das Fitas” as the biggest and best academic festival in the country.

This particular “Queima das Fitas” had the task of organising traditional innovative and controversial events, which gave rise to voices of discontentment within the academy.

In the organising committee, we considered the various points of view, however it was not up to us to change to a new mod-el, but actually do our best with the model that was “imposed” on us.

We believe and are confident that the “Queima das Fitas” will be maintained and improved as an age old festival, pioneer and leader in the academic tradition and “praxe”, organized by a committee elected from the final year students of the eight faculties of the University of Coimbra. Once again it is proved that with responsibility, dedication, commitment, effort, profes-sionalism and honesty, a good management never forgetting its originating customs, it is possible to be on par with the pro-fessionals, meeting the objectives set beyond positive result.

The “Queima” is for the city is the greatest source of entertainment as the biggest event in the city, the district and one of the biggest nationally and internationally. It is a festivity organized by the students mainly for the students, but increasingly it has become a festivity for the city, the region and the country.

We look at the “Queima das Fitas” and the “fado” of Coimbra as the Great icons of the city.

We believe that the AAC (Academic Association of Coimbra) as the most eclectic club in our country offering a wide range of Sporting practices, cultural and civic events, playing a fundamental role in the city of Coimbra.

It is with pride that the “Queima das Fitas” with its earnings sponsors and promotes the practice of sports, cultural and civ-ic events for the Coimbra population.

All the earnings are more than just an investment in the AAC, it is an investment in the quality of life of the city of Coimbra. At a time when it is so difficult for Coimbra to compete with other large Portuguese or European cities, offering Cultural, Sport-ing and Civic activities made possible by the AAC with the support and financed by the “Queima das Fitas”. This fact plays an important role in promoting the settling of people in the city of the students.

The activities of the “Queima das Fitas 2008” were a great attraction, both in cultural, sporting or traditional events, as well as the increased attendance at the Nights by the Park concerts.

“Times change and so do the wills”, as written by our colleague Camões in one of his sonnets. Dates are changed but Tra-ditions remain. This conviction led us to accept a new model of what is and will always be the age-old “ Queima das Fit-as” of Coimbra.

We all came to Coimbra a few years ago and found a city full of tradition. We were “caloiros” (freshmen) and from then on

we followed the long route complete our studies. We wore the academic outfit for the first time in the first serenade of the “Queima das Fitas”. We had the “grelo”(sprout) (ribbon with colours of the faculty) and then the “ nabo” (turnip) in the last “ Latada” parade. We now look at our black briefcase and what do we see, the ribbons with the course colours. The ribbons where those most dear to us and were part of our academic life, will leave a message.

Who has not ever shed a tear at the serenade to the sound of the chords of the Coimbra guitar? Who has not felt the ex-citement of the parade? Who of us has not felt the climax of the academic spirit at the “Queima das Fitas”? I am sure very few or even none.

And now the time to say good-bye approaches and we ask: Was it worth? Yes it was. Being a student in Coimbra is to be part of the reality of this city, the student city. It is living this unique tradition. It is adorning the streets with the black capes in the wind. Permitting this nostalgia to be our life giving blood.

We will always have the image of the ancient hill, crowned by the “ Cabra” (clock tower) and watered by the crystal waters of the Mondego River. This hill keeps all the secrets of the city and of each one of us.

In 2008 the same tradition was maintained, in a different “Queima”.

The best ever!!

Nuno Pais

Memories of an Ex-Commissioner

The day I decided to be a Commissioner of the Queima das Fitas 2008 has long passed. I was aware of what to expect over the next long six months. I was full of enthusiasm, but at the same time scared, because of the responsibility to or-ganise one of the biggest academic festivals in the world. Would I be able to? Did I have the competencies? What would be the outcome? These questions crossed my mind all the time. In spite of this, I faced the challenge.

I presented my candidature and anxiously prepared the Election Day. It was necessary to convince the semi finalists (gre-lados) students of my faculty to dress in their academic outfit,” capa e batina”, to be able to vote on me. Election day came and I met those that could be my future colleagues in the central committee. In that year we were almost all independent candidates. Only two candidates representing their faculties were competing for a place in the central committee. A new adventure started that day, when I met the other seven members that I still call friends today.

The long months of work began. First we had to assign the various duties to the eight committee members, (The Chair, Treasury, Parade and bullfight ( Cortejo e Garraiada), Culture, Sport, Balls, Production and Infra-Structures). My respon-sibility (a personal choice) was the parade ( Cortejo e Garraiada). I would be responsible for almost all traditional events of the Queima das Fitas. I must say it was a Great honour to find myself organizing a “ Serenata” (serenade), a “Cortejo” (parade), the “Venda da Pasta” (sale of the briefcase), the “Garraiada” (bullfight), the “Bênção das Pastas” (Blessing of the briefcases)… They were all important events of the Queima das Fitas.

I remember also the meetings held with various Coimbra and national entities. The one that touched me most was the one at the Parliament ( Assembleia da República). I was invited to organise for them a serenade of the “Fado de Coimbra”

Seria eu capaz? Estaria à altura? Qual seria o resultado? Eram tudo questões que me surgiam a toda a hora.

the day before the 25th of April celebrations. I witnessed how those members of the AR who studied or were from Coim-bra brought nostalgic memories back.

Quickly the week of the Nights at Park (concerts) dawned on, involving the greater part of my duties; those long months I mentioned were in fact far too short. At each event although it had been well prepared there was always something else to do; I must confess I had a lot of worries and concerns.

The week of the park concerts also went very quickly, it was with Great sadness and some tears that the eight commis-sioners said goodbye to the most important week of the Queima das Fitas, with the sound of the Portuguese guitar in the background and the eyes fixed on the Mondego River reflecting the colours of the fireworks.

Today, a year and half later, thinking back on that fantastic year, again I ask the same questions I did at the beginning of this text: can I do it? Yes I did it! Did I have the competencies? Yes I did! and what would the result be? More than the eco-nomic result, was those 25 people that made and their respective assistants who made this Queima one of the best ever. A Queima we came to called “A Queima da Amizade” the friendship Queima!

I was a commissioner, and if I am asked if it was worth all the effort dedication and giving up lots of things, my answer is: Yes it was worth it and I would be a commissioner again, for the love of this 110 year old tradition and for all my colleagues.

To all the members of the COQF 2008 (organising committee), Thank you very much!

Gonçalo Ribeiro

Commissioner of the parade and bull fight “Cortejo e Garraiada” COQF 2008

Fui capaz! Estaria a altura? Estive! Qual seria o resultado?
