RIOHá um século, o Rio de Janeiro ainda era a capital do Brasil, o bondinho do Pão de Açúcar tinha ape-nas três anos de idade e a bossa nova não existia nem como ideia. Respiros dessa velha cidade continuam vivos em alguns endereços escondidos pelos seus cantos mais ancestrais. Foi com a missão de en-contrá-los que desembarcamos na capital fluminense e mergulhamos em um universo de casarões antigos, ruas de paralelepípe-dos e muito bate-perna. O resultado está nas próximas páginas: um delicioso guia para passar um fim de semana na Cidade Maravilhosa de cem anos atrás.A century ago, Rio de Janeiro was still the capital of Brazil, the cable car to the Sugarloaf Mountain was just three years old and bossa nova didn’t exist, not even as an idea. Vestiges of this old city remain alive at some addresses hidden in its more ancestral corners. We ar-rived in Rio with the mission of finding them and we dove into a world of old mansions, cobblestone streets and lots of on-foot explo-ration. The result can be seen in the following pages: a delightful guide for spending a week-end in the Marvelous City of 100 years ago.

Uma portinha discreta na Rua Sete de Setembro abriga a mais anti-ga confeitaria da cidade. A Cavé foi fundada por um imigrante francês em 1860, apenas seis meses após o Brasil se transformar em repúbli-ca. O edifício original, em estilo art nouveau, acaba de ser reinaugura-do depois de uma extensa reforma. A história do local está na simplici-dade dos detalhes: ambiente discre-to, clientela tranquila e uma mesa de chá com jeito (e gosto) de caseira dão o tom das antigas.

Só uma quadra separa o Gabinete do primeiro teatro do Rio de Janei-ro, inaugurado em 1813 sob o nome Real Theatro de São João. Um his-tórico triste, marcado por três in-cêndios e uma ex-administração desinteressada, fez com que o edi-fício atual não preservasse nada de sua arquitetura, já que foi recons-truído do zero na década de 1970. No entanto, um pequeno museu nos fundos revela uma trajetória que acompanha a tradição artísti-ca do país. O espaço foi palco, por exemplo, da primeira ópera brasi-leira apresentada em português (A Noite de São João, de José de Alen-car) e da estreia teatral de Bibi Fer-reira, com apenas 24 dias de vida.

A discreet door on Rua Sete de Setembro leads to the oldest con-fectionery in the city. Cavé was opened by a French immigrant in 1860, just six months after Brazil was transformed into a republic. The original Art Nouveau-style building was just reopened after a thorough renovation. The history of the locale can be seen in the sim-plicity of the details: modest décor, a peaceful clientele and a tea table with home style (and flavor) set the old-fashioned tone.

Only one block separates the Gabinete and the first theater in Rio de Janeiro, inaugurated in 1813 with the name Real Theatro de São João. An unfortunate history, marked by three fires and a dis-interested administration, made it so that the current building retains nothing of its original architecture, reconstructed from scratch in the 1970s. Still, there’s a small museum in the back which recounts the his-tory of artistic tradition in Brazil. It was the venue, for instance, for the first Brazilian opera performed in Portuguese (A Noite de São João, by José de Alencar) and the theater debut of Bibi Ferreira, who was just 24 days old.

An enormous candelabrum hangs from the ceiling, illuminating the reading room in this, the first library in Rio de Janeiro, founded in 1837. It’s home to around 350,000 works, including some extremely rare copies, like a first edition of Os Lusíadas, by Camões, which dates from 1572.

Mosteiro de São Bento

Criado em 1590 por monges beneditinos, é um dos principais exemplos de arquitetura colonial na cidade. Suas estruturas passa-ram por incrementações ao lon-go dos séculos 17, 18 e 19. Por dentro, o prédio é ainda mais exu-berante, completamente forrado com talha dourada. Aos domin-gos, um espetáculo à parte: a mis-sa das 10 horas é celebrada com órgão e canto gregoriano.

SÃO BENTO MONASTERY • Founded in 1590 by Benedictine monks, it’s one of the main examples of colonial architecture in the city. Its cur-rent facilities underwent expansions in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. On the inside, the building is even lavisher, entirely covered in gilded wood. On Sundays, it has an addi-tional spectacle: a 10 a.m. mass which is celebrated with an organ and Gregorian chants.

Pedir o salsichão com salada de batatas é mais do que conselho, é quase obrigação. A tradição do Luiz vem de 1887, quando ainda se chamava Zum Schlauch e era comandado por um filho de imi-grantes suíços. No interior, o clima é de absoluta decadência — o que só acrescenta charme.

“Order the sausage with potato salad” is more than just a tip, it’s mandatory. The tradition at Luiz stretches back to 1887, when it was called Zum Schlauch and run by the son of Swiss immigrants. In- side, the décor is absolutely dingy — which only adds to the charm.

As estantes e o relógio são os mesmos desde sempre. O menu também tem décadas de aniversário — o clássico sanduíche triplo leva provolone, presunto e ovo, ingredientes que podem ser substituídos por quaisquer dos embutidos à venda. Hoje um movimentado point para almoço, tem a data de inauguração como um mistério. “Sabemos que ela já estava aqui em 1906, mas ninguém nunca descobriu quando começou”, explica Seu Ricardo, um dos sócios.

The shelves and the clock there are the same as ever. The menu also has decades of history — the classic triple sandwich is made with provolone, ham and egg, ingredients which can be substituted for any of the cold cuts sold there. The house gets busy every day at lunchtime, and the date of its inauguration remains a mystery. “We know that it was here in 1906, but no one knows exactly when it opened,” explains Ricardo, one of the owners.

O edifício tem a mesma arquitetura desde sua fundação, em 1894, com pé-direito altíssimo, espelhos emol-durados com jacarandá e azule-jos portugueses. O traje social não é mais obrigatório, mas a atmosfe-ra de elegância de outrora conti-nua viva — especialmente na me-mória do funcionário mais antigo da casa, Seu Orlando, que há 63 anos serve as mesas da Colombo. No seu repertório infinito de casos estão as visitas mais ilustres (para ci-tar algumas, Getúlio Vargas, Ma-dame Satã, Sophia Loren e a rainha Elizabeth), assim como hábitos de seus desconhecidos favoritos. “Tem o Sr. Olivier, que vem almoçar todo dia há 60 anos.” Atualmente, mais de mil doces e salgados saem dia-riamente — isso na baixa tempora-da. O pastel de nata, em especial, é para comer de joelhos.

The building has retained the same architecture since it first opened in 1894, with high ceilings, mirrors framed in jacaranda wood and Por-tuguese tiles. Dress clothes are no longer obligatory, but the elegance of the old-fashioned atmosphere re-mains alive — especially in the memory of the house’s oldest employee, Or-lando, who has been waiting tables at the Colombo for the past 63 years. He tells stories of the establishment’s most illustrious visitors — Getúlio Var-gas, Madame Satã, Sophia Loren and Queen Elizabeth, just to name a few —, as well as the habits of his lesser known favorite regulars. “There’s Mr. Olivier, who’s been coming here for lunch every day for 60 years.” Currently, they sell over 1,000 pastries and salty snacks each day — during low tourism season. The pastel de nata is one pas-try that’s to die for.

Casa DarosUma mistura de passado e presen-te, o espaço cultural dedicado a ar-tistas da América Latina foi aber-to no Rio em 2012 em um casarão neoclássico do século 19. O con-traste não poderia ser maior: a gran-deza arquitetônica se choca com as obras da atual exposição, Made in Brasil, de artistas brasileiros como Vik Muniz e Waltercio Caldas. O térreo é ocupado pelo restaurante Mira!, cujo menu é sempre inspirado nas mostras do momento.

A combination of the past and present, this cultural space dedicated to Latin American artists opened in Rio in 2012 in a 19th-century Neoclassical mansion. The contrast couldn’t be any starker: the architectural grandeur clashes with works on display at the current exhibition, Made in Brasil, featuring Brazilian artists like Vik Muniz and Waltercio Caldas. The ground floor is home to the restaurant Mira!, whose menu is always inspired by the exhibits.

SUGARLOAF MOUNTAIN • The first great postcard image of Rio de

Janeiro absolutely must be included in your itinerary. One of the most visited tourist attractions in the city, the cable car up to the top turned 100 in 2012.

Of course, the suspended cars are different, and the observation decks

are now filled with touristy shops and restaurants, but the view is still

Nova CapelaEis um restaurante quase invisível — a porta de madeira no meio pas-saria batido não fosse a plaquinha que diz “Tradicional desde 1903”. O bolinho de bacalhau, sequinho, é a abertura perfeita para qualquer refeição — seguido, é claro, da es-pecialidade da casa, o cabrito as-sado com arroz de brócolis. Apesar da história antiga, o ambiente que hoje abriga o bar e restaurante é de 1966. O original queimou em um incêndio alguns anos antes.

This restaurant is almost invisible — the wooden door in the middle would go completely unnoticed if not for the sign that reads “Tradicio-nal desde 1903” (Traditional since 1903). The crispy codfish dumpling is the perfect starter — followed by the house specialty, roast goat with broccoli rice. Despite all the history, the setting that currently houses the bar and restaurant dates from 1966. The original was destroyed in a fire a few years before.

Atravessando um dos caminho mais camuflados dos Arcos da Lapa chega-se a um mundinho paralelo chamado Santa Teresa. As ladeiras são sinuosas, marcadas pelos tri-lhos do antigo bonde (que está em fase de testes para voltar). Um lugar em que os vizinhos se conhecem pelo nome e o levam pela mão se precisar — foi assim que fomos pa-rar no terraço do Claudio, baiano que nos convidou a subir para ver as casas de um ângulo perfeito.

Crossing one of the most camou-flaged paths on the Carioca Aque-duct, you come to a parallel world known as Santa Teresa. The hills are winding, marked by the tracks of the old streetcar (which is returning in a phase of tests). A place where neigh-bors know each other by name and will lead you by hand if need be — this is how we ended up on the terrace owned by Claudio, a Bahia native who invited us in to get a view of the houses from the perfect angle.

É um dos passeios mais bem guarda-dos do Rio. Ficam no local as ruínas do antigo Palacete Murtinho Nobre (erguido no início do século), onde morou Laurinda Santos Lobo, me-cenas carioca famosa por suas festas com grandes artistas e intelectuais do Modernismo. Uma renovação misturou os elementos da belle épo-que a uma arquitetura de tijolos apa-rentes, vidro e metal. Dá para chegar até o quinto andar e admirar a vista.

One of the most highly anticipated ac-tivities in Rio is a visit to the ruins of the old Palacete Murtinho Nobre (erected in the early 20th century), once home to Laurinda Santos Lobo, a patron of the arts famous for throwing parties with great modernist artists and intellectuals of the day. A later renovation combined elements from the belle époque with exposed brick, glass and metal archi-tectural features. You can go up to the fifth floor to check out the view.
