An oil train derailment bythe Columbia River hasbrought into clearer focusan issue the tribes have beenwarning about for years.

“It was not a matter ofif, but when,” said WarmSprings Tribal Council

Tribal response to oil transport spillChairman Austin Greene.“It’s been a disaster waitingto happen.”

Chairman Greene earlierthis week visited the sitewhere the train derailmenthappened, at Mosier on theColumbia. A volatile type of

oi, Bakken, spilled from carsthat went off the rails. Thissparked a fire, and oil thatseeped into the Mosier watersystem, threatening the Co-lumbia. This is an obviousthreat to the tribes’ treaty fish-ing rights at the river.

The Confederated Tribesfor three years now have beensaying a spill such, or worse,is inevitable. Other rivertribes also voiced their con-cern about the on-going prob-lem of oil and coal transportby rail along the river.

The Oregon Sports PlayIt Forward Award this yeargoes to Gavin Begay ofWarm Springs. Gavin is thesecond individual to receivethis award, the first beingMarcus Mariota in 2015.

bers, having a will is recom-mended for anyone over 18.

And this is especially rec-ommended for people whohave ownership interest inland: If you die without awill, the American Indian Pro-bate Reform Act will deter-mine who will receive yourtrust land.

Services available this sum-mer include writing a new will,or changing an existing one.The new or changed willwould be drafted so as to

comply with tribal, state andfederal law.

You need a will if:· You are over 18;· You have, or may ac-

quire, trust land, non-trustland, or personal property;

· You have children orstep-children under 18;

· You want to leave prop-erty to someone who is notin your immediate, bloodfamily;

· You want to leave incomefrom an interest to a non-In-dian spouse.

· You want to stop furtherfractionation of your land

If you die without a will,the American Indian Pro-bate Reform Act will deter-mine who will receive yourtrust land, but with a willyou have many more options.

Climate change is real and,unfortunately, the effects appearto be in motion. We are witness-ing changes in the seasons. Ourroots and berries must be gath-ered sooner, and salmon returnsare less predictable. Our peoplenotice less snow in the mountainsnow, and there is less cool waterduring the summer when it wasonce abundant. The changes wesee may not bode well for ourfuture. Over the years to come,we may lose natural resourcesthat are important to our cul-ture and our heritage. Some ofthese losses may be irreversible.

I have learned manythings about WarmSprings, such as traditions,cultures, elders, season forroots-luuksh, Bitterroot-piaxii, wild carrots-sakwi’itand huckleberries-winwanu. I learned this atwork through my co-workers with whom I amrelated: the Smiths, theKalamas, the Martinezes.I met a lot of my familyfor the first time and wasamazed at how many thereare.

Since I have been com-ing to Warm Springs since

Hello, my name isDevynn Rodriguez. I’m19 years old, and I amfrom Warm Springs. I wasraised by two of the bestpeople our communityhas to offer, my grandpar-ents Bob and KimMedina. However, if youtruly knew me you’d un-derstand that they are myparents.

I have lived in WarmSprings my whole life,learning the many traitsour culture has to offer. Ihave great teachers andadvisors, elders, who I’velearned our ways from.

Not being a tribalmember has restricted mefrom all the things othershave done that couldhave been life changinglike jobs, housing and out-door traditions.

I do understand thepart I would rather have,of knowing where we’recoming from to under-stand both the people sideand the political side. Butbecause my enrollmenthas been pending since Iwas a baby, Pending stilldoesn’t make you a mem-ber.

As much as I’d lovemy son to grow up insuch a beautiful place ashis mother, unfortunatelyI’m unable to do so, be-cause I’m not a tribalmember and I’m not ableto have a home under myname.

I have many tribal

member family that arehere today and some thatare gone such as mymother Terri Philpot,grandmother KimberlyMedina, great grand-mother Billy Joe Bagley,great great grandmotherGertrude Bagley, and mygreat uncle Alfred Bagley.

I love the outdoors,hunting, fishing, berrypicking, camping. I’d loveto be able to do thosethings on my own, with-out having to wait to seeif someone is willing totake me. Instead of hav-ing my grandma with meto gather, I’d like to ableto go out on my own andgather things for my fam-ily. Not only do I not havethe privilege of suchthings, but so do others,so I ask please vote Yesto All.

Laki Aiden Jones is mygreat grandson, and I feelit is important for me towrite in behalf of him tobecome a tribal member.

He is descendant toOits Johnson, Paiuteleader of the 78 Paiuteswho returned to theWarm Springs Reserva-tion in 1878. Oits wasmarried to SarahJohnson, and they had ason, Mark Johnson, whomarried Sallie Johnson.Mark fathered four chil-dren, Una, Addie, Orinand Luella. Una wouldhave been Laki’s great-great-great grandmother.Una Johnson and JohnnieTewee had a son,Raymond Johnson Sr.Raymond Johnson Sr.,Paiute Chief, would havebeen Laki’s great-greatgrandfather. Raymond(Tape) Johnson marriedRosanna Charley and hadseveral children, one be-ing me, Myra Johnson-Orange. I had children,one being SandraJohnson-Perez, now mar-ried to Isidro Perez.Their daughter, AlainaJohnson Jones is nowmarried to Isaac Jones,and are the parents toLaki.

Laki was born at Ma-dras and has been resid-ing within the boundariesof Warm Springs sincebirth. I have taken thetime to raise my grand-

children, knowing whothey are and where theycome from. My grand-children, who now willinclude Lake, are taughtand exposed to the threecultures and languages ofour reservation.

Laki is one-eighthWarm Springs blood,Paiute, Sahaptin, Colville,Yakama and Umatilla. Ibelieve that it is very veryimportant that Laki learnhis heritage and where heis from, so that he will beidentified as a WarmSprings tribal member.He will learn much ofthat by belonging to aplace and being groundedand stable in his personallife. So please submit hisname for adoption. As allcan see, Laki will haveopen opportunity to learnhis bloodline, languagesand traditions of theWarm Springs Reserva-tion. Respectfully submit-ted,

Myra Johnson-Or-ange.

We are submittingour son Laki Aiden Jonesfor adoption into theConfederated Tribes. I,Alaina Johnson-Jones,tribal member, have re-sided on the reservationall my life.

It is important to usand to Laki to belong tothis tribe, as we all needto belong and obligateourselves to a place. Webelieve Laki has oppor-

tunities to learn his lan-guages and traditions thatwill strengthen his heri-tage, therefore openinghis opportunities to giveback to the tribe when hegrows to adulthood.

We appreciate your at-tention and considerationregarding the future ofour son, Laki Aiden Jones.

With respect, AlainaJ o h n s o n - J o n e s ,mother.

Adoption into the Con-federated Tribes of warmSprings would be a greatprivilege to me. It has al-ways been my hope toone day obtain tribalmembership status so thatI can become a fully rec-ognized member of theWarm Springs tribe.Membership will allow meto become a fully Nativemember of the tribe.Membership will also al-low me to strengthen my

link with my heritage asmy family has always en-couraged me to maintain,as well as foster, my bondwith the ConfederatedTribes of Warm Springs.

By obtaining member-ship status with WarmSprings, I would strive topromote the cultural, so-cial and economic wellbeing of the WarmSprings people and theircommunity.

I want to be adoptedbecause I feel like I be-long already. My dad’swhole side of the familyhas some tribe they belongto, connecting them backto their ancestors for gen-erations. I, however, amnot a member and feel cutoff from my ancestorslike they all are acceptedand good enough and I amnot. When I meet newpeople and they ask mewhat I am and I tell themNative, they always followup with what tribe. I feelhomeless and awkwardnot being able to say withcomplete certainty this is

my tribe because techni-cally I am not a member.

Being adopted inwould mean acceptanceto me, connecting me for-ever to a tribe and mypast.
