St. Teresa of Avila Parish Mission Statement

We of St. Teresa of Avila Parish have been called together by God as a worshipping community. Embracing the traditions of our Catholic Faith, we are challenged to teach Gospel Truths and to serve our neighbors. We seek to recognize Christ in each person, and together be a sign of His presence in the world. Through prayer and guidance of the Holy Spirit and through collective use of our individual gifts, we strive to reach out lovingly to others, share our Catholic values, and build the kingdom of God in our time and place.

May 29, 2020

April 28, 2020 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Yesterday, 27 April 2020, Governor Mike DeWine presented a strategy to begin a multi-phased plan, even while the executive “Stay at Home Order” remains in place. His plan begins a process for Ohioans gradually to return to work and daily activity and provides hope and evidence that our cooperation with the governor’s orders has significantly curbed the spread of the virus. We thank you for and admire the patience, coop-eration and understanding you have already shown during this COVID-19 pandemic. We realize the frustration, sadness, and loss the faithful felt not to be able to gather personally to celebrate the Paschal Myster-ies during the Sacred Triduum and each Sunday. During this time of sacrifice and longing, we have joined our prayers and hearts to yours, trusting that God will see us through this pandemic and reunite us at the Eucharistic Feast. Out of deep concern for the common good as well as the physical and spiritual well-being of all the people of Ohio, the Catho-lic Bishops of Ohio have agreed once again to cooperate with the gover-nor, and to support and abide by the multi-phased approach to return-ing to work and eventual public gathering in large groups. To that end, the Catholic Bishops of Ohio extend the temporary suspen-sion of all publicly celebrated Masses/liturgies ending on May 29th, with the hope of publicly celebrating together the Solemnity of Pente-cost on the weekend of May 30/31. Each of the bishops of Ohio, once again, dispense the Catholic faithful who reside in their respective dio-ceses and all other Catholics currently in their territories from the obli-gation of attending Sunday Mass during this time. We ask for the coop-eration and adherence of all the faithful to the governor’s directives during this period. We will be working diligently with our pastoral teams to consider rea-sonable, gradual and responsible initiatives for welcoming back the faithful in time to Sunday Mass, initiatives which will renew our love for the Holy Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and which will help us to restore Catholic life and invite others to share that life after the pandemic. We encourage individual dioceses and their respective pastors and parishioners to begin to work to establish plans which respect social distancing and other requirements for the safety of our people. This decision has not been taken lightly and, as your bishops, together with you, we recognize the sacrifice we are called to make being physi-cally distanced from the Holy Eucharist and from one another. We re-main grateful for your understanding and prayerful support. As your bishops we continue to encourage you to keep holy the Lord’s Day by participating in Sunday Mass by way of radio broadcast or televised or live-streamed options and making a spiritual communion. Keeping in mind of the gift of plenary indulgences offered to us by the Church, we encourage all the faithful to turn to the Church’s treasury of prayer, praying as a family or individually the Liturgy of the Hours, rosary, divine mercy chaplet, and Stations of the Cross, etc. Together we continue to pray for all who are suffering from Covid19, for all health care workers and first responders, for all the deceased and their families, and for an easing of the anxiety and tension caused by this pandemic. Relying on the Motherly care of Our Lady, Health of the Sick, we unite our sufferings to those of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and we trust in the glorious hope of His Resurrection. Your father in Christ, Most Reverend Dennis M. Schnurr and the Catholic Bishops of Ohio

St. Teresa Stewardship

Although we are not able to come together and celebrate Mass at

this time your stewardship is so very important to support the

church and school year round. During this time that we are

asked to stay home and put all fundraising events on hold

your assistance is needed all the more. Online payment

options are now available for your weekly or monthly contribu-

tions. Knowing that many are struggling with job loss or reduced

wages, we understand that this may be a difficult time for you.

We hope, if you are able, that you will continue your support of

our parish. You can mail checks, drop off your envelope in the

parish office mailbox, or go online to our website at

www.stteresa-avila.org and click on the “GIVING” button to con-

tribute by PayPal or credit card. Remember to include your en-

velope number with any contribution made without your enve-

lope so it can be included in your end of year statement. ACH/

Automatic Giving is also available for those who would like to

have your stewardship contribution automatically deducted by

week or month year round. There is no cost to you and you can

change or stop at any time. This does save the parish money on

envelopes and you do not have to write checks or remember to

bring envelopes to Mass. Please contact the parish office if you

would like more information on ACH payments - the form is also

available on the donation page of our website. Thank you to all

those who have been dropping off or mailing donations to the

church. Your support is so greatly appreciated more than you

know.

The Deacon’s Corner

A reflection for this week “Jesus told his followers, “He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself,

take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gos-pel will save it.” - from the Gospel of Mark 8:34-35

One of the things that always intrigued me when I read the sto-ries of the lives of some of the saints were the accounts of some of them battling satanic forces. Companions of these saints have told stories of hearing fighting and screaming in a saint’s room when no one else was there. In reflecting on this during the isola-tion caused by the pandemic, I really believe that Satan picks his time and place to attack our weaknesses when we are most vul-nerable. He sees people isolated, anxious, and fearful of the pan-demic. He creeps in for the subtle attack. It shows up as self-doubt, or maybe anger at other people, or loss of faith, or some sinful tendency that we struggle with. In our isolation, he has all the time in the world to assert his presence. During this time and most times, we have crosses to bear. But they are our crosses. Don’t let the devil take them away, because if he does take them, he wins, we lose. In Mark’s Gospel, as well as Luke’s, Jesus is peaking to his disci-ples about what it takes to be his follower. Taking up a cross in his time would have meant literally being willing to die for what they believed. The crucifixion of Jesus had not happened yet, but they would have understood the level of conviction required to be his follower. In our time, our crosses may take many forms, from witnessing our faith in God no matter what challenge we face, to bearing whatever hardships with faith and trust and without much complaining,. We tend to forget about the chal-lenges that Satan can throw our way when times are good. But when times are tough, when we are isolated with our own thoughts, we can see much clearer both the negatives and the temptations that come from the evil one. We still have our cross that we can share with the Cross of Jesus. Don’t surrender your cross to the evil one. A prayer: Lord God, thank you for giving us the salvation of the Cross of Jesus. Help us in our isolation to see that Satan is prowling in the world to break us down. Help us to resist the evil one through our prayers and by clinging to the Holy Cross. We ask this in the Holy Name of Jesus, Amen. ~Deacon Dave Steinwert

Hello everyone, we all know that athletics have been turned upside down due to social distancing. There are currently no plans, however, to delay the fall soccer season. Practices are currently set

to begin August 1st. Registration for the fall season is open online now. There will be no in person signups, but if you require a pa-per signup, or are unable to register online currently, please con-tact Mike Roberts (513-403-7565) or Crystal McGrath (513-508-3633).

Please do not wait to register. Registrations will close on May 1st. There is no cost to you and you can change or stop at any time. This does save the parish money on envelopes and you do not have to write checks or remember to bring envelopes to Mass. Please contact the parish office if you would like more information on ACH payments - the form is also available on the donation page of our website. Your support is so greatly appreci-ated more than you know.

2020 First Communion Update With the suspension of public Masses through Sunday, May 3rd, we are forced to postpone First Communion at both parishes this year. Parents have been communicated with via email. If you did not receive the

information please contact Maria Williams at [email protected]. Thank you for your understanding. We ask that you join us in prayer for all First Communicants this year, that they will be strengthened by their desire to receive Jesus.

Sacraments 2021 To all parents of 7th, and 8th grade students: Confirmation will be held at St. Teresa on Wednesday, February 3, 2021, Bishop Binzer will be presiding. Any students of either St. Teresa or St. William Parish that attend pub-lic school, entering 7th and 8th grade during the 2020-2021 school year, who were not previously enrolled in the Parish School of Religion (PSR) are asked to contact Maria Williams at 921-9200 for more information. Additionally, to parents of children entering 2nd grade next year that are not enrolled at St. Teresa or St. William schools are also asked to call Maria Williams regarding preparation for First Recon-ciliation and First Eucharist through the PSR program. First Communion is planned for April 10, 2021 at St. William and May 2, 2021 at St. Teresa of Avila.

We are planning an informational meeting for anyone interested in becoming Catholic through preparation in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults program. You may call

These days and for so many rea-sons like never before, more fami-lies in Cincinnati's neighborhoods are struggling with life's essentials for the first time ever. If economic predictions from the pandemic

are accurate, there will be a lot more people in need very soon, and our St. Vincent de Paul councils will need your help to be prepared for them. Please consider a donation to help a neighbor in need. Thank you in advance for your kindness—the poor are always so very grateful.

Parish Schools: As our teachers and students work hard to teach and learn from home our office staff is also working to register each new and returning student and process pa-perwork for EdChoice, EdChoice Expansion, and Jon Peterson Scholarships.

Please be prompt in returning appro-priate paperwork so as not to miss any deadlines. If you have any questions, please contact the school office or send an email for a faster response. We appreciate your understanding.

WE CAN’T WAIT TO BE BACK AT BINGO!

The Lenten series that was planned for the

month of March, “The Mass” with Bishop Barron

had to be postponed. We sincerely hope that

when new dates are announced that you will be

drawn to attend. If you would like more infor-

mation please contact Dcn. George Bruce at

[email protected].

The series description: Walk through the Liturgy with Bishop Barron and be transformed through insights on this most privi-leged and intimate encounter with our Lord Jesus Christ. See how the Mass brings us out of the fallen world and into the heavenly realm, how it resonates with a call from God and a response from his people, the Church, and, most importantly, how we are intimately joined with the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus through the Holy Eucharist. The Mass will help you understand how to fully, consciously, and actively partici-pate in the source and summit of the Christian life. Bishop Robert Barron is the founder of Word on Fire Catholic Minis-tries and Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. He is also the host of CATHOLICISM, a groundbreaking, award-winning documentary about the Catholic Faith, which aired on public television.

PRAYER TO MAKE A “SPIRITUAL COMMUNION” Saint Alphonsus Liguori

Saint Thomas Aquinas defined “spiritual communion” as “an ar-dent desire to receive Jesus in the Holy Sacrament and a loving embrace as though we have already received Him. Saint Teresa of Avila wrote: “When you cannot receive Communion and can-not attend Mass, you can make a spiritual communion, which is a most beneficial practice; by it the love of God will be greatly impressed on you.”

An Act of Spiritual Communion My Jesus,

I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things,

And I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,

Come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit

me to be separated from You. Amen
