Dear 4-H Families,

The name of the game in 4-H for the next few months is Communication and the Arts. As leaders,

members, parents and even staff . . . we all have responsibilities to communicate in one way or

another. And, when we are communicating, there are three very important elements of

communication that make it truly effective.

The first of these involves our HEAD; you have to know about something in order to talk about it. Don’t

get me wrong, I am familiar with plenty of people who know very little about any given topic and still

choose to discuss it at length. But in a world where credibility can take one a long way, genuine

knowledge or experience is vital.

Secondly, you have to have HEART. Emotional investment, or what some call passion, only makes a

speaker more credible and helps the listener engage in the words coming out of one’s mouth. People

who really care about what it is they are talking about are simply better communicators than those

who feel lukewarm about everything. In my opinion, this element gets to the heart of why leaders in

the 4-H Program are the best.

In addition, we should always ask ourselves if our communication is HEALTHY. Are we communicating in

a way that is emotionally safe for others? Are we choosing the right words, time, place and audience

to deliver our message to? It only does more harm than good when any of these safety elements is

misused.

Finally, an effective communicator will use their HANDS (and their feet, and body, and their faces) to

communicate a message that goes beyond words. Some call this walking the talk. They will not only

teach and lead others by their words but by their actions.

As you prepare for upcoming 4-H communication arts opportunities, whether it’s a speech or

demonstration or leading a club or project meeting, remember these three elements and ask yourself;

am I using the four H’s of effective communication? If not, where can I make the best better?

Many Blessings to You and Yours,

Sarah, Linda, Victoria, Tammy & Ann February 2016

GENERAL INFORMATION

ROOM RESERVATIONS AT UWS

4-H is heating up (even if the rest of the state is frigid) and that means that there are many, many

opportunities taking place on any given night. We are doing our best to accommodate project, club and

other countywide meetings here at UW-Extension as well as being good neighbors to other UWS and UWEX

programs. Please make sure you read your meeting notices carefully. As rooms at UWEX fill up we spread to

other spaces here on campus. When participating in rooms like 2223, 2114 (The Wombat Room) or 1202, your

closest parking option is near the Acuity Technology Center Entrance, which is the main entrance on

campus. Rooms that your groups have grown accustomed to using may be changed depending on all of

the reservations we have to accommodate. We apologize for any inconvenience but are confident that the

great work that happens during these opportunities will not be hindered by the space that you are using,

and in many cases the environment will be improved. JUST A REMINDER TO BE GOOD STEWARDS OF THIS

SPACE! Clean up after your group, if you need a vacuum please let us know, be quite in the halls and

respectful of students and teachers.

SNOW/ICE & 4-H MEETINGS

Another winter has arrived and maybe with it the snow and ice! We don’t want anyone to be stuck out in

the cold, so there may be times when it is advisable to cancel county level 4-H meetings. The Extension

Office has a Meeting Information Line to keep you updated on any meeting cancellations due to weather!

By calling 459-5908 you will hear a recorded message in regards to the latest meeting cancellations or you

can check out our website at http://sheboygan.uwex.edu/ . Please note: If classes are cancelled at UW

Sheboygan, 4-H night meetings will also be cancelled.

ATTENTION!! Project Leaders and Committee Chairs…if you are planning on canceling a meeting, please

call the Extension Office by 3:00 p.m. Our staff will best be able to support you by sending out an e-mail to

project members, updating the Meeting Information Line and the website, if called by 3:00 p.m. Thank you!

Our policy is safety first!

4-H GRANT PROGRAM

Thanks to the generous donations from the Kohler Foundation the Sheboygan County 4-H Grant Program is

ready for you! The Grant Program will provide partial funding for 4-H members to attend Base or Outpost

Camp, State 4-H Conference, as well as, other out of county and state trips and experiences. The

Sheboygan County Grant Program provides financial sponsorship for 4-H members from limited resource

families or families experiencing financial hardship. Grant awards will be based on the needs identified

through a confidential grant application process. To apply for a grant complete the application form found

at http://sheboygan.uwex.edu/grant-applications/

LIABILITY INSURANCE

Sheboygan County has a liability insurance policy for volunteers. Leaders are automatically covered under

this policy if they are registered as a Certified 4-H Volunteer Leader and have completed Youth Protection

Training. This policy is a backup policy for personal liability coverage; it is provided by Sheboygan County to

protect volunteers from damages. As a 4-H Leader, it is important to reduce liability risks as much as possible.

Be sure to provide safety instruction in all risk situations and take precautions to assure safe activities.

Please call Sarah at 459-5903 to verify liability insurance coverage for activities that could be considered “out

of the ordinary” and might increase risk. This insurance is not accident insurance. The 4-H Leaders

Association has purchased accident insurance for all of our certified volunteer leaders and members and

can be purchased for specific events to supplement health insurance.

2016 4-H INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE OPPORTUNITIES

4-H International host opportunities for 2016

Experience a different country without ever leaving your home! Enhance your cross-cultural awareness and

understanding! Help to develop the world’s most valuable resource: its young people.

Share your American culture and life by providing a welcoming home to a new friend from another country.

It is a wonderful opportunity to expand your horizons, learn about another culture and develop lifelong

friendships without even leaving your home! You can get involved in this wonderful opportunity to know and

appreciate another person and their culture by applying to host for a month or a year. Requirements include

having a genuine interest, being flexible and willing to spend time with the student, and having an extra bed

available (not necessarily an extra room). Previous hosting experience is not required. Financial costs to hosts

are basically meals and minimal travel since visitors want to experience American culture, not just tour or

travel.

Host an International Teen this Summer!

In the summer of 2016, more than 70 youth from Costa Rica, Finland, Japan, Mexico, and South Korea, will

spend a month living with Wisconsin host families and learning about American culture. If you are between

10-18 years old and want to take part in a month that will stay with you for a lifetime, apply now. Chaperone

hosts are also needed for two week periods during these time frames.

Call for 2016-17 High School Exchange Host Applications

If you have enjoyed a short term hosting experience or simply love working with students from other cultures,

consider hosting a Eurasian student through the C.S.I.E.T. approved 4-H Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) High

School Programs or a student from Japan, Mexico, or South Korea; all are coordinated by States 4-H

International Exchange Programs in collaboration with state 4-H programs around the country. Students

arrive in August and depart in June. A host brother or sister of high school age is not a prerequisite and young

or retired couples involved as 4-H leaders are also urged to apply.

Applications are due by February 15 or till all delegates are assigned. Hurry, since assignments will begin in

late February!

For additional information and applications check out Wisconsin 4-H International Programs website at

4-H YOUTH ASSOCIATION TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 16 AT 7:30 P.M.

Pizza Ranch, Oostburg

The Youth Leaders’ Association is busy, busy, busy planning some great 4-H activities and events. If you’re in

7th grade or older, you can still join in the fun. From Movie and Pizza Night and Younger Member Night to an

Older Youth Lock-In and community service…plans are under way for some super, spectacular events and

we would love your ideas and input. The next Youth Leaders Association Meeting is Tuesday, February 16th

at 7:30 p.m. We will be finalizing plans for the Movie and Pizza Night! Don’t be shy and don’t miss out on the

fun…get involved by helping plan and be a part of a GREAT group!

NEW 4-H VOLUNTEER LEADER ORIENTATION

Remember that all NEW 4-H Leaders must attend a New 4-H Volunteer Leader Orientation in order to be

certified as Sheboygan County 4-H Leaders. All new 4-H Leaders, as well as those who missed the orientation

last year and still desire to be certified 4-H Leaders, should mark their calendars for the upcoming workshop

sessions.*Tuesday, February 23 – 6-8 p.m.

Contact Victoria at the UW-Extension Office at 459-5903 or fill out the form at the back of this month's CRIER

to register. Registration is due at least one week prior to the workshop. If you cannot attend these sessions,

but still desire to be a Certified 4-H Leader, please contact Linda at the Extension Office to make other

arrangements.

WHAT IS EXPECTED OF 4-H PROJECT LEADERS?

* First, make sure you’re an enrolled 4-H Leader or enrolled as a Youth Leader!

* Get started now! Member enthusiasm for a project is highest at the time of enrollment. Find out who

is enrolled in the project and set up your meetings.

* Help members keep a record of what they did or made in the project during the year.

* Review progress toward the year's goals at your final meeting of the year.

* Organize and conduct at least three to six project meetings per year. Remember project tours and

individual sessions can be offered to members in addition to group meetings.

* Involve youth leaders in meaningful ways. They are capable of helping in planning and teaching--not

just being the helper or the clean up crew!

* Set an example in being prepared, organized, and flexible in working with youth.

4-H CLUB SECRETARIES

Just a friendly reminder that you should be sending your monthly minutes to the Extension Office. Having 33

your club. You can e-mail them or drop them off at the Extension Office. If you e-mail them,

please send them to Linda at [email protected] or Victoria at

[email protected]. Thanks to those clubs who have been current with

their minutes this fall! Keep up the great work…we enjoy reading what your clubs are up to!

This family friendly event is open to ALL families in Sheboygan County free of charge. Make sure to invite your

family and friends to come and watch the day’s productions! Even if you or your clubs are not participating

in one of the productions, we would like to invite you to spend all or part of the day engaged in a SUPER arts

event. This is a fun and free day that anyone can come and watch! The youth and adult volunteers spend

many hours putting these plays/dramas and musicals together. Come and support them!

4-H ART BEAT! This event created for 4-H members in grades 3-5 and their parents and leaders, is the introductory program

for Wisconsin 4-H Arts and Communication! ArtBeat! will be held March 18 and 19, 2016, at our State 4-H

Camp, Upham Woods in the Wisconsin Dells. The weekend will feature a look at a variety of arts projects

including music, drama, visual arts, and more! 4-H members will explore their own creativity while discovering

the great variety of 4-H Arts & Communication experiences available to them now and in the near future.

Session leaders will be 4-H older youth, adult leaders and 4-H staff members with a wealth of experience to

share. Youth and adult participants will rotate through a variety of sessions which are hands-on and active

and held at various sites throughout camp. Both youth and adult participants stay in the warm and cozy

heated cabins! Camp begins Friday evening at 7:00 pm and ends Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm.

The $50.00 fee will include all materials and supplies, (including a very cool ArtBeat! backpack!) special

snacks, overnight lodging and breakfast and lunch on Saturday. Why not get a whole carload of youth and

adults together from your county for some genuine 4-H bonding time?

Come join the excitement of this opportunity available to some of our youngest (and often most

enthusiastic!) 4-H members!

Register early! This camp fills up fast! Registration Deadline: February 19, 2016. Go here for additional

information: http://fyi.uwex.edu/wi4harts/artbeat/ For more information contact Christina Rencontre, 4-H Youth

Development Communication Arts Specialist, (608) 262-1536, [email protected] .

COMMUNICATIONS ARTS FESTIVAL NEEDS YOUR HELP! Watch for a date in April 2016 for the Communication Arts Festival! Come spend a day learning and enjoying

the efforts of a multitude of young people. Explore the many ways of communicating --- demonstrations,

speeches, creative writing, drawing and painting, photography and more. Ribbons and prizes will be given

out that day. Watch for the registration form to come on line.

For the past few years, the Communication Arts Festival has had just a few parents and youth working with

the 4-H Youth Development Program Coordinator, but we need more help to make it a successful event.

Last year, the Communication Arts Festival was moved to April to allow youth participants more time to

prepare as the Music and Drama Fest and Project Day usually occur in February and March. The event is

open to all 4-H youth (including Cloverbuds) interested in the arts. Project categories include posters,

photography, drawing, talks and demonstrations, and creative writing. The deadline for entering is usually a

month before the event. On the day of the event, youth will give their talks and demonstrations. Those

entering the other categories will meet with judges who will review their creative submissions. This is a great

way for our youth to become more comfortable having their projects judged and to receive valuable

feedback on their work. The youth must be present at the festival in order to have their work judged. The

creative writing entries are judged before the festival due to the time involved in reading and critiquing.

I look forward to building a strong Communications Arts Festival committee for 2016.

Thank you, Kelly Rauch, Sheb. Co. Leaders Association Executive Board, [email protected]

is open to UW Extension staff, school staff member that currently work with Upham Woods, and 4-H
