i’m thankful to my family for the patience during my absence from home while i was wandering through the world in my search for undersea images; to the nature for being so prodigal of beautiful and exotic creatures, even being often beaten by man; to Cultura Sub Publisher for the opportunity of showing through this book that there is still much worthy of preservation, and there is still time.

Throughout my 25 years of diving experience, 15 of them as an instructor of the activity, i always sought my personal fulfillment in the undersea images, whether they were still or motion pictures immortalized on video. During this search, in which the main focus was the documental and artistic record of marine creatures in their own habitat, my natural path was to obtain as much information as i could about my “models” thru both, literature research and observation, of their habits and behaviors, during my dives. Thus, in each encounter with these animals and plants i tried to compensate the absence of theory with the excess of practice; i tried to make up for my “no training” in biology with deep dives into the books and the water. as a result, i have gathered images, knowledge, and an increasing wish of scrutinizing all of it from my own point of view, my own perception of this hidden territory.

This book is the realization of a dream: sharing with the readers, pieces of the wonderful world that stretches under the surface of the oceans; presenting a little knowledge about the true owners of that huge, beautiful, and distressed house. it is the marine life, exposed from the point of view of a diver, image hunter, and above all, a sea lover.

Before i started diving to take pictures, i already had a strong connection with the sea. among several aquatic sports that i was practicing, i really enjoyed free diving, not only to snorkel, but also to collect fish and invertebrates for experimental marine tanks that i had at home, with all the

There, in the wild blue, under the waters, I saw a world a few people in the world have the opportunity to see. A world of colors, silence, discoveries. A cradle of life.

Comecei a pensar à frente.

Bastou a conclusão do curso.

difficulties of a time when Brazil did not have neither accessories nor specific chemical products to maintain these mini ecosystems. it was a time when the ecologic awareness was just crawling. earth seemed to be an inexhaustible source of resources, or at least, this was how people wanted to see it. i used to exchange experiences with other aquarium lovers about how to collect seawater, how to prepare it to receive the fish. We used to discuss about what creatures could survive well in these artificial environments, in which we, men, were playing with nature. Some experiences were well succeeded, others were not. By doing this, i felt closer to the sea, more connected to it, even at the expense of some marine creatures, which i now find worse than incorrect. Photography was nothing but a hobby, a passion taken seriously, practiced with dedication off the water, and, from time to time, when snorkeling with an amphibious camera to shot some images.

everything changed back in 1986 with my basic scuba diving training. i was motivated by friends, and moved by curiosity. i joined the school group without believing that riding thru the bottom of the sea, with heavy and uncomfortable equipment, would be something good. happy illusion.

in my first encounter with the equipment, still in the swimming pool, my opinion already changed. i started thinking further. huge possibilities of photographing marine life unfolded before my eyes. it was the chance to reach depths before unimaginable, once the bottom time in a free diving was very limited. i admit that i also saw there, in the intimacy of the oceans, the opportunity of capturing new fish for my tanks.

however, i learnt life-transforming lessons, which also transformed my relationship with the sea. all i needed was the conclusion of the training. The sea was the same. What had changed was the way i looked at that blue wilderness. The fish that i before needed agility to try capturing, in silent fractions of seconds under the waters, were there, more accessible, more available, showing themselves in the marine lull. Then, the reward was time. The rush was on the outside. it was possible to stop, observe, study their behaviors, and get inspired. and, under the effect of such beauty, a question came to my mind: why plucking them out of their home, taking them to my house, and caging them in an environment difficult to control chemically and physically?

My target was to learn from them, analyze them, and respect them in their natural habitat.

That was the end of the salty water tanks at home. it was a new beginning. The fish were released, and the tanks donated. i started seeing the sea as a giant aquarium, where not only the sceneries, but also the creatures always held surprises. Since then, the sea also became my home. Surrounded by its waters i found myself.

Beneath a moving bed, protected from our eyes, there is a new world. a sanctuary of life. Deep and transparent. Generous and infinite. Mysterious and fertile. earth would not be the blue planet without the ocean. it embraces continents, soaks and enriches countries, unites and separates peoples. Century after century, it carries much more than water and beauty on its waves. on the back and forth of its tides, it carries food, news, progress, travelers, and artists. War and peace. it is a witness going thru time. Connoisseur of the earth long before the vast lands.

The sea is the origin of life, and life has written about it legends that seem to resist the passage of time. for humanity, it has been fear, challenge, road, and possibility. it has been the beginning and the end. Since the dawn of history, it fascinates man. it is inspiration for painters

and musicians, verse for poets, energy for engineers. it is survival for fishermen and answer to scientists.

it has been so close and yet so far, an environment leaning over the sands of the beach within the reach of the hand, and yet it is mysterious in its immensity. Seamen have crossed their waters for millennia and yet there are unexplored areas in the oceans. a world apart, source of many legends passed from generation to generation. even with the advent of scientific research, the sea seemed to be an insurmountable barrier. for many civilizations, it was where the world ended. it was fertile ground for monsters capable of sinking ships, enchanting mermaids who lured sailors and caused their ships to sink.

Profun-

do e transparente. Generoso e infinito. Guerra e paz.

oceans are the last frontier of the planet. a multitude

of lives still unknown to man, hidden under a veil of

waters. nowadays, their secrets were somewhat unfolded

by researches, books, and photographs throughout the

world. it was not always so. until a few years ago, no

Brazilian television station was specialized in wildlife.

underwater images were rare; curiosities presented, once

in a while, by programs on the free to air channels. Some

movies have tried to portray the sea as backdrop and

as main star, such as Spielberg’s “Jaws”, which exposed

the fish as the villain and generated revenge on the

world’s seas; or even the movie “The Deep”, a classic, in

which the french actress Jacqueline Bisset dives in the

Caribbean with nick nolte, in search of a treasure. in this

marine saga a giant moray devours the villain in the end

just when he is about to kill the hero. facing its paths,

plunging into its womb is not easy.

Since the great voyages, the idea that the oceans

are an endless source of resources persists even today,

coherent with their gigantic sizes and proportions.

The impression that the seas are renewed repeatedly,

leaded the fishing and hunting of mammals such as

the whales and seals, for a long time. The desperate

cry of these cowardly slaughtered animals echoed

around the world, exactly like those of the sharks

caught at industrial speed. Without realizing it,

man’s actions in trying to capture the largest animals

of the marine fauna directly affect creatures much

smaller and hidden by the layer of water covering the

oceans’ beds. Tiny, but equally important beings.

28

filme “O fundo do Mar” (The Deep), clássico no qual

a atriz francesa Jacqueline Bisset mergulha no Cari-

Po-
