One of the things that made an incredible impression on me in the fil'm was Frida's comfort in and celebration of her own unique beauty. She didn't try to fit into conventional ideas or images about womanhood or what makes someone or something beautiful. lnstead, she fully inhabited her own unique gifts, not particularly caring what other people thought. She was magnetic and beautiful in her own right. She painted for years, not to be a commercial success or to be discovered, but to express her own inner pain, joy, family, lave and culture. She absolutely and resolutely was who she was. The trueness of her own unique vision and her ability to stand firmly in her own truth was what made her successful in the end.

After prison blaze kills hundreds in Honduras, UN warns on overcrowding

15 February 2012

A United Nations human rights official today called on Latin American countries to tackle the problem of prison overcrowding in the wake of an overnight fire at a jail in Honduras that killed hundreds of inmates. More than 300 prisoners are reported to have died in the blaze at the prison, located north of the capital, Tegucigalpa, with dozens of others still missing and presumed dead. Antonio Maldonado, human rights adviser for the UN system in Honduras, told UN Radio today that overcrowding may have contributed to the death toll. “But we have to wait until a thorough investigation is conducted so we can reach a precise cause,” he said. “But of course there is a problem of overcrowding in the prison system, not only in this country, but also in many other prisons in Latin America.”

increase in the last 12 months of children turning up in class hungry having had no breakfast, a survey reveals. The study, entitled Lost Education, attempts to evaluate the damage to learning and concludes that in the worse cases pupils could be missing out on eight weeks of their primary school life due to regular hunger.[2] The report was commissioned by the food company Kellogg's, which also sets up breakfast clubs. It claims that 2.4 pupils in each class turn up for school at least once a week without having had breakfast, so are unable to concentrate. This puts increased demand on teachers' time.[3] Primary and secondary teachers report that if children arrive at school hungry they will typically lose one hour of learning time that day due to loss of concentration.[4] If a child arrived at school hungry once a week over a school year that would add up to 36 hours of learning time – rising to 8.4 weeks, or 70% of one school term for pupils aged five to 11 over their entire primary school life.[5] Teachers say that the impact of hunger on lost learning hours increases as children reach secondary school.[6] Hungry children are also said to be more lethargic and find it difficult to learn, and 26% of teachers have reported seeing children fall asleep in the classroom through lack of food or drink.[7] These effects can have a knock-on effect on other children, says the survey, which questioned 762 teachers and was weighted to reflect the national school population.[8] The presence of hungry children in the classroom, 55% of teachers said, has a negative impact on the learning of their peers, creating a lost education for many pupils across the UK.[9] Last year a separate survey by Kellogg's revealed that a sixth of teachers admitted to spending up to £25 a month buying bread, fruit and snacks to feed pupils who attend school without first having eaten breakfast. Pete

Mountstephen, chairman of the National Primary Head teachers Association, said: "It's a shocking fact that children in our classrooms across the country are missing out on the very foundations of their education by not being fed in the morning."

In 1928, Tarsila do Amaral painted Abaporu, a landmark work of Brazilian Modernism, in which a nude figure, half-human and half-animal, looks down at his massive, swollen foot, several times the size of his head. Abaporu inspired Tarsila’s husband at the time, the poet Oswald de Andrade, to write his celebrated “Cannibal Manifesto,” which flayed Brazil’s belletrist writers and called for an embrace of local influences – in fact, for a devouring of them. The European stereotype of native Brazilians as cannibals would be reformatted as a cultural virtue. More than a social and literary reform movement, cannibalism would form the basis for a new Brazilian nationalism, in which, as de Andrade wrote, “we made Christ to be born in Bahia.”

The unconventional nudes of A Negra, a painting produced in 1923, and Abaporu unite in Tarsila’s final great painting, Antropofagia, a marriage of two figures that is also a marriage of Old World and New. The couple sit entangled, her breast drooping over his knee, their giant feet crossed one over the other, while, behind them, a banana leaf grows as large as a cactus. The sun, high above the primordial couple, is a wedge of lemon.

C) pelo quadro Antropofagia, produzido antes da Semana de Arte Moderna. D) pelo estereótipo dos povos indígenas brasileiros. Leia o texto para responder à questão.Words that define the present

At a time when the world is changing more quickly than ever before, we need a new vocabulary to help us grasp what’s happening.

Catfishing. This word would make more sense if it referred to fishing for cats, but in fact, it refers to people who construct false identities online. Whether out of boredom, loneliness or malice, they lure other people into continued messaging correspondence, thereby building false relationships with them (the apparent source of the term “catfish” is a 2010 documentary called Catfish, whose verity, ironically enough, has been questioned).

There are two ways of looking at this: 1) The internet/ cyberspace is

wonderful, because it gives people the freedom to augment or totally change their identities, and this is a marvellous new dawn for human expression, a new step in human evolution.

2) Nah, it’s a false dawn, because the internet is essentially a libertarian arena, and,

Slumdog Millionaire

Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire” hits the ground running. This is a breathless, exciting story, heartbreaking and exhilarating at the same time, about a Mumbai orphan who rises from rags to riches on the strength of his lively intelligence. The film’s universal appeal presents the real India to millions of moviegoers for the first time.

The real India, supercharged with a plot as reliable and eternal as the hills. The film’s surface is so dazzling that you hardly realize how traditional it is underneath. But it’s the buried structure that pulls us through the story like a big engine on a short train.

By the real India, I don’t mean an unblinking documentary like Louis Malle’s “Calcutta” or the recent “Born Into Brothels.” I mean the real India of social levels that seem to be separated by centuries. What do people think of when they think of India? On the one hand, Mother Teresa, “Salaam Bombay!” and the wretched of the earth. On the other, the

“Masterpiece Theater”-style images of “A Passage to India,” “Gandhi” and “The Jewel in the Crown.”

The film uses dazzling cinematography, breathless editing, driving music and headlong momentum to explode with narrative force, stirring in a romance at the same time.

Questão 03 (PUC 2010)

From the Rural World to Urban Environment

By Alfonso Hernández Marín

The powerful influence of the city

What moves people to the big cities? According to experts like Jose Maria Llop, Director of the program on "Intermediate Cities and World Urbanization" in the International Union of Architects, one could talk of the

"fascination" that the city provokes as an image or interpretation of reality in its greatest socio-economic and historic scale. Some sociologists and anthropologists agree that the modern city represents the ultimate capitalist structure, the height of civilization, and its influence on the collective subconscious could be powerful enough to attract more and more people, even when the opportunities for progress and wellbeing are often false expectations.

The great megalopolis or world metropolis of our era, which many call an "urban revolution", is characterized by their duality in presenting a series of opportunities and problems. The first refers to greater autonomy, diversity of offers (employment, training, leisure, culture), the opportunity to participate in public politics, the socialization of new technologies and more options in terms of residence, activities or types of mobility. However, social segregation in a space has never been so pronounced, with growing inequalities in income and in real access to urban opportunities, vulnerable groups that often live in ghettos or peripheral neighbourhoods, and the increase in both transport time and time at work. All this provides a breeding ground for solitude and lack of solidarity and common environmental, urban and social problems such as criminality, poor outskirts and breakdown of common living structures. The picture that illustrates the text showsA) the false expectations of some sociologists and anthropologists.B) the diversity of offers in terms of residence, activities and types of mobility.C) one of the problems of the world metropolis.D) that most people in poor areas suffer from solitude.E) that people participate in public politics.

Our bodies produce a small steady amount of natural morphine, a new study suggests. Traces of the chemical are often found in mouse and human urine, leading scientists to wonder whether the drug is being made naturally or being delivered by something the subjects consumed. The new research shows that mice produce the “incredible painkiller” — and that humans and ther mammals possess the same chemical road map for making it, said study co-author Meinhart Zenk, who studies plant-based pharmaceuticals at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis, Missouri.

FATEC 2018

Technology brought us fake news — and it will help us kill it

“Fake news” - websites disseminating news stories that are false but are believed to be true – was a major feature of the U.S. election season. Some observers believe that it determined the outcome of the election, although there is no way to definitively ascertain its effect on voting.

Fake news is news that affects the digital universe profoundly. Fake news grew because of the ease of creating and disseminating websites and stories that look and read as credible as real news sites (at least to many people). It is disseminated on social media platforms just because dissemination of information without vetting has always been a feature of those platforms. This was designed to facilitate communication - no one removes a negative comment about a restaurant on Facebook.

On the positive side, this means that everyone’s opinion can be disseminated. The awareness of fake news, though, reveals a downside – or perhaps a loophole – of the freedom to post. And fake news may beget1

fake news. Facebook is not the only media company to be an inadvertent host for fake news, but it is by far the largest, with roughly 2 billion users each month.

Forbes indicates that the fallout2 from fake news during the election cycle may cause advertisers topull back from Facebook, as it is less “brand safe” than formerly. If unchecked, fake news could impact the perceived credibility of online sites where fake news runs. Since the election, Facebook has announced plans to refine and increase automated detection of fake news and to make reporting of suspected stories easier for Facebook users. It has also indicated that the current ad system will be changed, to interfere with fake news sites receiving revenue from Facebook.

Whem you combine the first letters of the words in a phrase or the name of an organisation, you have an acronym. Acronyms are spoken as a word so NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) is not pronouced N-A-T-O.

We say NATO. Bogof, when said out loud, is quite comical for a native speaker, as it sounds like an insult, \'Bog off\' meaning go away, leave me alone, slightly childish and a little old-fashioned.

BOGOF is the best-know of the supermarket marketing strategies. The concept was first imported from the USA during the 1970s recession, when food prices were very
