AS ÁGUASO Paraná leva as águas em seu

nome. Paraná, na língua Tupi,

significa rio. Hoje, o estado é

subdividido em duas bacias

hidrográficas: a Bacia do Rio

Paraná e a Bacia do Atlântico.

A Bacia do Rio Paraná, que

ocupa 92% do território

paranaense, é formada pelos

rios que pertencem ao sistema

de captação do rio Paraná, to-

dos eles correndo para oeste.

Entre os principais estão os

rios Paranapanema, Tibagi,

Ivaí, Piquiri e Iguaçu.

Em território paranaense, o rio

Paraná possui uma extensão de

400 km, sendo formado pela

Paraná carries water on its

name. Paraná, in Tupi, means

“river.” Currently, the state is

divided into two hydrographic

basins: the Paraná River Basin,

and the Atlantic Basin. The

Paraná River Basin, which

occupies 92% of the state’s

territory, is made up by rivers

that belong to the Paraná River

gathering system, all of them

running toward the west. Among

the main rivers of the basin are

the Paranapanema, Tibagi, Ivaí,

Piquiri, and the Iguaçu rivers.

Within the state’s territory, the

Paraná River is 400-kilometers

long, resulting from the junction

of the Parnaíba and the Rio

Grande rivers. Because it is a

mountain river, it favors the

building of dams such as the

Itaipu, which was inaugurated

in 1982.

The Atlantic hydrographic

basin serves as a water frontier

in the state since all of its rivers

run toward the Atlantic Ocean.

The main rivers of the Atlantic

Basin are the São João, the

Cubatão, the Guaratuba, the

Serra Negra, the Itaqui, the

Tagaçaba, the Cachoeira, the

Faisqueira, the Guaraguaçu,

and the Nhundiaquara rivers.

junção dos rios Parnaíba e Rio

Grande. Por ser um rio de pla-

nalto, favorece a construção de

barragens como a Hidrelétrica

de Itaipu, inaugurada em

1982.

A bacia hidrográfica do Atlân-

tico serve como uma fronteira

das águas do Estado, já que os

rios desta bacia correm em di-

reção ao Oceano Atlântico. Os

principais rios da Bacia do

Atlântico são os rios São João,

Cubatão, Guaratuba, Serra Ne-

gra, Itaqui, Tagaçaba, Cachoei-

ra, Faisqueira, Guaraguaçu e

Nhundiaquara.

A FLORABasicamente o Paraná apresen-

ta seis tipos de cobertura vege-

tal, que variam de acordo com

as condições de clima, relevo

e solo, e da região em que es-

tão localizadas. São elas: a

Mata ou Floresta de Araucária,

a Mata Atlântica, a Vegetação

Litorânea, a Floresta

Subtropical, os Campos e os

Cerrados.

As Matas de AraucáriaAs Matas de AraucáriaAs Matas de AraucáriaAs Matas de AraucáriaAs Matas de Araucária ou

Mistas, como também são de-

signadas pelos botânicos,

são representadas pelo Pinhei-

ro-do-Paraná (Araucaria

angustifolia) a árvore-símbolo

do Estado. Este tipo de vegeta-

ção ocupa principalmente a

porção central do Estado, aci-

ma de 500m de altitude, em

regiões onde o clima é mais

frio. A Floresta de Araucárias,

um bioma complexo que che-

gou a ocupar 40% da área do

estado, abriga espécies vege-

tais como a imbuia, o xaxim e

a canela, assim como espécies

animais como a cutia, a gra-

lha-azul, a anta e a onça-pinta-

da. No início do século 21,

menos de 5% da floresta de

araucária nativa do Estado

subsiste. A derrubada para ex-

ploração da madeira e o desen-

volvimento da agricultura e

pecuária foram os principais

motivos.

The FloraThe FloraThe FloraThe FloraThe Flora

Paraná presents six types of

vegetation, which vary

according to conditions of

climate, relief and soil, and the

region where it is located.

Namely: the Paraná-Pine Forest,

the Atlantic Forest, Coastal

vegetation, Subtropical Forest,

the Prairies, and the Cerrado (a

savannah-like vegetation).

The Paraná-Pine Forest, or

Mixed as they are also known by

botanists, are represented by the

Paraná-Pine (Araucaria

angustifolia), the state’s tree.

This type of vegetation occupies

mainly the central part of the

state at altitudes over 500

meters, in regions where the

weather is colder. The Paraná-

Pine Forest, a complex biome

that used to occupy 40% of the

state’s territory, shelters

vegetable species such as the

imbuia, fern-trees, and the black

cinnamon, as well as animals

such as the agouti, the azure jay,

the tapir, and the jaguar. In the

beginning of the 21st Century,

less than 5% of the native

Paraná-Pine forests subside. The

felling of trees for the

exploration of timber and the

development of agriculture and

pasture for cattle were the main

reasons.

SÉCULO XVIIISe por um lado a descoberta de

grandes jazidas de ouro em ou-

tras regiões do país deixou

quase desertas as pequenas vi-

las, por outro representou o de-

senvolvimento de um novo ci-

clo econômico: o tropeirismo.

Os tropeiros eram comercian-

tes de gado que cruzavam a re-

gião sul em direção à Feira de

Sorocaba, principal entreposto

de compra e venda de tropas.

Com o tropeirismo, surgiram

povoamentos, armazéns,

invernadas, hospedarias, ferra-

rias que aqueceram o comércio

em cidades como Curitiba, que

até então vivia apenas da agri-

cultura e da pecuária de sub-

sistência. Como os percur-

sos eram longos, os

tropeiros faziam várias

paradas para alimen-

tar a tropa e seu

gado, surgindo

daí vários nú-

cleos

populacionais

como Ponta

Grossa, Rio

Negro,

Campo do

Tenente,

Lapa, Porto

Amazonas,

Castro, Palmei-

ra, Piraí do Sul,

Jaguariaíva, e

Sengés, entre outros.

Em 1768, é construída

na Ilha do Mel a Fortaleza

de Nossa Senhora dos Pra-

zeres.

No mesmo ano, o Tenente Co-

ronel Afonso Botelho de

Sampaio e Souza recebe da Co-

roa Portuguesa a incumbência

de ocupar os campos de

Guarapuava. Depois de muitos

anos e enfrentamentos entre

brancos e índios, foi fundado

um povoado que veio a se cha-

mar Nossa Senhora de Belém.

Portugal pretendia, com isso,

assegurar o seu território tanto

no litoral como na parte Oeste.

Em 1780 é feito o primeiro

censo da população

paranaense, que contava com

17.685 habitantes.

Eighteenth CenturyEighteenth CenturyEighteenth CenturyEighteenth CenturyEighteenth Century

If on the one hand, the discovery

of large gold deposits in other

regions of the country left the

small villages almost deserted,

on the other hand it represented

the development of a new

economic cycle: cattle driving.

The cattle drivers, or tropeiros,

dealt cattle and crossed the

South coming from Rio Grande

do Sul, Uruguay and Argentina,

towards the Sorocaba Fair, the

most important cattle-dealing

outpost.

Because of cattle driving,

settlements, warehouses, inns,

and blacksmiths appeared and

increased commerce in cities like

Curitiba, which until then

depended only on agriculture. As

the routes were long, the drivers

were forced to stop every once in

a while to get food for themselves

and their cattle, thus several

settlements were established,

such as Ponta Grossa, Rio Negro,

Campo do Tenente, Lapa, Porto

Amazonas, Castro, Palmeira,

Lapa, Piraí do Sul, Jaguariaíva,

and Sengés, among others.

In 1768, the fort of Nossa

Senhora dos Prazeres is built in

the Ilha do Mel. In that same

year, Lt. Colonel Afonso Botelho

de Sampaio e Souza receive

orders from the Portuguese

Crown to occupy the region of

Guarapuava. After several years

of skirmishes between

Europeans and the

natives, a settlement,

Nossa Senhora de

Belém, was founded.

Portugal intended,

through this

action, to conquer

territory on the

West at the same

time that it

protected the

coastal area.

In 1780, the first

census of the population

of Paraná is done. The

stated counted on 17,685

inhabitants.

ANOS 80Em 1980, o Brasil recebe a visita

do Papa João Paulo II. O Paraná foi

um dos poucos estados brasileiros

visitados pelo pontífice, em função

do grande número de descendentes

de poloneses que o habitam. Foi a

maior concentração já vista em

Curitiba. Em três dias a cidade re-

cebeu cerca de um milhão pessoas.

Em 1982, José Richa, político da

região Norte do estado, é eleito

governador com uma votação ex-

pressiva na primeira eleição dire-

ta em 16 anos.

Ainda no ano de 1982 são fecha-

das as comportas de Itaipu. A

energia produzida por Itaipu favo-

rece todo o parque industrial loca-

lizado na região sudoeste. Com a

formação do lago, iniciada em se-

tembro de 1982, uma área estima-

da em cerca de 1.400 quilômetros

quadrados, mais da metade deles

em território brasileiro, é inunda-

da, inclusive a atração turística de

Sete Quedas, no Rio Paraná.

No ano de 1983 são registradas

as maiores enchentes já ocorridas

em território paranaense. Ao todo

foram sete regiões inundadas.

Em outro momento político, o

Paraná demonstra sua maturidade

na campanha Diretas Já. Um dos

primeiros comícios em todo o ter-

ritório nacional acontece em

Curitiba, no dia 12 de janeiro de

1984. Em plena Boca Maldita se

concentram cerca de trinta mil

pessoas. Pela primeira vez, depois

de um longo período, foi possível

ver no meio da multidão bandeiras

de vários partidos.

Na madrugada do dia 1º de agosto

de 1985 Curitiba foi tomada por

torcedores alviverdes que come-

moravam a conquista do campeo-

nato brasileiro pelo Coritiba Foot

Ball Club. Era a primeira vez que

um clube do Estado do Paraná

conquistava um campeonato bra-

sileiro.

Em 1986 acontece o tombamento

da porção paranaense da Serra do

Mar.

The EightiesThe EightiesThe EightiesThe EightiesThe Eighties

In 1980, Pope John Paul II

comes to Brazil. Paraná was one

of the few states visited by the

pontiff, because of the great

number of Polish descendants in

the state. It was the largest

people concentration ever seen

in Curitiba. In a three-day span,

the city received around 1

million people.

In 1982, José Richa, a

politician from upstate, is

elected governor by a

remarkable amount of votes in

the first direct election in 16

years.

Also in 1982, the Itaipu

floodgates are closed. The

electrical power produced in the

plant favors the industrial

complex located in the

Southwest of the state. The lake

formed by the dam an estimated

area of 1,400 square kilometers,

more than half of it in Brazilian

territory, including one of the

Paraná’s most cherished tourist

spots: the Sete Quedas Falls in

the Paraná River.

In 1983, the biggest floods ever

registered in the state cause

severe damage in seven regions

in the state.

In yet another political even,

Paraná shows its maturity

hosting pioneer demonstrations

for Direct Elections for

President on January 12, 1984.

Over 30,000 people gathered at

the Boca Maldita, waving, for

the first time, flags of once-

banned parties.

In the dawn of 1985, football

fans celebrating the National

Championship won by Coritiba

Foot Ball Club took the streets

of Curitiba. It was the first time

a team from the state had won

such a championship.

In 1986, the portion of the

Serra do Mar inside Paraná is

declared state patrimony.

Ao romper o século XXI o Clube

Atlético Paranaense tornou-se o

segundo clube de futebol do Es-

tado a sagrar-se campeão brasi-

leiro da primeira divisão. Em

2003, o Paraná completou 150

anos da sua emancipação políti-

ca e administrativa de São Pau-

lo. O Teatro Guaíra e a Bibliote-

ca Pública do Paraná são tomba-

dos como patrimônio cultural de

todos os paranaenses em come-

moração à data.

No dia 26 de julho de 2004 co-

memorou-se o sesquicentenário

da Lei nº 1 do Paraná. Essa lei

foi sancionada pelo presidente

da província Zacarias de Góis e

Vasconcelos e determinou, defi-

nitivamente, Curitiba como ca-

pital da mais nova província do

império brasileiro.

Um fenômeno importante a des-

tacar acontece na área da edu-

cação, com a implantação de um

número bastante significativo de

faculdades, centros universitári-

os e universidades espalhadas

por todo território do Paraná. Isto

aumentou as oportunidades para

o ingresso ao ensino superior. Ao

contrário do que ocorrera na dé-

cada de 1980, quando as chuvas

provocaram alagamentos ao lon-

go dos principais rios

paranaenses, nos pri-

meiros anos do

novo século

ocorreram

tempes-

tades vi-

olentas seguidas

de ventos superio-

res a 80 km por

hora que assolaram cidades in-

teiras. Por outro lado, uma longa

estiagem no ano de 2006 provo-

cou racionamento e rodízio na

distribuição de água na capital e

cidades localizadas na região

metropolitana de Curitiba. Em

alguns trechos do Rio Iguaçu foi

possível atravessar a pé de uma

margem a outra, como em São

Mateus do Sul e União da Vitó-

ria. A estiagem foi tão grande

que as imponentes Cataratas do

Iguaçu se transformaram em fi-

letes de água escorrendo entre

as rochas.

CenturyCenturyCenturyCenturyCentury

In the beginning of the

twentieth-first century, Clube

Atlético Paranaense becomes the

second team in the

state to win

the

national football

championship.

In 2003, Paraná

celebrated the 150th

anniversary of its political and

administrative emancipation

from São Paulo. The Guaíra

Theater and the Public Library

of Paraná are declared cultural

patrimony of all paranaenses as

part of the celebrations. On July

26, 2004, the sesquicentennial

of the state’s first law, Act No. 1,

was celebrated. This act was

passed by Zacarias de Góis e

Vasconcelos and determined

Curitiba as the capital of the

then-newest province in the

Brazilian Empire.

An important phenomenon in

the beginning of this century

happened in education, with

several colleges and universities

being implemented all over the

state. This fact increased the

opportunities for people to get

higher education.

Contrary to what had happened

in the eighties, when rains

caused floods along the main

rivers in Paraná, in the first

years of the new century, the

rains were scarcer, but when they

fell, they did so with a

vengeance: violent storms, with

winds over 80 kph razed entire

towns. On the other hand, a

long draught in 2006 forced

authorities to ration water in

Curitiba and its Metropolitan

area. Because of this draught, it

was possible to cross some

stretches of the Iguaçu River on

foot, in locations like São

Mateus do Sul and União da

Vitória. The draught was so

severe that the Iguaçu Falls

turned into water threads

running among the rocks.

First there were the trails by

which the first explorers,

following the steps of ancient

indian trails, sought riches,

challenges, or the simple thrill of

the discovery. Later, in the

nineteenth century, there were the

paved roads, such as the Graciosa,

responsible for the flow of maté,

Paraná’s green gold, to Brazil

and the world.

Nowadays, there are the highways

that, besides integrating Paraná,

connect the state to other states

and other countries. In the

beginning of the twentieth-first

century, they comprise 15,818.12

square kilometers of paved roads.

In this chapter, we travel the roads

of Paraná. We trek the most

ancient trails, the paths, the

streets, the alleys, the overpasses,

the dirt roads, the highways, the

mangroves and the channels. By

O que o Paraná é capaz de

construir? Qual a sua capaci-

dade de transformar, criar e re-

alizar? Estas são as perguntas

que pretendemos responder

neste capítulo. Aqui, em ima-

gens, reunimos desde as cha-

madas grandes obras da enge-

nharia, como é a Usina de

Itaipu, até a casa mais simples

construída com a técnica re-

passada de pai para filho ou

com a criatividade que a ne-

cessidade inspira. Partimos das

grandes construções até chegar

à construção mais importante

para o ser humano que é a sua

própria casa. Nesta caminha-

da, passamos pelas catedrais,

pelas igrejas, pelos templos.

A ARQUITETURANesta caminhada, encontramos

as antigas construções, os mo-

numentos, os parques.

Nesta caminhada, penetramos

nas influências indígenas e eu-

ropéias na arquitetura e no jei-

to de morar do povo do Paraná.

Aqui o barro, a madeira, o ci-

mento, o aço, o ferro, o vidro, o

tijolo, a criatividade e a

tecnologia revelam a história,

a cultura e o jeito de ser

paranaenses.

Se nos capítulos anteriores vi-

mos que o Paraná é recheado

de belezas naturais, neste ca-

zado e concretizado pelos pró-

intend to answer in this chapter.

Here, through images, we have

gathered everything, from the

so-called great engineering

works, such as the Itaipu Dam,

to the most humble house, built

with a father-to-son technology

or with the creativity inspired

by necessity. We range from

great works to the most

important work for a sole

human being – his or her own

house.

In this journey, we pass by

cathedrals, churches and

temples.

In this journey, we find ancient

buildings, monuments, parks.

In this journey, we penetrate

native and European influences

both in architecture and the

way of living of the people in

Paraná.

Here clay, wood, cement, steel,

iron, glass, bricks, creativity,

and technology all reveal

History, Culture, and the

Paranaenses’ way of life.

Whereas in previous chapters we

saw that Paraná is filled with

natural beauties, in this chapter

we observe what has been

conceived, devised, idealized,

and turned into reality by the

Paranaenses themselves.

O Paraná possui o quinto maior

PIB (Produto Interno Bruto) do

Brasil.

Apesar de ser muito conhecido

como um "Estado Agrícola" e

possuir grande parte do seu ter-

ritório ocupado por plantações,

os números apontam para outra

realidade. Nesta primeira déca-

da do século XXI, em números

arredondados, o setor de servi-

ços, força viva nas cidades e

metrópoles, representa 45% da

economia paranaense. O setor

industrial, que sugou muita gen-

te do interior do estado para as

regiões metropolitanas das

grandes cidades representa

41% da economia do Estado.

A ECONOMIA

facilidade e agilidade no esco-

amento de sua produção. Deve-

se ainda ter a lembrança de que

o Paraná é o maior produtor de

energia do país.

Neste capítulo, portanto, per-

corremos os meios como os

paranaenses utilizam e admi-

nistram as riquezas e os recur-

sos físicos, humanos e

tecnológicos do território em

que vivem.

Paraná owns the fifth biggest

GDP (Gross Domestic Product)

in Brazil.

Despite the fact that Paraná is

renowned as a “farm state” and

most of its territory is occupied

by plantations, the figures point

to another reality. In this first

decade of the twentieth-first

century, in rounded figures, the

service sector, living force in the

cities and metropolises, has a

45% share in the state’s

economy. The industrial sector,

which attracted thousands of

people to the biggest cities’

metropolitan areas, represents

41% of its economy.

Agriculture, on the other hand,

has a share of almost 14% in

the volume of produced wealth.

Another important factor in the

development of the state’s

economy is its good location in

relation to Mercosur and

easiness and agility in the

export of its production. It

should also be observed that

Paraná is the greatest producer

of electrical power in the

country.

Therefore, in this chapter we

present the ways people in

Paraná use and manage the

riches and the physical, human,

and technological resources of

the land they live in.

The port of Paranaguá, with its 2,610-meters pier, is the second largest in the country.

O PARANAENSEO Brasil é uma mistura. Aqui

somos todos imigrantes, via-

jantes. Talvez seja esta uma

das grandes vantagens de ser-

mos o Novo Mundo.

No sul do país, acentua-se a

presença do italiano, do ale-

mão, do polonês, do ucraniano,

do holandês, do japonês, mas

com o detalhe de que nenhum

descendente de europeu daqui

é igual ao europeu da europa.

Ficaram os traços, mas as mis-

turas e a influência do vento,

das águas, das terras brasilei-

ras e dos próprios brasileiros

criaram um novo povo. No

Paraná, a isto chamamos de

paranaense, um povo que tem

como jeito de ser o jeito de não

ter nenhum jeito específico de

ser. Uns são acanhados, outros

extrovertidos. Alguns falantes,

outros calados.

Sabemos que há um Paraná,

mas fica a pergunta: Qual será

o Paranaense?

Brazil is a melting pot. Here,

each and every one of us is an

immigrant, a traveler. Maybe

this is one of the greatest

advantages of us being the New

World.

In the south of the country, the

presence of the Italians, the

Germans, the Poles, the

Ukrainians, the Dutch, the

Japanese, is stressed, but with

the detail that no European

descendant in here is like the

Europeans in Europe. The

features remained, but the

mixture and the influence of the

wind, the waters, the Brazilian

lands, and of Brazilian

themselves, have created a new

people. In Paraná, we call this a

Paranaense, people whose way

of being is not having any

specific way of being. Some are

bashful, other extroverted. Some

are talkative, others are silent.

We know that there is a Paraná,

but the question remains: Who

is the Paranaense?

In this chapter, we travel by the

faces, the soul, the habits, the

customs, and the creations of the

Paranaense people, to try and

discover them, figure them out,

and reveal to them what they

don’t even know about

themselves.

It’s time for a friendly “good morning” in countryside Paraná.
