Observação:
Todas as exceções do grau dos adjetivos e dos advérbios estão no comparativo e no
superlativo de superioridade.
Exemplo 1 Just forma o comparativo e o superlativo como se fosse dissílabo.
Ex. He is more just to his enemies than to his friends.
Exemplo 2 Crescimento ou aumento( ou diminuição) paralelo é introduzido por comparativos precedidos de the (artigo definido).
Ex. The bigger, the better
The more I see you, the more I want you.
The harder he worked, the happier he was.
Exemplo 3
Aumento ou diminuição gradual é mostrado por palavras, no comparativo, repetidas, ligadas por and.
Ex. They gripped the wrought iron bars of the fence tighter and tighter.
She was less and less happy with her job.

(A)Com o valor de em adição a ou adicional, further e furthest prevalecem; para a ideia em tempo ou espaço tanto farther/ farthest como further/ furthest podem ser empregados.
Ex. London is farther (further) than New York.

(B) Next somente se refere a ordem: o próximo, o seguinte:
Ex. She lives nearer the fitness center than I.
The next train leaves at five on the dot.
Apresentam formas irregulares:
( C) Elder não pode ser seguido de than e significa o mais velho entre dois e eldest é o mais velho para mais de dois. Ambos se usam para parentes próximos, geralmente irmãos.
Ex. She is the elder of my children.
(D) Latter significa este, o segundo entre dois, opondo-se a former, o primeiro entre dois. Last, o último, se refere a vários e tem como antônimo first ou next.
Ex. Mark and Richard work together; the latter is my nephew.He stayed here in the last years of his life.
