Como alternativa à abordagem da arquitetura comercial da globalização,
que transforma todos os edifícios de escritórios em edifícios tipo torre
vidro hermeticamente seladas, Yannas (2008), na publicação
Reconceiving the Built Environments of the Gulf Region, Challenging the
Supremacy of Air Condiontiong, demonstrou a viabilidade de redução do
total de demanda energética para a climatização de um edifício
comercial padrão, em Abu Dhabi, de 230 kWh/m2 ano, para apenas 36
kWh/m2 ano.

Os quase 85 por cento de queda da demanda energética foram alcançados
com uma serie de mudanças no modelo arquitetônico, incluindo a
diminuição da area de vidro nas fachadas (wwr) de 100 para 50 por cento e
a melhora da resistência térmica da área envidraçada e a inserção de
sombreamento, seguidas pela redefinição da temperatura maxima de
conforto de 22°C para 29°C (sendo essa a medida singular de maior
reducao da carga termica de resfriamento), que em conjunto tornaram a
ventilação natural possivel por seis meses consecutivos, no clima
aparentemente tao rigoroso de Abu Dhabi.
