This number of the Publications of the Robinson Foundation
documents the long process of the notable improvement works
for the Municipal Museum of Portalegre.
With an extensive history as a Museum with successive
museological recompositions, this space for the future has now
been handed back to the city and all those who visit us, with
its defining characteristic the fruit of spatial, museological and
museographical modernity.
The period described here, in greater or lesser detail, cov‑
ers all the stages, which range from the study and analysis of
the building’s heritage and the collections housed within it, to
the museographical finalisation work, which was based on an
extremely rich proposal involving detailed readings, which were
studied in an open manner by qualified technicians with an
experienced position in the area of Museums.
In fact, municipal Museums are never easy to operate. The
variety of their inventories which, particularly in Portalegre,
contain bequeathed collections and items left in the care of the
municipal authority, have generally increased and are inter‑
twined with the Community of visitors, future donators, staff,
researchers and volunteers, in an extensive mediation which
always involves commitment and which is fruitful in its results.
As such the Municipal Museum of Portalegre, which is a
place of heritage offered within its walls to the objects which
fill it, whether in the exhibition or in the reserve collection, has
had to constitute itself in a dynamic way, which the proposed
arrangement, now inaugurated, has provided us with.
It is to be hoped that the Community feels the Museum as its
own, as a place to visit, for learning, for aesthetic well‑being and
questioning, besides being able to present itself as an ideal place,
since as an institution it is technically equipped to safeguard the
treasures of each of us, which deserve to be shared, and those of
the Community, which deserve to be taught and learnt.
Exhibition proposals, the exhibitional game between the
pieces here or those which can be requested from other national
and international museums will, certainly, embody a cultural
reality full of creation and movement, propitious for the docu‑
menting of the collections and their catalogue recording and as
such take on a leading position in the place of memory in the
Portalegre Community.

The 16th century building designed by Pero Vaz Pereira
underwent alterations in 1765.
It housed the Diocesan Seminary and the Portalegre
High School before its use as the Municipal Museum.
There was competition for utilisation of the place given
its special location alongside the Cathedral, and benefiting
from the resultant extension of the urban area1.
When the Museum, and the Municipal Library, were
located there, the building underwent a series of works which
considerably altered the building and its spaces, and which
annexed a small adjacent construction to the North East.
According to documents written during the first stage
of the Restoration Project of the Former Seminary of the
Diocese and its adaptation to a Museum and Municipal
Library, in February and June 1956, signed by João Gon-
çalves Proença, the works were carried out by the Town Hall
utilising as a consultant Dr. Cayola Zagalo, the then cura-
tor of Ajuda Palace.
The works significantly altered the composition of the
construction materials and their finishings, and the actual
distribution of its spaces, according to the principles of the
period regarding works in building patrimony.
The description of the works includes the demolition
of a large part of the constructional parts of the building,
in some cases for later repositioning or substitution with a
new copy.
This was the case with regard to some of the stones lin-
ing the walls and ashlars of the doors, the steps and railings
for the main staircase.
The wooden floors were substituted with concrete
slabs, in order to support the loads caused by the locating
there of the Library, and large arches were opened covered
with stone to enlarge the existing internal spans.

The facades absorbed the modest building which was
annexed to the East, continuing, in the main facade with the
same rhythm of spans alternating with ornamental motifs.
After 50 years the building required major remodel-
ling due to the emergence of problems due to its construc-
tion, and the exhibitional process showed the passage
of time with regard to new concepts and technologies2.

1 Susana Bicho refers to this fact when writing of “The Museum. Field of
Representations”. “If it is thought that this Museum is located by the Cathe‑
dral, alongside the most extraordinary collection of altarpieces and paintings
which ennoble this Diocesan church, we cannot but feel crushed by such a
singular juncture brought together within such a tiny space.” With these
words by João Couto we can understand the importance and prestige atta‑
ched to the location chosen for the Municipal Museum of Portalegre.2 A situation common to many museums and museological spaces, as men‑
tioned by Josep Maria Montaner “The fact that the starting point is his‑
torical buildings, with existing typological features, delimits the creative
possibilities within a logic of what currently exists. This is the case with old
monuments which, for decades, have been transformed into museums and
which need to be modernised; works on existing museums, which need to
be restructured and enlarged; and the long list of ancient buildings ‑ pala‑
ces, factories, hospitals, barracks ‑ converted into museums and centres of
art, in which use is made of the established typological structure through
a prior spatial compartmentalisation involving lobbies, staircases, cour‑
tyards, aisles, wings and galleries. Any thorough intervention works follo‑
wing such logic should start form a typological analysis of the existing buil‑
ding to revitalise it and enrich its urban dimension.
n o t a s

The entrance portal, crowned by the coat of arms of the
diocese, emphasises the symmetry of the main facade and the
floor plan, and falls on the transversal axis of the construc-
tion, which takes in the central staircase and the access to the
courtyard at the back.
The start of the stairs is through a succession of arches,
which also define the line of a longitudinal axis, which crosses
the building parallel to the facade, and which corresponds to
the distribution of the spaces.
The facades have excellent worked stones, in yellow gran-
ite from the region, with Palladian mouldings in the form of
curves and pediments, enabling the elevations to be read in a
Baroque manner.
Despite the previous works having removed some of its
essential characterisation, the patrimonial value of the con-
struction required careful rehabilitation and restoration
works.
On the one hand there were construction problems to be
resolved and, on the other hand it was important to endow
the spaces with a formal coherence.
What was sought was major but discrete intervention
works regarding the key values of the construction, but with
a contemporary identification through the introduction of a
thorough and clean design, involving current levels of com-
fort and, where necessary, the introduction into the infra-
structure of lighting and environmental comfort systems,
essential to new museological requirements.
In searching out the key values of the building, special
attention and rigour were placed on detailed design, result-
ing in a cleanliness of form, as a unifying criterion through
the intervention works.
These works sought to establish a programme intro-
ducing new concepts, new functions and new ways of exhib-

between all the stakeholders involved in the process.
The need to enlarge the available area led to the inte-
gration of a small building to the North East. This addi-
tion meant that the floor plan was configured in an approx-
imately rectangular form. The perimeter of the constructed
area includes an exterior courtyard, which is gardened, fac-
ing North.
The increase in this area enabled new functions1: in
addition to a temporary exhibitions room, an introductory
sample or interpretative centre of the museum and its col-
lections and a room for the collector, new areas were intro-
duced providing support for the public, namely a reception,

the ideal place to be2. A space was also created for the educa-
tional service, directly connected to the patio, the Reserves
area and technical areas.
A rational using of the existing, now working, space was
carried out, and a division of the spaces made into floors. The
permanent exhibition was spread throughout the two upper
floors of the ancient building, and the temporary exhibitions
in the enlarged area, with a possibility of a separate entry.
The visitor support areas are located in the west wing
of the ground floor, to the left of the main entrance, which
extend along the lower floors of the new building, along with
the space for the interpretation of the museum.
The educational service and the museum services are to
the east of the entrance.
The annexed building, although more modest, has a del-
icate facade on to the road with a central stone containing a
coat of arms. It has a distinct scale in relation to the main
building in terms of its own circulation areas and this contrib-

has now been supplemented by a secondary entrance, located
in the extended area which has enabled new pathways through
the museum to be established. The temporary exhibitions

serve as support from the collections originating from the
convents of the city and the museum donors.
As an alternative, the lift takes away the architectural lim-
itations to enable a panoramic view over the garden. It is sit-
uated in a strategic location to allow the connection between
the two construction blocks, at different levels, between the
building of the museum and what is now annexed, in the com-
mon patio.
Closed in a transparent tower and free of the main con-
struction, it provides access through glassed walkways.
The arches which were formerly open have been regular-
ised into rectangular porticos to provide for a new organisa-
tion of the public and private areas.
On the first floor the existing walls were opened up in the
form of porticos in the same way as the lower floor. In this way
large interconnecting spaces were established to allow for an
extensive employment of proximity and contraction. The por-
ticos hark back to former times and organise the space in a sub-
tle and almost symmetrical manner through the longitudinal
and transversal axes along with the central staircase. These cre-
ate exhibitional centres within the display area.
On the upper floor, the replacement of the roofing struc-
ture has enabled the attic area to be utilised and to increase the
exhibitional area and provide a better framing for the pieces.
Referencing the pre-existing elements and the well-
defined axes throughout the whole building, a small new
body lightly raised from the side of the ridge, provides a sky-
light for zenith lighting and natural ventilation, emphasising
the presence of the longitudinal axis of the building.
The patio, now landscaped with new planted areas and
water elements, serves as a support for some archaeological
pieces and invites the visitor to stay, and the educational ser-
vices to make use of it.

The time which passed between the beginning of the
process and the initial draft, in 2003, and the completion
of the works, in 2011, enabled an exhaustive analysis of the
construction to be carried out.
Existing anomalies were corrected and alterations con-
sidered necessary from a constructional point of view were
carried out.
Certain situations were identified right at the start, the
most important being the repair of the significant number
of cracks in load-bearing masonry walls of stone and brick.
It was accepted that the main cause of this overloading
was the introduction of concrete slabs in the 1960s, a situa-
tion worsened by the opening of the large arches in the walls
of the ground floor. The decision was made to relieve the con-
struction of its excessive weight, thus returning the construc-
tion to a situation closer to the original building typology.
The concrete blocks were removed through cuts along-
side the walls, along with the flooring of the first and sec-
ond floors, which was substituted by structures made of
light metal beams, pressed wood planks, and wooden pan-
elled flooring. The concrete mat slab alongside the ceiling
was also removed.
The peripheral walls were also reinforced through the
placing of crossed metal bars under the mortar plaster.
The wooden beams of the roofing, which were based on
walls of brick masonry on the roof slab of the second floor,
were substituted by a light metal structure
This structure is raised to the centre, in the longitudi-
nal direction, to support the skylight lighting and natural
ventilation.
During the carrying out of the works, there were prob-
lems of supporting the central walls on the top floor, along
the former longitudinal corridor, as well as alterations in

the roofing structure, which led to the elimination of part
of these walls, leaving the volume of the skylight free, and
without visible support on its South side.
The existence of humidity and soluble salts were also
detected on the walls, in the South East angle of the build-
ing, on the exterior, and inside throughout the area of the
central stone staircase. Besides the growing humidity, an
unsuitable quantity of mortars was shown to possibly have
contaminated sands, and cement.
These anomalies were resolved with the removal of all
the plaster and the application of new mortar, with a suita-
ble composition, with a base of sandy lime.
In addition, an exhaustive study was made of the envi-
ronmental processing to carry out, which essentially involved
the fitting of a central heating system through heated floor-
ing, and ventilation with humidification. The subsoil was
drained along with the flooring being thermally thermal insu-
lated, not only with the purpose of acclimatising and conserv-
ing the pieces, but also in order to conserve the building.

Various components of wall were identified, and a vis-
ible record of this, protected by glass, has been left on the
ground floor, in one of the walls in the reception area and
Museum Shop, where various layers of stone and brick can
be seen, showing the different construction periods.
Also discovered, in the same area near the main
entrance, was a small basement area which may have func-

tioned as a cistern. It has remained visible through a trans-
parency created in the flooring, using a glass section.
A latrine was also discovered which was fenced in, at the
Northern limit of the extension building. An area was left
in the wall which may easily be removed to provide access,
thus preparing for any possible works in this regard in the
near future.
In the widened area, the interior of the building, which
had no patrimonial interest, was practically all demolished
and a cellar was constructed for the reserve collection,
extending under the patio to the technical areas, with a con-
struction system involving traditional reinforced concrete
having been utilised.
Traditional materials were used, such as yellow bush-
hammered granite stone in the ground floor floorings, in
accordance with the existing construction, in its major
areas, and the wooden flooring on the upper floors, a mate-
rial compatible with the light structures which were intro-
duced, as well as with the exhibition.
In the main area of the main building the moveable
aspects of the building were conserved as much as possi-
ble, such as the main exterior door and part of the interior
doors, which are protected with windshields in a manner so
as to allow their permanent opening, and create the neces-
sary safety conditions against fire, as well as thermal comfort.
Both on the exterior and the interior, part of the doors
were substituted with metal and glass frames, to open
spaces, create a homogenous reading between all the areas,
as well as identify the alterations introduced.
The shutters were conserved, which are thought to date
from the 18th century, which were redistributed to empha-
sise important rows. On the other spans new shutters were
fitted, plain white for the walls.

Vasco Moreira Rato2.

The panes were replaced with similar ones, in painted
wood and double-glazed, in order to improve the thermal
performance of the building.
The introduction of infrastructure essential for the
setting up of the Museum required the creation of spe-
cific technical areas and paths for the passage of cables and
pipes. As such, changes were introduced, rationally placed in
the existing walls, increasing its thickness and joining tech-
nical cabinets.
The lighting involved different equipment for the var-
ious effects necessary, with the introduction of indirect
lighting for the stone arches and the stone elements which
were to be emphasised, and spotlights on electrified rails
embedded in the ceilings to highlight the pieces, and also
continuous and direct linear lighting for working areas.
The building was protected with sealing materials and
thermal insulation, as well as by intumescent paints in all
the new floorings and ceiling.
Acoustic correction was introduced in the roofs, in areas
where individuals stay longer, such as the cafeteria, recep-
tion and shop, working areas and the educational service.
In order to resolve certain constructional problems and
better conserve the building and the pieces to be exhibited,
the team was able to rely on the vital contributions of Luís
Elias Casanovas1 and Vasco Moreira Rato2.

The building housing the Municipal Museum of Por-
talegre was constructed in 1549 at the behest of D. Frei
Amador Arrais (1530-1600), and was designated for use as
the Seminary for the recently created Diocese of Portalegre2.
Nowadays nothing remains of the sixteenth century design,
with all the elements of the original building eliminated dur-
ing the 18th century works which involved major changes to
the building, both physically and functionally3. Indeed, the
15th bishop of Portalegre, D. João de Azevedo (who passed
away in 1765), was the individual responsible for the archi-
tectural redefinition of the building4, in the second half of
the 18th century, a process which also happened during this
period to numerous other mansion houses in the histori-
cal centre of Portalegre, and which would leave an indelible
mark on the outline of the 18th century city.
The building which housed the former Seminary would
however have to wait until the second half of the 20th century
before it was used to accommodate the Municipal Museum.
This institution, set up with the specific purpose of conserv-
ing works with a historical and artistic value, was created in
1918 and exhibited its collections to the public in a small
do Concelho.
viriam a integrar o novo espólio museológico.

room in the Town Hall. In 1932 it was transferred to the dis-
solved Convent of São Bernardo, a place of origin for many
of the pieces which would form part of the new museologi-
cal collection.
In the late 1950s the museum was moved to the for-
mer Seminary building, which in the meantime had housed
a Primary School, and it was inaugurated on 28 May 19615.
The number of pieces in the collections increased in the
following years and it became necessary to carry out modi-
fication works on the building, although it was only in the
1980s that the museum occupied the whole space, follow-
ing the vacation of the building by the Municipal Library in
1982.
The new Municipal Museum now had a collection of
pieces quite wide-ranging not only in chronological terms
(16th to 20th centuries) but also in the various areas which
made up the collection: sacred arts, faience, porcelain cups,
furniture, tapestries, terra cotta images of the Virgin,
images of Saint Anthony and other objects related to the
figure of the saint (most of them stemming from the dona-
tion of Herculano Madeira Curvelo), snuff boxes, fans, etc.
The first major set of pieces consisted of sacred art
objects, originating from former religious establishments in
the city, which are now extinct, such as the chapels of São
Pedro and São Miguel, which have now disappeared, and
the convents, particularly those of São Bernardo and Santa
Clara, which provided the largest number of pieces for the
museum’s collection.
It is however considered highly likely that most of these
pieces could have belonged to other convents or monaster-
ies, not just in the city but also in the council or district itself.
The second major source of pieces for the museum
came from private collectors which, at any moment, would
individuais. Neste sentido destacam ‑se as colecções do Dr. José

be donated or sold to the Town Hall by the collectors them-
selves or their relatives. Although not all of them were from
the city, through their donations or sales of their pieces they
showed a recognition of an intrinsic historical value of the
city in having chosen it and, in the final instance, its museum
as the pole of attraction for experiences and individual aspi-
rations. Of particular note in this connection are the col-
lections of Dr. José António de Andrade Sequeira (oriental
pieces and snuff boxes), of Emílio Castro (“ratinho” plates),
of Dr. Laureano Sardinha (Arraiolos carpets, ceramic pieces,
plates, also including some “ratinhos”), or that of Dr. José
Nunes Serigado made up, amongst other objects, of Chinese
and European porcelain cups. One of the most important
names associated with the birth of the Municipal Museum
of Portalegre was that of Dr. Cayola Zagallo, curator of Ajuda
Palace in Lisbon between 1938 and 1964 who, after ceasing
his functions there resided for a time in Portalegre. During
this period, Zagallo edited a report where he outlined some
new strategies to stimulate culture and tourism for the city,
emphasising the new Municipal Museum, the Convent of
São Bernardo and that of São Francisco6.
His suggestions are, on many levels, quite contempo-
rary, taking into account that he dealt with aspects which
are relevant nowadays such as the potential tourist profit-
ability for each building, as well as the conservation of the
historic centres and their authenticity.
Zagallo would also equally provide the notion (albeit
embryonic) of a “network of museums” in Portalegre, with
it being considered that his contribution involved turn-
ing the (then) church of the Convent of São Francisco into
a “museum”, working closely with the Municipal Museum
and with the José Régio House/Museum. In his own words,
the rehabilitation of São Francisco “\[…] besides being an

Igreja das Mercês, in Évora, could constitute an annex for the

matter is dealt with forthwith \[…]”7.
Cayola Zagallo ended up becoming a donator to the
Municipal Museum and bequeathed it various objects,
mainly pieces of furniture and ceramics and, in particular, an
Assumption of the Virgin (MMP.1073/0038.P), painted in
brass, and attributed to Lorenzo Gramieri, a painting which
served as the model for the main altar of Elvas Cathedral.
Also part of his bequest is the set of Virgins in terra cotta and
images of Saint Anthony (ceramics from Estremoz).
Of special note also was Rui Serrano Nunes Seque-
ira (1933?–?2000), whose passion for collecting led him
to have brought together, by the end of his life, more than
10 000 pieces (sacred and other artistic objects) from vari-
ous periods and locations, with special note for his collec-
tion of images of Saint Anthony, the Virgin and Christ on
the Cross (the largest on this topic in the world). His aspira-
tions included creating new museological branches in Por-
talegre, a city which he greatly loved and which he would be
appointed as its “ambassador”.
Among the collections donated to the Museum or pur-
chased by the Town Hall is the collection of paintings belong

interesse integrar o mencionado monumento, no número das
principais atracções de Portalegre. […]
Cristo Crucificado (a maior do Mundo nesta temática).

to artists who during the first part of the 20th century made
Portalegre their home. Some provided a major cultural and
intellectual dynamism to the city, in particular names like
Abel Santos, Arsénio da Ressurreição, Benvindo Ceia, Lauro
Corado or also the actual resident João Tavares, whose col-
laboration with Guy Fino led to various pieces involving Tap-
estry Manufacture. Also of note was the time spent in Por-
talegre by Manuel Trindade d’Assumpção, whose early death
would interrupt his promising evolution as an artist from the
expressionist to the surrealist movement.
The Municipal Museum of Portalegre can thus be seen
as the inheritor par excellence of the city’s historical and artis-
tic past, representing assets originating from former reli-
gious establishments but, however, owing its growth to the
generosity of various collectors committed to the defence
and the preservation of its patrimony. After a long period in
which the museum was closed and underwent major reha-
bilitation works, it was re-opened on 23 May 2012, with a
new museological dimension, thus restoring to the city and
its inhabitants a significant part of its identity and its collec-
tive memory.

What has already been questioned has been the primacy
of mechanical solutions and the establishing of univer-
sal values for environmental conditions within museologi-
cal spaces and when considering the study of the Municipal
Museum of Portalegre, it is most important before anything
else, to get to know the collection, the building, its charac-
teristics and the surrounding environment, so as to be able
to specify any possible solution so as to ensure environ-
mentally correct and sustainable conditions. Given this, the
temperature and relative internal humidity were recorded
and an attempt was made to supplement this information
with reliable data concerning the external conditions, pro-
vided by the services of the Portuguese Institute for the
Sea and the Atmosphere. It is particularly important to be
able to interpret certain occasional anomalies which are due
to an inversion of subsidence1 cause by the location of the
Institute’s weather station, which is located 597 m above
sea level, higher than the Museum which is 479 m above
sea level. Under such circumstances, the values for rela-
tive humidity and relative temperature observed inside the
Museum are different from those observed under normal
conditions. There remains invariable, however, the stability
of these values.
As an example, during August 2000 the temperature
of the Sacred Art room varied between a minimum of 22ºC
and a maximum of 26ºC and the relative humidity varied
between a minimum of 35% and a maximum of 50%, with
there being no daily variation greater than 4%. No electro-
mechanical equipment could ensure these values even if the
most sophisticated equipment were to be utilised. In this
respect it is worth quoting Jonathan Ashley– Smith, an
internationally renowned specialist who for many years was
responsible for the conservation services of the Victoria and

Albert Museum in London who wrote: “It is easy to state
that the ideal situation would be for there to be no fluctua-
tions but this is the ideal in the sense of being unattainable.
If the presence of people is allowed in the same space as that
containing the objects there is no financial and technical
resource which can ensure a totally stable environment”2.
This serene lucidity can certainly be echoed within the
Museum of Portalegre, proof of which are the paper hydro-
graphic readings reproduced here where the variations both
in temperature and relative humidity have been consider-

ably reduced and the structural correction works had not
been started, and on the day they were collected and the
public had access, with the records of the José Régio House/
Museum referring to a relatively light structure.
It is thus important to consider what has taken place
in the last few years as far as the definition of environmen-
tal conditions in museological spaces has generally been
concerned, taking as a point of departure a text published
in The Getty Conservation Institute Newsletter “Passive
Design, Mechanical Systems and Doing Nothing”3. There,
The Getty Conservation Institute Newsletter “Passive Design, Mechanical Systems and Doing Nothing”3.

Tim Padfield argues the thesis regarding the recourse to
thermal inertia for the construction which he had consid-
ered in Studies in Conservation4 and proposed to “do noth-
ing”. Given the external conditions in Portalegre, the solu-
tion argued to avoid conventional environmental control is
fully justified, as has been argued elsewhere5.
In the meanwhile, the concept of sustainability has
acquired increasing importance and in April 2009 a con-
ference was held in London entitled “Going Green: towards

door climate and natural indoor climate”. In this text we
presented as a case study the Historical Archive of the Santa
Casa da Misericórdia in Lisbon as an example of Tim Pad-
field’s “doing nothing”, using as a justification our climate,
where the Mediterranean features are mitigated, as Orlando
Ribeiro6 wrote, “waning under the humid and warm pres-
sure of the great Atlantic slipstream.”
Thus, rather than respecting norms originating from
other cultures, it is important to study our own reality with-
out preconceptions, and firstly respect the clear climatic
personality which we possess, as was proposed by Juan Vilá
Valenti7.

Museums are the faithful holders and the main defend-
ers of a patrimony that is everybody’s.
Among the many tasks for the preservation of memory
which are carried out in museums, one of the most impor-
tant is, without a doubt, the inventorying of its collections.
What then does this task of inventorying the objects
which make up the collection of a Museum involve? What, in
essence, is inventorying?
According to Law No. 107/2001, of 8 September, inven-
torying consists of surveying existing cultural assets, with a
view to their respective identification. Law number 47/2004
of 19 August – the Framework-Law for Portuguese Museums
- adds that museological inventorying consists of an “exhaus-
tive recording of cultural assets which constitute the actual
complete collection of each Museum”, seeking “the identifi-
cation and individualisation of each cultural item”. It should
be added that only through this work of inventorying does
it become possible to ensure the correct management and
protection of patrimony under the protection of Museums,
hence one starts from this study and later its dissemination.
This is, therefore, one of the tasks that the Municipal
Museum of Portalegre has been carrying out since 1989.
Until that date there was only one book of Records where
some of the objects were recorded which at the time consti-
tuted its holdings. An honourable mention was the Antho-

nian collection from Herculano Curvelo which, when it was
donated in 1985, came with a file listing all of its contents.
So in 1989 the work of inventorying the collections of
the Municipal Museum began.
Initially hand written, the inventorying of its patri-
mony consisted of only minimal data to identify works: the
title, description, its sizes and its dating. Much of this infor-
mation reached us orally, through former and current mem-
bers of staff, who had accompanied the process of receiv-
ing the objects.
Later, during the 1990s, the photographic inventorying
of the holdings became an essential step towards a more sci-
entific and accurate identification of the museological objects.
Conscience of the growing importance of new technol-
ogy as applied to information and cultural spaces such as
Libraries and Museums, the digitalisation of the museolog-
ical inventory became a necessity, and the next logical step
to be taken. The digitalisation of the inventory would enable
tasks to be more streamlined and facilitated, a better organi-
sation in terms of collecting and classifying data, a diversifi-
cation of these and a greater speed in accessing information
and its processing, thus fulfilling one of the objectives of the
mission of Museums, to document in order to preserve, while
simultaneously allowing a better understanding of the past.
With the acquisition, at the end of the 1990s, of the inte-
grated museological software management system InARTE,
it then became possible to start the digitalisation of the exist-
ing inventory, providing the opportunity to add supplemen-
tary information, according to the Inventorying Standards
laid down by the then Portuguese Institute of Museums.
Flexible and multi-structured, the software allowed
information to be introduced at one’s own rhythm and took
into account the knowledge which had been acquired over
time regarding the inventoried objects.
This was an on-going process that we knew would never
end, and even today information is introduced and updated

António Sequeira: I started my functions at the Municipal Museum of Portalegre as an Assistant Museography Technician on 23 July
1986. I started a process of learning, of acquiring knowledge about the museum pieces and the history of the city, in regard to the inven-
torying of that same collection, and at that time there were two records books, which were very incomplete. With the arrival of a Graduate
Technician, a new boss for the museums of the city of Portalegre which existed during that time, a handwritten process of inventorying was
started (with the assignment of a number, title, description and measurements) of all the collections of the Municipal Museum, for which
some research was necessary along with contacts with various family members or people who had known the reality of life in the convents.
In June 1999, with the purchase by the Portalegre Town Hall of a computer software program “In Arte Plus”, a new cycle of inventorying
the Municipal Museum collections was begun. At that time, I attended training sessions to adapt to this new reality. The inventory became
more complete, with an enormous diversification of fields and greater access to information sought on any piece. In 2008 the software pro-
gram “In Arte Premium” was purchased, and this led to some technological updating in the inventorying and management of the museum’s
collections. Throughout these years there was a parallel process of a photographical inventorying of the holdings which developed from
paper to slides to being digitalised, and to which I also contributed. Contrary to the initial archival book, nowadays the inventory has been
duly digitalised and every day new information is added, in a never ending process.

Moments such as the one which the Municipal Museum
has recently passed through, in which a museological space
was closed to the public for improvement works, are excel-
lent for working on its holdings, given that all the pieces are
removed from their place of exhibition and it is possible to
carry out an in-depth assessment of their state of conserva-
tion and carry out conservation and restoration work when-
ever it is shown to be necessary.
Out of the vast collection which makes up the Museum,
few pieces have previously received attention, with only two
records of work previously carried out at the Instituto José de
Figueiredo – a relief of Saint Bernard, in multi-coloured gilded
wood from the 16th century, to form part of the XVII Euro-
pean Exposition of Art, Science and Culture (Lisbon, 1983)
and the Flemish Pietá relief, in multi-coloured gilded wood
from the 16th century , when a request was received for it to
form part of the exhibition at Europalia (Belgium, 1991). In
2004 a protocol was signed between the Town Hall and the
Polytechnic Institute of Tomar, which enabled work to be car-
ried out on four paintings, four sculptures and a set of twelve
small reliefs in multi-coloured terra cotta.
The Robinson Foundation, through the Patrimony Net-
work, was involved in the dismounting, conservation and res-
toration works carried out during the works period and its
remounting. As soon as the pieces had been removed from
the building a process of disinfestation of practically all the
wooden pieces was begun, since the presence of xylophagous
insects, in many cases an active presence, was clear. Given the
enormous quantity of pieces the disinfestation was carried
out using controlled atmosphere technology (CAT).1
After many years of being exhibited, without any type of
work done to them, and after having been kept in the Reserve
collection for four years (2009-2012), it was clear that work

was needed on many pieces. As such, out of the 686 pieces
currently being exhibited, 322 were subject to treatment dur-
ing this period. While in some cases the treatment involved
just a superficial cleaning, the application of a wax, the gluing
of a break, in other cases it was necessary to carry out full con-
servation and restoration work.
The most frequent pathologies were the accumulation of
dust and dirt on practically the whole collection, loss of col-
our and lacerations in the upholstery of the chairs and cana-
pés, the drying out of wooden elements, the darkening of var-
nishes and lacquers in the picture frames, detachment of col-
ours, small breaks, opening of fissures and the lack of align-
ment of sculptural elements.
No conservation and restoration process has the objec-
tive of restoring the initial appearance of a piece, which is
impossible and against professional ethics. However, being
aware of the perspective of the future and the need for study
requires the Conservation and Restoration of works of art so
that they can have their full fruition. Given that the objective
of conscientious and respectful conservation and restoration

work must be an essentially conservative intervention, gov-
erned by criteria of minimum intervention and reversibility
of the materials and techniques utilised so as to slow down
the ageing process, restoring the work of art to chemical/
physical stability and the aesthetic harmony necessary for a
correct interpretation and reading of the artistic composition.
Given the immense quantity of pieces, the reduced time
and limited team2, it was decided to carry out the most urgent
operations, stabilising the pieces at risk, slowing the process
of degradation that some pieces showed, and re-establishing
their equilibrium so that they could be exhibited. It is hoped
that this will be on-going work, and it is hoped to conclude
some treatment processes which have been started and carry
out others which, albeit not urgent, are nonetheless essential.
N o t e s
1 The disinfestation was carried out by the company Rentokil, and monitored by
the Robinson Foundation and took place in 2009. This method consists of the
introduction of the pieces within a sealed atmosphere of bubbles with a con-
trolled atmosphere filled with nitrogen and carbon dioxide. It is a completely
safe and clean process, which leaves the objects disinfested, immaculate and
without any residues of any kind.2 Which involved the precious collaboration at the time of staff from the Sónia

The museological dimensions of the renovation of the Munic-
ipal Museum of Portalegre in 2012, resulted from a prior diag-
nosis which, one the path had been laid out and had been muse-
ographically stabilised, required a constant, but not opportunis-
tic, attitude of renovation, in accordance with the rhythms of the
Visitors and the needs for the affirmation of the memory of the
municipal community.
These diagnosed dimensions, to which many people con-
tributed in the discussions of the Museology group of the Rob-
inson Foundation, which consisted of António Camões Gouveia,
António Filipe Pimentel, António Viana, Graça Filipe and João
Carlos Brigola, were based on four pairs of key concepts: fruition
and interpretation; reserve and exhibition; religious establish-
ments and collectors; Portalegre and visitors.
Following the diagnosis, study and technical and object map-
ping, which is documented here and visible in the Museum-space,
an exhibition was mounted which corresponds to this, albeit a
phased one with distinct possibilities for its tuning and independ-
ent and future assessment.
Below is a more consolidated and clearer, but more complex
at the same time, description using referential texts, with com-
mentaries, of the aforementioned four pairs.

assets for the purposes of documentation, conservation, interpre-

Capítulo II. Regime geral dos museus portuguesesSecção II. Estudo e investigaçãoArtigo 8.º Estudo e investigaçãoO estudo e a investigação fundamentam as acções
A tentativa,

that has been constructed navigates within a relative stability of
knowledge, and it is always necessary to document more and in a
better way, and show its movable and immobilised form. It is here
that the tuning is established, which is one thing today but tomor-
row could be another, with spaces left free, with detachable and
removable moveable entities. But more has been done.
Space has been left for renovation, as is the case with the
interpretative receptive area, the Collector space and that reserved
for activities by the educational services, which wishes to extend
the age range and interests and not just be limited to “schools”.
In conformity and in a natural attitude a space for “con-
versation” is created - the cafeteria, with direct access from and
to the street, which can move towards a “non-public” evident
for a space-Museum. The clearly specialised attempt, within an
immediate access and a reception area, linked with the tempo-
rary exhibition area, where the realities of the local commu-
nity, that of Portalegre, may be found, but today and tomorrow,
approximations are closer to their memories, history and future
perspectives.

Reserve and exhibition
It is nowadays possible to state that the museum has been
transformed into an alter ego of the city, while that of the daily
urban has inversely tended to “musify itself”. In truth, the cul-
tural reality in which we have been constructed, has throughout
recent decades become progressively hostage to the exasperation
of symbolic and iconic values such as “patrimony”, “tourism” and
the “show” - recalling, once again, Guy Debord and Hal Foster—,
in a process where everything has been “patrimonialised”, every-
thing “touristified”, everything “mediatised”.
In this way, “museumania” will show itself ever more outside
of museums themselves (...).
We may however consider museums in a completely distinct
sense, that is, not as places of simulated entertainment, but rather
as “creative forgetfulness”, as Andreas Huyssen wrote; not as spaces
to “fill” with art pieces, but merely as “different forms of emptiness”
— taking up once again Robert Smithson’s proposal —, where each
creator and each visitor may design their own cognitive “map”2.
The collections of the Museum are extensive and very varied,
with many deficiencies in terms of conservation and others con-
cerning documentation (research). Whereas within this frame-
work the museological narrative does not wish to either run from
situations of deficit, which may be provocative and capable of gen-

erating individual or joint community action, or to ignore an inte-
gral part of the Museum, namely its reserves.
The reserves are a fundamental aspect of museological pro-
gramming within an attitude of on-going renovation resulting
from improvement in states of conservation, gradually achieved,
or the need to change, to recreate situations, to impose new gym-
nastics on those views that are loyal and sharpen those which are
sporadic Visitors.
In the Municipal Museum of Portalegre it is clear that the
relationship between reserve-exhibition is one of the variants
that is most useful to possibly create dynamisms in all the team in
carrying out and fulfilling its mission.

The Parties to this Convention agree to:
• Recognise that rights relating to cultural heritage are inher-
ent in the right to participate in cultural life, as defined in the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights;
• Recognise individual and collective responsibility towards
cultural heritage;
• Emphasise that the conservation of cultural heritage and its
sustainable use have human development and quality of life
as their goal;
• Take the necessary steps to apply the provisions of this Con-
vention concerning: the role of cultural heritage in the con-
struction of a peaceful and democratic society, and in the pro-
cesses of sustainable development and the promotion of cul-
tural diversity; greater synergy of competencies among all
the public, institutional and private actors concerned3.

If one wishes, in a few words, designing characterising the
entry of the objects which lead to the formation of the Collection
of the Municipal Museum we can use the pair of concepts which
are now in bloom: religious establishments and collectors.
In a 19th century period, and affirmed at the start and dur-
ing the 20th century, we find the Cistercian monastery of São Ber-
nardo, and the Franciscan convent of Santa Clara, with some
more pieces of a religious or para-religious, devotional or liturgi-
cal nature, with few possibilities to determine their origin.
They were grouped trying thus to create a narrative from
that world which is so sui generis and closed and from which they
have come from. Another time, further away, yet still nowa-
days under construction, the result of varied and dispersed atti-
tudes of different local collectors, willing to donate and hope for
exhibition.
If the former has provided a narrative unity, which is more
thematic, the pieces of the collectors have been allowed to flow in
space, finding themselves to be contiguous, without mixing, clas-
sifying or organising them chronologically or thematically.
As such a space has been created right at the entrance of the
Museum, as an important and renewable shop window of attitude
and sharing of cultural citizenship, a space dedicated to the Collec-
tor where one sets out incorporated pieces open to interventions
from future bequests.
The maintenance of the spatial organics by floors has facili-
tated this work, to allow the variations to be verified and allow the
Visitor isolated perusal of each one of the areas presenting each
one of these two exhibition embodiments.
Portalegre and visitors
Approaches close to the land and its resources tend to consti-
tute themselves as a stimulus for cultural diversity, as well as, in
the spatial proximity between different tourist, cultural and patri-

important part of museum visits, and in some cases represent a
significant percentage of its public. The recognition of the impor-

by cultural tourism and tourism stakeholders are nowadays aware
that the future of the tourist industry depends on the protection
and preservation of the environmental, patrimonial and cultural
resources of each region4.
The texts above have led this to successively rise to the top:
we are in a Municipal Museum and, therefore, Portalegre, for
those of Portalegre, and Portalegre for the Visitors, this has to
be, and it was intended to be so, the mark of all this rereading of
the building and the Collection of the Museum. The interpreta-
tive centre, located right in the reception area, will have as its pri-
mary function to make this Collection /municipal landscape rela-
tionship clear.

The works carried out sought to show the main features
of the building and get closer to its original construction.
The open, ample and luminous spaces, and the extended
volumes, were intended to provide major freedom of expres-
sion and open up ways of highlighting the pieces.
The renovation is inseparable from museography and
museology.
Working with the scientific coordination of the Rob-
inson Foundation, António Camões Gouveia with the sup-
port of Patrícia Monteiro, the conservation and restoration
team of the Foundation, principally Laura Portugal Romão,
in contact with the museum team, Sónia Alves, Margarida
Mendes Carvalho and António Sequeira, the distribution of
the various core areas and exhibitional groups was under-
taken, taking into account the different ambiences and “sce-
narios”. Then an essential division was carried out, with
some areas being darkened in order to better highlight, and
sanctify, some works and groups of pieces.
What was intended was that the museography would
allow itself to be held by the architecture of the building and
its relationship with the exterior. Thus the option was taken
to create an autonomous system of evolving construction. The
new system consists of support walls alongside the exterior
walls, which are always interrupted at the windows to create
reading nooks to hold what is present there. They also form
part of the system and other walls, based on both of the cen-
tral walls of the building, in the longitudinal sense, emphasis-
ing the reading of the spatial volumes in this direction.
The exhibitional walls have a lower height on the right
side of the spaces, and show the meeting of the vertical
planes with the building’s ceilings, in order to provide more
autonomy for the building, which functions as an omnipres-
ent envelope1.

The entry to the floors, through the central staircase
which defines the transversal axis of the building, provides
a surprise effect of the immediate taking in of most of the
pieces of the collections, suitably hierarchised through their
distribution and lighting.
The points of view between the exhibitional supports
awaken one’s curiosity to peruse.
Dense areas have been created and others in which the
pieces are spaced between themselves, in an effect of plen-
itude and emptiness, of Baroque inspiration, characteristic
of a large part of the holdings of the museum.
The use of exhibitional supports with a very clear design
has been chosen, as has already been mentioned, involving
plinths and simple glass panes, painted in suave colours, by
floor, deliberately discrete in such a way as to show off the
quality of the pieces.
Some of the details and finishings of the supports were
thought of so as to promote lightness of expression and
thus contribute to the enrichment of the objects which they
serve. The ends of the walls and the platform show off the
size, the robustness and the beauty of the pieces.
The visit starts on the ground floor, by the reception
and in the lateral row of the main entrance, by the interpre-
tative centre, around the image of the historical centre. It

tells the history of the museum and its birth, which in part
is intertwined with the history of the city itself, and thus
contextualises the route through the exhibition.
On the other side, to the east and visible from the
entrance, is the area given over to the collector and the
museum donations, enabling the pieces being highlighted
to be rotated, providing a taster for the visit and showing
the origins of the catalogue. A support wall in the entrance
row and a plinth support the pieces on display.
The permanent exhibition is distributed throughout
two main floors, with the sacred images originating from
the convents and churches of the city on the first floor and
the furniture and mobile arts on the second floor.
It was decided to emphasise the more emblematic
pieces of the core areas by placing them in the central areas
of the floors, by the entrance, as is the case with the trip-
tych from the Convent of Santa Clara and the Pietá from
the Convent of São Bernardo on the first floor, or also
the Indio-Portuguese counter from the collection of Dr.
José d’Andrade Sequeira and the still-life with birds, from
Jean-Baptiste Weenix, on the second floor. Rows were
also established with groups of major import placed at the
ends, so as to promote their visibility. Objects were con-
centrated, arranging them scenically in the space to high-
light their reading.
On the first floor, the sacred images are presented in a
darkened setting, where the scenic lighting contributes to
creating moments of exaltation within a serene ambience,
in which the pieces stand out.
Paintings are always hung on support walls alongside
existing walls. Statues on plinths are distributed at various
heights and in groups. The furniture is placed on platforms,

their simple beauty, as is the case with the set of altar columns
alongside the organ from Santa Clara.
At the access to the lift, off the route, a piece being
restored calls attention to the conservation aspects.
On the second floor dedicated to the furniture and mobile
arts the atmosphere is clear, the shutters are open, with the
full roofing viewed through the ceilings and the skylight and
the letting in of some natural light, to surround the furniture,
the faience, the porcelain and the paintings.
After the entrance, which constitutes an introduction to
the collections to be visited, one can see in the central body
of the room and on both sides, on platforms the furniture
arranged according to type, commodes, and tables and can-
apés in a central double row, and chairs along the longitudi-
nal walls.
Paintings are hung on the walls around the perimeter of
the floors. At the ends of the rooms and distributed in a trans-
versal sense, are on one side the collection of ratinhos plates
and faience, which closes the building, and on the other, in

glass show cases on the walls, the collections of porcelain
cups and fans; the collection of snuff boxes is shown in an
extensive set of two lines of horizontal glass show cases. On
that side a core of paintings has been created of Portalegre
which includes in the centre the presentation of the carpets
from Arroiolos.
The colours used are serene, ivory and grey, sometimes
to open up the tones of the statuary, of gold and silver, some-
times to emphasise the materials of the objects and the
crockery.
In the temporary exhibition room, exhibition walls made
up of movable panels allow for different configurations.
The first exhibition, on the painters of Portalegre, shows
the themed painting filling the walls, with an essentially aes-
thetic layout, which seeks to celebrate the city.
On the ground floor, near the interpretative centre, the
first automobile to circulate in Portalegre has been placed,
a piece cherished in the city and which can be viewed from
the entrance through the glass doors, in a visually impor-
tant axis.
The courtyard, a decompression space, has cannon balls,
from the museum’s collection, and a stone fountain.
The Gothic window originating from the convent of
Santa Clara, formerly housed in the courtyard of the museum,
is now shown in its initial context, in an open space in the
enclosure of this convent.
The furniture of the shop and the cafeteria, is sometimes
solid and painted in the colours of the construction, in grey or
ochre, sometimes in glass and steel with a clean expression to
form an extension of the exhibition supports.
The signage is included in this set using the same lan-
guage, transparent on the glass doors, or on coloured back-
grounds on the walls in the exhibition.

The Municipal Museum of Portalegre
The Municipal Museum, located in the 16th century former seminary building 50 years after its inau‑guration, needed remodelling given its signs of the passing of time, its construction and developments in the concepts of museum exhibiting.Having updated its programme and set down the general guidelines for the works, the heritage build‑ing was repaired in line with its original values, seeking to provide better conditions for the conser‑vation of the building and the pieces to be exhibited, and with the aim of improving the collections. The complete collection was studied, inventoried and processed. Its restoration and conservation was started.Museology assessed and drew up its diagnostics and guidelines, and museography interpreted and thus stabilised the works. The original impetus for the Mu‑seum ‑ the Religious Establishments and their Collec‑tors – has now been reinterpreted to better demon‑strate the history of the Museum and its pieces.Temporary exhibitions now form part of the pro‑gramming of the Museum, which the new Public Assistance and Educational Services, in their new areas, support and revitalise.
