New Trends UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH

I WONDER WHY THERE ARE SO MANY TEACHERS THAT DON’T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT A SO-IMPORTANT RESEARCH PROJECT!

The accelerated growth of knowledge nowadays made

traditional teaching based exclusively on oral transmission

of information impractical. In many disciplines it is no

longer possible to transmit all the relevant contents, and

as knowledge is never finished, much of what students

need is how to make the rest of his knowledge be discov-

ered. It is said that Undergraduate Research Projects are

important because they increase the critical sense and

deep the pre-knowledge of some students. However, at

UNEB- Campus II, more precisely in its English Graduation

Course, it is necessary to ask: How many Undergraduate

Research Projects are produced and disseminated by the

English Professors? Are you English students stimulated to

do any kind of Undergraduate Research by any of those

Professors? See more on page 4.

Among several compo-nents considered important for learning foreign languages, we can highlight, for example, grammar skills, communication and linguis-tics studies. However, cultural ac-quaintance – the knowledge of the conventions, customs, beliefs and meaning systems of a given coun-try – is considered essential for learning foreign languages, and many teachers have been intended to incorporate it into their room. In theory, there is a concern regard-ing the contribution and integration of teaching culture in English classes, once English language is not just a production of speeches based on syntactic structures, vo-cabulary studies and phrases in isolation, but mainly to incorporate some cultural elements that are intertwined with the language itself.

Within the “New Trends” includes the study of transversal themes. According to the PCNs (Parâmetros Curriculares Na-cionais), those themes are defined as a set of issues, different in na-ture, of conventional areas such as Drugs, Relationship, Prejudice, Ethics, Environment, Cultural Plu-rality, Health, Sexual Orientation, Work and Consumption, in order to discuss the ethical meaning of hu-man coexistence in their relation-

ships with many dimensions of so-cial life.

Beverly Hills 90210, as known as Barrados no Baile in Brazil, is a true landmark in the history of television series that has reached perfection with its core audience, the teenagers, with a rebellious and innovative design. This teenage drama series begins with the Walsh family moving from the quiet Minnesota to the trendy Beverly Hills, showing the experi-ences, difficulties and achieve-ments of the twins Brandon and Brenda Walsh. From the time at West Beverly High until graduating from college, we can “live” the sto-ries of the Walsh twins and their

best friends Kelly, Steve, Dylan, Andrea, David and Donna, and also the people around them. While they follow different paths and meet new people, they always keep a strong friendship bond ex-cept when it comes to dating. In addition to chronicling the friend-ships and romantic relationships of a group of close-knit teenagers, the show also addressed numerous topical issues including date rape, alcoholism, domestic violence, gay rights, gay parenting, drug abuse, teenage suicide, AIDS, teenage pregnancy, bulimia and abortion. Working with video in the classroom can be considered one of the most effective methods in teaching English as a Foreign Lan-guage to both teenagers and adults alike. Considering that American TV Series are authentic cultural materials able to offer Eng-lish teachers and their students an approach to American reality, I suggest Beverly Hills 90210 to be worked in the English language classroom, justifying myself by the need to promote possible changes to English language teaching, and because it has been given me new dimensions and ways to the learn-ing process of my students in-cludes transversal themes, not just grammar and/or structural issues.

Have you ever heard the expression “Emotional Intelli-gence”? Since about 4, 5 years ago this subject was discussed by an American: Daniel Goleman. He sold a lot of books with the title: Emotional Intelli-gence-The theory that redefines what is an intelligent person. So, everybody thought He discovered it. But this interesting search was

developed by a Brazilian Professor: the PhD Luiz Machado. He teaches at UNICAMP and use to write/study about the children behavior trying to discovery what happens with the human brain. But what is Emo-tional Intelligence? This is an affective attitude and can be defined like a way to respect the other (people). We can improve this attitudes everyday and It

is divided in four aspects: self conscience, self-control, social conscience and relationship administration. So, how it can be possible? How to practice the Emotional Intelligence? The basic point is: take care and respect the people, nobody is better than one. It means learning to associate with the others. It can happen in the class-room too and to reinforce, we can practice it through the Multiple Intelligence. Do you know what Multiple Intelligence is? It is a methodology discovered by a scientist called Howard Gardner that named several ways of learning process: logic-mathematics, spacial, visual, cinestesic, etc.What it means? There are students that learn the school subjects watching movies, listening to music, writing, etc. These activities can stimulate the student to learn more easily. If you want smart students…try to innovate in the class-room, avoid to make works individual all the time, ok?

Brazilian Graduation Courses have their rules estab-lished by Law Nº 9.394 from De-cember 20th, 1996, called Lei de Diretrizes e Bases da Educação Nacional (LDB). This law stipu-lates in its Article 43 that a graduation course aims, among other activities to stimulate the creation and development of cultural and scientific spirit of reflective thinking, encourage research work and scientific, etc.

Researches allow the construction and trans-mission of new knowl-edge, in a new way, with-out repeating what has already been discovered and written earlier by an-other researchers. It is through the research activ-ity that you can build knowledge, and this is directly linked to learning.

It is believed that by learning the human beings appropriate the knowledge and build their own parameters, not mak-ing more use of memoriza-tion that serves only to reproduce others' ideas.

The researc h means search, inquiry and investigation. Searching is to produce knowledge, building knowledge, and those considerations mean that re-search is fundamental to contrib-ute to the advancement of sci-ence, because of their constant search for new discoveries.

The recognition of the importance of research inside the university context allows some universities to offer under-graduate research scholarships to undergraduates who wish to perform such work. An example of such institutions is UNEB – Universidade do Estado da Ba-hia – which has created many undergraduate research pro-

grams providing thousands scholarships for undergraduate students. The objective of those programs is to integrate teaching and research, to understand that both provide a condition that develops teaching and ability to think.

The undergraduate re-search programs also provide theoretical background neces-sary to perform systematically all kinds of research, contributing to the development of the student's ability to produce different kinds of scientific research. And as methodology can be described as the "study of the method for seeking certain knowledge, sci-entific methodology has several goals, such as: distinguishing science from other forms of ob-taining knowledge; developing in the researcher an investigative attitude; establishing relation-

ships between existing knowledge with the one studied; guiding and preparing scientific investigations; developing critical thinking, etc.

The first sentence I heard after “Be Welcome to UNEB” was “you need to be teachers-researchers, so you can know the needs of the students. Now I real-

ize this speech reproduced by several teachers was nothing but a meaningless sentence. It is believed that there should be incen-tives for developing re-search and knowledge to produce articles for publi-cation, but this does not happen in the English Course at UNEB Campus II. And what solidifies this revolt is the fact that there are several projects of un-dergraduate research in the Portuguese and His-tory courses at UNEB Campus II, while no Eng-lish teacher volunteers to develop projects of such size. Of course we cannot just blame the teachers be-cause we have part of the blame too, perhaps the teacher is one who must figure out which student best fits to your project and then call him to do a

undergraduate research. Plus, it was supposed to the monograph guider to propose a undergradu-ate research project for his stu-dent on the theme they both are researching.

We students of English are just guinea pigs unmotivated by the flowchart of UNEB Campus II, leaving graduation with a big hole in teacher education. We must develop autonomy within the course and give the teachers pos-sible corrections and criticism, thus allowing us the right to fulfill our role as agents and transform-ing society.

THINGS YOU CAN DO IN CLASS: Teaching English with songs—An easy lesson Plan.

By Emile Uise

CONTENT: Practice of pronunciation, listening com-prehension and linguistic native varieties (idiomatic, slang and colloquialisms, contractions). RESOURCES USED: • Copies of lyrics • Stereo • CD •Whiteboard marker

METHODOLOGICAL PROCEDURE: 1. The teacher will begin the lesson by putting the song "I Wanna Know What Love is" (sung by Mariah Carey or other song chosen) and will ask the students to close their eyes in order to focus on the hearing of the song.

2. Then the educator will invite the students to comment on what they think the song talks about.

3. After stimulating the ability to make inferences, the educator will give to students envelopes containing sentences of song cut into strips and will ask them to organize such sentences as they listen it again. If necessary, the teacher must repeat the song until all of the class has finished the activity.

4. The teacher will continue the class, correcting the activity and taking away the doubts about intonation and pronunciation highlighted by the students.

5. With the sentences already organized, the teacher will ask the students to try to analyze the lyrics by paying attention to the slang and colloquialisms, contractions, in order to get a general understanding of the lyrics.

GOALS: • Observe carefully the pronunciation and intonation of words in a more meaningful and pleasant way;

• Promote entertainment and a well-being climate, propitious to learning in the classroom;

• Make possible the interpretation of lyrics, reviewing the grammar structures discussed in previous classes, as well as improve in students the ability to make inferences;

• Understand the linguistic varieties such as native idioms, slang and colloquialisms present in songs.

Teaching English in schools has be-come a real challenge, since there are many obstacles that this language has to face within

the school curriculum, such as the excessive number of students in the classroom; lack of appropriate teaching materials and books, or

even the complete absence of them; reduced working hours and unattractive and obsolete methods that are put in practice by teachers of

such component. This way, students of schools (mostly

the public ones) usually feel no motivation to

learn the English language, since they don't have the opportunity to interpret and express them-selves through it, because when they are face to

face with fully traditional teaching methods – which contents are organized emphasizing only grammatical structures with the practice

of translation exercises, copy and repetition – the students end up by seeing no meaning in learning something boring and out of context.

The hypothesis that explain the motive(s) of the failure in the process of teaching-learning of that language in public schools are

many, however, there is no reason to justify the lack of application of dynamic or leisure activities in the classroom, after all, they don't require

great resources or sophisticated technologies but differentiated attitudes and above all, the teachers must have one thing called willing of

changing. And as a suggestion to minimize or

even solve some problems that unfortunately

help to compose the panorama in which the teaching of English language is immersed, music comes out as a powerful educational tool, which

provides a significant learning because it cooper-

ates with the improvement of the four language

skills (listening comprehension, written produc-tion, reading and oral comprehension) , besides, it takes the student to a better understanding

of their role as citizens which are able to inter-act with other cultures and ways of acting and thinking.

For some, music is the art of combin-ing sounds in order to please our ears. For oth-ers, music is any set of sounds. There are many

definitions for it, however, about one thing we can be pretty sure: the music is an element pre-sent at every moment of our life, since the lulla-

bies until the funeral marches. This way, music has much influence in the human beings’ life, after all, it has the power of liberate emotions

along the experiences lived, being used also in therapeutic treatments in therapy with people who have autism and others psychological disor-

ders. According to GAINZA (1998), “music is an element of essential importance, because it

moves, mobilizes and therefore contributes to the

changing and development of the individual". Music is an authentic material which has

an easy access and moreover, it is still possible to

highlight many others advantages that a teacher may obtain by using the songs as an ally in English classes such as:

1- To promote a better interaction between teacher and students by creating a relaxed, friendly and low stress place which is highly benefic for the learning

of a language;

2-To develop the sensitivity and creative skills in the classroom, improving the logical argumentation,

memory and concentration;

3- To stimulate the learning of a language in a more

natural way and with better assimilation;

4-To change the contents to be learned into more

comprehensible and significant ones;

5- To promote an unconscious way of learning a

language;

6- To realize the linguistic varieties, such as native

expressions, slang and colloquialisms that can be

found in the songs;

7- To educate our ears in order to listen to the correct words pronunciation carefully and in a

pleasant way;

However it is necessary to emphasize that the essential step, before selecting the songs to be worked in the classroom, is to define the

goals that you want to achieve with this practice, taking into account the syllabus and also the lin-guistics and world knowledge that the class has

already, aiming to ensure the effective participation of students, as well as the autonomy of them.

LOVE, FAMILY AND SOCIAL LIFE This is the year for new awakenings. Often, the Aquarian avoids romantic or intimate relationships on a long term level in favor of independence. Thanks to the movement of Neptune in the Aquarius 2011 yearly horo-scope, your sensitive nature will long for the life lessons a commitment to love can bring. This means that the relationships you already foster will grow more deep and meaningful. Venus will encourage you to feast on pleas-ure, within this new form of intimacy. Come fall, the ability to open your heart to for-ever is strong. Do not be afraid to take risks with your heart during this time, Aquarius. It might be uncomfort-able to open yourself to the probing interests of another but it’s time. Your peaceful nature this year will aid in your ability to achieve this transition into togetherness.

EDUCATION AND TRAVELING

Your desire for learning remains strong in the Aquarius 2011 yearly horoscope. However, with the in-put of Neptune, you fear the ability to sustain the re-sources to explore and learn without an immediate re-ward. As the Aquarius 2011 yearly horoscope is the year of building towards success, take it slow. Travel simply. Explore the world simply. Take each day simply. Your ability to appreciate the finer aspects of knowledge will fill your life with riches.

CAREER AND INCOME

In the Aquarius 2011 yearly horoscope, this is the year of past labor resulting in fruition. The tree will not sprout up into a majestic oak this year, but the sapling will poke out of the ground. The en-deavor you have working for will start to come to life or die altogether. Either way, there is the certainly of closure. If old projects fade away, it just leaves the landscape fresh for new adventures. Start new projects at the end of Spring or get ready to nurture the one that has just begun to grow. Remember, weeds can kill what you are trying to grow. Neptune still hovers in your house of money this year. Out with the old, in with the new. Close out lingering debts, difficulties and problems to make way for future productiv-ity.

HEALTH A peaceful mind equals a peaceful body. As your world begins to even itself out, you will feel the effects of your energy returning. You will feel a direct correlation between vitality and internal progress. Allow this health to fill you, continuing to build on what’s working and re-moving what is not. There is no room for worry for Aquarius 2011, as the peaceful state of your mind will not tolerate such a
