The work of Master Gilberto Aceves Navarro has already overcome
the trial of time, critique and contemplation. Today, in Mexico and
all over the world, his work is considered as an important marker in
the history of Mexican visual arts, which relates to our identity, our
evolution. His work represents the cultural expression of a country
having Mesoamerican and western European roots.
The work we present today, which Master Aceves Navarro prepared
and created in our own Guadalajara in the year 2011, represents
the richness of creation, the proud spirit and the passion for one
vocation, for writing and reflection on our times, looking into the
past and drawing on more contemporary processes and media to
portray the present and envisage the future.
The work of Master Aceves Navarro, his plastic excellence and his
undoubted transcendence in time resembles the mission of our
firm, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary. Since our founda-
tion, we have focused on providing top quality, personalized legal
services to our clients, with the tradition of the highest standards
in our profession and with the vitality of a dynamic and innova-

tive organization. All our team members work with enthusiasm to
serve our clients, whose preference has allowed us to continue our
strive for progress and professional transcendence, looking always
towards the future without forgetting our past. Our first decade
makes us very proud and we feel the best way to celebrate it is by
contributing towards the publication of this book.
For all of this, sponsoring the printed work you now have in your
hands resulted in a wonderful joint effort. We are certain this mate-
rial will make you connect with the most profound characteristics of
our identity, with our spirit that makes us look beyond what we think
is possible, with the magic that characterizes our art, our culture,
our Mexico, with what we are today and what we seek, all of us, for
our future. Intellectual curiosity is a great source of inspiration in
both visual arts and law and both areas evolve continuously in the
existence of humankind. Our support to this exhibition is an expres-
sion of this conviction.
To all our clients and friends, thank you for your preference
during these first ten years.

a poco o a dentelladas feroces, colmarlo.
Institute of Mexican-American cultural exchange en Los Angeles, Ca-

Dibujen
cosas nuevas”.
Enrique Assad Lara, Carlos Orozco Romero, Isidoro Ocampo, Agustín
Lazo, Raúl Anguiano, Nacho Aguirre...” Luchador Gilberto Aceves
de mi vida. Puedo concebir con mayor facilidad y mayor amplitud;

Las mismas manos in-

Mensajeros, informantes, tlacuilos, van y vienen incansables y

como cotaras*, que así se dice lo que se calzan;

32 ballesteros, 110 marineros y unos 200 indios y negros
de auxiliares de la tropa. Llevaban 32 caballos, 10 caño-
nes de bronce y 4 falconetes. Por capitanes iban Alonso
Hernández de Portocarrero, Alonso de Ávila, Diego de Or-
daz, Francisco de Montejo, Francisco de Morla, Francisco
iii
dos libras de pólvora de arcabuz de seis as y as;
tercio; por la de los muñones, tres diámetros;

¿Acaso no pudo identifi-

go: los caballos.

Gilberto Aceves Navarro usually works with series and recur-
ring to interpretations of works and artists, modifying sup-
ports, formats and techniques; and notwithstanding his cu-
rious and inquisitive gaze, reading and its representations. Now he
amazes us with a visit to a remote vision: the ruthless encounter be-
tween two worlds, the native in its American vastness, and the Medi-
terranean in its Spaniard version. The motivations he seeks are visual
and conceptual at the same time: the disembarking of horses, the
almost esoteric irruption, and the perverse grace of the Iberian con-
tact with the fat totonacs in the episode of Zempoala. It is hard to find
a theme more inclined to figuration. However, our artist avoids the
temptation of painting precisely that, venturing into other densities,
those that confront the unknown, because in the native’s eye, horses
do not exist and maybe even suggests the mixture of the centaur or
the deformation of the deer, and in the forging of quarrels between
original peoples, passions (revenge, greed) will build their fortune and

wealth. In both cases, chance will take over and the painter-herme-
neutic will try to calculate it at zero, providing us hints of his macular
signs, indications of his bookish findings. And because that is how
things are, I shall begin my own journey following such footprints and
aggravations, although in my belief: “One should always apologize
when talking about painting. But there are great reasons not to keep
quiet. All the arts live through words”. 1
As of 1521 when the clash of the bellicose combat decreases and
the cruel spiritual confrontation actually begins, missionaries chose
to regulate the view of the past and strived to document the knowl-
edge of the pre-Hispanic society through Latin writing, and also
turning to the eloquence of drawing. The same indigenous hands
summarized a significant part of such vast information originating
from codex and several Mexica annals in the Maritense Codex,
where those who wrote by painting, were defined as follows:

The prophecies and omens will be fulfilled, and in that realiza-
tion of the myth, a metaphysical order materialized in the ge-
nealogy of power would vanish. Torn to pieces, the sun would
hide only to let another reigning celestial body take its place,
and with no modesty, would show its infinite power; a bunch of
wiles and calculations, detonator of long-incubated malicious-
ness among indigenous people, a tide of sick beings deter-
mined to hatch their epidemics and who, upon returning to the
Atlantic would annihilate the natives, teules3, dressed in quiv-
ers made of iron and horror, sowers of death when brandishing
their swords and firing their muskets, and, worst of all, covered
with crosses and devoted to a tortured god. In spite of the leg-
end, a surprise built on its means of locomotion, sheltered such
long-awaited visitors: the novelty of an enormous deer that,
with the passage of time, would lose its centaur condition and
would be named horse, without antlers.

Messengers, informants, tlacuilos4 , come and go tireless and
amazed between the coast and the center of the empire, from the
coastline to the marsh bed they bring news about the plans, watch
the end of an era, describe the newcomers with magical tints: they
fear them and in that religious panic, they shyly desire the proph-
ecy to become true, the force of the oracle to materialize in its hor-
ror. The Huyetlatonai5 does not give up, he insists on persuading
them, he celebrates them in the distance with gifts, he invites them
to retreat; he wants to stop the promises and halt the omens, he
awaits and trusts in the error of the priests, he would like to plant
doubt in the haruspices. Forebodings do not answer to the will
of men, even if they are anointed rulers enthroned in altars, they
proceed ruthlessly, they know they are announcements and maybe
even premonitions. The Caribbean, Cuba, Yucatán and Cozumel,

initiation headed for Mexico-Tenochtitlán: the reality of the myth.

The day will come when the augury will break through and it will be exactly on November 8, 1519, when the smoky faces will be seen, with-
out needing obsidian or quicksilver mirrors, two worlds which we will never understand on what they based their classification of New and
Old. They will look at their faces and even dare to touch each other, in order to corroborate their humanity through that test of touch. The
ceremonies take place and the encounter is near. An interested witness6 will offer us, from his feverish gaze, a story, painting by painting:
As we approached México, where there were other turrets, the great
Moctezuma dismounted from the bier and the great caciques led
him by the arm, under an incredibly rich canopy, and the color of
the green feathers with great gold ornaments, with a lot of silver em-
broidery and pearls and chalchiuis stones , that hung from a kind of
effacements, there was a lot to see in that. And the great Moctezuma
was richly dressed, according to tradition and was wearing a kind of
cotaras* , that is how they call their shoes; soles made of gold and
valuable stones over them; and the four men who led him by the arm
wore rich, traditional costumes, which they seemed to have with them
on the road to enter with their lord, who did not wear the costumes
with which they welcomed us and there were, without those four men,
four other large caciques that had the bier over their heads and many
others who came before the great Moctezuma, clearing the ground he
would walk upon and laying shrouds so he would not step on the soil.
None of such men even dared to look him in the eye, but had their eyes
downcast and acted with a lot of respect, except for the four men, his
nephews, who led him by the arm. And as Cortes saw and understood
and was told the great Moctezuma was coming, he dismounted his
horse and as he approached Moctezuma, great respects were paid.

The conqueror from Estremadura will offer his version of the encounter in the Segunda carta de Relación (October 30, 1520), where he will insist on the need of protect-ing himself, for which he made four brigantines “that could throw three hundred men on the ground and carry the horses each time we wanted”. As time passed, brother Francisco de Aguilar, first conqueror and grocer and later, a professed priest of the order of the preachers (Santo Domingo), would offer his version of the events: “Walking further ahead, when the man Cortés was arriving, he dismounted from the horse he was riding, and Moctezuma got up and put gold and stone necklaces around the captain’s neck, and Cortés threw around his neck a necklace made from daisies (pearls), and very politely welcomed him, saying that he was home; and the captain thanked him for such a warm welcome and little by little we came into a large patio with a large circuit”: Relación breve de la conquista de la Nueva España (1559-1571). Upon the author’s death, the manuscript came to the hands of the Viceroy of New Spain and Archbishop of Mexico Pedro Moya de Contreras who later it gave it to Phillip II as a gift. The document is kept bound with other novo-Hispanic papers of the XVI century in the Royal Library of San Lorenzo of the Escorial. The fire of June 7, 1671 did not affect it and it survived intact. Falconets range from a 2 pound bullet to a 4
pound bullet, and 6 stone bullet. They have 30
to 34 diameters from the muzzle in length; the
metal is distributed as follows: in the butt, three
diameters one eighth of reinforcement to the
touchhole, and in the front, in the molding of
the trunnions, two diameters and four fifths; in
the neck, two diameters. There are other rein-
forced falconets, that have three diameters and
one third around the butt; in front of the molding
of the trunnions two diameters and four fifths; in
the neck, two. In Malaga certain 3 pound bullet
falconets were tested: on the first shot, with two
pounds of gunpowder of harquebus of six ace and

the third with three. The first shot, with the first

pound bullet falconets are 32 diameters long
from the muzzle and two thirds of their diameter:
they have the trunnions fixed at 13 diameters and
a half from the muzzle, which are thick in the part
they adjust into the piece, a little more than their
diameter and at the top like their diameter; the
first molding is fixed at 7 diameters, and a sixth
of its diameter the molding of these trunnions is
fixed at the root thereof; the metal is distributed:
in the butt, barely three diameters and a half; for
the first molding, three diameters and one third;
for the trunnions, three diameters; for the neck,
two. They weigh 14 quintals, and will go out at
466 pounds in weight.

As evidenced by the list of equipment and troops
that integrated the expedition of the military from Es-
tremadura, goods and arms were scarce and cannot,
not even in the most delirious scenario of interpreta-
tion, originate the Spanish victory. It must be situ-
ated in a different logic of analysis, where the medi-
cal theme becomes crucial. The key text to establish
the contagious diseases that existed in Spain, which
could be responsible for American epidemics, is the
Sevillana Medicina by Juan de Aviñón8, a converted
Jew born Moses ben Samuel de Roquemaure, who
arrived in Seville as the Archbishop’s doctor. His work
was edited in 1545, a century after it was written, by
the famous physician from Andalucía Nicolás B. Mo-

Juan de Aviñón mentions in the prologue that it composed it in 1418, among other reasons, by order of the Archbishop of Seville . The best known version is the re-edition by Enrique Rasco in 1885 (Seville). There is a modern print (2000) with analysis, introduction, edition, version and note by José Mondéjar, Madrid, Arco/Libro, 553pp.9 There is a wonderful version by María Teresa Herrera: Menor daño de la medicina de Alfonso Chirino, edition, critic and glossary, Salamanca, Ediciones Universidad de Salamanca, 1973, 328pp. It mentions other diseases as characteristic of the Spanish Renaissance: tertian fever, spitting blood, asthma, colic pain, spasmodic affections, renal colic, distillation and putrid fevers.10 For context information see, Guerra, Francisco: “Origen de las epidemias en la conquista de América”, in Quinto centenario, Madrid, Universidad Complutense, núm. 14, 1988, p.43-51. To have an approximate idea of the “pathogen genocide” it is sufficient to review the author’s figures, who records a novo-Hispanic population of around 25 million inhabitants in 1519 and a dramatic decrease to 1,075,000 in 1605.
of the diseases existing in this city) (p.33-38), he
exposes chronologically those he observed in Se-
ville between 1391 and 1420 (although, as the au-
thor remembers, it was “a good year of bread and
wine”). They were: malaria, small pox, spotted fever,
measles, tuberculosis and bubonic plague. He also
points out the existence of dysentery, conjunctivi-
tis, redness of the sick eye and typhoid fever. And if
this was not enough, the physician himself indicates
the devastating presence of a flu epidemic in 1405,
most likely, swine flu. Another late impression (1505)
of Menor daño de la medicina by Alfonso Chirin9,
a converted Jew native of Cuenca and John the II’s
physician, classifies other sicknesses and pathogens:
leprosy, scabies, ringworm, tuberculosis, pestilence
fevers and syphilis or nasty sores10.
Gilberto Aceves NAvArroLa Conquista 36
Gilberto Aceves Navarro transcends the anecdote, refuses to
express the exact moment of the taxonomic definition: the dis-
covery of horses. It works like this, as there was no concept
to describe such being in particular, the equine, the gradual
and progressive understanding of such live reality manifests
more than with just the organs of sight, with the fingertips.
Interior insight, the Leonardian la cosa mentale, that little by
little proposes a space and volume that dwells in it. The spots
will then be the recognition mechanisms the artist will use to
appropriate the surface where a composition that insists on
being denied will develop. A negative affirmation could be ad-
duced: knowledge by contradiction. Opposites like frontiers
and limits, material and chromatic invasions that become dis-
tant from the subjects who used to ride and drive them. Fea-
tures and gestures incapable – on their own – of establishing
iv
identity signs. The canvas does not apprehend a plot, the his-
tory changes in a sequential level: the animals lose sharpness,
they become part of the atmosphere; and in a system of simul-
taneous dimensions: gyroscopic view that recoups information,
textures, densities and rhythms, of a being observed in pano-
ptic, the object of continuous re-composition is observed from
very different angles without the eye resting or reposing. Life
surges while what we perceive is fixed in the retina: the subject
as donor of sense.
Such plastic movements blend with a palette that energetically
managed, goes up and down the color scales. Never is there
any intent to make the shades turn the traces believable, which
escaping, refuse to reel off scenes. Ultimately, they will be de-
cipherable trough joint reading. Giant sketch; endless, that

weaves, sequence by sequence, a kind of story board. The
witnesses of the apparitions of the quadruped design it
to the best of their knowledge and understanding; which
means that there is no defined reality called “horse”, but
rather a substance that materializes in the plural, they are
a kind of herd, before which each informant emphasizes
a specific point, without the sum of “viewers” making a
model. Umberto Eco thinks about these cognitive phe-
nomena when he proposes the hypothesis that there is
“a kind of unconditional petition on behalf of semiotics
which would require that the entire culture be studied as a
phenomenon of communication”11. And in this prodigious
series of paintings the expression (the communication) oc-
curs without the intervention of words, gloating on the
formal signs of painting.
Eco disintegrates this paradox by analyzing two exam-
ples in which one individual and his community face a
phenomenon unknown until the date it happened, and
consequently, how to appreciate the process of forma-
tion of the contents or concepts of such “apparitions”. In
the first case, it concerns the platypus of the zoos of the
late XVIII century and a significant part of the XIX century
and Kant, who probably never knew of the animal since
he passed away in 1804, a long time before the science
school agreed on its classification. The second case con-
cerns horses, the Aztecs and their governor Moctezuma, who had
never seen such animals, until the turning point that the arrival of
the Spanish conquerors represented12. The philosopher affirms
that upon seeing the original phenomenon (the platypus or the
horses), the subjects develop a Cognitive Type (CT). It is some-
thing similar to a morphological scheme, like a tridimensional
model, capable of including other characteristics such as odor,
sound (neigh), size, form or even certain attributes (ability to be
ridden, for instance). Through the CT, individuals are able to rec-
ognize other specimens of the same phenomenon that they have
not seen. They have a functional parameter or paradigm through
which they compare and collate occurrences-apparitions-irrup-
tions. This identification model rests on registered evident fac-
tors in the direct perception, avoiding the transcendentalism
typical of essences and/or substances.
Gilberto Aceves NAvArroLa Conquista39
However, the CT created during the first contact or perception is not
common to all speakers: it derives from a particular experience and mani-
fests an orderly apprehension of the witness; it is by nature singular and
private. When the Aztecs exchange points of view, based on their experi-
ences about horses, areas of consensus are gradually established. The
first collective interpretations emerge, which are close to a definition. Eco
calls this sum Nuclear Content (NC), pointing out that while the CT is
private the NC is public. In his respect, the NC is the way we inter-sub-
jectively establish the features that form the CT. This way, the NC can be
transmitted, creating CT in persons that have not had any perception of
the relevant object. Wasn’t Moctezuma able to identify the horses the first
time he saw them thanks to the information provided by his emissaries?
In any case, both epistemic devices are negotiable at first, because they
depend structurally on a concrete culture and its specific circumstances.
Art of spectral presences, game of mirrors, of duplicity and inversion of
movement, of a mixture of planes and figures, which provides a progres-
sive rationality in relation with the finding; the horses. Aceves Navarro
walks the same path as Eco, but as opposed to him, Aceves Navarro
uses other means, stopping in direct perception and saving the words
or substituting them with images. Regardless, the recently discovered
silhouettes appear as eaters of space. A new pictorial territoriality
is suggested: between the figurative and the abstract, the
movement of things-beings-organisms-objects triumphs,
subject of the most discrete representation. As in reality,
the painted horses acquire flesh and blood, they become
terrestrial, and when they loose their magical character,
they become recognizable, just like, with distress, the au-
thor shares with us13:

The horses die. By virtue of this, they allow us to unveil and know them.
Aceves Navarro is well aware, he twists them, sinks his teeth into them, dis-
sects them and divests them from their mystic aura. Having lost their spirit,
they become paintable. The luxury of the slaughter.
…each day our strength diminished and Mexi-
cans’ strength grew, we saw a lot of our men dead

looked death in the eye, […] and Cortés and all our

were more unattended […] And in such manner, a
multitude of Mexicans charge to remove the bridge

Susan Stong reminds us that: “For the painter there are two
principal affirmations in this reduced field of verbal expres-
sion. The painter assures paintings need no ‘explanations’.
The painter explains that paintings should be considered,
properly, as ‘things’14. Perhaps one of the most outstanding
characteristics of Aceves Navarro’s artistic work consists in its
formal audacity, a daring that sinks its roots in an uncommon
culture. In the series dedicated to the disembarking of the
deer converted into horses, we can perceive, even if furtively,
a tribute to the colorful indigenous painting: on one hand, the
recourse to an innovative color spectrum15, which is strident
sometimes and has complete pigmentations, as if dealing
with soils, juices and mineral, vegetable or animal substances
whose sources of nutrition could be soot, ochre, sienna (natu-
ral or burnt, yellow or ochre, depending on the quantity of
v
iron oxides), indigo, scarlet or cochineal sap, Campeche stick,
the cactus fruit, the snail, or lime, the Franciscan Bernardino
de Sahagún as well as the Jesuit Francisco Xavier Clavijero
have recorded endless stones and plants used to produce
dyes and dressings; on the other hand, like a water mark, the
line, the contour of things, after the application of the color
itself, the jaspers, and, at the end, the modeling, the depth
in perspective, the chiaroscuro. It is needless to insist that, in
any case, it concerns a layer of sense, a stripe in the laborious
work of the paintbrushes and spatulas.
14 “On Hodgkin” (1995), on Cuestión de énfasis (2001), translation by Aurelio Major, México, Alfaguara, 2007, p. 174.
15 Clearly, Gilberto Aceves Navarro’s style is indistinctly explained by his mastery in drawing, the parting of composition and the chromatic offer; but in this series, the atten-tion the artist has given to the confection and the application of the palette is notable. Other series by the artist have also made important contributions of colors, like Las gordas en la playa, as a minimum example.
v

Up to this point, the parallelism with the pre-columbian univer-
se, because nothing is farther away from the intention of our
artist than to become an amoxtlacuilo16, the book painter, a
man learned on mythologies and on facts worth preserving. As
observers, we are before a display of form, the need to convey
a message or arrange any kind of grammar are completely ab-
sent: a gestural chronicle, but not of events, perhaps of impres-
sions. If there was a desire to fix a vision of fantasy, surely the
author would have used spells and sortileges. Going against
the tide, he insists on sharing with us, in a broad sense, the di-
rect perceptions of those who, somewhere between perplexed
and amazed, saw these noble beasts for the first time which,
nonetheless probably instilled fear everywhere. No inventory
of traits is drawn, neither is a catalogue or a taxonomy created:
the spots assault the fabric, they take over it, they are a primal
confusion, a visual shock that is unable to discern the parts that
conform that whole unknown. This way, homage to surprise,
disturbance and stupor appears and parades.
16 Translator’s note: Nahuatl word for book scribe.
17 The Latin satiric poet by antonomasia that remained active until the late I century and beginning of the II century of our era, an his “Who will watch the watchmen? To him we owe the expression panem et circense: “Bread and circus”.
Last, the exhibition will give less attention to the instrumental flow
of Cortés’ political ambition: the impious work of Sed quis custo-
diet ipsos custodies? by Juvenal17 , with which he seduces and
turns the totonacs into accomplices, those kind fat men, or at least
their principal cacique, who utilize and know they are being utilized
by the foreigners, in their struggle with the Aztecs to whom they
are subject and must pay tribute. Here, the treatment will insist on
throwing masses to the supports, once more the disquieting pre-
sence of certain moving spots, humanized, that aspire to individua-
lization. The anecdote fades in the figuration and the agreements
of Zempoala, the resistance to pay duties to the envoys of Mocte-
zuna Xocoyotzin and the refusal to serve the Mexica Empire, later
extended through the union with the tlaxcaltecas, will do without
an individual iconicity, they will spot the plastic landscape but more
as a reading hypothesis of the spectator. From time to time, the
errors will emerge and the characters that give them life will look
at us amused and ironic. Marveled, we will perceive the symbolic
violence of an encounter between odd worlds.

Aceves Navarro pintura tras pintura.

cia y universalidad.
Como autor, espectador, lector y creador, Aceves Na-
varro mantiene constantes y estilos: no tenerlos y no

Gilberto Aceves NAvArroLa Conquista 98

Two strangers see each other. It is their first encounter and surely,
there will be some sparks, maybe history will change forever.
The other is a painting about a first encounter, a narrative that
begins, a deconstruction of history, thought, creation, dialogue, rhythm,
color and balance. It is a painting composed of many oil paintings that
Gilberto Aceves Navarro left as a visual chronicle of the first encounter
between Spaniards and Mexicans in 1519, about man-horses and men
and the amazement, the fear and the legend, recreating the endless first
encounters of one day; of that imposed daily otherness; of the always
different, foreign and invasive creative force. The Conquest is the mirror
where we shall recognize ourselves, which tells what happens before
and during an encounter, and also, what happened after. “I left the city
of Cempoala that I named Sevilla, on August 16, with fifteen men on
horseback and three hundred farm-hands as best equipped for war as I
could and time gave it a place”, wrote Hernán Cortes.

Drawing is the beginning of everything. Processes of serial reproduction
are recreated thereafter, the post-Ford method of automatic repetition.
The beginning is the drawing of a scene, a machiavellically calculated
theme, drawn over and over again, where the pencil does not rest and
any paper is perfect. Gilberto Aceves Navarro traces over and over the
same scene: the painting that inspired, the idea that chased him for
years until it took form. The moment that he observed in ecstasy and
kept in his memory, which became an image in his consciousness, but
so did the neighbor’s car, the swimmer at the beach, a historical picture,
a passage or a landscape. Everything is subject for an artist.
Then the master draws the same thing over and over. A hundred or a
thousand times. Whatever it takes. It is an automatic impulse. He draws
until he memorizes the scene and afterwards, he draws again and again
to find differences in such repetition, the echoes of the memory and the

remains of his own hand: only then does creation start, the
climax in the middle of a mechanical process. By saturation
and similar movements expression, originality and aura are
recreated. It is the result of an overwhelming fight against
form, and from this struggle that seems so mechanical the
question and the answer arise: the trigger of the esthetical
experience and the reason for contemplation.
In Aceves Navarro’s method, it is the difference in reproduc-
tion which gives life, the search for new meanings and po-
etry from words themselves. A deconstruction. “A poem that
does not fight against the nature of words, forcing them to
go beyond themselves and their relative meanings, a poem
that does not attempt to make words say the unsaid, would
remain a simple verbal manipulation”.
“A work of art possesses form to the extent part of it leads
the reader to anticipate another part, to take pleasure in
the sequence” declared Keneth Burke. It is in the reiterative
process, in repetition and deconstruction through drawing,
where Aceves Navarro finds the images that continue and
form a series. Each image can be read by itself, but it also
forms part of a history, of the narrative of deconstruction, the re-making, the de-
contextualization and even the appropriation of the creator in front of his first idea
or trigger to the limits, sometimes stripping, editing, abstracting, and other times
adding and adding.
The master seems to know that it is through this repetition that he squeezes until
its last consequence not only the discursive stage of the artwork, but also its form,
style, technique, support and maybe, it is at that point where his contemporaneous
and vanguard nature arise. Perhaps just one painting is not enough to define and
explain the insight of the emotional, expressive or intellectual content. Maybe rep-
etition also dictates the work in series that characterizes the master’s work. When
do you stop thinking about something? When does an artist exhaust a theme?
Gilberto Aceves NAvArroLa Conquista101
“I parted from the city of Cempoala, which I named Sevilla, on
August 16, with fifteen men on horseback and three hundred
farm-hands as best equipped for war as I could and time gave it
a place.”, Hernán Cortes wrote. The legend and the history of the
Conquest begins here. El Gordo de Zempoala (The Fat Man from
Zempoala) results overwhelming for the sight of an artist interested
in a first encounter.
The Conquest seems then a series about the strangeness and
wonder before the unknown, maybe also on the ability to be sur-
prised and awed. That feeling of fear that erases the forms of
memory, that ability to remember and change the landscape, to
take the experience to other scenarios and moments that will later
challenge reality and which we later assure is true. The memory,
when it comes back to our mind and needs to be described out-
iio f t h e c o N q u e s t o r h o W G i l b e r t o A c e v e s N A v A r r o W A s A b l e t o t A m e t h e h o r s e s
side ourselves, already transformed by our desires, fears or con-
clusions, becomes the truth. That is the truth that Aceves Navarro
seeks to find, painting after painting.
The Conquest is a memory taken from other places which is trans-
formed into painting. Master Aceves Navarro confesses this is a
theme that has lived inside his head for many years, and that
there are even some paintings from the 70’s already attempting
his visual description.
Perhaps this series responds to a chronic necessity originat-
ing from history, but also from one moment’s curiosity that de-
terminately changed the future of a continent: a first encoun-
ter that not even the Fat Man from Zempoala imagined, who
was not able to welcome the Spanish travelers because of his

weight. An encounter which the Spaniards also did not foresee,
who had to walk a little more to meet the chief of the Totonacs,
Xicomecoatl, immortalized for his weight. The spark, even the
sarcasm of an encounter that we later transform and study as
a kind of tragedy with a happy ending, The Spanish Conquest
of México.
This first encounter between Spaniards and Mexicans has been
described a thousands times, but the vision of this memory
passed through legends, imagery, views from the conquerors
and the conquered, thousand of scenarios, truths and hypoth-
eses, now takes a new point of reflection in the hands of a visual
creator, it becomes a new truth in oil on canvas: “I wanted to
become a envoy to draw this instant, this contact, but I also
changed into someone else, perhaps into a peasant that was
passing through. I asked myself, how does a common man see
this encounter?”, explains Aceves Navarro. The answers are
endless and have infinite possibilities of recreation, record and
explanation, as extensive as the memories and visions of the
historic event seen through our own eyes.
The answers of Aceves Navarro’s The Conquest originate from the
possibilities of observation from the mind of an artist “in charge” of
the visual documentation during the event, but also from the infinity
of choices that a common reader can make (a right of the reader with
extraordinary creative potential), the reader that can and knows how
to lose himself between the memory and the words of a chronicle, to
become Hernán Cortés, a horse, Bernal Díaz del Castillo, Fray Fran-
cisco de Aguilar, the fat man from Zempoala or a peasant that was
“passing through”, who can be present or hidden behind a tree while
this happens, while history is in the making. An ever present reader,
protagonist or antagonist of a moment who can repeat the scene
thousands of times and transform the encounter into an image, into
a drawing which, endlessly recreated, finds its own dissimilarities and
creations, in versions as different as the readings themselves. This is
part of the greatness of art, the transformation not only of the memory
(documented or not, the memory does not care about this), but also
of the reader, who observes this passage as an omniscient narrator
and becomes an envoy to draw the event at the same time, who could
paint it with natural anilines on adobe or on an easel with oil paints
and paintbrushes while listening to good music on his Ipod.
Gilberto Aceves NAvArroLa Conquista199 Gilberto Aceves NAvArroLa Conquista103
In Aceves Navarro’s work, the freedom of reading is as infinite
as that of the author, the reader, the lamp that sheds light on
the letters, the book marker, the green highlighter marker,
the table lamp, the sofa, the coffee, the ashtray, and the
catalogue of Aceves Navarro’s work, which will at times
rest on some night table. It is a canvas painted with a
vocation of transparency and universality.
As an author, spectator, reader and creator, Aceves Navarro
maintains constant elements and styles: not having them but
not denying them at the same time. The master leaves the
story in absolute freedom to narrate its characters and sce-
narios, even if it is a historic event. The paintings that inte-
grate this series are different memoirs taken to the canvas by
a creator who chases and takes notes from the characters,
times, visions and narrators, as one who outlines a novel and
is surprised with the decisions that the characters make, even
against the author’s own will.
“I tried to describe these strange headed, shinning men. The
first shot that someone hears in his life. The feeling before
seeing a horse for the first time, the amazement, the fear. I
wanted to describe this common man’s feelings before im-
ages that he didn’t recognize as the men he knew, who were

something else”, explains the master, still with few notions on
the end of the series. This creator’s control maybe lives in the
form through which this chronicle intends to be visually nar-
rated through a painter: color, harmony, rhythm and balance,
plus some self-confessed baroque pretensions – perhaps
paying tribute to the saturation that precedes its creation –
the non-concretion of the figures that the artist has sought for
decades, the natural tone of expression and the non-existing
rules in the endless stylistic possibilities of the richness aris-
ing from the mind of a visual creator, the absolute freedom in
form (without following the stylistic standards of the time or
other versions of the encounter), and that delicate greatness
of a reader who knows how to travel freely through history.
Gilberto Aceves NAvArroLa Conquista105
Gilberto Aceves Navarro begins a series when he is interested in
a theme and finishes the series when another theme crosses his
mind, so he invests elsewhere that strange wisdom that would
seem necessary to know whether a series is composed of 27 and
not 28 paintings. The migration from one series to the other is
dictated by curiosity and consciousness, and no series is exclusive
from the totality of his creativity, in other words, he can work on
two v different series simultaneously.
As a good writer, Aceves Navarro usually becomes a different painter
in each series, as one who changes his clothes but knows that the
same body is underneath. In the repetition exercise, in his process,
the artist knows that the first painting of a series is the first when he
has forgotten all that he has learned, when he finds new relations in
the same composition.

One time the master started a series painting incessantly a descent of
Andrea Mantegna. Another time, leaving his hotel in Puerto Vallarta,
he stumbled upon two swimmers and the encounter ended up in “Las
bañistas de alumbradas”, which began on the beach and ended illumi-
nated by a car’s headlight; swimmers who later merged with “Las músi-
cas dormidas” by Rufino Tamayo in tribute (the painting is exhibited in
the Modern Art Museum in Mexico City). Another time, Aceves Navarro
worked with portrait of Benito Juárez and together with The Conquest,
he created a series of engravings inspired on skaters and cyclists, a work
on the plate in which he needed different forms of expression, and where
he released a lot of the humor that characterizes his work as a whole.
The artist’s creative process maintains his essence but also changes
in each series. Sometimes his attention centers on the theme and the
characters of each painting change, other times the center of change

is in the colors, the experimentation in the rhythm and the harmony
among forms, and still other times he attempts deconstruction within
the limits of abstraction.
Because a series is an entire idea, but since each painting is also
independent, when observing the last pieces of a series by Aceves
Navarro, they tend to be confused with pictorial languages arising
from the abstract or from the limits of expressionism. Therefore, if
we consider the definitions and the theory, it will be necessary to ex-
plain from the theoretical pen of Anna Moszynska that the abstract
exists in different degrees and forms: there is the one who tries to
abstract nature, one that emerges from what is real, and one who
arises from its own non-representative universe, as a proprietary lan-
guage without any real attachments. In this sense, the work of Acev-
es Navarro or specifically, the last paintings of his series, naturally
abstract the process and narrative of the story, the scene and the
idea of the work, completely detached from the purposes, means
and the creative process of abstract art. They naturally and instinc-
tively abstract, and far from becoming a manifesto or esthetic with
no relation with reality, they transform in limits of sight, reflection
and the color that the complete statement represents. It enlarges
the spectators’ view, it points out everything we have been through
for some reason, the seriousness of the matter, the importance of
laughter and the wonder of a creator who without any reservations,
can go beyond his own limits.
Each series by Aceves Navarro involves a mysterious narration, al-
ways different in form and substance, a riddle which the specta-
tor must figure out, in addition to enjoying and contemplating the
work. Perhaps what unifies some of the artist’s work in a series, is
the continuation up to the limits of color, form, and harmony, cre-
ating compositional relations, very often since the first image, but
other times following the command of the last painting, like mo-
ments that can continue or return the scene or the idea. “While I
am painting series, I gradually understand how they work without
realizing it, rhythm is perhaps the element through which I become
aware of their velocity and when rhythm repeats itself, maybe, it is
just then that I feel the work is done”, explains the master.
Two strangers look at each other. The painting and the spectator. It is
their first encounter and surely, there will be some sparks, maybe his-
tory will change forever.

Gilberto Aceves NAvArroLa Conquista 112

Gilberto Aceves NAvArroLa Conquista 120
On September 24th, 2011 master Gilberto Aceves Navarro
will turn eighty years of age, most of which he has dedi-
cated to artistic creation in the field of visual arts. With all
his creative abilities in full maturity, Aceves Navarro has been working
for almost three years in Humberto Baca’s engraving workshop.
In Monterrey, he recently created a series of works on cycling and for
such reason, he was invited to Guadalajara to create something similar
for the upcoming Pan-American Games. For ethical reasons he de-
clined to portray cyclists, but to continue with the theme of wheels, he
proposed instead to create images of skaters. Thus, he started a series
of engravings which are exhibited in the Museum of Journalism and
Graphic Arts, created and printed in Baca’s workshop, and such work
resulted in the sculpture that now can be admired at the intersection
of the México and López Mateos avenues.
Nothing better to represent the city’s actuality than an urban sport,
because Aceves Navarro recognizes that his world is Mexico City
and that he knows little about rural life.

A multifaceted artist, he has created paintings, drawings, engrav-
ings, sculptures, murals, performance and installations, the latter
when this kind of work was not yet known by such name.
With respect to the technique he uses in the graphic works he cre-
ates in Baca’s workshop, master Gilberto Aceves Navarro explains
that it is a kind of aqua fortis, in which he doesn’t apply many
hatches, but instead gradually lifts spots: this technique is very per-
sonal and he includes aquatint with dry tip incisions.
The expressionist style of Aceves Navarro is unique; and to create his
work he generally starts with the human figure, which is always pres-
ent in his work. In the skater series, the looseness of his tracing gradu-
ally configures different characters captured in the vertigo of move-
ment. Legs, arms, heads and torsos are revealed in each engraving by
the anatomic reference familiar to us; nevertheless, and if we look at
the set closely, most of the pieces are done with spots, lines and tex-
tures which form dynamic compositions having a rich range of grays
that begin with the whiteness of the paper and end in definite blacks.

A master of painting, he synthesizes the human figure down to its
most essential traits, and as you can see in engraving number 9 of
the series, through vigorous lines of different width, depth and di-
rection, he creates a feeling of bodies wrapped around emptiness.
Even when his intentions are not to create a school or venture in
current trends or even please others, but rather do what he must
do as an artist, i.e., create art, many of his students acknowledge
they learned from him, most of all, too see. In this series of engrav-
ings, Aceves Navarro demonstrates that he has developed a great
capacity to see and capture the movement of people on skates,
and takes advantage of the excuse offered by the clatter of such
recreational activity to produce artwork that follows a series of for-
mal requirements and transcend them, thanks to his creative im-
pulse that knows no rest.
All proportion maintained, if Picasso found in bullfighting the
theme of his time and gusto to create a series of engravings, Gil-
berto Aceves Navarro acknowledges his time and place and takes
skaters as a theme to explore and exploit the esthetic possibilities
they offer, also taking them to graphics.
The sculpture Los Patinadores, which is a derivation of the engrav-
ings, is appreciated in a perspective seen from both sides. With
accuracy and knowledge of what a work of art installed in a public
space can contribute, the artist decided to paint each figure in
even tones of gray, to barely create a contrast between them, with
the idea of not saturating the already overwhelming urban land-
scape; and to leave his peculiar imprint, he covered the compact
figures located at one of the ends with some gestural traces.
Gilberto Aceves Navarro’s first connection with Guadalajara may
have been with the local painter Carlos Orozco Romero, who was
his teacher. Today, he affirms his affective relationship with this city
through the installation of his sculpture at the intersection of two
important avenues and with the series of engravings, which con-
firm he is a creator with a strong expressivity that always seeks to
break the standards of what is accepted and what is in style.
To conclude, the skater series reflect a complete artist who knows
how to use plastic elements and techniques appropriately, in accor-
dance with their characteristics. Thus, the sculpture corresponds to
tridimensional art that can be appreciated both by touch or visual-
ly, and has the proper treatment that allows it to integrate into the
urban environment. On the other hand, the engravings belong in a
private, intimate sphere, where they can dialogue with the specta-
tors in a more relaxed and direct way. However, the esthetic values
and an emotion that seems to overflow, but is nevertheless con-
trolled, thanks to all the experience acquired through decades of
passionate dedication to art, prevail in both of the master’s works.
