The Federação Paranaense de Orientação, in a partnership with Clube de Orientação Rio Mafrense, South American Orienteering Confederation, Confederação Brasileira de Orientação and Rio Negro City Hall, is pleased to invite our national and international orienteering family to participate in the XV South American Orienteering Championships to be held in Rio Negro-PR and its surroundings from 14 to 18 November 2012.
This is a World Ranking Event (WRE) in the Southern Region of Brazil, whose winners will be named South American Champions in Orienteering.

Entry applications should be submitted to CBO. Fill in the entry form available at CBO homepage at www.cbo.org.br/site/competicoes/index.php. It is also available at Paraná Orienteering Federation a www.orientaparana.com.br.
Foreign competitors must pay their entry fees through IBAN (available in the entry form).
Entries will not be valid until reception of the full payment of the entry fee. Pay attention to deadlines.
Should you run in classes M21E or W21E, please inform your IOF Ranking ID when submitting your entry form.

Please note: the payer is responsible for all bank fees and charges. No entry will be
confirmed until the full payment has been received.
NO REIMBURSEMENTS after deposit is made.
Entry forms received after the midnight of October 29th 2012 will automatically be
directed to Open Courses.
Minors must have parents or other adult responsible permission. It should be in written
and signed.
Relay entries have a specific entry form. Provide information regarding your team
members and team class. Entry fee for each team is 13.00 €. Relay classes are Junior
(ages 16, 18 20), Adult (ages over 21), Master (ages over 35), Senior (ages over 45).
You can also entry mixed teams. It means men and women in the same team; however
they must belong to the same age group. For instance; you cannot register a team as
Mixed Master team with one participant who belongs to different age group (younger).
MODEL EVENT: You should inform your interest in running the model event in your entry
form. Fee is R$ 5.00 (3.00 €). ONE MAP, ONE COMPETITOR – NO EXCEPTIONS.
RULES AND GUIDELINES
The competition will follow the International Orienteering Federation Foot Orienteering Rules (http://orienteering.org/foot-orienteering/rules). It will also follow the CBO Rules for Foot Orienteering (http://www.cbo.org.br/site/regras/index.php) and the Rules for the South American Orienteering Championships, when applicable. C L A S S E S
This is an open event and it offers all IOF classes. There are no age restrictions for M/W
21E classes. Should you intend to participate in a class different from M/W 21E, notice
that championship’s classes are also divided in “N” (newcomers), “B” (difficult) and “A”
(very difficult). For example: H45B means: Men over 45 – Difficult course. In case of
doubts, send an email to the organization.
U N I F O R M
In accordance with Rule 127 of the CBO Foot Orienteering Regulations: No spike shoes,
however, metal studded shoes are allowed. Legs and arms must be covered. All athletes
shall wear number bibs during the courses. The organisation will provide number bibs for
foreign participants.

EMBARGOED AREA
In compliance with the rules, it is forbidden any kind of training in the areas surrounding the municipality of Rio Negro without previous authorization of the regional federation (FPO).

How to reach Rio Negro
- The nearest large airport is Afonso Pena International Airport in Curitiba, which is 109 km away from Rio Negro. From Curitiba to Rio Negro you may travel by car or bus.
- Bulletin No. 3 (Octubre) will bring information on details regarding car rental at Afonso Pena International Airport in Curitiba and buses timetable for trips from Curitiba to Rio Negro.

HARD FLOOR ACCOMODATION
José Müller Sports Gym (Event Centre), located at 60, Praça Santo Angelo, Bairro Paraíso, right across the military unit (5º Regimentos de Carros de Combate).
The place offers a nice infrastructure with a safe and large area for parking. It also has a football (soccer) field and a sand court for volleyball.
Only “iglu” or similar tents allowed. Be careful and do not cause any damage to the gym floor.
If necessary, a second gym will be used: SESI Sports Gym. It is located at 954 Severo de Almeida Street – Bom Jesus – Rio Negro (about 3,3 Km from the event centre).

Relay
- The concentration for the relay event will be about 6,8km from the event centre and most of the way is asphalted.
- The predominant vegetation is large pine trees (reforestation) with some native woods also.
- Its relief varies from 785 to 800m.
Sprint
- The concentration for the Sprint will be at the José Müller Sports Gym – the event centre.
- Courses are mostly in urban area. There is some vegetation on the shore of Rio Negro.
- Its relief varies from 780 to 820m.
Middle and Long
- The concentration for middle and long courses will be 10,6 km from the event centre in the margin of BR 116 highway (towards Curitiba), 2 km after the tollgate (R$3,30).
- There will be showers and bathrooms available.
- The vegetation in the area is mostly pine trees of varied ages and some native woods, mainly in the lower parts of the terrain.

- Its altitude varies from 790 to 900m.
- An uncrossable river (Passa Três river) cuts the map. There will be some crossing points marked on the map and the runners must use them.
Model Event
- Concentration for the model event will be 15,3km from the event centre. Part of the way is asphalted (9.6 km) and the rest permits good vehicles traffic all over the year. You should drive through BR 116 highway (direction to Curitiba) and take a small road in the right side of the highway 1,0 km after the tollgate (R$3,30). Then go until the São Pedro and São Paulo church (in Cunhupã).

- The vegetation in the area is mostly pine trees (reforestation) of different ages mixed with some native vegetation mainly in the lower parts of the terrain. This area is very similar to the middle and long courses areas.
- Its relief is reasonably hilly with its elevations varying from 800m to 910m.
C O U R S E S
Model Event
- All those runners who intend to participate in the model event must inform it on the entry form and also pay the fee as informed on the item Registration and Entry above in this bulletin.
- Dates and times for the model event are in the General Programme.
- You will get your map for the model event at the start line, where there will be a person and a list with all competitors who are entitled. One map, one person. No exceptions.
Relay
- The relay competition will have the following classes: “H” (Men), “D” (Women), “HD” (mixed – at least one woman) and in the following age classes: Junior (16 to 20); Adult (21); Master (35 to 44) and Senior (over 45).
Sprint
- All Sprint courses will be in urban area.
- Details on the Sprint courses on bulletins 3 and 4.
- The vehicles traffic in the area is considered low and it will be open to the cars, however, all measures concerning the runners’ safety will be taken.

Middle and Long
- Estimated winners times are in accordance with the IOF regulations. - There will be showers and toilets available in the concentration area. - Further details on Bulletin No. 3.

PUNCHING, TIMING AND RESULTS
This event will use the SportIdent electronic system.
Athletes who own a SICard must inform its number and those who do not own it must rent one. SI-Card rental must be paid upon registration.
Lost or damaged SI-Cards will be charged and the participant must pay 40.00 €.
Start lists for all courses will be available at the Brazilian Orienteering Confederation and Paraná Orienteering Federation homepages, but not before November 11th 2012.
AWARD CEREMONY
When going up to the podium during the award ceremony runners must be dressing according to the event relevance. The organization suggests to dress with uniforms that highlight orienteering or your club/federation.
When on the podium avoid taking large banners or flags. Respect the other runners.
The organization will provide chairs near the podium, but they are only for those who will be awarded. It aims to make the ceremony faster.
VISA AND ENTRY TO BRAZIL
Citizens of countries that do not demand visas from Brazilian nationals usually do not need visas to enter Brazil (most European and South American countries fall in this category).

invitation letter.
Citizens from the following countries DO NOT NEED VISAS when travelling to Brazil for

Athlete’s Kit
- As soon as you arrive in Rio Negro, please go to the Event Centre Secretariat to get your kit with all necessary items for your participation (number bibs, SICard, etc).
- Foreign athletes are asked to bring their country flag and present it at the Secretariat. They will be raised during the competition days and returned in the last day.

Merchandise
- T-shirts with the SAOC logo will be available during all Brazilian Orienteering Championships stages.
TOURISM SUGGESTIONS
Visit www.turismo.pr.gov.br and know the several tourism options in Paraná. The most important are:
- Iguaçu Falls – Foz do Iguaçu-PR.
- Train trip through Serra do Mar from Curitiba to Morretes-PR.

History in brief
- Rio Negro is a Brazilian city placed in the South-eastern region of Paraná State. Its latitude is 26º06'21" South and its longitude is 49º47'51" West. Its average altitude is 780m.
- The city whole area is 604,63 km² with a population of 31.261 inhabitants (2010).
- This city borders the State of Santa Catarina through Negro river and it is integrated to the neighbouring city of Mafra and both cities form an urban agglomeration with about 80.000 people. They are typical sister cities, placed each other in different sides of the river, forming a socioeconomically perfect symbiosis and behaviour themselves as a single city.
- Rio Negro region has a subtropical climate and the average temperature is 17º C. The competition period is in spring, with nice temperatures ranging from 20º to 25ºC.

AZURE JAY (Mascot)

The Azure Jay (Cyanocorax caeruleus) is a passeriform bird of the crow family Corvidae. It is found in the Atlantic
Forest, especially with Araucaria angustifolia, in south-eastern Brazil (São Paulo to Rio Grande do Sul), far eastern Paraguay and far north-eastern Argentina. It is the state bird of Paraná.
The Azure Jay has a total length of approximately 40 cm (16 in) and it weighs about 270 grams (9.6 oz), and is the
largest South American corvid. Its plumage is intensely blue with a contrasting black head and upper chest. Males and
females are similar, although the females typically are smaller.
It feeds extensively on the nut-like seeds of Araucaria angustifolia, but it is not strictly limited to this, since it also
feeds on insects and fruit. As other corvids, Azure Jays are highly intelligent. Their communication is complex, consisting
of at least 14 distinct vocalizations. They form groups of 4 to 15 individuals that are well organized in hierarchies. These
groups remain stable for up to two generations.
The Azure Jay has been adopted as the Paraná State bird.
BRAZILIAN PINE
(Portuguese: pinheiro-do-paraná or pinheiro brasileiro)
Araucaria angustifolia, the Parana pine or Brazilian pine, is a species in the conifer genus Araucaria. It is native
to southern Brazil (sometimes found in high-altitude areas of southern Minas Gerais, southern Rio de Janeiro and São
Paulo, but more typically in the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul); the northeast
of Argentina (Misiones and Corrientes)and locally in Paraguay (Alto Paraná) , growing in low mountains at altitudes of
500–1800 meters.

It is an evergreen tree growing to 40 m tall and 1 m trunk diameter. The leaves are thick, tough and scale like,
triangular, 3-6 cm long, 5-10 mm broad at the base, and with razor-sharp edges and tip. They persist 10 to 15 years, so
cover most of the tree except for the trunk and older branches.
It is usually dioecious, with the male and female cones on separate trees. The male (pollen) cones are oblong,
60 cm long at first, expanding to 10-18 cm long by 15-25 mm broad at pollen release. Like all conifers it is wind pollinated.
The female cones (seed), which mature in autumn about 18 months after pollination, are globose, large, 18-25 cm
diameter, and hold about 100–150 seeds. The cones disintegrate at maturity to release the approximately 5 cm long nut-
like seeds, which are then dispersed by animals, notably the Azure Jay, Cyanocorax caeruleus.
It is closely related to Araucaria araucana from further southwest in South America, differing most conspicuously in
the narrower leaves.
It prefers well drained, slightly acidic soil but will tolerate almost any soil type provided drainage is good. It requires
a subtropical climate with abundant rainfall, tolerating occasional frosts down to about −5 °C to -20°C . It is a popular
garden tree in subtropical areas, planted for its unusual effect of the thick, 'reptilian' branches with a very symmetrical
appearance.
The seeds, similar to large pine nuts, are edible, and are extensively harvested in southern Brazil (Paraná, Santa
Catarina and Rio Grande do SulStates), a habit particularly important for the region's small population of Native
Americans. The seeds, called pinhão ũ] are popular as a winter snack. The city of Lages, in Santa Catarina state,
holds a popular pinhão fair, in which hot wine and boiled araucaria seeds are consumed. In Brazil, 3,400 tonnes of seeds
are collected annually which, combined with extensive logging, seriously threatens the regeneration of the species.The
seeds are very important for the native animals. Several mammals and birds eat pinhão, and it has an important ecological
role in Ombrophilous Mixed Forests (a sub-type of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest).Although the common names in various
languages refer to the species as a "pine," it is not a true pine.
The Paraná Orienteering Federation has adopted Paraná pine as the symbol of all Paraná State vegetation.
