Pagina do Pároco Saudações! Enquanto celebramos o Baptismo do
Senhor e sabendo os efeitos do sacra-mento, devemos estar
perguntando a nós mesmos, “Por que foi que Jesus se submeteu a ser
baptizado?” E é mesmo uma boa pergunta, uma que até João fez. João
reconheceu a necessidade de ser baptizado dizendo, “Eu é que tenho
neces-sidade de ser baptizado por ti, e Tu vens a mim?” Uma
sugestão é que Jesus sa-cerdote (o “Sumo Sacerdote,”) teve de ser
chamado por Deus, e de ser lavado por um sacerdote existente. João
Baptista foi sacerdote, herdando a ofício do seu pai. Isto explica
a razão de Jesus, que segundo o Cristianismo não tem pecado,
submeteu- se a um ritual que significa a remissão dos pecados.
Jesus diz do seu baptismo que é “próprio” e o “cumprimento de toda
a justiça.” Não existe ne-nhuma sagrada escritura que sugere que o
Messias deve ser baptizado, o que se cumpre então é a vontade de
Deus. Deus quis que Jesus fosse completamente imerso na experiência
humana para redimir- nos do pecado. Qualquer que seja a razão,
Jesus ensina- nos da necessidade de sermos baptizados. Porque
nascemos com o pecado original e somos dados a pecar por causa da
nossa natureza huma-
na somos baptizados para morrer com Cristo e ressuscitar com
ele, fora das águas do baptismo, a uma vida nova em Cristo.
Enquanto somos baptizados somos Cristo e somos Cristãos.
Chamamo-nos Cristãos. Como aprende-mos a não fazer nada que possa
envergonhar ou desonrar a nossa família, igualmente não devemos
fazer nada que desonre o nome Cristão e tudo o que nos envolva em
ser Cristãos.
Com a celebração do Baptismo do Senhor o tempo de Natal termina
e entramos no tempo Ordinário. Ordinário normalmente denota
mundano, comum ou usual, mas qualquer um de nós deve admitir que
nunca há nada mun-dano, comum ou ordinário da vida de Jesus Cristo.
Nem, por isso, é o nosso louvor a Deus na Eucaristia. Ao con-trário
de indicar comum ou ordinário o termo “ordinário” vem da palavra
“ordinal” como em termos dos números ordinais. Os números cardeais
são “um, dois, três, etc.” Os números ordinais são “primeiro,
segundo, terceiro, etc.” Os números ordinais são os que usamos para
pôr as coisas em ordem. Também na igreja a palavra ordinal pode
indicar “ritual.” Todos os Domingos e semanas do ano que não calhem
dentro de tempos apropriados, como Advento, Natal, Quaresma,
Páscoa, Pentecostes estão numa “ordem,” Segundo, Terceiro, Quarto,
etc. Domingo do Tempo Ordinário. A primeira semana do tempo
Ordinário começa com o último Domingo de Natal, o Baptis-mo do
Senhor. Quando celebramos a Eucaristia celebramos o mistério da
nossa salvação, a vida, morte e ressurrei-ção de Nosso Senhor,
Jesus Cristo. A próxima vez que entram na igreja aparecerá mais
simples e as vestes serão verdes. Mas lembre- se de que nunca há
nada simples ou ordinário do que somos e que fazemos quando nos
reu-nirmos para celebrar a Eucaristia.
Juntos pedimos a Deus na Esperança de que em breve podemos
celebrar a Eucáristia como antes do Covid. Devemos lembrar que no
ano 1918 muitos eventos e acontecimentos cotidianas foram
cancelados, e muitos lugares fechados por causa da Gripe Espanhola.
Deus queira que jamais teremos de preocupar-mos de de outra
pandemia nas nossa vidas nem nas vidas dos nossos futuros entes
queridos.
Minha recuperação correu bem e, depois de consultar com a
médica, espero que serei liberado para continuar com as funções
habituais na igreja e reitoria. Dou graças a Deus que a minha
experiência com o Covid-19 não foi tão severo como de outros que
sofreram muito mais ou morreram. Era para ter a cirurgia de repor o
joelho no dia 4 de janeiros, que claro adiei para o dia 24 de maio.
Até se pudesses não poderia ter voltado para o hospital tão cedo.
Deus é sempre bom e sabe o que nós precisamos. Segunda-feira foi
para o funeral da minha Tia Rosa, que sempre vinha cá para a Missa
de Páscoa e jantar com a família e também as Festas de Santo
António. A minha Mãe consi-derava a como e sempre referia a Rosa
como seu anjo porque ela ajudava a com tudo que jamais podia fazer.
Ago-ra estão juntas no Reino. Certamente meu Tio, filhos e toda a
família vão sentir sua falta nos eventos familiares. Paz &

Pastor’s Message Greetings!
As we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, knowing the effects of
the sacra-ment, we should be wondering, “Why did Jesus submit
himself to be bap-tized?” A very good question, even one that John
himself asked. John recog-nized his need for baptism saying, “I
need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?” One
suggestion is that as priest (the “High Priest”) Jesus had to be
called by God, and washed with water by an existing priest. John
the Baptist was a priest, inheriting the office from his father.
This explains why Jesus, who according to Christianity is sinless,
submitted to a ritual that signi-fied repentance for sin. However,
Jesus was not ordained into the priesthood of Aaron, but into a
superior priesthood - the Order of Melchizedek. Jesus says that his
baptism is “fitting” and the “fulfillment of righteousness.” Since
there is no scripture suggesting that the messiah should be
baptized, what is being fulfilled is the will of God. God willed
that Jesus should be completely im-mersed in the human experience
so as to redeem us from sin. Jesus teaches us about the need for
baptism. Since we are born with original sin and are prone to sin
we become baptized to die with Christ and rise with him, out of the
waters of baptism, to a new life in Christ. As we are baptized we
take on Christ and become Christian. We are named Christian. Just
as we are taught not to do anything that would bring shame upon our
family name, likewise we should do nothing that would bring shame
upon the name Christian and all that entails. With the celebration
of the Baptism of the Lord this weekend the Christmas season
liturgically comes to a close and we now enter into the season of
Ordinary time. Ordinary generally means common or mundane, yet any
of us would, or should admit that there is nothing common or
mundane or “ordinary” about the life of Jesus Christ. Nor, for that
matter, is our worship of God in the Eucharist. Rather than mean
common or mundane the term “ordinary” comes from the word ordinal
as in the ordinal (as opposed to the cardinal) numbers. As a
review, the cardinal numbers are one, two, three, etc. Ordinal
numbers are those we use to place things in order, first, second,
third, etc. All the weeks of the year that do not fall into the
named Sundays, because of the season in which they fall, are
ordered. These seasons are Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter,
which ends with Pentecost. The first week of Ordinary time begins
with the last Sunday of the Christmas season, this year the Baptism
of the Lord. When we celebrate the Eucharist we celebrate the
mystery of our salvation, the life, death and resurrection of our
Lord, Jesus Christ. The seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent and
Easter allow us to enter more deeply into that aspect of our Lord’s
life. Far from being Ordinary our celebration is always
extraordinary, beyond the ordinary.
Let us together, Pray in the Hope that soon we will be able to
celebrate Eucharist as we did before Covid We should remember that
in 1918 many things came to a stop and were closed because of the
Spanish Flu. Please God we won’t have to worry about another
pandemic in our lifetime or that of the ones we love.
My recovery has gone well and I will have spoken with my doctor,
hopefully to be liberated to continue regular functions in church.
I thank God that my case of Covid-19 and the illness I had was not
as severe as many have suffered, or even died. The knee replacement
I was to have done on January 4 is postponed until May 24. Not that
I would have been allowed, but I just couldn’t return to the
hospital that soon. God is always good and under-standing and knows
what we need. Monday, January 4th the day of my scheduled knee
surgery, I was in Fall River for the funeral of my dear Aunt Rose.
She was here for all my family Easter gatherings and our St.
Anthony Feast. My Mom referred to har as her Angel because she did
almost everything for her in the final years of her life. Now they
are together in the Kingdom. Certainly her husband, my Uncle Joe,
children and the entire family will miss her presence at all our

By Dr. Scott Hahn Easter Sunday (Cycle B) The tomb was empty. In
the early morning darkness of that first Easter, there was only
confusion for Mary Magdalene and the other disciples. But as the
daylight spread, they saw the dawning of a new crea-tion. At first
they didn't understand the Scripture, to-day's Gospel tells us. We
don't know which precise Scripture texts they were supposed to
understand. Perhaps it was the sign of Jonah, who rose from the
belly of the great fish after three days (see Jonah 1:17). Or maybe
Hosea's prophecy of Israel's restora-tion from exile (see Hosea
6:2). Perhaps it was the psalmist who rejoiced that God had not
abandoned him to the nether world (see Psalm 16:9-10). Whichever
Scripture it was, as the disciples bent down into the tomb, they
saw and they believed. What did they see? Burial shrouds in an
empty tomb. The stone removed from the tomb. Seven times in nine
verses we hear that word - "tomb." What did they believe? That God
had done what Jesus said He would do - raised Him up on the third
day (see Mark 9:31; 10:34). What they saw and believed, they bore
witness to, as today's First Reading tells us. Peter's speech is a
summary of the gospels - from Jesus' baptism in the Jordan to His
hanging on a tree (see Deuteronomy 21:22-23), to His rising from
the dead. We are children of the apostles, born into the new world
of their witness. Our lives are now "hidden with Christ in God," as
today's Epistle says. Like them, we gather in the morning on the
first day of the week - to celebrate the Eucharist, the feast of
the empty tomb. We rejoice that the stones have been rolled away
from our tombs, too. Each of us can shout, as we do in today's
Psalm: "I shall not die, but live." They saw and believed. And we
await the day they promised would come - when we, too, "will
ap-pear with Him in glory."
Batismo do Senhor (Ano B) A liturgia deste domingo tem como
cenário de fundo o projecto salvador de Deus. No baptismo de Jesus
nas margens do Jordão, revela-se o Filho amado de Deus, que veio ao
mundo enviado pelo Pai, com a missão de salvar e libertar os
homens. Cumprindo o projecto do Pai, Ele fez-se um de nós,
partil-hou a nossa fragilidade e humanidade, liber-tou-nos do
egoísmo e do pecado e empenhou-Se em promover-nos, para que
pudéssemos chegar à vida em plenitude. A primeira leitura anuncia
um misterioso “Servo”, escolhido por Deus e enviado aos homens para
instaurar um mundo de justiça e de paz sem fim… Investido do
Espírito de Deus, ele concretizará essa missão com hu-mildade e
simplicidade, sem recorrer ao poder, à imposição, à prepotência,
pois esses esquemas não são os de Deus. No Evangelho, aparece-nos a
concretização da promessa profética: Jesus é o Fil-ho/”Servo”
enviado pelo Pai, sobre quem re-pousa o Espírito e cuja missão é
realizar a libertação dos homens. Obedecendo ao Pai, Ele tornou-Se
pessoa, identificou-Se com as fragilidades dos homens, caminhou ao
lado deles, a fim de os promover e de os levar à reconciliação com
Deus, à vida em plenitude. A segunda leitura reafirma que Jesus é o
Fil-ho amado que o Pai enviou ao mundo para concretizar um projecto
de salvação; por isso, Ele “passou pelo mundo fazendo o bem” e
libertando todos os que eram oprimidos. É este o testemunho que os
discípulos devem dar, para que a salvação que Deus oferece chegue a
todos os povos da terra .

Baptism of the Lord (Cycle B) The Liturgy last week revealed the
mystery of God's plan - that in Jesus all peoples, symbolized by
the Magi, have been made "co-heirs" to the blessings promised
Israel. This week, we're shown how we claim our inheritance. Jesus
doesn't submit to John's baptism as a sinner in need of
purification. He humbles Himself to pass through Jordan's waters in
order to lead a new "exodus" - opening up the promised land of
heaven so that all peoples can hear the words pronounced over Jesus
today, words once reserved only for Israel and its king: that each
of us is a beloved son or daughter of God (see Genesis 22:2; Exodus
4:22; Psalm 2:7). Jesus is the chosen servant Isaiah prophesies in
to-day's First Reading, anointed with the Spirit to make things
right and just on earth. God puts His Spirit upon Jesus to make Him
"a covenant of the people," the liberator of the captives, the
light to the nations. Jesus, today's Second Reading tells us, is
the One long expected in Israel, "anointed...with the Holy Spirit
and power." The word Messiah means "one anointed" with God's
Spirit. King David was "the anointed of the God of Jacob" (see 2
Samuel 23:1-17; Psalm 18:51; 132:10,17). The prophets taught Israel
to await a roy-al offshoot of David, upon whom the Spirit would
rest (see Isaiah 11:1-2; Daniel 9:25). That's why the crowds are so
anxious at the start of today's Gospel. But it isn't John they're
looking for. God confirms with His own voice what the Angel earlier
told Mary - Jesus is the Son of the Most High, come to claim the
throne of David forever (see Luke 1:32-33). In the Baptism that He
brings, the voice of God will hover over the waters as fiery flame,
as we sing in today's Psalm. He has sanctified the waters, made
them a passage-way to healing and freedom - a foun-tain of new
birth and everlasting life.

Anointing of the Sick The church encourages & invites all
who are ill, who are to undergo surgery, or who are confined to
their home due to illness to be prayed over & anointed with
sacred oil. This can take place after Mass, at home or at the
hospital. Please do not wait for the last moment for yourself or a
loved one to be anointed. The last sacrament is Viaticum or
commun-ion for the dying. Please speak to a priest for
anointing.
