Abstract: This paper analyses the affiliations established
between users of aVirtual Learning Environment (VLE) composed of
parents and teachers ofhandicapped students. This virtual
environment aimed to promote interaction and
sharing of experiences related to people with multiple
handicaps.The main objective of this work is to study the
characteristics and breadth of thefriendships established within
this virtual environment using social networkanalysis methods.The
results presented in this paper derive from data available in the
personal pagesof the study’s participants. These data were
investigated with an essentiallysociocentric perspective; this
implied researching the group which interacted foreight months. The
indicators analysed comprise the density of the establishednetwork,
its level of concentration, the degree of inclusivity, the
participants which
stood out as most influential and with most prestige, as well as
the subgroups thatemerged within the network.The results found
indicate that the virtual environment created was favourable tothe
establishment of affiliations or pro-social relationships between
the participants, with a greater impact on the teachers than
on the parents. It can beinferred that the relationships
established between the participants have afavourable effect on
communication and information sharing. Despite the extent ofthe
relationships between the participants not having been particularly
large,specially amidst the parents, the study is innovative as it
establishes an online
relationship between elements crucial to the development of
children and youthswith multiple handicaps: their parents and their
teachers.
