    and feeling unbelievable longing and sadness

    about her lack of awareness of myexistence.

    I just had this huge amount of pain from

    age 14 on, where I would fall so head over

    heels with girls and couldnt have contact

    with them, I felt that if I cant have that

    beauty in my life, then I have to create

    something comparable.

    [Cmere] is a jaded love song - very bitter. I

    will freely admit I gravitate towards the same

    themes of relationships, distance and

    proximity, and lust and longing. Thats what

    inspires me the most.

    What got you into surfing, and what do you find relaxing andinteresting about it?Paul Banks: Since I was a kid, I had body surfed. It's something I gotinto kind of in high school.     As a younger artist, I sorta felt like everything should be

    formless and shapeless and intuitive. But then I learnedthat frameworks can actually enhance the art. Its a similarlesson I learned when I was reading sonnets and poetrythat was restricted to form.

    Instinctively, I felt that free-form poetrywithout therestrictions of iambic pentameter or rhyme schemeswasgonna be much more expressive.

    Then I read John Donne. Then I read Shakespeare. And Iunderstood that you could not possibly encapsulate more

    doing. And it revealed to me that maybe the limitations ofthe poetic structure, in some fucked up way, actuallyincreased your ability to communicate. And that maybe byapplying some framework to what Im doing, it will help.

    Theres a reason that a lot of great songs have verse-chorus, verse-chorus, bridge. So that contributed to mysongwriting, when I realized that there is a formula.

    But the key is to understand the formula, and then make ityour own. Then you can expand from there. Just like inchess: just embrace a standard opening and go from there.

    How does a design come together initially? Do you hear the music as you goalong, or does a visual idea come first?David Calderly: Often the band may have a loose subject or theme and want tosee it articulated or explored as a visual idea. On the previous album, Paul hadbeen reading about the stones of Puma Punku and the Nazca lines in Peru, this

    in turn led to the visual direction for the album art.

    We caught up with David Calderley from Graphic Therapy for a few words aboutthe project:David Calderly: I had worked with Interpol on the previous album Our Love to

    Admire, so obviously I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to work withthem again. I have always been a fan, so it was great to be involvedagain. Working closely with lead singer Paul Banks, the concept was influencedlargely by the ancient stones of Puma Punku and the concepts of navigation, re-alignment in both a physical and emotional space.
