It is especially pleasing to see that the needs and ambitions of CEMS

MIM students are being satisfied. A recent independent survey identifies

international career opportunities as the key criterion for students choosing to

take our program. The Financial Times result confirms that they are achieving

their professional aims very soon after graduation.

Today, CEMS is in the global league of

    leaders in the pre-experience Masters

market and it cannot be equaled

in terms of the reputation of its

    institutions collaborate together with

more than 60 corporate partners to

    offer international, postgraduate

students a unique blend of high

    quality education and professional

    experience.

    While the academic institutions

    provide the highest standards of

    teaching and research excellence, the

    the practical and business-oriented

    skills and experience necessary to

achieve the greatest level of success.

    CEMS selects one Academic Member

To me, the CEMS MIM program has offered great value by combining international experience with training of both theoretical

knowledge and practical skills. The program has also given me an unique chance to connect with other CEMS students

across the globe, and the opportunity to interact and work with corporate partners in seminars, events and projects.

Last but not least, the CEMS experience has been a challenging and rewarding one that has developed my perspective of

the world and helped me shape how I see my professional and personal role in it.

    CEMS MIM Curricular Elements

    Semester Abroad

    Students spend one semester abroad

during either Term 1 or Term 2.

    Block Seminars

    Block Seminars gather professors

    and students from various CEMS

institutions for a week, for an in-

    depth analysis of an innovative

    management topic. Subjects derive

    from interdisciplinary and cross-

    cultural perspectives; most topics are

not a part of the universities standard

curricula. The Block Seminar is a

    mandatory element of the program

    and earns 3 ECTS.

    CEMS MIM Courses

As a standard, students must pass

CEMS Courses amounting to 45 ECTS

    credits during the MIM program,

30 ECTS credits in Term 1 and 15

ECTS credits in Term 2. During

    Term 1, students must successfully

complete a CEMS Course in the field

of Strategy. During Term 2, students

    must successfully complete a CEMS

Course in the field of Cross-Cultural

    Management. These courses are

    offered exclusively to CEMS students.

The remaining CEMS courses are a

selection of the best courses with an

    International Management profile

chosen from the portfolio of the

    member institutions.

    Business Projects

    Within the CEMS Curriculum,

    Business Projects are designed as

a real life learning experience for

    students. International student teams

(maximum of 5 students) solve a real

    business problem as a one-semester

    part-time activity tutored by the

company and a professor in parallel.

Each student must do a Business

Project during the spring semester. It

    earns 15 ECTS credits.

The Business Project is a consultancy-

    like project. Student teams present

the results in a final report and an

    oral presentation. Business projects

    reinforce the partnership between

    universities and companies in jointly

    shaping students learning process in

    international management.

Students are offered the opportunity to

gain insight into business life, to train

their capacities of analysis and problem

    solving, to apply research methods,

    to transfer theoretical knowledge to

    practical situations, to learn process

    management, and to sharpen social

skills and competences. They can get to

    know potential employers and redefine

    their professional goals. They are

expected to take responsibility for the

project, to strive for the best results, to

share the workload equally within the

team, and to communicate well with

    their tutors.

    Skill Seminars

    Skill Seminars are training seminars

in practical skills. They are essential

    to kick-start an effective professional

    career and fundamental to adjust

    easily to an international management

    environment. Small groups ensure an

    interactive dimension. Skill Seminars

are very often offered in close

    cooperation with companies. Students

have to attend four Skill Seminar days

    in total (1 day = 0.5 ECTS).

    Internship Abroad

    Internships provide students with

    a real life professional learning

    experience, integrating students in an

    organizations culture and processes.

Their main objective is to turn

    academic experience and theoretical

    knowledge into a professional, multi-

    cultural experience. They must

therefore be at the level of a graduate

recruit in order to provide valuable

    business experience. The internship,

with a minimum length of 10 weeks,

can take place at any time during the

graduate period of studies, even before

    the MIM program begins.

    Student organizations

    CEMS students are represented

centrally by the Student Board and

    locally by CEMS Clubs.

CEMS is much more than a top masters programme. It is not also a synonym of studying abroad for one or two semesters, but

also a life changing experience in all dimensions. It means high-class teaching in a challenging environment. This programme

will definitely provide you with the tools to succeed no matter where.

CEMS students face a world where there are neither physical nor psychological barriers, and are the perfect product of a

global environment. However, the people are CEMS best! Gathering such a pool of talented students makes CEMS experience

    specially rich and rewarding!

You will be able to become friends with the best people all over the world, thus building a range of friendships that will never allow you

to feel as a foreigner anywhere you work in! Living CEMS will surely exceed all expectations you may have a priori!

The CEMS Student Board (SB)Each CEMS institution is represented

by a student elected to the Student

    Board (SB).

The SB has set the following aims for

    itself:

Be a driver of the international

    student community

    Promote the student community

    and CEMS organization in

    general

Be a partner for discussion with

    other stakeholders Facilitate company-student contact.

    The Student Board closely cooperates

with the CEMS Head Office, the Executive

    Board, and the Alumni Association.

The CEMS ClubsCEMS Clubs have been set up at most

    institutions to:

    Drive the international student

    community

    Enhance CEMS reputation

    Strengthen the international

    network between students

    Foster strong relationships with

    alumni

    Promote strong relationships with

    corporate partners

Nurture innovative and progressiveideas to help CEMS grow

    Create exciting opportunities for all

    the parties.

Student Board meeting in June 2010

CEMS has been a unique and utterly rewarding experience for 4 main reasons:

    1. Empowerment - Even though we have some compulsory courses, those account for only 20/25% of the total credits, thus allowing

you to build your curriculum according to your preferences and tailoring your profile to what you really like.

    2. Creativity/Practical Insights - CEMS is much more than studying the great academics. Professors constantly challenge you to

rupture the conventions and think beyond what has been done. Success is only achieved through consecutive mistakes.

    3. Group Spirit - CEMSies are from all the continents and within a month everyone gets along as though they had been friends for

years. The exchange of experiences enriches not only our academic projects, but more importantly our interpersonal skills, which,

in the near future, will make the difference between doing the things right, or doing the right things.

    4. International Focus - My ambition has always been to start my career in an international context outside of Portugal and due to

CEMS, the incredible geographic and industry diversity of its Corporate Partners and the Career Forum, it is possible.

The Lisbon CEMS Club was foundedin 2009 with the main objective of

engaging the CEMS students in diverse

    extracurricular activities.

    Lisbon hosted the MARENOSTRUM,

    the 1st. CEMS Mediterranean Regional

Event, from the 10th to the 12th

of March, 2011. The CEMS Clubs of

the region - ESADE, BOCCONI and

NOVA - were challenged by the CEMS

Student Board to present a proposal

and the Lisbon CEMS Club was thechosen one. Under the umbrella topic

Studying in two different countries (in my case I spent my first semester in Stockholm School of Economics) attending con-

ferences in other countries, participating in student board meetings and meeting people from all over the world provided

me with the soft skills needed when it comes to finding an international job. In turn, lectures, the block seminar, hands-on

business projects, as well as interesting skills seminars with the corporate partners ensure that I am now equipped with

the right balance of practical and theoretical knowledge.

Having the opportunity to work as the Student Board Representative from NOVA SBE, together with the representatives

from all the other schools in the program, is an example of the CEMS SPIRIT where the diversity among international

teams with over 20 different nationalities brings results!

I can definitely say that last year was one of the most exciting and challenging years for me as a student that I would

recommend to all of you that want to start your career with an international path!

    Carlota Cabral

MIM at NOVA, Term 1 Stockholm School of Economics

& Co., IES, Millennium BCP and EDP.The event also included a Tedx-

like talk, with the presence of two

    prominent (social) entrepreneurs

    who shared their experiences with

    the participants.

The event had participants of over

    20 nationalities coming from almost

    all CEMS Schools and besides

    its formal events and outputs,

    networking ended up being an

utterly relevant outcome. Next year, the event will be held in Milan, by

the CEMS Club of Universit Luigi

    Bocconi.

    Alumni Association

The CEMS Alumni Association (CAA) is

    the continuation of CEMS graduates

    multicultural experience. Founded

in 1993 by a group of graduates, the

Association is unique in that it is a

    truly international network whose

    members maintain lasting contact

with each other, while living and

    working throughout the world. Since

    its creation, the Association has

    pursued three main goals:

    - Promote the CEMS MIM and theCEMS experience generally

    - Create and maintain friendly,

    lasting contacts among Alumni

    - Provide a professional network

    and opportunities for its members

    18

    CEMS Annual Events and Career

    Forum

The CEMS Career Forum is a

highlight event of the CEMS year.

    Students are pre-selected for

    interviews with Corporate Partners

before the event. Students with at

    least one pre-scheduled interview

are eligible for subsidized travel to

    the event.

In addition to the Career Forum,

each year at the end of November/ beginning of December, several

CEMS events are organized over a

    four-day period: The Executive Board

    meeting, the Student Board meeting,

    the Alumni Association meeting and

    the Graduation Ceremony for the

    MIM graduates.

In December 2011 NOVA will host the

    Annual Events that gathers around

    1000-1500 persons working for and

with CEMS in different positions:students, academics, and corporate

    representatives.
