MENSAGEM DO PRESIDENTE DA FIVB

Presidente da Fédération Internationale de Volleyball

The Volleyball Nations League returns for its second
season and promises to bring just as much excitement,
drama and intrigue as last year! It was just 12 months ago
when the volleyball family held its breath to witness one of
the FIVB’s most highly anticipated events in recent history,
and the VNL did not disappoint.
As the FIVB’s most innovative competition, 16 world class
national teams from each gender competed for the
inaugural VNL title. More than 35 cities from 20 countries
hosted stages of the event, as each nation took part in a
round robin competition, before the top six qualified for
the VNL Finals. The USA championed in the Women’s
event whilst Russia beat hosts France to lift the men’s
trophy.
One year on and the VNL continues to bring world class
action closer to volleyball fans across the globe. The VNL
is completely equal for men and women in terms of format
and prize money, and supports the FIVB’s commitment to
gender equality in volleyball.
Only the world’s best teams are selected for the VNL, so
even getting to this stage is competitive! Playing in a round
robin format means that each country will have to see off
their rivals for the chance to make the VNL Finals and be
crowned Volleyball Nations League champion. Each week,
different countries host a pool stage, giving more fans than
ever before the opportunity to watch and enjoy elite-level
volleyball in their home nation. Currently ranked world
number one, Brazil are the team to beat in the men’s
competition, while Serbia top the women’s rankings.
The FIVB’s partnership with IMG to control the content
production from each match has been an integral part of
the VNL, enhancing the quality of our broadcasting around
the world and ensuring that volleyball fans across the
globe never miss a moment!
Volleyball continues to lead the way in fan entertainment,
utilising the most innovative sports presentation and
creating new ways for spectators to engage, not only with
each match and the athletes but with other fans
worldwide.
I wish all teams competing in this year’s VNL the very best
of luck as they pursue their dream of becoming champion
for their nation. I have no doubt that every athlete will
show the skill, determination and team work that is
needed to win, and that embodies the true spirit of
volleyball.
Dr. Ary S. Graça F°
FIVB President
campeões no evento feminino, enquanto a Rússia
voleibol.
O voleibol continua a liderar o caminho no entretenimento
atleta mostrará a habilidade, a determinação e o trabalho
espírito do voleibol.

Gondomar City Hall President
Presidente da Câmara Municipal de Gondomar

Gondomar hosts, from June 14 to 16, Group 9 of the
Men's Volleyball Nations League, bringing to our county
the best national teams and players of the present time.
As a result of the partnership between the Portuguese
Volleyball Federation and the Municipality of Gondomar,
Multiusos will be the scene of the matches between the
Portuguese national team and their counterparts of Brazil,
China and Serbia. After having already hosted, in January,
the European qualifying pools for the European Women's
and Men's Senior Championships, Gondomar will again be
the capital of one of the preferred sports of Gondomar
inhabitants and national public.
The Volleyball Nations League is the most important
competition in the world, played by 12 national teams -
Germany, Argentina, Brazil, China, USA, France, Japan,
Iran, Italy, Poland, Russia and Serbia - and four
challengers ( "Challenger teams"), in this case Australia,
Bulgaria, Canada and Portugal. For five weeks, the teams
will compete for the final phase, which will be held this
July 10-14 in Chicago, United States.
Hosting such an important competition is an honor and a
challenge that we accept with confidence. The trust of a
Municipality that bet on the support and promotion of
sport, obtaining in 2017 the international recognition of
this bet, with the choice of Gondomar for European City of
Sport.
We believe that more physical activity is synonymous with
more health, more well-being and more inclusion, so we
continue to channel all our synergies to create and
improve the conditions of sports in the county.
On behalf of all Gondomar inhabitants I welcome the
participating teams, the delegates of the International
Volleyball Federation, the international referees and all
those who visit us during the event. I am sure of the
success of the event, demonstrating once again that
"Gondomar é D'Ouro" (Gondomar is Douro).
Dr. Marco Martins
GCH President
femininos e masculinos, Gondomar será novamente a
e Sérvia – e quatro desafiadoras (“challenger teams”),
neste caso a Austrália, a Bulgária, o Canadá e Portugal.
Durante cinco semanas, as seleções disputarão o acesso à
no concelho.

THE EVENT - O EVENTO
Following a spectacular and highly successful inaugural
season in 2018, which saw Russia’s men and USA’s
women pick up the first gold medals to be awarded, the
FIVB Volleyball Nations League enters its second edition in
2019 with high expectations for another remarkable
couple of months of amazing volleyball action around the
world.
Carrying on from last year’s successful competition, the
2019 FIVB Volleyball Nations League continues on the
same format of 12 core teams and 4 challenger teams per
gender.
The top five teams at the end of the Preliminary Round
join the hosts of the Finals to fight for the ultimate prize.
The women’s finals will be held in China 3-7 July, with the
men’s following a week later 10-14 July in the USA.
Last year in Lille Russia beat hosts France for the men’s
gold medal, while USA outplayed Brazil for bronze. In the
women’s competition in Nanjing, USA overcame Turkey in
the final and hosts China picked up bronze with a win over
Brazil.
The whole competition totals 260 matches – 130 per
gender across the almost two-month duration. With an
identical format for men and women, the Volleyball
Nations League promotes equality in volleyball, while also
making it simpler and more engaging to follow.
voleibol a nível mundial.
EUA venceram o Brasil, conseguindo o bronze.
femininos, a VNL promove a igualdade no Voleibol,
tornando-o ao mesmo tempo mais simples e
entusiasmante de seguir.
