The Federal University of São Paulo, traditionally known as the São Paulo School of Medicine, has been offering, after its expansion in 2006, courses in all areas of knowledge, spread over six campuses: Santos, Diadema, Guarulhos, Osasco, São José dos Campos and São Paulo (Vila Clementino). In all the-se cities, the partnership between the federal and the city governments has ensured the gradual instal-lation of the necessary equipment for the development of teaching, research and extension. The absolute majority of university professors are doctors, researchers recognized in their areas of specialty, which provides an unparalleled dynamism in the development of cultural and research ac-tivities through the intensive exchange with other educational institutions both in the country and abroad.

The research projects developed by the professors of the courses offer the possibility of integrating students through research initiation scholarships.

Teaching initiation scholarship, for undergraduate studies, through the PIBID initiative, which offers, since the beginning of the courses, the opportunity to experience real teaching situations at partner public schools (this is not a curricular internship).

Scholarships for University Extension Projects, in various areas such as disease prevention, cultural initiatives (theater, dance), support to events. Possibility of having international experiences, at Euro-pean and Latin American universities, through the Program “Science Without Borders” and other ini-tiatives, as a result of international agreements that Unifesp signed with other institutions.

The university experience provided by Unifesp includes numerous cultural and sporting events, stu-dy groups, as well as equipped and continuously updated teaching laboratories and libraries. In some cases, the construction of the facilities to support courses is still in progress, but the University is com-mitted to ensuring proper operating conditions for undergraduate courses. Given its main objective, as to know, to contribute to the expansion and dissemination of scientific and academic knowledge in Brazilian society and considering that the personal value of students can only be explored if there are minimum conditions of safety and quality of life, the University has a network of initiatives to ensu-re the conditions for students to continue studying, coordinated by the Vice Dean of Student Affairs, with housing, food, transportation and child care assistance.

Admission to courses offered by UNIFESP may be of several ways, according to the course: through a mixed system (SiSU and admission exam) and only through SISU (Universal Selection System). Plea-se check the link of Unifesp (http://www.unifesp.br/reitoria/vestibular/) for more information on ad-missions to the course of your choice, and the campus in which it is offered.

Computational MathematicsBachelor’s Degree

São José dos Campos Campus

About the course:The course was created in 2009 by the Institu-te of Science and Technology of UNIFESP and is currently an option for a Bachelor’s Degree in Science and Technology. It was the second to be created in São José as it has a current and tech-nological profile, highly consistent with what is expected from the Institute of Science and Te-chnology, which is located in one of the grea-test technological innovation centers of the cou-ntry. Graduates in Computational Mathematics shall have the ability to understand and formu-late mathematical models of various applied si-tuations. Graduates shall be able to analyze and find solutions of these models with the assistan-ce of numerical methods and software tools. The construction and development of such methods is a fundamental part of the course, which teach students not only on how to use these tools, but to be transforming agents. To do this, students must have a solid foundation of the theory of ma-thematics, complemented with the mastering of the most modern topics of Applied Mathemati-cs, mainly related to Computing, but also physi-cs and statistics. Academic Activities: Final term paper (mandatory) and others (internship, IC,...) are strongly encouraged. Main courses:These are divided into 3 groups: Basic courses of Mathematics and Computer Science: Calculus, Analytical Geometry, Programming Logistics... theoretical Mathematics course: Analysis and advanced Linear Algebra... Computational Ma-thematics courses: Optimization and Numerical Methods for Differential Equations...

Vacancies: 50Duration: 8 semesters Periods: Full-time

Job Market:The market for applied mathematicians has gro-wn considerably in Brazil. Several companies are looking for professionals able to mathematically model real problems and solve them, often using software specifically developed for this. They can also work with researches or teach at higher edu-cation institutions.

Course Differential:The interdisciplinary profile inherited from the science and technology course during the first cycle and the possibility of using the concepts learned in different areas of knowledge are the differentials of this course. With the strong edu-cation provided in the course and the lack of qua-lified professionals in the area, there are excel-lent career opportunities for graduates.
