There once was a fear in the land: that machines would eventually replacepeople, that all the functions performed by hard-working men and women would betaken over by faceless, soulless mechanical devices.

Well, its happened not completely, but its happened. The reason we dontdiscuss it at all that often is that instead of hating what has taken place, Americansseem to like it. The fear, it appears, was unfounded. The machines took over andtheywere embraced like new lovers.

You see it everyday. On airplanes and on pay phones, businessmen andbusinesswomen conduct their on-the-road tasks without having to speak to a singlehuman being.

Whats instructive about this is not simply that its happening but that, moreand more, people appear to prefer dealing with machines to dealing with other people. You can see it in the faces at the pay phones human beings on the other end of theline tend to waste time with idle chatter, tend to ask questions and misunderstand whatis said and require names and numbers to be repeated. Its so much more precise, doing business with a machine.

This has evolved over the last 15 or 20 years. At first people were exasperatedto reach automatic phone systems they felt lost, anonymous. Now the machines arebeginning to seem like friends, eager-to-please and efficient.

People who were angry when the machines first began to dominate our worldhave been soothed not only into submission, but into approval. The cash machines thatseemed so strange and forbidding are now accepted as vastly preferable to bank tellerswho can make mistakes and take coffee breaks and not be able to find your account

number. The automated voice recordings that tell you how many miles you have in yourfrequent-flier program are much speedier than human airline employees; when youmake a credit-card phone call it is so much quicker to just punch your number ininstead of telling itto an operator, the old way.

Machines and the coded data within themare never late to work; machines andtheir data never have grumpy days. Machines, with their digital voices, seem alwaysglad to serve you. Machines are accurate and intelligent and to the point. When youdeal with a machine, as opposed to dealing with a human, you can be sure the machinedoes not wish it was somewhere else, doing something else.

A frightening thought? That all of this can be true? Its not the machines that arefrightening. Its that we have learned to be happily married to them.
