Large gradient angles can be achieved even for heavy-duty loads and when products conveyed are wet.

Unloading belt for 40 tons of hard coal. It took Siegling Transtex to make this compact conveyor design possible.

Siegling Transtex beats past capabilitiesGlobal logistics service providers have been using Siegling Transtex successfully for years when typical conveyor belts for light-materials handling reached their limits. They have also proved how good they are in conveying raw materials, very heavy unit goods and sharp components, as well as coping with tough production conditions.

Siegling Transtex sometimes surpasses even rubber and steel belts. In wind and extreme weather conditions, high temperatures and unusual mechanical stress, steel and rubber conveyor belts were the first choice for a long time.

Siegling Transtex is the ideal alternative for many applications – with all the benefits of fabric-based conveyor belts:

– easy to make endless– low energy consumption– simple conveyor design – low maintenance and repair costs

In the past, due to a lack of space alone, very robust belts could often not be used. Siegling Transtex now makes very compact conveyors possible. And in terms of technology, new perspectives are opened up as a result, some of which include truck unload-ing belts, packaging machinery for coils, punch presses and outdoor machinery, e.g. in wood processing.

Siegling Transtex: Heavy-duty specialistsConveying heavy-duty products presents huge challenges to the conveyor belts used. With four product series, the Siegling Transtex range offers top performance in the most diverse of applications.

Horizontal conveying

Even a conveying task which seems quite simple can require a whole host of belt properties. Forbo Siegling has the best belt type for various goods, conveying speeds, reversing systems, stop & go and accumulation conveying, and other operating conditions. Some examples of the diverse features of Siegling Transilon include:

– troughable to particularly laterally stiff types

– exceptionally low-noise to flame-retardant

– pyrolysis-resistant to suitability for conveying unpackaged food

– non-antistatic to highly conductive and ATEX-approved

– surfaces suitable for accumulation conveying and especially good grip.

flexibility in the desired direction.

Collecting belt in check-in area of an airport. The flatness of the belt type here ensures that the goods can be discharged to the side smoothly, even on wide belts. Flame-retardance is a “must” in modern airports.

Belts for telescopic conveyors – here being used to unload lorries – must be designed to run with counter bending and at the same time, to withstand high punctual loads.

Inclined conveying

Goods can be conveyed at an incline even on smooth belt surfaces. The con-veying angle is dependent on a variety of factors such as the type of goods being conveyed, the top face coating and external factors like dust, moisture, etc.

For large conveying angles and for the conveying of small pieces and bulk goods, Forbo Siegling offers patterned belts or belts equipped with lateral profiles.

Inclined conveying in the tobacco industry. In this area, conveying angles of up to 22° are possible for belt types with smooth surfaces.

Curved conveying

Curved belts from Forbo Siegling are suitable for use in conjunction with a diverse array of belt tracking systems and are in use on the conveyors of numerous major manu facturers.

Thanks to largely-automated fabrication, we guarantee strict adherence to the geometrical shapes and dimensions required when supplying finished belts.

Dividing curves into several segments makes for a favourable distribution of force vectors in the belt so even heavy goods can be carried without any problems.

Spiral curve in the confectionery industry. Curved conveyor in a distribution centre.

Collection and distribution

When pushers and ploughs are used, the belt’s laterally stiff design guarantees that it will lie flat and continue to run in a straight line reliably. The lateral loading and discharge of goods is achieved by using very smooth, wear-resistant surfaces. Lateral sorters (e.g. carrier cells), on the other hand, require very thin, flexible belts whose sur-faces have high coefficients of friction. Their special tension member construction means that they have very low energy consumption.

Processing belts

With Siegling Transilon, the gap is often bridged between the classical conveying function from “A” to “B” and an active function in the production process.

For example, in the textile industry our processing belts stack thin layers of web, in large bakeries they form balls of dough, in the wood industry they compress chip mat in the pre-press, in dairies milk is coagulated on the belts to form cheese. Here are just a few examples of process operations.

Cross-lapping of web layers in the nonwoven industry. High production speed and accele ration of masses while the web is guided directly between the belts places extremely high demands on the processing belts.

In large bakeries balls of dough are formed as a result of differing belt speeds.

Lateral sorter in a distribution centre. The high acceleration requires the belt surface to have an extremely high coefficient of friction.

Pre-press belt in the manufacture of particle boards. The particle mat is pre-pressed while being conveyed.

Special processing

Perforations

It is possible to maintain very narrow tolerances for practically any pattern of per forations in Siegling Transilon material. (Belt material with perforations can not be used for form-fit transmission of power.)

Belt edge sealing Belt edge sealing prevents oil, grease, water, foreign bodies and bacteria from penetrating the belt. At the same time, it increases the service life of the conveyor belt.

This additional predection can be applied to virtually every Siegling Transilon con-veyor belt.

Profiles/Sidewalls

Conveyor belts with profiles are used for the inclined and declined conveying of bulk goods and small pieces. Profiles are available in various shapes and sizes and can in some cases be supplied as roll material. To contain goods on the sides when conveying bulk goods, sidewall profiles are used – often in conjunction with lateral profiles.

Numerous combinations of tension member-design and coating design are possible. But certain conveying and processing tasks require more: mechanical, physical or chemical belt properties which can be provided only by special production processes, combinations of materials and/or finishing (see next pages).

Brochures 317 and 318 provide information about storing, finishing and fitting, as well as special features and properties. Further information on request.

Patterns

Forbo Siegling has developed and optimised a wide range of surface patterns for very different applications. The appropriately optimised surface patterns ensure for example, ideal grip with demanding goods such as roller suitcases and good release properties with dough and are also used to emboss manufacturer-specific patterns on the under side of chocolate.

Siegling Transilon patterned belts can run at incline angles of up to 30° without profiles. For larger incline angles they can also be fitted with profiles and sidewalls (see previous pages).

Electrical properties

In numerous conveying and processing functions, the electrical properties of the belt material are important for smooth operation. As a standard, Siegling Transilon belts are equipped with a conductive tension member which prevents electrostatic build-up in the belt.Siegling Transilon non-antistatic belts (NA) are not electrically conductive. They facilitate special engineering solutions for produc tion conveyors where high frequencies are used or regulation is carried out electro-magnetically e.g. in security screening and in quality control.Siegling Transilon highly conductive belts (HC) can also divert electro-static build-up in the goods conveyed because of their highly conductive coating and/or the tension member. For the safe con-veying of elec trical components and other electronically sensitive goods.

Types of splices

Hot-pressing

A hot-pressed splice provides the highest durability and flexibility. Following types are available:

■ Z-spliceMeets the most rigorous of requirements for uniformity of thickness. Very flexible splice, required particularly for knife edge belts. Standard splice for 1 and 2-ply belt-types.

■ Stepped Z-spliceProperties comparable to those of the Z-splice. Also suitable for rugged operating conditions (e.g. soiled drums). Possible for various 2 and 3-ply belt types.

■ Wedge spliceSplice type for solid-woven fabric and NOVO types.

■ Stepped overlap spliceEspecially for 2 and 3-ply belt types with duroplastic coatings.

Cold-pressing

It is possible to cold-press wedge or stepped overlap splices in independent fitting repair jobs on site. Please note that such splices have limited strength and flexibility.

Mechanical fasteners

Mechanical fasteners make it possible to

– quickly fit and remove the belt without disassembling machine components,

– repair a belt at short notice by inserting a piece of belt material,

– make belts endless quickly and easily

(please inquire about lacers).

Following fasteners are available:

■ Wire hook fasteners (HS)

■ Clamp fasteners (CS)

■ Plastic fasteners (KS), also available optionally imbedded or heated into the belt coating.

➄ Wire hook fastener ➅ Clamp fastener ➆ Plastic fastener

➀ Z-splice ➁ Stepped Z-splice ➂ Wedge splice ➃ Stepped-overlap splice

The splicing method appropriate for individual applications is dependent on the belt types used and the prevailing operating conditions. In addition to splice reliability, flexibility of the splice and the effort required for fabrication are decisive criteria for the selection of the splicing method.Detailed instructions for all splicing procedures are available on request.

* Established in line with ISO 21181:2005

** The smallest permissible drum diameters were established at room temperature with z-splices and counter bending and do not apply to conveyor belts with mechanical fasteners. Lower temperatures, profiles and side walls can require larger drum diameters. On this point, see our brochure “Technical information 2” (ref. no. 318). r 3, r 5 or r 10 on the other hand, state the radius of a knife edge.

*** E = (EU) 10/2011 and (EC) 1935/2004, F = Compliant to FDA 21 CFR, H = Halal certified

**** P = Proseal, S = Smartseal

** The smallest permissible drum diameters were established at room temperature with z-splices and counter bending and do not apply to conveyor belts with mechanical fasteners. Lower temperatures, profiles and side walls can require larger drum diameters. On this point, see our brochure “Technical information 2” (ref. no. 318). r 3, r 5 or r 10 on the other hand, state the radius of a knife edge.

*** E = (EU) 10/2011 and (EC) 1935/2004, F = Compliant to FDA 21 CFR, H = Halal certified

Product range

Truly endless belts 10

Different materials for the friction and top coating are combined with one of the three tension member materials

– A (aramide – also truly endless)– E (polyester – also truly endless) or– P (polyamide)

Producing a varied range with ideal properties for each and every application.

Siegling Extremultus power transmission belts are durable, extremely tough, elas-tic, absorb vibrations and shocks and can be used at belt velocities of up to 100 m/s.

Compared with other power transmission belts, they are easy to handle, extremely efficient and have a high level of synchro-nisation accuracy.

Apart from traditional pulleys, they can easily handle bevel and cone drives and drive several shafts, even in different rotational directions.

More information on Siegling Extremultus flat belts can be found in the following brochures:

➀ ➁ ➂ ➃

➀ Classical two-pulley drive➁ Multiple pulley drive➂ Taper-cone drive➃ Mule drive

In addition to other advantages, flat belts are much more efficient than V-belts. In V-belts, energy losses occur, not just due to flexing in the material, but also due to friction at the sides and other aspects associated with the belt design.

Efficiency of a flat belt (top), efficiency of a V-belt (bottom). Siegling Extremultus flat belts have an efficiency of 98.6 %.

Friction on the sides at the top and bottom, internal friction losses due to hysteresis.

Urethane (U)The urethane friction layer U is mainly used for drives. Thanks to its low thickness, it is especially well-suited for extreme flexing stress.

Friction/top layer properties

Elastomer G (G)The friction coating elastomer G is used for all standard drives, also wherever dust and moisture are a factor. Not recommended when oil and grease are present (e.g. oil vapour).

No splice, as truly endless

Power transmission belts with truly endless polyester or aramide cord tension members require short take-up ranges, can transmit high specific levels of effective pull and are not sensitive to fluctuations in ambient conditions. Because they are very flexible and track very steadily and evenly, they are an excellent choice for high levels of power transmission (> 60 m/s) and multiple rotations.

Technical data

Legend

* The smallest permissible pulley diameters were established in standard ambient conditions (23 °C, 50 % rel. humidity). Lower temperatures require larger drum diameters. For the P line, this also applies in the case of low humidity.

Recommended dmin for power transmission:

A line: 2.5 x type number E line: 2 x type number

P line: 5 x type number (7 x type number at relative humidity < 40 %)

Supplied as

– Roll material for customers to finish themselves

– Prepared belts for on-site heating of splices. Please state the type of splice you require, sizes and any pre-tension required. Please contact us about belts lengths < 450 mm and >125 m

– Special types with perforation or sawn edges (in the P line) on request

** The nominal effective pull states the possible power transmission in N/mm belt width (standard ambient conditions 23 °C/50 % rel. humidity) that the belt type can produce at nominal elongation.

*** If temperatures are exceeded, please contact Forbo Siegling application engineers.

Special properties/resistances (all lines)

Siegling Extremultus is antistatic.

Truly endless types cannot be lengthened, shortened or repaired.

The Siegling Extremultus GT and GG types are not sensitive to oils and greases, as well as commonly-available solvents. However using in oily or greasy conditions (e.g. oil vapour) is not to be recommended (risk of the belt slipping – if possible use LT or LL types).

The Siegling Extremultus sub-types LL, LT and UU are impervious to machine oils, diesel fuels, petrol, benzene, commercially available solvents such as ethyl acetate, acetone, etc.; chlorinated hydrocarbons such as perchloroethylene, etc.

Siegling Extremultus is not resistant to organic and inorganic acids.

For further details, see the Siegling Extremultus – Technical information brochure (ref. no. 316).

Measuring and cutting to length

The required belt length is determined by placing a string or something similar around the two pulleys in the groove and then measuring the string.

In the case of a non-adjustable centre distance, the pre-tension of 6 – 8 % must be subtracted from the measured length (see product range table).

For an adjustable centre distance, make reference marks on the belts and then tension according to the elongation required.

Endless splicing

The more affordably-priced standard combi set includes a soldering iron with no temperature control.

The TC combi set includes a soldering iron with adjustable temperature control. The powerful soldering iron heats up in just approx. 90 seconds and maintains the temperature that is adjustable on the rotating head.

Further details about endless splicing for Siegling Transilon round belts can be found in the instructions at www.bienefeld-gmbh.de/endlos-verbindung.html

Pressure clamps for round belts with rapid tensioning lever (left) and screw clamp (right)

Any dimensions can be quickly spliced endless using very simple tools.

Our handy round belt press pliers (RPZ) can be obtained separately or in the practical combi set with all accessories necessary for reliable and time-saving endless splicing (for use with diameters from 3 – 15 mm).

The RPZ can be supplied in two versions:

– with screw clamp: in this case the ends of the round belt are clamped with knurled screws

– with rapid tensioning lever: in this case the ends of the round belt are clamped by moving the tensioning lever. After welding, the belt is released by flipping open the rapid tensioning clamps. The diameter required of round belt is pre- adjusted (converting to another diameter takes approx. 60 secs.).

Combi set TC – here includes pressure clamp for round belts with rapid tension-ing lever

As form-fit power-transmission and conveying components, Siegling Proposition timing belts complement the established family of Siegling Transilon conveying and processing belts. Our vast experience in light materials handling guarantees superb product quality, in-depth support and fast service.

Siegling Proposition high-efficiency timing belts are made of high-quality poly-urethane with an embedded tension member made of steel cord or Kevlar. Thanks to their low mass and extreme tensile strength, they are quiet to operate and require virtually no maintenance. These characteristics make them ideal for demanding tasks like accelerating and braking, as well as for exact positioning.

A wide range of coatings, patterns and profiles can be applied to standard timing belts. They can be modified even further by adding perforations, milling and grinding. As a result, the belts are true specialists when dealing with conveying, power-transmission or handling jobs.

Cams and profiles For conveying and many more specialised tasks in material handling (interval conveying, singling, positioning), cams and profiles pave the way for innovative design solutions. In addition to a number of standard cams from half-finished products, any special shapes can be made as injection moulded parts.

For detailed technical information visit www.forbo-siegling.com

Welded cams Cams are usually made of polyurethane – as are the timing belts themselves, ensuring the reliability of the weld bet-ween the cam and the reverse face of the timing belt. The welding of cams onto a timing belt affects its flexibility. The smallest possible cam thickness (t) should be selected. If possible, cams should be attached “opposite teeth”.

Screwed-on cams Cams that are screwed on are particularly flexible to use. The original teeth on the belts are removed and replaced with brass teeth with threads. Brass teeth are available in T10/ AT10, T20, AT20 and XH tooth shapes. (Standard widths: 25/32/50; further widths on request).

10

Coatings

Various coatings can be applied to all standard Siegling Proposition types.

On the toothed and/or reverse face, coverings of polyamid fabric reduce the drag. This facilitates the intermeshing of the teeth, in turn reducing the noise.

Other coverings and coatings for the reverse face, varying in material and texture considerably,

– increase the drag, thereby improving the grip properties (pick-off belts, inclined conveyors)

– conform to FDA regulations (processing of food)

– protect the surface of sensitive goods (glass, furniture)

– are largely unaffected by rough goods or goods with sharp edges thanks to their tenacity (sheet metal, wood).

For the types PAZ and PAZ/PAR (below) the polyamide fabric is applied during the produc tion of the timing belt. There-fore their sizes correspond to those of the standard types.

PAZMaterial: polyamide fabric (toothed face)Characteristic/application: low drag, protects against wear, reduces noise

PAZ/PARMaterial: polyamide fabric (on both faces) Characteristic/application: low drag, protects against wear, reduces noise

Customised productsBy modifying timing belts with and without coatings or coverings afterwards, it is possible to tailor them exactly to meet the needs of individual applications in materials handling. Because of the wide array of possibilities and combinations, we can show you here just a very small selection. Please contact your Forbo Siegling partner regarding any specific require ments you may have.

Mechanical processing Almost any shape can be milled, ground or punch-cut into timing belts and coat-ings or coverings with very narrow toler-ances. CNC-powered machines and water jets are used.

Special colours

Timing belts (as well as cams) can be produced in special colours.

Special coatings and coverings It is possible to apply an extra covering of PA fabric afterwards – also to sections which have been milled – to improve the low grip properties.

Truly endless belts

Information about truly endless belts (polyurethane and neoprene) is available on request.

Longitudinal tracking profiles

The wedge profiles mounted on the timing belts ensure that the belts track perfectly straight over the entire length, even where lateral forces are a factor. Flanged pulleys are not required. All timing belt types can be equipped with various wedge profiles.

For the service life of the timing belt and for smooth operations, it is vital that the toothed pulley be matched correctly to the timing belt.

For all timing belts in its product range, Forbo Siegling carries the corresponding toothed pulley.

Open Siegling Proposition timing belts are made endless with a meander or Z-splice. Although with this splice approximately 50% of the tensile strength of truly endless timing belts is achieved, such belts should not be used as power transmission belts.

Endless splices

Toothed pulleys for timing belts

Accessories

Clamping plates Clamping plates for fastening open material are available for all timing belt types and in all standard sizes.

Welded splices Timing belts prepared for the meander splice can be hot-pressed endless quickly and easily on-site with our heating devices. This process makes time-consuming fitting work on the machine unnecessary.

The SMX-HP 150/120-PP and SMX-HP 150/60-PP heating presses can be used (with the corresponding splice guide) for all timing belts of all widths.
