paintings of saints of theBenedictine Order.
Most of those paintings, rendered between 1670 and1688, were done by a thirdartist monk, painter FriarRicardo do Pilar. They werepreserved during a furtherrenovation of the chanceldone in Rococo style, alongwith the splendid images ofOur Lady of Montserrat andfounders Saint Benedict andSaint Scholastica, from theretable of Friar Domingos daConceição. Despite thedecease of Friar Domingos, in1718, the carving works werecarried out by other sculptors, noticeably Portuguese Simãoda Cunha, originating fromBraga, who authored theimages of Benedictine saints
The invocation of Our Lady ofMontserrat, patron of theBenedictines, hails from Catalonia,Spain. Her name derives from theplace where the primitive imagewas found – a mountain with asaw-shaped profile (“serra” meanssaw in Catalan). She isrepresented with the Child Jesuson her lap, seated in a thronesituated on the mountain, withtwo angels and a saw at its basis. Those attributes, however, are notfeatured in the beautiful imageproduced between 1677 and1678 by sculptor monk FriarDomingos da Conceição.

The third stylisticmoment of thedecoration of São BentoMonastery is that of thechancel and crossing archrenovation in the Rococostyle, undertaken between1788 and 1794 by carverInácio Ferreira Pinto. Thehighlight is the retablewith twisted-shaftcolumns that occupiesthe entire backgroundwall, having at its centera monumental five-stairsthrone and, on top, theVirgin of Montserrat, patron of the church.Typical of theBenedictine Order, goodsense allied with goodtaste has determined

The same principle wasobserved in the crossing andin the Santíssimo Sacramentochapel, to the left, the latterbuilt and decorated between1795 and 1800, undoubtedlyone of the most refined spacesof carioca Rococo.
Mannerism, Baroque andRococo are thereforeintegrated in perfect symbiosisin the decoration of São BentoMonastery, a true display ofthe many phases ofPortuguese-Brazilian carvingstyle, leaving out only JoanineBaroque. There are sometraces of this style, such as thetwisted-shaft column in thenave retables, but thosebelong, in reality, to theFrench Regency style, asshown by the guilloche plaidand flat arabesques in thepilasters.
The devotions on theseretables are, from the entrance,Saint Blaise, Saint Gertrude,Saint Lawrence and Our Ladyof the Conception, to the right, and, to the left, Saint Cajetan,Our Lady of the Pillar and SaintAmaro. The last retable on thatside, dedicated to SaintChristopher, was removed tomake room for the present

represent three distinct stylesthat may be associated withMannerism, Baroque andRococo, present inPortuguese-Brazilian religiousimagery.
The images of the foundersaints and that of Our Lady ofMontserrat have their date andauthorship proven withdocuments as a result of thegreat Benedictine historian D.Clemente da Silva Nigra’sresearch. They were producedin the years of 1677 and 1678by the abovementioned FriarDomingos da Conceição, whohailed from Matozinhos, asuburb of the city of Oporto. This sculptor was alreadyworking in the monastery inRio de Janeiro when he was nomore than 20 years old, andeventually became a monkthere at the age of 47.
A third image among theones currently exhibited in thechurch has close features tothose of Friar Domingos’. It isSaint Christopher, taken fromthe demolished retable, nowadays shown in thebaptismal room, accessedthrough the left from thechurch’s entrance. Given thatFriar Domingos was working on

The tapa-vento (“wind cover”) atSão Bento Monastery is undoubtedlythe most spectacular among thechurches in Rio de Janeiro. Besidesits windbreak function, essential atthe time when the church’s lightingwas provided by candles, thatimportant complement to thechurch’s carving works is still todayemployed during solemn liturgicalservices, when the doors, initiallyclosed, are opened for the passageof processions. Produced between1733 and 1736, it features adouble-faced coat of arms withBenedictine symbols, presented byangels with victory palms.

The initiative of building achurch dedicated to thepopular Saint Rita of Cascia isowed to Manuel NascentePinto and his wife, a couplefrom the bishopric of Oporto, who were said to own theprimitive sculpture andpaintings of the saint, currentlyin exhibition in the sacristy. The church still stands outin an open area, theremaining reduction of theold Santa Rita Square, as canbe seen on the drawings byThomas Ender and other 19th

Its façade ofgreat sobriety, nevertheless, presents some dynamicelements such as the revertedcurve of the cornice belowthe oculus and the sinuouspediment, internallydecorated with an arabesquecross and floral motifs. Abovethe Neoclassical doorway thatreplaced, in the last century, the Baroque one seen on oldengravings, there is a looseelement in the façade, a smallmedallion with the patron’seffigy, originally integrated tothe doorway niche. To the left,a bell tower with doublearcade complements thefrontispiece, and, oddlyenough, the Brotherhoods didnot manage to build a secondtower to the right when theprimitive Chapel of Santa Ritarose to the dignity of motherchurch in 1753.

The church that currentlybears the name of NossaSenhora do Terço wasoriginally the chapel of Senhordos Passos, which named thestreet. Built around 1737through the private initiative ofa priest, there was never aBrotherhood associated to it,so it became property of thebishopric in 1829. Around thattime, it still lacked the lateralsteeple, having only a smallcampanile, as recorded byLuiz Gonçalves dos Santos inhis memoirs.
The present overall aspectof the church dates back froma renovation that started in1842, when it was donated tothe Brotherhood of Our Ladyof the Chaplet, that waspreviously the devotion of oneof the altars at the church ofSão José. Despite the changein the church’s patron, theimage of the Lord of theStations continued to occupythe place of honor, on top ofthe throne of the main altar,

The elegant imageof church of SantíssimoSacramento follows the saint’stypology of the weighing of soulsin the day of the Last Judgment. His appearance is young, he iswinged and standing on clouds, holding in his right hand thecruciform banner and in the left, the scale with two figuresrepresenting the souls.

Ornamental themes ofNeoclassical inspiration werealso used in the façade, likethe frames of the lateral doorsand the design of thepediment’s volutes, transformed into a straightGreek style. Like so many otherhermitages built out of thefaithful will of the firstdwellers of the land, that ofNossa Senhora da Glória, located in a knoll by thesame name, was constructedaround 1671 by PortugueseAntônio Caminha, born inAveiro. The present polygonalplan church dates from theperiod between 1714 and1739. It is possible that amilitary engineer designed it,like other Brazilian churchesas the same typology. However, this singular churchis the only one in Brazilwhose polygonal shape, consisting of two elongateoctagons, can be entirelyidentified from the exterior, where the meeting points ofthe planes are accentuatedby thin pilasters crowned bygablets.

The sculpture enthroned in thechurch of Nossa Senhora daGlória do Outeiro is an articulatedprocession image with natural hairand vestments. Possibly from theend of the 18th century, its mostevident feature is the ostentation ofthe vestments, with rich clothingand jewelry, a tradition that gainedstrength in the 19th century, whenthe emperors became great Virginof Glory devotees. The title“Glory” refers to the gloriousascension of the Virgin to theHeavens, where she was crownedby the Father, the Son and theHoly Spirit. Hence her beingrepresented with a sceptre and thecrown, as well as the greatopulence in vestments.

The theme of the scenesrepresented within the rich tileframes of the nave and chancelof the church continues to bafflethe experts. The more commonlyaccepted hypothesis is thatthey’re illustrations of the longBiblical poem known as Song ofSongs that narrates the story ofthe idyllic love encounters ofshepherdess Shulamite with ayoung shepherd. The angel thatalways accompanies theenamored lad could be thepersonification of divine love, with the profane love counterpartrepresented by cupid figures withbow and arrow. As for thesacristy and access corridors, there are tile works illustratinghunting scenes without religiouscontent. The ones in the highchoir, on the contrary, representbiblical characters, whose namesare indicated in Latin bycaptions.
