Initiating Services

Intake

• Student must call 312.567.7550 to schedule an intake appointment.• Student will complete required paperwork and have an intake interview

with a clinician.

Disposition

• During our weekly meeting we will discuss recommendations for in-house or off campus referrals.

• Students who will be seen by SHWC are assigned to a therapist and then contacted by that individual to set up an appointment.

Ongoing Services

• Student and their assigned therapist will negotiate goals, frequency, and duration of treatment.

• Students may also participate in group therapy or psychiatry services as appropriate.

Students in Crisis

Students experiencing an acute crises may walk in to SHWC at any time.

We have triage hours set aside at 11am and 3pm Monday through Friday. If a student is in crisis, we attempt to accommodate them

whenever they come into the office.

During a crisis appointment, students are assessed for risk of harm to self and others. Based on this assessment, appropriate next steps are taken.

– IIT participates in EDUROAM to allow you to access wireless at other participating universities using your login & password.

Galvin Library Laptops– Laptop computers are available for checkout in the library. They may be used anywhere on campus

for up to four hours. Particularly useful: For class if you don’t have a laptop and late night when the labs are closed.

Research Guidelines: Things to remember

Be very careful in your work and be as skillful as you can be.Be absolutely objective:

You cannot predict what your results might be. Yourjob is not to presuppose what the answers/solutionsare, but rather find out what the answers are andreport them accurately.

Be your own toughest critic:Constantly look at what you have done and how youhave done it and make sure you have not introducedany bias or systematic errors in your protocols.

Research Guidelines: Interpreting results

You do not want to overinterpret your results, i.e., read moreconclusions into them than the data warrants;But at the same time, you want to look carefully at the dataso that you do not leave any reasonable conclusions behind.

Experience is the best teacher in this regard.


Research Guidelines: Ethics

Be absolutely objective and honest in performing andrecording the results of your work. No fudging or massagingof data ever. Never!Things you find by searching the internet are the work byothers: you can quote the results by including the detailedsources.In collaborative work, ensure that everyone who worked on theproject gets proper respect and credit in proportion to theireffort and contribution.Make sure to cite the related work when you present or report your work: using bibliography (authors, titles, journal name,year, volume, pages, etc.).Always live by the Golden Rule: One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself.

Using Library Resources

Probably need to do some literature search to find out whatwork has been done by others regarding the problem you areworking on.A good first step is to use a search engine on your topic orkeywords. Tools/Databases:

IIT’s library resources: Galvin Library: http://library.iit.edu/(or, start at www.iit.edu and use the quick link to Libraries inthe search menu, and then the link to the Galvin Library).On the Galvin library page, you will find links to books, journals, and many other resources.If Galvin Library does not have the book or journal article youneed, you can get the article through the Galvin Librarysinterlibrary loan procedure (MyILL; see below).

Most journals will have a link to their archives where you canquickly find any article by the date, volume number, issuenumber and page number. You can always get at least theabstract of any article, and often times download the entirearticle. If you cannot download the entire article for free(many journals charge for that) you can get the articlethrough the Galvin Librarys interlibrary loan procedure(MyILL; see below).In this case click on the link in the right hand column of theGalvin Library homepage entitled MyILL Account and set upan account for requesting books and journal articles fromother of our partner libraries. You can then go into youraccount and can request a book or journal article; the processis very easy. The material usually arrives in a few days (as anattachment to an e-mail).

Orientation: ResearchLab Safety

Lab safety

Safety in the lab is an extremely important aspect of doingresearch.The details of safe lab practices will obviously vary dependingon the type of lab (software, physics, chemistry, biology); yourresearch advisor should discuss with you the specific detailsthat apply to your lab and make sure that safe practices arefollowed.Potential safety issues might concern specific chemicals(flammable, reactive, toxic) or particular instruments (highvoltage, radiation sources, etc.) used in the lab.

• First responders to disturbances, suspicious persons and activity, hazardous conditions, intruder alarms, fire alarms, panic alarm, and criminal activity such as theft, robbery, assaults ect.

• Non-emergency medical transportation to Student Health & Wellness Center or Mercy Hospital.

• On-campus uniformed public safety officer escorts. Also during specific hours, off-campus escorts are provided to designated points.

• Vehicle unlocks and battery “jump” starts.• Lost and found property custodian.

Walking

• Plan your way in advance. Choose well-traveled routes. Use discretion when talking or walking with strangers, even if they are offering you help or assistance. Always keep moving toward your destination. Walk with purpose.

• When possible, try to travel with friends, whether it is daytime or evening. Just remember: Safety in numbers.

• Avoided deserted areas. Do not cut through parks, alleys and vacant lots at night.

Walking

• If you think you are being followed, cross the street, change direction, or go to a public place where others are present.

• If a person confronts you and demands your money or possessions, give what is demanded and create a safe distance.

• Keep alert. Don’t let a conversation on your cellphone or the use of headphones make you unaware of your surroundings.

• Use caution when using automated teller machines(ATMs) Select one located in a busy, well-lighted area. Plan ahead so you are not forced to find a machine in an unfamiliar part of town.
