sempre podendo consultar as minhas resoluções e tirar dúvidas no fórum.

A grande maioria
No entanto,

A maior parte delas
brancos escolhendo a opção adequada. São abordados temas variados. A

False Friends (Falsos amigos).
Pretend = Fingir
He pretends to be a doctor.
Ele finge que é medico.
A palavra que significa pretender é Intend.
Library = Biblioteca
A library is not a luxury but one of the necessities of life. (Henry
Beecher).
Exit = saída, sair
Actually = Na verdade, na realidade, de fato

Actually, everyone on the bus had to exit.

verdadeiros cognatos (true friends).
Officer: oficial, funcionário, fiscal, policial, presidente, diretor.
A customs officer had been tipped off regarding his activity.
I stopped and asked the two officers if there was a problem. (Dallas
News)
He was an army officer.
Ele era um oficial do exército.
Everyone believes that CEOs (Chief Executive Officer) can do whatever
they want. (Stever Robbins)

querem.

Cognatos Significados
portuguesa, são palavras bem conhecidas e as vemos em vários lugares;
(viagem), ice-cream (sorvete), know-how (conhecimento
especializado), show (espetáculo), fast-food (comida rápida), drink
(bebida), coffee (café), upgrade (atualização), greencard (passe-livre
americano).

provas passadas. Seguem abaixo as técnicas a serem aplicadas durante
completa do assunto.
procurando leia a sentença toda e a grife.
a seguir quando for começar a fazer a prova.
Ler primeiro as questões - embora nossa tendência seja ler logo o
worst (o pior), the most (o mais), if/whether (se), nomes de pessoas,

Sucesso !

EsPCEx - 2016
Leia o texto a seguir e responda às questões 01, 02 e 03.
This migrant crisis is different from all others
2015 was unquestionably the year of the migrant. The news was
dominated for months by pictures of vast crowds shuffling through the
borders of yet another European country, being treated with brutality in
some places and given a reluctant welcome in others.
When researching a report for radio and television about the migrant
phenomenon, it is possible to realize that there was nothing new about it.
For many years, waves of displaced and frightened people have broken
over Europe again and again and the images have been strikingly similar
each time.
In 1945, __________ (1) the ethnic Germans, forced out of their homes
in Poland, Czechoslovakia and Russia and obliged to seek shelter in a
shattered and divided Germany. More recently, we can see floods of

Albanian refugees escaping from the ethnic cleansing of the Serbian
forces in Kosovo in 1998 and 1999.
Yet there is one major difference between these waves of migrants in the
past and the one we saw in 2015. Professor Alex Betts, director of the
Refugee Studies Centre at Oxford University says that it was the first time
Europe faced people coming in from the outside in large numbers as
refugees. He explains: “The fact that many are Muslims is perceived as
challenging Europe’s identity.” European societies are changing very fast,
indeed, as a result of immigration. In London, for instance, more than
300 languages are now spoken, according to a recent academic study.
The influx of migrants reinforces people’s sense that their identity is
under threat.
But how can the world deal conclusively with the problem? The former UN
under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs, Sir John Holmes,
blames global governance. “Other powers are rising,” he says - Syria is an
example of this. “And the United States doesn’t have the influence it once
did, so the problem’s not being fixed, no-one’s waving the big stick and
we’re having to pick up the pieces.” We have endured an entire century of
exile and homelessness and the cause is always the same - conflict and
bad government. Unless these are dealt with, the flow of migrants will
never be stopped.

gap (1) in paragraph 3.
completar a lacuna (1) no parágrafo 3.
[A] there to be = haver
estamos falando do passado.
verbal passado, que é there were (havia, existiam) e no plural pois se
refere aos alemães (germans) no plural. Opção errada.
[B] there will be = haverá
estamos falando do passado.
verbal passado, que é there were (havia, existiam) e no plural pois se
refere aos alemães (germans) no plural. Opção errada.
[C] there are = há, existem
falando do passado.
passado, que é there were (havia, existiam) e no plural pois se refere

In 1945, there were the ethnic Germans, forced out of their homes in

shattered and divided Germany.
Ele
é mais conhecido nas suas formas do tempo verbal Presente: there is
(há no singular) e there are (há no plural).
correta.
[E] there have been = tem havido, existido
A forma verbal there have been está no Present Perfect.
a 1945, estamos falando do passado. Portanto, o verbo tem que está no
tempo verbal passado, que é there were (havia, existiam) e no plural

inundado a Europa vez após vez e as imagens têm sido
surpreendentemente semelhantes a cada vez.
In 1945, there were the ethnic Germans, forced out of their homes in
Poland, Czechoslovakia and Russia and obliged to seek shelter in a
shattered and divided Germany. More recently, we can see floods of
Albanian refugees escaping from the ethnic cleansing of the Serbian
forces in Kosovo in 1998 and 1999.

Kleptocracy Initiative
Kleptocracy is a system in which national economies are exploited
for the illicit enrichment of a well-connected elite. Kleptocracies promote
widespread, systemic corruption affecting the lives of citizens, and
threatening individuals and institutions abroad. The Kleptocracy Initiative
confronts threats posed by kleptocratic regimes.
Today's unchecked kleptocrats are demonstrating contempt for
international law, resulting in territorial expansionism that threatens US
national security. Concerned only with personal enrichment, modern
kleptocrats use political power not only to govern but also to brazenly
steal from their own citizenry. Kleptocrats also export corruption.
Rather than keeping the money at home, they hide their illicit capital
in countries where the rule of law is strong. Ironically, the West is
participating in the kleptocratic system by safeguarding these stolen
funds. Our professional world is full of enablers — bankers, lawyers,
lobbyists, and even legislators — who profit from these funds, develop a

vested interest in continuing the flow of capital, and facilitate foreign
corruption. They become less supportive of democratic foreign policy
objectives because reforms abroad may impact their financial interests at
home.
While we cannot directly control the behavior of other countries, we
can protect our freedom and democracy by denying safe haven to the
money stolen by kleptocratic regimes hostile to our interests. We can
reduce the influence of enablers, standing up to those within our ranks
who profit from these regimes.

Tom Petty had it right: The waiting is the hardest part. Now William &

have come up with an express service for admissions that reduces the
months-long wait for acceptance notification to a matter of hours by
replacing the lengthy application essay with an hour-long face-to-face

Baniwa. One of the first potential outlets identified was an annual flower
fair called ExpoFlora that is held every year in Holambra, in the state of
São Paulo (SP). The idea was to sell the Baniwa baskets as flower-
holders, a unique decorative piece for homes and offices.
A large order of baskets was placed by different participants of the fair,
and 200 Baniwa artisans were mobilized to produce hundreds of baskets
in a short period of time. However, problems with the shipping of the
products from the Northwest Brazilian Amazon to the State of São Paulo
(SP) and the lack of any institutional sponsorship at the fair resulted in
poor sales and revenues, disappointing the artisans after the hard work.
As a result, many of the participant artisans abandoned the project,
suspicious of its real potential and credibility (Martins & Unterstell, 2009;
Unterstell & Martins, 2004; Wright, 2009).
Although this was an important setback, the search for commercial
partners for the Arte Baniwa project continued and resulted in the
identification of one of the major furniture and home decoration stores in
Brazil, called Tok & Stok, as a potential outlet. With the intermediation of
ISA, the store decided to buy all the Baniwa products that had not been
sold at the ExpoFlora fair in order to minimize the losses.
In addition, Tok & Stok placed an order for more baskets, paying three
times more than the artisans were used to receiving for their work in the
local markets of the Northwest Brazilian Amazon. With these two actions,
Tok & Stok thus became a privileged partner and outlet of the Arte
Baniwa project.
The evolution of the project was followed by contacts with a major
Brazilian retailer possessing the largest network of supermarkets in the
country. The partnership with this chain, the Pão de Açúcar Group, was
responsible not only for giving great visibility to the Baniwa products, but

also for introducing the element of competitive pricing to the project, as
the company had more strict commercial policies than the other buyers
and partners of the project. This partnership with the Pão de Açúcar
Group was only possible because there were long discussions between the
company and the project (Unterstell & Martins, 2004).
These important landmarks were responsible for increases in the basket
production covering the period between the late 1990s and 2005, when
the fieldwork and data collection for this paper was performed. The
success of the Arte Baniwa project has obviously benefited the
indigenous organization OIBI, the Baniwa communities affiliated with the
project, and the ISA.
For the ISA as a NGO that defends the indigenous rights, it was important
to demonstrate the feasibility of this type of project by showing that these
initiatives can be sustainable in social, economic and ecological ways. The
Arte Baniwa is recognized as a sustainable development project, thus
materializing its belief in the interdependence between biodiversity and
socio-diversity (Unterstell & Martins, 2004).

When the risk of future losses increases or when rates are inadequate,
insurers become more selective about the degree of risk they will assume
in an effort to preserve their profit margin. However, redlining, defined as
refusal to issue or renew, or cancel an insurance policy based on the
geographic location of the structure or individual to be insured, is illegal in

Because losses tend to be higher in urban areas, rates for auto and

shrink by 3% this year, jobs are increasingly hard to find. “Everything
here is wonderful—except for jobs,” says Mobkaf Altawil, a Syrian
architect who fled to Brazil a year ago with his wife, who is a lawyer. He
bakes pizzas for a living; many others aren’t so lucky. Until the economy
returns to growth, Brazil is unlikely to become a popular destination—no
matter how warm the welcome.

há um ano com sua esposa, que é advogada. Ele trabalha como pizzaiolo;
importa quão calorosas sejam as boas-vindas.

TEXT 1

While we cannot directly control the behavior of other countries, we
can protect our freedom and democracy by denying safe haven to the
money stolen by kleptocratic regimes hostile to our interests. We can
reduce the influence of enablers, standing up to those within our ranks

Texto 4: The commercialization of Baniwa products
Since the beginning of the project, the disjointed attempts at
commercializing the Baniwa products have been replaced by a more
structured way to find market opportunities for the emerging Arte
As a result, many of the participant artisans abandoned the project,
suspicious of its real potential and credibility (Martins & Unterstell, 2009;
Unterstell & Martins, 2004; Wright, 2009).
Although this was an important setback, the search for commercial
partners for the Arte Baniwa project continued and resulted in the
identification of one of the major furniture and home decoration stores in
Brazil, called Tok 14 & Stok, as a potential outlet. With the intermediation
of ISA, the store decided to buy all the Baniwa products that had not been
sold at the ExpoFlora fair in order to minimize the losses.

12. Why did many of the participating Baniwa artisans withdraw from the
Arte Baniwa project after the ExpoFlora?
a) They did not like the idea of their baskets being used as flower bolders.

Texto 5: Urban Insurance Issues
Underwriting, the task of deciding what risks to insure, allows
insurers to discriminate between good and bad risks. Differences in prices
for insurance must reflect expected differences in losses and expenses.
When the risk of future losses increases or when rates are inadequate,
insurers become more selective about the degree of risk they will assume
in an effort to preserve their profit margin. However, redlining, defined as

refusal to issue or renew, or cancel an insurance policy based on the
geographic location of the structure or individual to be insured, is illegal in
every state.
Because losses tend to be higher in urban areas, rates for auto and
home insurance are often higher than average in inner cities. This has
raised questions about the availability and affordability of insurance in
urban communities. Responding to these concerns, the insurance industry
is redoubling its efforts to enhance the insurability of inner city properties
and to push for changes in auto insurance that would enable drivers to
have more coverage options.

Texto 6: Insurance Fraud
Those who commit insurance fraud are not easily identifiable. The
National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) says that insurance cheats
range from organized criminals, to unscrupulous doctors, lawyers,
vehicle body shop owners, to ordinary people who buy insurance.
Although the motivation to commit insurance fraud is always monetary,
the amount also varies greatly, from a few extra dollars on an insurance
claim, to thousands or more stolen by organized fraud rings.
The Insurance Information Institute estimates that
property/casualty insurance fraud cost insurers $24 billion in 1999.
According to Conning and Company, fraud cost the entire insurance
industry $96.2 billion in 1999.
Fraud rings have followed the path of technology to the Internet in
search of fraud opportunities. Along with the ease of electronic filing of
medical claims is the greater potential for committing fraud. Conning’s
2000 study found that 84 percent of respondents to its fraud survey
agree that the use of the Internet will create new classes of insurance
fraud.
