    Dear Parents,

For those of us who were in attendance at Wednesday night’s event on Internet Safety, we came away inspired, with renewed determination to do what we can to protect ourselves and our children, and perhaps at a bitoverwhelmed at the ever increasing ways the internet can reach our children.

What became clear is that this challenge hss become ever present and is ever changing. Protections that worked afew years ago may not be sufficient anymore. More than any one specific solution or piece of equipment, is theneed for our attitude to be that it is the parents’ responsibility to ensure their child(ren)’s safety on the internet, and for there to be an ongoing flow of information and chizuk between us to keep up with the new and increasingchallenges.

The one proposal, which was a suggestion for an immediate step that anyone can take, is to enroll in themonitoring program called WebChaver. This one step in a broader approach, entails having a trusted person, such as a spouse, Rebbe or parent being able to view a list of websites visited in the past week. This shouldserve as enough of a deterrent for almost any sincere, Torah Jew, to be strong enough, even at a weak moment, toresist going onto a site that one would be ashamed to have the other person know about. The ‘shame’ factor, orrather the absence of the ‘shame’ factor, has been identified as one of the primary reasons why the internet posessuch a Nisayon, a trial, for otherwise fine, upstanding individuals and responsible, well-disciplined children.By restoring the ‘shame’ factor through monitoring, we can go along way to minimize this critical danger ofinternet activity.

We were gratified to see so many of our parents at the event, but we feel the message needs to be heard by allparents. A DVD of the presentations will be available shortly (for school, not individual viewing) and we willIY’H schedule another opportunity to enable all our parents to receive the guidance and inspiration that wasgenerated. Stay tuned for further information.

Please see the reverse side of this letter for detailed information for signing onto WebChaver.

May your Shabbos connect you to higher sites and sights,

  • INTERNET SAFETY PROGRAM

MONITORING WEB SITE VISITS WITH COVENANT EYES/WEB CHAVER

One important tool in the arsenal of controlling inappropriate internet use is the monitoring of sites visited. When a person is aware his internet activity will be seen and scrutinized by someone else, it could be just the restraint needed to help him or her avoid pursuing an inappropriate site. WEB CHAVER is a service that utilizes the highly vaunted COVENANT EYES MONITORING Program, that keeps track of all sites visited. Each user designates an `Accountability Partner’ or Shomer as we would call it, who receives a weekly e-mail, listing all sites visited, how often and at what times. In addition, each site is scored for its appropriateness. Our Yeshiva strongly urges you to sign up. Although a monitoring program is only one component of an effective protection plan, this first step can provide meaningful protection for you and your children from unwanted activity on the internet. A FEW SIMPLE STEPS TO JOIN: Go to www.WebChaver.org and click on the maroon colored “Sign Up Now” starburst towards the upper left side of the page. Fill in your information including the group affiliation. Click on the YTC/TEAM group. Make sure to designate an accountability partner – usually a spouse or parent. The monthly payment of $3.95 (less than half of the regular Covenant Eyes subscription) can be paid by credit card or through a Pay Pal account. All your computers and portable devices can be included under one account. Each designated user requires a separate account. All children are usually included in one account. The group administrator will only have information as to who signed up and is active. He will have no access to information about which websites, how often or when they were visited. All questions can be answered by contacting [email protected]
