The sound of mother's eggbeater drewme to the kitchen. There I found her atwork, and began to watch. This was my

chance to find out

what she put intothat chocolate cakeof hers that made itso good.

There was bakingchocolate, of course.I reached for a crumbthat had fallen off thebar and put it on mytongue to dissolve. Itwas bitter!

descobrir o que elacolocava naquele bolode chocolate que odeixava to gostoso.

Vi uma barra de

chocolate. Peguei umalasquinha que haviacado e a coloquei naboca. Era amargo!

Olhei os outros ingredientes sobre a mesa: leiteazedo (Deus me livre!). Com certeza ela no iacolocar aquilo no bolo. Mas colocou! E junto como repugnante bicarbonato de sdio, que eu havia

tomado na ltima vez que tive azia. Perguntei quetipo de bolo ela estava fazendo com aquele tipo deingredientes! Minha me sorriu e me disse paraesperar e ver.

I surveyed the other things on the table. Therewas a cupful of sour milk. Yuck! Surely Motherwasn't going to put that in the cake! But she did,

along with some of that awful baking soda shehad given me the last time I had a stomachache.What kind of cake could she possibly make out ofsuch things? Mother smiled and told me to waitand see.

Mother served the cake that eveningafter dinner. It looked as good asusual, but I was going to be careful. I

tasted a little crumb, then a largercrumb, and finally a whole bite. Itcouldn't have been better! I forgot allabout the sour milk and baking soda,and asked for another piece.

Naquela noite, ela me deu uma fatia

de bolo. Era igual ao de sempre, maseu estava desconfiada. Dei umamordidinha. Que delcia! Esqueci oleite azedo e o bicarbonato e pedioutro pedao.
