bee orchid (Orphys scolopax), which resembles the female sex pheromones of the solitary bee species
Eucera longicormis. The shape and color of the orchid blossoms enhance the olfactory mimicry. Male bees
are duped into copulating with the plant, becoming covered with pollen. The gull blithely flies off for another
tryst, spreading the orchid's gametes with each successive deception. Presumably the fruitless bachelors
are immune to the irony as they further the flower's reproduction at the expense of their own.
