The year was approximately 52 A.D., 22 yearsafter the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Under thedynamic and inspired leadership of the Apostle

Paul, Christianity was spreading throughout the Roman empire. But preaching the gospel

was a hazardous and a dangerous mission that required a great deal of courage and faith

in God!

Esta história ocorreu no ano 52 D.C.,aproximadamente 22 anos depois da

Uma vez, para fugir dos seus inimigosreligiosos na Turquia, Paulo atravessou oMar Ageu para chegar a Atenas, na Grécia.De lá desceu a penínsulagrega e foi para a cidadede Corinto.

Pouco tempo depoisde chegar, Pauloconheceu um casal judeu,Áquila e Priscila, cujaProfissão era fazertendas. Estesprontamente receberamJesus em seus coraçõese convidaram Paulo a

ficar na sua casa. Pauloajudou-os a fazer tendas,e todos os Sábados ia com eles à sinagogalocal onde pregava e Jesus era o Messiasdeles, o Filho de Deus.

One time, fleeing from his enemies inTurkey, Paul sailed across the Aegean Sea toAthens, Greece. From there he journeyed

down the Grecianpeninsula to the city of Corinth.

After only a shorttime there, Paul met aJewish couple namedAquila and Priscilla, whowere tent-makers byprofession. They readilyreceived Jesus into theirhearts and invited Paul tostay in their home. Paul

helped them make tents,and every Sabbath daywent with them to the local Jewish synagoguewhere he preached and tried to persuade theJews that Jesus was their Messiah, the Son of God.

The chief ruler of the synagogue was aJew by the name of Crispus, and as helistened to Paul, he became convinced thatwhat he was saying was the truth, so he andall of his household joyfully received Jesus

into their hearts! Butthere were other Jewishleaders who did notreceive the Truth, andchief among them was aman named Sosthenes. Inhis hatred for Paul,Sosthenes beganspreading vicious lies andrumours and soon hadPaul and Crispus expelled

from the Synagogue!Paul then went nextdoor to the house of Justus, a Christian whohouse was built right beside the synagogue.From there, he began preaching the Gospel the Greeks of Corinth, and soon a large

number of them were convertedto Christianity!

O chefe da sinagoga era um judeuchamado Crispo, e, ao ouvir Paulo, ficouconvencido de que o que ele dizia era verdadede maneira que ele e toda a sua casareceberam Jesus em seus corações comalegria! Mas houveoutros líderes judeusque não receberam aVerdade, e o principaldeles foi um homemchamado Sóstenes. Noseu ódio contra Paulo,Sóstenes começou aespalhar mentiras eboatos maldosos e embreve fez com que

Paulo e Crispo foramexpulsos da sinagoga!Paulo foi para casa de Tito Justo, um

cristão cuja casa era bem ao lado da sinagoga.Lá, ele começou a pregar o Evangelho aosGregos de Corinto, e em breve um grande

número deles havia se convertido aoCristianismo!

Sosthenesflew into a fury ! ―We’ve gotto stop Paul before he wins any more peoplto Jesus! Sosthenes declared, burning withhate and jealousy. ―And here’s what we’ll

do…. Paul was in Justus’ home when suddenlya mob, led by Sosthenes,burst into the house!―There he is! Seizehim! Sosthenes

shouted. Paul rose to hisfeet, and instantly adozen men were uponhim and had pinned himto the wall!

―If I could judge

you according toour religious laws,Sosthenessnarled, ―I would have you stonedto death right here on the spot! — But Romanlaw requires that you get a civil trial, and wdon’t want to get ourselves in trouble bykilling you, so we’ll have to let the Romanscondemnyou!

Sóstenes ficou todo encolerizado!- Temos que parar Paulo antes que ele ganhemais alguém para Jesus! - declarou Sóstenes,ardendo de ódio e inveja. - E o que nós vamos

fazer é o seguinte...Paulo estava na casa de Justo quando derepente uma grandemultidão, chefiada porSóstenes, irrompeu casaadentro! - Ali está ele!

Agarrem-no!- Sóstenesgritou. Paulo levantou-sede um salto e num instanteuma dúzia de homens otinham agarrado eempurrado contra a parede!

-Se eu pudesse julgar você de acordo comas nossas leis religiosas – Sóstenes rosnou – eu mandaria matar você a pedradas aquimesmo! Mas como a lei romana exige quevocê seja julgado em tribunal civil, e nósqueremos nos manter em encrenca te matando,vamos deixar que os Romanos te condenem!

―But I’ve broken no laws or doneanything legally wrong. Paul answered hisaccuser, ―You have no case against me.

Sosthenes stuck his face right up toPaul’s, his evil eyes gleaming inches away,and said, ―Shut up, you dog, and look outside! There is a mob of severalhundred Greeks with us who are nowpersuaded that you have broken Romanlaws! — And by the time we get finishedaccusing you, the Romans will crucify you just like they did yourJesus! With that, hespat in Paul’s face, and led the mob downthe streets of the city to the great marble

palace where the Roman Governor’s judgment seat was.

Now the proconsular Governor of Greece was Junius Annoeus Gallio, theyounger brother of the famous Romansenator Seneca. Upon hearing that―a serious legal crime had beencommitted , he admitted the mob of Jewsand enraged Greek citizens into his court.

- Mas eu não quebrei lei nenhuma nem fiznada de errado que seja acusador.- Paulo disse.- Você não tem argumento contra mim.

Sóstenes chegou o seu rosto bem junto aode Paulo, e com os seus olhos maldososchamejando apenas a uns centímetros dedistância, disse: - Cale a boca, seu cachorro, eolhe lá fora! Temos conosco uma multidão devárias centenas de Gregos que estãopersuadidos de que você quebrou as leis

romanas! E quando nós tivermos terminado dete acusar, os Romanos te crucificarão comofizeram ao seu Jesus! Com isto cuspiu no rostode Paulo e levou a multidão pelas ruas abaixoda cidade para o grande palácio de mármoreonde estava o tribunal do governador romano.

Ora, o governador pró-consular da Gréciaera Junio Annoeus Gálio, o irmão mais novode Seneca, o famoso senador romano. Aoouvir que "um grande crime contra a lei tinhasido cometido", admitiu a entrada da multidãode Judeus e cidadãos gregos enraivecidos na

sua corte.

When they had assembled before theGovernor, Sosthenes stepped forward and

began to accuse Paul. ―This man, he charged,―is persuading the people to worship God in

ways contrary to thelaw! Sosthenes beganbringing one accusation after another againstPaul, and the Governor became concerned atthe multitude of serious criminal accusationsthat were being leveled against Paul!

Quando estavam todos congregados diantedo governador, Sóstenes, dando uns passosà frente, começou a acusar Paulo. - Estehomem - acusou ele - está persuadindo o

povo a adorar a Deus de maneiras contráriasà lei! Sóstenes começou a fazer umaacusação atrás das outra contra Paulo, e ogovernador começou a ficar preocupadocom o monte de acusações criminais queestavam sendo feitas contra Paulo!

Suddenly Governor Gallio gave a wrsmile as he realized what was happening.―This is ridiculous! he thought, ―this isnothing more than religious jealousyand arguments over tradition and doctrinadifferences! —And yet they’re trying to getme to pass judgment on him by accusinghim of having broken some legallaw!

Finally Sosthenes and the other Jewsfinished their accusations, and just as Paulwas about to speak in his defense, Galliorose to his feet and said, ―If you Jews weremaking a complaint about some actualwrong-doing or serious crime, it would bereasonable for me to listen to you. But sinit involves questions about things having t

do with your own religious laws, settle thematter yourselves! I will not be a judge ofsuchmatters!

Motioning to the guards, Gallio thenhad the entire mob driven out of the CourtSeeing Paul still standing there, he said to

him quietly, ―You are free to go.

De repente, o governador Gálio deu umsorriso forçado, pois percebeu o que estavaacontecendo. - Isto é absurdo! - pensou - Istonão passa de inveja religiosa e de argumentos

por causa de tradições e diferenças dedoutrina! E contudo, estão tentando que eu ocondene por o acusarem de ter quebrado umalei qualquer!

Finalmente, Sóstenes e os outros Judeusterminaram as suas acusações, e assim que

Paulo ia começar a falar em sua defesa, Gáliose levantou e disse: - Se vocês, Judeus,estivessem fazendo uma queixa sobre algumamaldade ou crime grave, seria razoável eu darouvidos a vocês. Mas uma vez que envolvequestões sobre palavras e nomes relacionadoscom as suas leis religiosas, vocês mesmosresolvam o assunto! Eu não serei juiz de taisassuntos!

Fazendo sinal aos guardas, Gálio mandouque pusessem fora do tribunal toda a multidão.Ao ver Paulo ainda no mesmo lugar, disse-lhecalmamente: -Você está livre, pode ir embora.

Quando Paulo saiu do tribunal e desceu asua escadaria enorme, reparou que haviairrompido uma briga violenta entre os Judeus ea multidão furiosa de Gregos que haviam sidoenganados e desencaminhados pelas mentirasde Sóstenes contra Paulo.Furiosos por Sóstenes oster agitado por causa deuma insignificância, amultidão zangada sevirou contra ele ecomeçou a bater-lhe poros ter enganado e usado!

Paulo continuou emCorinto durante bastantetempo depois disto,ensinando e pregando aPalavra de Deus e ganhando milhares de almaspara a fé em Jesus! Na verdade, quando ele foiembora, estava estabelecido um dos gruposcristãos mais fortes de toda a Europa, e umamultidão incontável de almas preciosas havia

encontrado verdadeira felicidade e significadopara as suas vidas!

As Paul emerged from the court buildingand descended its great steps, he noticed thaan angry quarrel had broken out between thJews and the angry mob of Greeks who hadbeen tricked and misled by Sosthenes’ lies

about Paul. Furiousthat Sosthenes hadgotten them allstirred up overnothing, the angrycrowd now turnedon him and beganbeating him forhaving deceivedand used them!

Paul stayed onin Corinth for quite

some time after this, teaching and preachingthe Word of God and winning thousands of souls to faith in Jesus! By the time he left, oof the strongest groups of Christians in allEurope had been established, and an untold

multitude of people had found true happineand meaning in life!
