    Progress

Progress is the closing bracket in the inclusio. The first one was

    in Phil. 1:12.

    Quantitative Progress

    (Making progress

    through them)

    Qualitative Progress

    (Making progress

    in them)

    Phil 1:12

    Now I want you to

    know, brothers, that

    what has happened to

me has really served toadvance the gospel.

    Phil 1:25

    Convinced of this, I

    know that I will

    remain, and I will

    A Picture Of Progress

    Ephesians 4:12,13

to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body ofChrist may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the

knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the

whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

1 Thessalonians 4:1Finally then, brethren, we request and exhort you in the Lord Jesus,

that as you received from us instruction as to how you ought to walk

and please God (just as you actually do walk), that you excel still

    more.

    Colossians 2:6,7

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live

in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you

were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

    Progress as Discipleship

    Matthew 28:16-20

16Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain whereJesus had told them to go. 17When they saw him, they worshiped

him; but some doubted. 18Then Jesus came to them and said, "All

authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore

go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of

the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching

them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am

with you always, to the very end of the age."

    Progress as Discipleship

Notice the three parts of the method.

    Acts:2:41,42

So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that

day there were added about three thousand souls. They were

continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to

fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

    Progress as Discipleship

A disciple aspired to be just like the rabbi. That was the goal, the

singular aim of being a disciple and thats why disciples werealways with their rabbi. They wanted to watch him as closely as

possible, observing how he responded to different situations. They

wanted to know what prayer he prayed when he sat at the evening

meal, how he greeted people he met in the marketplace, how he

    reacted when given bad news.

    Progress through Connection

For the gospel to make progress in people they must get connected

to a faith community (church). Those who first received this makedisciples mission from Jesus understood this.

    Acts 15:36

Some time later Paul said to Barnabas, "Let us go back and visit the

brothers in all the towns where we preached the word of the Lordand see how they are doing."

    Acts 15:39-41

They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company.

Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus, but Paul chose Silas and

left, commended by the brothers to the grace of the Lord. He went

through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.

    Progress Through Connection

God has equipped the body of Christ (Church) with roles that are

    critical to spiritual growth.

    Ephesians 4:10-13

It was he [Jesus] who gave some to be apostles, some to be

prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and

teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that thebody of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and

in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining

to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

    Joy

The gospels progress in us should be characterized by joy.

Some Christians have to tell their face they got saved!

    Joy

Followers refuse to be satisfied just to be saved and on their way

to Heaven. For followers, Christianity is a relationship, anadventure, a passionate pursuit of Christ. Followers escape theboredom and drudgery of a system of rituals and regulations and

revel in the discovery of this intriguing person [Jesus].

    Sow What?

Living for Paul means knowing Christ and making him known to the

lost as well as to those who are in Christ. The idea of making Christknown to the in-Christ Philippians reveals that Paul expected the

Gospel to be making progress in. This would be evident as looked

like Jesus in every area of their lives. Take some time reflecting on

the gospels progress in your life.

    1. Is there evidence that Jesus is being formed in you?

    2. Has the gospel brought about thorough life-

transformation or have you simply added an isolate

religious category the includes the rules and rituals

mentioned in Joe Stowells quote?3. Is their joy in your journey?

    4. Make the prayer, Take my life part of your walk with

Christ this week. Ask him to give you a deeper

understand of the gospels message and what that

    means for your life.M d F b 22 2010
