L NGUA ESTRANGEIRA - INGLS IIWhat are the best jobs of 2008?

If youre job hunting in the professional or

service- oriented fields, we have good news.Of the ten categoriesnto w c t e Bureau o La or Stat st cs(BLS) divides jobs, the professional andservice categories already the twolargest in the economy will boast the mostjob openings in 2008. In the next decade, 17percent more employees will be employed inthese two categories than are today, nearlydouble the expansion of other categories. With an increase in demand, professional andservice jobs, which include professions likeeducator, scientist, health care worker andartist in the professional category, andpolice officer, child caretaker andcosmetologist in the service category, willalso add roughly a million new jobs to theeconomy. By comparison, other categories suchas construction, sales and administration, are predicted to grow by only 10 percent; alleight other occupational groups combined willadd only about half a million jobs to theeconomy in 2008. But wait a second: Arent weheading for recession? Where are all theseopen jobs coming from? While new jobs arebeing created, they dont represent themajority of the open positions workers willsee this year. Career switching andbaby-boomer retirement will create a higherturnover than ever, which will continue to

increase the supply of jobs available. TheBureau of Labor Statistics notes that whilea slightly expanding economy is spurring jobgrowth in a majority of fields, the need toreplace workers who leave a field permanentlyis expected to create more openings thangrowth will. According to Chris Higgins,Senior Associate Director of CareerManagement at the University ofPennsylvanias Wharton School, theretirement boom has increased studentsinterest in general management rotationprograms, introduced by many companies toprevent the loss of a record number ofretirees. He notes that companies are using

these rotation programs as a way offast-tracking replacements in management, and students are using them as a way of gettinga taste for different departments and nicheswithin a company. It turns out to benefit theemployers as well as the employees, observesHiggins. If youre job searching in certainoccupational groups namely farming, production, or transportation yourelooking at slow or negative growth and poorjob availability. Peer occupational groups, however, are hiring at a brisker pace:construction, administration, andmaintenance and repair are all groups that areexperiencing healthy growth or job

availability. On the other hand, if yourelooking in the white-collar realm, yourebetter set for 2008; both growth andavailability are predicted to be healthy forthe foreseeable future. Within theprofessional rubric, three particularsectors are displaying the most aggressivegrowth rates: computer/ mathematical,community/social service, and healthpractices jobs are each projected to grow by

20 percent n t e next eca e, w teducation/library jobs following at 14percent. That means that if youre anaspiring teacher or health worker, you wontbe looking for jobs the jobs will be lookingfor you. While computer and mathematical

science jobs are projected to grow at nearlydouble the rate of other types of jobs, growthin this demographic has actually slowed inthe last decade as the software industrymatures and as routine work is increasinglyoutsourced abroad, says the BLS. Theresstill healthy hiring here, however, and someexperts are saying computer science jobs willbe in increasing demand. Tech firms arepicking up hiring again, Higgins notes, ina way they havent in nearly a decade.Companies like Google are hiring onlinesales, operations, and Internet servicesemployees in droves. In short, computer andmathematical experts continue to be asought-after demographic. They may not seethe same demand that educators and healthprofessionals are enjoying anytime soon, butit may not be long before the tech industryreaches 90s-level hiring and growth onceaga n.
