Friendship is a very important thing in our lives. It is perhaps the strongest and most

durable of our human relationships. It is very good to have friends and to talk to them

whenever we need. It is very good to talk to them and to share our problems and

expectations and also to hear what they have to say to us.

In the past, we used to make friends with closer people. But now with the use of the

Internet we can link to people of the whole world. That is very interesting. We can

have foreign friends and we can communicate with them.

Nowadays the communication by Internet is very easy and fast because of

globalization. So, it was created the social networking website.

But what is a Social Networking Website?

Social networking website is one of the ways of representation of the human beings

affective or professional relationships or among their groupings of mutual interests.

The networking is responsible for the sharing of ideas among people that have

common interests, objectives and also values. Thus, a discussion group is composed

by individuals who have similar identities. Those social networking sites are present

mainly in the Internet due to the fact of this facilitates an acceleration and wide way

of the ideas to be disclosed and of the absorption of new elements in search of

something in common.

Before the appearance of the Internet, the formation of social networkings was

hindered by the lack of effective communication means in maintaining these

individuals in constant contact. With the development of the Mediated

Communication for Computers, there was an increase in the human natural ability,

and several social organizations appeared in the networking. Those organizations

vary from political and social movements to relationship networkings and they work

based on discussion forums or lists of e-mails.

Do you know that ORKUT is the most famous Social Networking Website in

Brazil?

• Orkut is a social networking of Google, created in January 19, 2004 with the

objective of helping its members to make new friends and to maintain

relationships. Its name is originated in the planner boss, Orkut Büyükkokten, a

Turkish engineer of Google. Such systems, such as those adopted by the

planner, are also called social networking.

• Nowadays, there are more than sixty million (68. 182. 265 on August 20,

2007) users registered.

• Brazil is the country with the largest number of members. About 55, 29% of

the users of the networking are Brazilian.

• The youngest people have more interest in Orkut. Approximately 59, 41% are

people from 18 to 25 years old.

• Every 8 days, 1 million new users enter Orkut by means of invitations sent by

e-mail or creation of an e-account.

• A severe critic is about the language used in Orkut. It’s called “Internetês”.

That language type is considered an aggression to the languages because it

doesn't respect the norms of the languages. The use of abbreviations is

considered abusive. Examples: ‘FOREVER’ – 4ever; ‘YOU ARE’ – u r, and so

on. But this language type is not only of Orkut; it was already used in the

Internet before Orkut to be created.

Today's search for information and need for global communication have already

promoted English from being the language of the American, the British, the Irish, the

Australian, the New Zealand, the Canadian, the Caribbean, and the South African

peoples to being the international language. While portuguese is spoken in 4

countries by approximately 195 million people, English is spoken as a native

language by nearly four hundred million people and has become “a lingua franca”,

the Latin of the modern world, "spoken in every continent by approximately eight

hundred million people" (Todd iv).

More radical estimates, which include speakers with a lower level of language

fluency and awareness, have suggested that the overall total is these days well in

In addition, it is estimated that 75 percent of all international communication in

writing, 80 percent of all information in the world's computers, and 90 percent of

Internet content are in English.

worldwide. Computer, optical fiber, and satellite technologies likewise have made

possible a boom in telecommunications, bringing up the concept of information

superhighway. These two developments demonstrate how the world has evolved into

a global village and how imperatively a standard language is required.

In its role as a global language, English has become one of the most important

academic and professional tools. The English language is recognized as

undoubtedly the most important language for the increasingly mobile international

community to learn. This is a fact that seems to be irreversible. English has become
